Aaron Jones (being the muggle-born that he is) had no idea of the magical world prior to receiving his Hogwarts letter, so he grew up immersed in muggle culture. Even now, after his first year at Hogwarts, he still finds himself missing muggle things. In particular, video games and cell phones and television. So much of his time this past summer was spent catching up on the latest games and acquainting himself with the new normal of wearing a mask out in public. Not constantly carrying around his wand was only a little weird, considering he did not have the same talent with it that many of his peers displayed. He was able to transition back to Muggle life very easily considering he had not yet started to rely on magic (and probably never would to the extent of half-bloods or pure-bloods).

More than that, he has found that magic makes things harder than one might think! Aaron is not talented with his wand, so tasks that others find easy - like lifting an impossibly heavy trunk - cause him to look for the muggle alternatives. While most would simply cast the levitation charm, he has instead spent his time training his body and choosing to lift with his knees rather than with his wand. Back at home, he told stories of the house elves that the Hogwarts castle employed, only to have his mother double his chores that day to discourage him from ever getting one. He needed to learn the hard work that most people had to put in - something he was already familiar with, but that his mother apparently wanted to emphasize.

Reflecting on the Blossom Ball that he hosted with friends, he regaled his brother with the story of the monstrous vampyr mosps. Aaron recalled how he had handled them in a very muggle fashion - trying to kick and punch them away, rather than casting incendio like most of the school had. The only real magical talent he has is flying, but even with that he prefers other muggle methods of transportation. He views flying in a solely extracurricular fashion - meaning only for the love of Quidditch - and not so much as a way to get from point a to point b. For that, he would prefer an old-fashioned car ride - or even a train ride like the Hogwarts Express.

Overall, Aaron will probably always prefer the muggle methods of life to the magical ones. His talent with a wand won't take off like his talent with a broom, so he relies on his own two hands more often than not. Muggle fighting is the way for him, not dueling. And a phone call or text message means more to him than a letter (although he does find the owls incredibly cool).

Alexander, like many other students at hogwarts, is a muggle-born; he grew up nearly entirely unaware of the wizarding world, and his letter of acceptance was as great of a surprise to him as it was to his parents.
He did not grow up entirely unaware of magic, however. Alexander's father would tell him stories of Wizards and Witches, magic potions, ancient treasures guarded by ferocious beasts. One of these such stories that particularly caught his attention was that of the philosopher's stone.
A legendary alchemical substance, capable of turning any metal that it touches into pure gold, created by Nicholas Flamel.

Alexander's family is poor. He rarely gets to spend time with his parents simply because they have to work so much. Even though he'll never admit to it, Alexander resents this. He longs to be able to afford some of the more expensive toys his friends have, he wishes he were able to invite friends over to his house without fear they'll judge him for his lack of wealth, but above all he desperately wants to be able to spend more time with his parents.
From his view, all of his problems would simply go away if he could only weild the power of the philosopher's stone; an infinite supply of gold would wipe away all problems related to money.

Upon receiving his letter of acceptance, and learning more about the wizarding world, something changed. What had once been merely a pleasant dream now seemed like a possible reality. All throughout his journey to Hogwarts, a tiny portion of his mind was constantly thinking about the stone, and what he'd do with it when he somehow managed to get it.

However, he eventually became aware of the fact that the philosopher's stone had been destroyed. At first Alexander was baffled. It couldn't have been destroyed. It couldn't have been destroyed. Such an amazing item, why would anyone want to get rid of it? In his opinion, Nicholas Flamel had been greedy. He had decided to just let himself die, and let the secret of the stone die with him.

Alexander still holds on to the hope that there may still be someway to copy the stone's magical abilities. Surely, surely, there was some book at this school which would contain the answer. If some old wizard had been able to turn things into gold, then he could too!

Now, it would obviously take a lot of work. He understood this. First, he needed to understand what type of magic the stone used.
There is only one problem;

Alexander knows nothing about magic.

Sure, he has managed to learn what the different types of spells are by skimming through some of his textbooks, but he doesnt actually understand any of them. Transfiguration is, in his mind, turning one thing into another, but he doesn't know it's limits, or its proper applications.

He isnt aware of his lack of knowledge. He just believes that eventually, he'll find some spell in a dusty old book that'll teach him how to turn metal into gold. Whether such a spell exists doesn't matter yet; if only one person has ever made a philospher's stone, then he's going to need to become better at transfiguration.

