✧ Pre-Hogwarts History ✧

For 11 years, a little blond girl ran rampage on the lawns of Railway Terrace, always startling the neighbours and playing excitedly with the local dogs. As a toddler, the other residents smiled at her, trying avidly to coax out her joyful laughter. They didn't care that they never saw her parents shopping around town, or that there were ugly little gnomes that seemed to move in her family garden. She was their darling, their bold little angel, and her cheeky grin was always welcome among their children... All until she learnt the art of sarcasm.

The neighbours blamed her brother, her parents blamed their parents' genes and Margo proudly blamed herself. After learning the art of speech, she had learnt to wield the power of words left unspoken, and her direct nature wasn't perceived as quite so harmless as before. She'd watch a neighbour accidentally leave their gates open and say "Are you sure your dog's still in the garden?" following with something like "Don't worry, your memory's still young!". To her surprise, the adults who had previously doted on her didn't find this so amusing, and her gap-toothed grin wasn't as widely accepted anymore. The sadness she felt at this quickly morphed into distaste for her slow-witted neighbours, and she decided that she wouldn't let them see how much their disapproval affected her. She was a witch. She could act however she wanted. Being different from their giggling children should not have been a problem.

Except, her loneliness within the walls of the local muggle school did affect her. Her parents worriedly looked on as reports of raining ceilings and teachers' hair suddenly changing colour circulated the town they lived in. Margo spent more and more time outside, forging a streak of independence that couldn't be found in many other children of her age. When the family adopted a puppy from the local rescue shelter a year before she left for Hogwarts, she was overjoyed. Mimi, their little black furball, loved her unconditionally, and Margo felt as if she could finally breath in the presence of another being. Their bond was something invaluable and she knew she'd miss the canine dearly when she left for Hogwarts.

When Margo received her letter, her curiosity burst from its walls. She couldn't wait to escape her life in Aviemore and experience her first new beginning. She vowed that she would independently forge herself a path and make her own place to call home. Nobody would stand in her way.

✧ Roleplay Guide ✧

✧ Her Face
Margo has a sharp chin that she'll tilt upwards whenever she's trying to cling onto her pride (which is often). Her eyes are a dark amber colour and she has heavy eyebrows which she has an impressive amount of control over. In other words, she's perfectly able to quirk a brow at you in disdain. Margo's hair is blond with a slight curl and currently reaches her shoulders. A light dusting of freckles covers her nose, more visible in the winter than the summer because of her light skin tone. Margo is never afraid to stare or meet another's gaze.

✧ Her Walk
This girl tries to keep her posture steady, which can prove difficult considering she's usually wearing boots with wedges or heels. She is prone to tripping spectacularly but will always attempt to keep her head held high. If she's excited, her strides will be bigger than one would expect of someone with such a small stature. This may look strange but just shows that she's a firm believer that life is not full of time to waste.

✧ Her Talk
Margo likes to consider her words humourous, to say the least. Sometimes she can be blunt and sarcastic, and this is even more prominent with her heavy Scottish accent. Margo grew up in Aviemore, and although she can tone the Scottish twang to her voice down, she doesn't see why she should. Her voice usually has a slight edge to it and can go from quiet to loud in the span of a second. Margo's accent can be described as thick with an emphasis on vowels, especially 'e's and 'a's.

✧ Her frame
There's no other way to explain it. Margo is a shortie. A lot of people don't realise how painful it is to have an eyeful of other people's chins all the time or to be unable to reach the luggage rack on the Hogwarts express. Margo knows. But apart from her shortness, her physique is fairly ordinary. Her legs are in proportion to her shoulders, which are perhaps slightly narrower than average. And even though she eats more than a baby hippopotamus, her figure remains slender. She feels this is sufficient reward for being more than slightly vertically challenged. Lucky soul.

The first time they met, Margo deemed Hades a mischievous little demon. However, he was only a kitten, so she decided to give him a name he'd grow into. He is Hades, Lord of the Underworld, and the only being to have explored the depths of Margo's heart.

That being said, he is quite the little explorer, and Margo can't decide whether to laugh or cry at his determination to climb up the tallest structures around. Just like his owner, he does not show his affection easily, but will sneak in for Margo's petting when he thinks nobody is looking. He is extremely smug about the fact that he can hunt large insects and even scare away a few skittish students with some well-placed growling. He guards their fortress at night (Margo's four-poster), but once his Lady and all her companions are asleep he will spread himself next to her side, unwaveringly loyal and tired after a day's exploring. His powers of persuasion are legendary, with his wide green eyes and small face, but Margo has practice with keeping a mask in place, so manages not to cave into giving him extra food... mostly. He is a manipulative diety, after all.

At Home:

 ✧Brother:
Name: Toby White
Age: 15
Education: Hogwarts, Ravenclaw third year
Personality: Witty, sarcastic, clever, charismatic

"Toby White and modest are not compatible words.  The oldest White sibling is never afraid to announce his achievements to the world and has just as much pride as his sister. However, Toby has a thirst for knowledge that cannot be quenched by merely speaking with others. Books are his friends, and he loves a good debate because it teaches him something, not because it excites him. He is extremely creative in the way he twists his words, making it seem as if he’s the hero in all the stories he tells. One could easily find themself enraptured in his version of events, following his lead because they’re convinced that he must be telling the truth. Toby’s never struggled to make friends but, for some reason, is equally adept at casting them aside. In other words, sometimes he is disloyal simply because there is a more beneficial alternative. Though that’s mostly with his sister. People like to take the things they’ve always had for granted."

✧ Mother:
Name: Elara White (nee. Fletcher)
Age: 40
Education: Hogwarts graduate, Ravenclaw
Profession: Department of Magical Accidents and Catastrophes, Obliviator
Personality: Kind, smart, artistic, creative, a force to be reckoned with

"Elara White is a good mother. She is stern where her husband is not, calm where he excessively worries. Her care-free laugh when she plays with her children aired the rooms of their house for years, dispersing her husband's worries until all that was left was the love he has for his family. Alongside this, she works as an Obliviator for the Ministry, bringing home stories of nosy Muggles and their wandering eyes, though she always insists that it is the wizards who are truly at fault. She is a busy soul, and, when the weather allows it, can be found outside with a paintbrush in hand. Replicating the harsh Scottish landscape is an excellent way of freeing oneself from the stress of having two mischievous children."

✧ Father:
Name: Finley White
Age: 41
Education: Hogwarts graduate, Ravenclaw
Profession: Department of International Magical Cooperation
Personality: Patient, logical, introvert, optimist, loyal

"Finley White is a very intelligent man. After Hogwarts, he could have become one of the best magical innovators of their time. The thing stopping him? Love. Kind, caring Elara had caught him in her spell. Her joyous laughter touched a chord inside of him that made further studying pale in comparison. He no longer fretted over the organisation of his textbooks and pondered how to win over Elara instead. Nineteen years later, he still ensures that their kitchen remained perfectly organised, but laughs along with his wife when one of their children manages to burn their hair along with the toast."

✧ Grandmother:
Name: Winella White

Age: 79
Education: Secondary school graduate
Profession: Retired
Personality: Witty, stubborn, dreamy, whimsical, forgetful

"Winella White is Margo’s paternal grandmother. Even though she is a rather small lady, her fierce nature makes sure that no wizard ever sees muggles as weak. She divorced Finley’s father upon the revelation of his magic — not because she was against the idea but because he had not appreciated the fact that she ‘already knew magic existed’. She says it speaks to her through the floorboards of their house and in the strange patterns that form in her sewing overnight. The rest of her family question these things, but avoid any proclamation of their judgements… dear old Winnie is quite adept at using her walking stick to get wherever and whatever she wanted."

✧ Mimi:
Family dog
Name: Mimi
Age: 2 and 1/2
Colour: Black, dark brown eyes
Personality: Joyful, excitable, playful, cuddly

"Usually a blurred bundle of black fur, Mimi has more energy than all of her family combined. Her curiosity knows no bounds, though it can be easily reigned in by Elara or Margo—her strong female companions. The family adopted her from a muggle rescue shelter about a month before Toby left for Hogwarts, when she was shy and jumpy. Over time, she became more and more carefree around the kindness of the Whites, falling especially for Margo as she too was an excitable young girl with a lack of friends. Unfortunately, jealousy burned in Toby because he rarely saw their dog due to his education. He worked hard to change his relationship with Mimi during the school holidays, though everyone knows it’s consistency that really forms a bond.