In summary, Alex currently believes that even if he did find some spell that would turn metal into gold, he wouldn't be able to cast it, which is entirely accurate; he is, after all, a complete beginner. So, he intends to study the spells in his transfiguration textbook as best he can. He's going to do extra work, he's going to pay more attention in class, he's going to read ahead and test more advanced spells on his own.

And maybe, he believes, someday he'll go home to his parents. He'll take out his wand, wave it over the cutlery cupboard, and they'll open it to find a tray full of gold. They'll be rich! They won't have to worry about money! They'll get to spend more time together, as a family. Alexander won't have to sit at home alone anymore.

Being part of a team was great. It made you feel whole, useful and you had a family who would always support and back you. For Annie, that was the Quidditch team, but other things did tempt her. The dueling team had started looking for members and her curiosity was perked. It was questionable to change at this point. She was already tight knit with the Quidditch team and a loyalty in her heart had formed for them. The only other reason besides loyalty that held her back was her stubbornness.

Quidditch was flying, sure it was skill but it was also luck. Dueling was a whole other story. You could never prepare yourself for you didn't know what your opponent would do which scared her. But besides her fears, she was too prideful to fail and let down her team. She had done so and felt bad in Quidditch before, but dueling was a lot more physical and you could cause actual damage to another person. Watching your teammate fall down or having all the weight on your shoulders was a hard task, nothing like what she had to do in Quidditch.

A book slammed, startling the girl out of her thoughts. She blinked and yawned, glancing around and taking in the familiar sights of the Common Room. The last student had just picked up their items and headed to their dormitory. Annie stretched and glanced back down at her book. Transfiguration had always been challenging for her. She sighed and stood up before turning to the armchair she had previously been seating in. The girl picked her wand up rom the table and practiced a spell under he breath a few times before getting in her casting stance. Two feet slightly apart. Left arm by her side, right arm raised but not extended. With a quick extension and point of her wand she spoke boldly. "Color-VAIR-ee-uh!" The witch saw as the chair slowly fade into a pale blue color. She walked around the chair and inspected it before returning to the front and nodding. Luckily, the entire chair changed to the right color she thought of and there were no patterns or mishaps.

A small huff escaped from her nose as she realized she would have to change it back. Focusing once more on the color she wanted it to change back into, she readied herself in her stance and chanted the spell once again. "Color-VAIR-ee-uh!" In another blink of an eye the chair was back to normal. Her eyes began to droop, but she wasn't nearly satisfied with her work. Yes she said the spell correctly, stood correctly and preformed the action twice but she needed it to be perfect. "Color-VAIR-ee-uh! Color-VAIR-ee-uh! Color-VAIR-ee-uh!" The witch pointed her wand at the other chair and two love seats in the common, room each turning them to different colors before exhaustion heavily fell upon her. Annie plopped down onto one of the now pink love seats, wand gripped tightly in hand until she slowly drifted off to sleep.

Describe why this fits your character:

Haley is a half-blood, has a pure soul, is a loving girl and grew up in an environment that has always opposed the dark arts and teaches tolerance for everyone. No one ever thought she could be a Parselmouth. What could be in Haley's genes that she has such an extraordinary talent? She was to find out late.

For family reasons, her parents decided to move to London to establish contact with her mother's family. Haley learned late that there was once bad blood between her mother and her family, but she didn't know why for a long time.

Only later Haley will learn that her whole family is a very old pureblood family with a very long pedigree. Haley's ancestors attached great importance to pure blood and detested half-blood or worse Muggleborn. It was a tradition in her family for descendants to come to Slytherin and so there was great disappointment in Haley's mother. There were indeed distant relatives who were also in other houses, but this did not happen for many, many years. But when she entered into a relationship with a Muggle, she was rejected by her own family.

Over time the family had realized their mistakes and changed their way of thinking. Although it was often difficult for them to consider all wizards and witches as equal, they tried hard, because they wanted to reunite the family and finally meet Haley.

Haley's grandmother tried to persuade her daughter to reveal the family history to Haley and let her know who her ancestors were, but Haley's mother always blocked. She was too afraid that the family would fall back into old patterns. Haley was so young and her soul was pure, she would never forgive herself if they soiled her pure character.

One day something unbelievable happened when Haley's parents took her to friends who had a son a few years older than Haley. In his room, he kept a snake in a display case. Haley felt sorry for the snake but was also very interested in it and spent a lot of time watching it that day. In the afternoon the son came to the adults and asked them what language Haley would speak but he also emphasized that he doubted that this was really a language because it sounded much more like hissing than a language. Her parents were confused and Haley's mother took care of her daughter. When she saw her daughter sitting in front of the display case and saw a snake inside, she stopped breathing.