Perhaps he'll become the favourite now that Margo has her own special Lord of the Underworld..."

Personality

 Funny ✧ Curious ✧ Witty ✧ Loyal ✧ Energetic ✧ Stubborn ✧ Smart ✧ Spontaneous ✧ Ambitious

A creature of change, Margo's emotions guide her through life, but they are not a book to be observed by the outside world. Probe too deep and she will scowl, stand and leave you wondering exactly what it is that she is hiding. The answer? Her heart. Not a love easily caught, this girl's affections are strong and unyielding. Her loyalty is a shy and cautious thing, but once coaxed out of its shell you'll be locked in its jaws for years to come. Banter is her art form -- free, expressive and allowing. Put her in a cage and she'll slither, scratch, and eventually fly her way out, slamming the door behind her. Upon the few occasions that she is not busy chasing the whispers of adventure, you'll find her curled up in the common room, thinking about her previous escapades with a soothing cup of tea to keep her fiery character from flickering out.

Sarcastic ✧ Rude ✧ Erratic ✧ Klutzy ✧ Rebellious ✧ Tactless ✧ Temperamental ✧ Dramatic

Harnessing the sting that words can inflict is Margo's day to day occupation, so oversensitiveness is not an option in a possible companion. However, a friendly reminder to get off her 'high horse' might be met with grumbling acceptance -- the knowledge that she is not the only independent soul in this world being something she needs to reflect upon more often. Her far from stable temperament is also a rather limiting, if amusing, factor. Moods that change from East to West in a single, emotional day are not something she strives to allow,  but following the winds of change comes with the price of its many ups and downs. Below her spiky exterior, Margo's emotions seize her heart with their formidable strength, inspiring spur of the moment decisions and spontaneity in someone who tries so hard to shield their heart from the world.

Image

Appearance

Hair ✧ Dark blond, shoulder length

"Don't forget that it had pink highlights for most of April... fun times."

Eye colour ✧ Amber

"I know they're rare - feel free to be jealous!"

Height ✧ 143cm

"Does it really matter? If I want to look imposing, I will."

Usual expressions ✧ Smirking, mildly amused

"Try and make me cry. I dare you."

Normal fashion ✧ Scorpion earrings, brightly coloured bandanna

"All homemade! Don't you dare doubt my sewing prowess."

With amber eyes that glitter with a whirlwind of emotions, Margo sees the world through the flyaway strands of her messy hair. Dark blond in colour, it's most often held off of her face with a coloured bandanna, revealing her pierced ears to the world. Having done them with a bag of ice and a needle in her bedroom, Margo is undoubtedly proud of her craftsmanship. Usually dangling from her earlobes are her treasured scorpion earrings, their hand twisted metal a faded silver colour. Margo is not a particularly tall creature and does not like to be reminded of this fact. Ever. Luckily, she struts around in high black boots which have a good 5-centimetre wedge underneath, giving her the chance to be imposing if she so desires.

Likes/Dislikes

Blackberries ✧ Colour ✧ Astronomy ✧ Sarcasm ✧ Tea ✧ Embroidery ✧ Guitar ✧ Late nights

To Margo White, the best food to have blessed the earth is blackberries. Windy autumns full of ladders stuck in hedges and purple-stained smiles in the sun... well, maybe some traditions are best left unchanged. Looking up to the stars with a telescope and mapping the future is just another way of plotting an adventure; only this adventure hasn't yet been made possible. Bold colours call to a similarly bold soul because, well, who wants to be boring and put someone's eyes through the monotonous torture that is black and white? To spread her colour around the world, Margo sews. Whether it's embellished boots or a handy bandanna, bright colours are sure to make an appearance. The single outlet for her emotions, however, is music. With the ambition of a true Slytherin, Margo braved the muggle world to teach herself how to play the guitar. Do you know of the mythical learning resource 'youtube'? Now that she has the basics down, music scores are her oyster. She can now play 'The Beatles' without fear of an exploding record player!

Flying ✧ Broccoli ✧ Oversensitivness ✧ Narrow-mindedness ✧ Early mornings ✧ Routine

Be bold, is Margo’s motto, seize the day. That being said, getting out of bed before 10  at the weekend is just wasting a perfectly good bed. Half of the world's days are nighttime, so why not explore the night? Watch the sunset and witness the rising of a whole new world to discover. Sleep only when washed away by the tides of fatigue and wake up (late) the next morning for a whole new, uncharted day. Never consume the mini trees that call themself edible, for their revolting taste is something that shall not change, and do not get upset when sarcasm stings your feelings -- retaliate! But, more than anything else, never express a narrow mind in the company of Margo White. You think being different is something irritating and to be abhorred? Be gone. This playful girl may not explode but her temper will roar if you express these thoughts. Her eyes will freeze fire and her words will cut you. Anger is an emotion she cannot control.

"SOMETIMES WE NEED OUR LITTLE NESSECITIES TO KEEP US SANE"

These are the little objects in Margo's life that are special to her and make her into the character she is. All can be found within her dorm and a few are usually on her person. Mess with any one of them and you'll be sorry.

Margo's guitar:
Reducio
ImageMargo first found this beautiful dusty case in her attic in the summer before her second year {.} and, after some digging, discovered it had belonged to her grandfather, William. She gradually learnt the basics from youtube on the computers in her local library, and later on purchased tabs on score in the local music store. Margo currently plays the guitar 3-4 times a week.

Margo's Sewing kit:

A torn piece of fabric lying about the castle? No problem - Margo White'll take it! Margo collects fabrics in order to patch up and make her own clothes which is something she does when it rains and is unable to pursue outside adventures.

NO LONGER MISCELLANEOUS - WELCOME TO MY THREAD IDEAS ARCHIVE!

If you like any and want to use them - owl me! Most of my ideas are lighthearted and fun but I like that. I'm not a shallow person. I just believe that writing should make a writer happy and voila- welcome to what makes me happy:

Threads I'd like to do with Margo:
Reducio
- Spice on the Ice
Reducio
Has Margo ever been ice-skating? Well... no. But does she want anyone to know that? Hell no! So she decides to host a little gathering on the Great Lake before Christmas. Best skater wins a basket of her dad's home spice-cakes. And whilst they might be a little brown on the edges, they're to die for.

Does your character think they can beat the odds and win? Or are they like Margo, who's trying avidly to stop herself from bruising her backside and looking like a fool? We all know it'll happen anyway...

- Muggles and Their Modernity
Reducio
Margo is no stranger to the muggle world and even attended a muggle school before Hogwarts. However, to improve her guitar playing over the holidays she is forced to venture much farther than before. Her curiosity has been snagged, and she needs an experienced individual to explain the finer details of their world. What is the ‘internet’? How can somebody be ‘on line’? And most importantly, what kind of magic is ‘youtube’?

In return, Margo can go into great depth about the Weird Sisters and the Wizarding Wireless Network. She is determined to experience the ‘best of both worlds’ — if only she knew where that muggle phrase came from...

- Accept the Accent
Reducio
Margo has a rather prominent Scottish accent, so it’s only realistic that, at some point at Hogwarts, somebody would try to mimic it. And it is only logical that afterwards, the two might not be on the best of terms.

So, in revenge, Margo tries to persuade the class to over-exaggerate her tormentor's accent.

Save to say, a fierce competition is born.

In the corridor after class, the two students spend hours trying to outdo each other by mimicking accents from all over the world. Australian, Russian, American, French, Irish... you name it, they’ll try it. What they don’t realise, however, is that they’re forming a silly, lighthearted friendship whilst pretending to beat each other.

Yes, the bond may be based off some bad random knowledge of different cultures, but it’s still there.

- Get Margo on a broom
Reducio
This (cackles), this definitely needs to happen at some point :sweatingbullets: . So if you want the person manipulating Margo to be you (bear in mind your character'll have a crazy, terrified teenage girl on their hands), please owl me!