Haley looked at her mother sadly and said the snake was not happy and wanted to come out, but Haley told her she's not allowed to let her out. This was the day Haley's mother realized that the genes of her ancestors were running through Haley's blood more than she could have ever imagined.

She only knew one person in her family personally who was also Parselmouth, and that was her great-grandmother. But this talent had already appeared in the family in previous generations. Not often, but it was always the women in the family. But this could not be the case with Haley, her mother tried to convince herself. But she was wrong, Haley had inherited the talent to talk to snakes from her great-great-grandmother.

Haley's parents decided not to tell the family or let Haley ever know that she had spoken to a snake as a child. They hoped for a long time that this would never happen again, but deep inside they knew how unlikely this was. So Haley had inherited a talent and then one of the dark arts, at least that's how it is considered. After all, some of the darkest wizards in history had been one, just like Salazar Slytherin and even worse Lord Voldemort.

Haley is currently unaware of her talent, as her parents would give anything to keep this a secret. They didn't want Haley to have such a dark talent and much more they wanted to protect her from society. But now that Haley went to Hogwarts, her parents didn't have the chance to influence her as much as they used to. During her first year at Hogwarts, Haley will not only learn more about her ancestors, but also about her ability to talk to snakes.

Robyn was born to Amelie Finley, a full blooded Veela who had long since fallen in love with with a wizard born named Oliver. As much as it was discouraged from Amelie growing close to him, her family begging for her to find a nice Vodyanoy to make with to continue on their strong legacy of pure blooded Veelas, Amelie refused. She found a joy in kindness in the man that she hadn't experienced before and was thus infatuated with him. It wasn't hard for Oliver to fall just as hard, especially with her race. It was a slow and steady romance, but one that blossomed nonetheless.

After marrying they eventually had a boy as their first son, Felix Finley. He was of course part-Veela, taking after their mother heavily in appearance with stark pale skin, and icy blonde hair. Her mother absolutely doted on him from the moment he was born, overjoyed to have a male part-Veela that would turn out just as beautiful as she. She had always been terrified of producing a Vodyanoy who were hideous and grotesque. She had always wanted to have a boy, and here he was. It wasn't but around two years later when she eventually had Robyn, hoping for a second boy but ultimately coming up short with Robyn. Similarly beautiful with pale skin and beautiful blonde hair, but her mother's fascination with male part-Veelas and her brother never ceased.

Robyn grew up well taken care of and educated, there was no denying that. Her needs were consistently met, but the love and devotion was lacking in comparison to her brother. Felix tried to make up for it, to spend extra time with her when he could especially as he felt like he was suffocating under their mother's love. Robyn didn't have any to breathe in, let alone suffocate. Her father did what he could when he was home, but he was often traveling for his job in their early childhood. Soon, Robyn came to resent being half-Veela, not only for her being too typical for her mother, but being too special to wizards and purebloods. There was no happy middle of existence which she craved from being at opposite ends of the spectrum. She couldn't even hide once attending Hogwarts because her brother was already there, with their striking similarity and him being unabashed about their race she had no place to hide.

As soon as she learned the hair changing charm she would charm herself as often as needed. Throughout her childhood and adult life she always made herself a ginger, wanting to resemble her father more than anything. Overtime as she spent more time wandering the grounds and outdoors to escape from the suffocation of the walls of Hogwarts she developed freckle after freckle, delighting her with every one that appeared and marred her otherwise perfect skin in the eyes of her mother. The more she developed to look like her dad, the more overjoyed she was. Her brown eyes had always been something she kept from her father's genetics, another thing her mother despised in her. Even to this day, she attempts to hide the side of her that is Veela. Though, with the inevitable charm and the rare debilitating scream she is always found out eventually.

Even when one grows up in a wizarding family, they still cannot fully appreciate it until they are officially indoctrinated with an acceptance letter and a wand. Alina had seen her father and grandmother do magic for every task big and small since as long as she could remember. The same went for the hired help. Still, it wasn't really until she obtained her own wand and had her first day of Charms that it became a reality for her to experience first hand.

It was a fascinating subject and one she couldn't wait to learn everything she possibly could except...she was a first year. She could say the right words and perhaps get caught up on a slight mispronunciation or do the right movements but maybe not at the right tempo or speed. It was early in her First Year when she was paired up with Gryffindor Rose Moon for a partner project. Once the project was finalized, the two girls decided to keep meeting frequently to better their skills. They practiced and practiced so that the wand became an extension of themselves. They could maneuver with ease. They could state the words clearly.