First meeting threads:
Reducio
- Wha- wa- dat-?
Reducio
Character A runs into Character B, but instead of them both being fine like it happens in all the stories, Character A has seriously injured Character B's mouth. B is in pain and seriously annoyed with A, who is chatting mindlessly away as they accompany B to the hospital wing.

But there's a small communication issue.

B is trying (and failing) to speak around their split lip. But it doesn't stop them from insulting the pants off of a rather oblivious A, who, despite the angry expression on B's face, thinks that they're being nice.

E.g.
B: Yho' 'air ooks 'ike uh 'ats nes' (Your hair looks like a rat's nest)

A: I have an air of cat-ness? Strange phrasing but yes! I do have a cat! Thanks for noticing. Say, would you like to meet her?

B groans.

- Locked? (desperately in need of new title)
Reducio
Character A somehow managed to get left behind in class. Perhaps they weren't paying as much attention as possible and fell asleep snoring on their desk. Or maybe they were taking notes from the textbook with their nose so close to the paper that they didn't notice when the rest of the class upped and left. Either way, they're in a bit of a predicament. They've been locked in.

Character B happens to be strolling the corridors and hears some yelling from behind a classroom door. They decide that yes, they'll turn the key that's luckily in the lock. But only for a price...

- Forget Me Not
Reducio
Person A is confused because their remembrall is red and they cannot, for the life of them, figure out why. It bugs them all day until suddenly, they lock gazes with Person B. Funnily enough, the red fog in the small glass sphere immediately fades.

But... now A needs to figure out how they knew (and forgot) Person B in the first place. Were they friends as really tiny children? Or was B that really horrible second year on their first day who neglected to mention the trick stair in the staircase? And, most importantly of all, does Person B even remember Person A?

- Stop! Lower your weapon!
Reducio
Person A is taking a nice evening walk around the halls until they decide to inspect a strange shiny object lying on the floor. Weirdly enough, it is a polished silver fork. They shrug and decide to take it back to the Great Hall.

Action movie enthusiast Person B has just come out of class. When they see a random stranger holding a glinting object in the shadows, do they hesitate? No they do not! They tackle Person A and manage to pin them to the floor.

Save to say, the introductions are rather awkward from there...

The Humle Homework Hero
Reducio
Person A is bored to death with homework and Person A happens to need a partner in crime.

More coming soon...

Ideas I want to read but am too lazy to write:
Reducio
- Catch Me If You Can
Reducio
Person A likes to bend the rules. Whether it's writing on the walls in class or drawing moustaches on students' faces at night, they live for the thrum of adrenaline in their veins.

Person B happens to be there whenever Person A is pulling their pranks. It's always their socks hanging from the rafters or their school shirt dyed pink. And they've had enough. They are determined to catch B in action.

Who knew the passio-... hatred one could build up in the thrill of a chase.

-Is This Briber-eek!?
Reducio
Person A is desperate for study notes but Person B is disinclined to say yes. So A starts doing things for B like buttering their toast (and savagely shoving it in their mouth when they ask questions) and carrying their bag, how does B react?
(Romance/eventual friendship)

- Call me Psychy
Reducio
Person A has discovered they have a knack for solving other people's problems (if not their own). They decide to start up a small business where they trade favours for therapeutic advice. What happens when B comes along and starts talking about how much they hate A's crush?

Svitania ‘Vita’ Sýkora
Свитания Сикора
svih-TAN-ee-ah sikh-OR-ah
Means ‘Dawn bird’ or ‘Bird of the dawn’
Age: Thirteen
Year: Third Year
Blood Status: Half-Blood
Nationality: Slovak/Russian

The Thoughts of a Mirror:

Mirrors are shallow beings - which is strange if you consider that they don't have faces of their own. Fortunately, the mirror in Svitania’s dorm rarely sees her face. But when it does, it makes sure to remember all the physical traits that set her apart. Her masses of dark, curly hair hang unbrushed by her face and thick, flyaway strands are forever tainting her vision. But that isn’t what causes the mirror such woe. Oh no. Instead of seeking the mirror’s opinion every morning, Vita throws on her robes and leaves, her hem trailing after her on the cold stone floor. The lonely mirror longs for a different reflection from the same monotonous bedpost, but perhaps it’s best that it isn’t Vita who provides this relief. Her dark gaze could mar the fragile glass with its anger, and her thick, ungroomed eyebrows could upset the mirror’s delicate stomach.

Another reason why Vita’s face isn’t often glimpsed by the mirror is her height. The piece of furniture is awkwardly angled so that short girls can pick at warts on their noses (hey, no judging! We’re all witches here). Whilst most girl’s chins would at least be glimpsed in the reflection, Vita’s is not one of them. She’s taller than most due to her family’s strong genes. The Sýkora/Evanovich women aren’t your average damsels in distress. They’d jump into the action before the nearest man could even scream for help.
A Beginners Guide to Winning her Heart (nobody said it would be easy):

First off, if someone’s parents name their daughter Svitania, it doesn’t mean you should call them that. Her name is Vita, not some poetic nonsense about sunrise. But once you’ve correctly addressed her, it gets a little more tricky. Vita is under the impression that she doesn’t need anybody’s company to survive. If most people are going to be judgemental then why not ignore them all? I know what you’re thinking: why bother overcoming this minor mountain hurdle? Well, the contents of this independent witch’s heart might just surprise you. Underneath a lot of anger and nonchalance is, in fact, a sense of humour. Do or say something bold that highlights your disregard for modern stereotypes and you might just coax out her laugh.

Some say friendship is built on laughter, but for Vita, this is sadly not the case. A milestone? Sure. But not a bond. In order for her to actually like you (gasp), she has to understand you. Now, even though Vita isn’t an expert in the art of communication, she would still find the spilling of secrets on a first encounterance strange. So you have to have patience. Get to know her slowly through shared activities and moments. She’ll be wary at first, but if you’re kind and careful she won’t snap at you. If you like plants, talk about them. Babble and gush to the extreme because she won’t admit she loves them too if you don’t. Vita’s words are not her weapon, they’re a defence she uses when she feels trapped. Her body is her weapon. Growing up with three older brothers made her appreciate the exhilaration of a scuffle in the mud. Prickly as she may seem, she’s not averse to physical fights and competition. Challenge her.

The trickiest part of Vita is her emotions. Most of the time she knows her own heart, so if you question it, she’ll get angry. Her temper is hotter than a roaring fire, so it’s safe to say you’ll want to avoid this occurrence. There’s just one thing you need to remember: her emotions are hers, and hers alone. As long as you don’t analyse or challenge them, you should survive. But avoiding being attacked isn't winning her heart - you need to win her trust. Vita is someone who appreciates the notion of balance. If you put your faith in her, she’ll put hers out in the open too. However, she might take a while to decide if she can actually let you see her feelings. Making this decision is the hardest part. Once she’s chosen to like you, she’ll stay stubbornly by your side for the rest of eternity... but there’s still one thing you need to avoid.

Never insult Vita’s family. She may not hesitate to point out their flaws, but she does love them all the same. Okay, so her motherly love is questionable, but everyone has a favourite parent, right? If you’re invited to her house, then you know she trusts you. Not only does it emphasise the lack of a guiding female figure in her and her brothers' lives, but it's also the holder or Vita's biggest secret. As her friend, you will have noticed her passion for spell creation and dark magic, but as a person with eyes, you’ll also have realised that her family specialises in combat. So when they gush about their daughter’s 'fighting' future in the magical world, you will be able to see the reality behind Vita’s humourless mask. The day her school makes her choose between her family and herself will be a dark day indeed. All because of one little secret: she doesn’t want her birthright.
A Fairytale - The Witch and the Gypsy’s Daughter (and sons):

"In deepest Russia, where blizzards howled for half the year and the ground was barren and cold, lived a Witch. She had dark eyes that could freeze fire and tumbling blond curls that men wished they could touch. But no sane person ever cared about her looks, because the havoc she could wreak with her fists was so much more exciting. Throw in her magic wand and pristine bloodline and you had a nearly unbeatable opponent — that is, if you could bear to lay a hand on such a beauty. Unfortunately, however, some people didn’t like her attitude as much as her looks. Her sharp gaze chilled blood and her name instilled shivers among her peers. She enjoyed a good fight far more than she should have, and only stopped once blood had been spilt on the floor. Her name? Zoya Evanovich.

Zoya spoke three languages: Russian, English and Slovak. But it wasn’t until she was in her early twenties that she discovered her love for the last. Her parents owned a second estate in Slovakia which she often visited to escape her legacy. Behind a tall wooden fence to the East of the property was a small Roma settlement. Unbeknownst to her parents, Zoya liked to visit the gipsy folk once the sun fell from the sky and their bonfires lit up the night. It was on such an evening that she met Manfri. He was a man who loved his job more than anything, and once Zoya learnt what his profession was, she knew that she had to learn more. She watched as Manfri taught the local school children various martial arts, all with a giant grin across his face. The tattoos circling his wrists didn’t bother the youngsters and they liked to climb on his back before and after the class. When he accused Zoya of trespassing afterwards, the two fighters looked into each other’s eyes and immediately fell in love…"

At least, that was the bedtime story that Vita's father had recounted every night before she was ten. Her father was still the same warmhearted guy, but when he talked about her mother it was like he was thinking of a stranger. Whilst she had been dating Manfri, Zoya had landed herself a job hunting down dangerous Wizarding criminals across the globe. She lived for the thrill of the chase and the sweet tang of victory once she finally managed to track a criminal down. When she became pregnant, the few members of her family whom she hadn't cut off expected her to move into a more gentle career, but Zoya valued her freedom much more than she valued ease. She stayed in Slovakia for a year to raise her newborn child and departed just after her son's first birthday to continue her career. Manfri felt his heart ache every time she left him and their three children but knew that his job at the local school would not bring in the money required for them to attend Durmstrang. He thought of magic as God's gift and wished that he too had been born with the power to possess a wand.

So Vita grew up in with her father. She was a restless child, and always wanted to be outside with her older brothers in the mud. Ignác may have been closer to her in both age and temperament, but Miro was always her favourite. He held her back from following Ignác into the highest trees and the fastest rapids and showed her that the art of conversation could also entertain a walking mind. Miro alone could calm her temper, and often slung an arm around her shoulders like neither of them had a care in the world. Vita wrote to him constantly while he was away at school, yearning for gossip on the best fighters in his year. But much less welcome were the letters they received from her mother. Zoya's letters were packed full of information on her career and her latest catch, and whilst her father treasured them, Vita had a sinking suspicion that the woman prefered to chase the thrill of her next fight than be with her family.

When Vita first entered Durmstrang, she scowled. She had never been around many people and only bonded with her father's students because they liked to fight. Here, where so many students were from prestigious pureblood families like her mother's, Vita was lost. On her first night in the dorm, she set a potted plant on her bedside table for company. She'd always had slightly green fingers and had been the only child to help her father with the plants in their garden at home. The other girls didn't notice it for several days, but when they did, Vita insisted it had always been there. She watered it when they slept, unsure as to why she didn't want other people aware of her passion for nature.

It was only Vita's second week in Russia when she learnt her brothers' secret. She had been asked if she was an only child because of her unknown surname and had rushed to consult her brothers in confusion. It turned out that they were registered to the school as Miro and Ignác Evanovich -- using their mother's maiden name. When Vita looked to Miro for a smile and a kind explanation he wouldn't meet her gaze and muttered something about a higher success rate for purebloods. That was the first time that she ever turned her anger on her eldest brother. She shouted and screamed and they didn't speak for weeks. Vita's father was her only hero now, and he was non-magical. The siblings forgave each other in the end, but Vita made sure that this was something that she was never going to forget.

Vita thrived in herbology and any combat-related courses, of course, but the thrill that she felt when studying curses and darker magic surprised her. Everybody in Vita's family had taken the Magical Combat course for generations and there were even delegated spaces on her family's living room wall for the complimentary swords that she and her siblings would receive at the supposed completion of their combat training. But Vita grew to realise that she didn't want the weapon. Fighting may be her hobby, but Dark Magic would be her career. How to tell her family..?