They worked together and a friendship formed and that friendship grew so much that Rose became one of Alina's best friends. But in all that training she didn't just gain a great friend, but she gained a dedication to the art of Charms, both stating them and casting them. She now looked at each new incantation learned and took the time to learn the spell, practice the spell, study the spell. She took the time to fully understand and know the spell and now Charms was one of her strongest subjects.

Not everyone was blessed with the ability to perform magic - like her mother who was a squib, like some of her friends' parents who were muggles, like some of her neighbors that she loved dearly. She knew that magic wasn't something to take for granted. She was grateful for it and therefore she would show it the respect that it deserved.

That, and she was at school here to learn and get the most out of this magical ability that she had been given. Otherwise, she could have gone to any old school and learned the basics and succeeded in a life away from the wizarding world. But no, Alina Rosier was a witch, and she was going to be one to be reckoned with when it came to spells and incantations.

EVASIVE MANEUVERS
Reducio
Alina had always been a take initiative kind of girl. Maybe it had something to do early on with being a twin. When her parents had their ultrasound, the mediwitch showed them the image of Baby A and Baby B, which later would be Alina and Bella. Then February 14, 2008 came along and on that evening, the two little girls entered into the world - first Baby A followed by Baby B.

Alina had always been the one to go first. She was the first to crawl, the first to walk, the first to talk. It wasn't just because she was more determined than her identical twin sister but rather because she would take in the big picture of the world around her. She wanted to see what was on the other side of the room, she wanted to see what was beyond the corridor, she wanted to be a part of the conversation, not just listen.

She could never do anything half way either. If she was going to plan something, she planned BIG. She planned for it all. When she and two other friends decided they would make a pact of friendship, she listed it all out, made rules, painted a portrait of the three of them to hang in the dormitory, and ordered matching bracelets to remind them of their bond.

When she would do Tarot card readings for her fellow classmates, she would decorate the space, provide snacks and refreshments, have them sign a legal disclaimer just so it all seemed more official.

When she would make a notebook where she listed the plantlife and vegetation she found on the grounds of Hogwarts, she would draw the plant at multiple angles and list out where it was found and what she already knew about it.

She was working on a map since First Year of the school. She noticed that sometimes some rooms seemed to be somewhere and other times not. She seemed to notice that some rooms were sometimes larger and other times not. Some moving staircases would move every couple minutes and some not for days.

Yes, she was a girl who paid attention. She saw all that was around her and seemed to realize when something was a little off, when something was out of place. Always seeing that big picture lended her to being able to get away just in the nick of time, if something would be falling in the corridors or perhaps a tree branch wanted to snap while she was climbing on a nice afternoon.

She was perceptive and that sort of wit led her with the ability to understand her surroundings and act quickly.

Name of Ability or Race/Talent that you Are Applying for: Perfectionist
Describe why this fits your character:

While Ruka seldom finds something he considers worth concentrating on for long enough to really master any skills, he does like to focus on the things that seem the most useful to him. Having grown up on the streets, he needed to filter his interests from the start, weed out what was clearly just a useless hobby and concentrate on skills contributing to survival. While his urgent need for survival skills is not quite as strong at Hogwarts - though, with the multiple deadly threats seemingly lurking around every corner, Ruka has come to reconsider that - as it used to be on the streets, the instinct is still ingrained in him. Enough so that he would rather spend his time learning new spells over learning how to make a friendship bracelet any day.

Sorry, Willow.

This, however, is not to say that Ruka is not ambitious and determined to succeed. While he likes to focus on what he deems to be important, he does also like perfecting those specific skills. Good is never quite good enough, and mistakes haunt him for days, be it an uneven line in an origami animal or a slightly off colour in a potion. Being stubborn as well, Ruka doesn't like to accept defeat and will work on things until he can exceed his own and everybody else's expectations.

After the death of his father, those traits have become weaker in him as he was struggling with the loss of his only remaining family, but after having met a certain Slytherin underclassman and being adopted into his family, Ruka's focus has been steadily renewed. With new parents to impress, and a safe, comfortable environment to strive in, he has redeveloped his determination to work on the skills he is interested in, be it school work or hobbies.

Already during his second school year has Ruka worked very hard on perfecting his spell casting, practicing tirelessly even after having reached a level high enough to get through his practical exams with ease. Now, with his interests having become a bit more wide spread, he is bringing that same kind of determination into learning other skills as well. Even with his newest hobby of cooking and baking, which he developed over the summer, Ruka has taken to being meticulous with measuring the ingredients and following instructions down to the last line. A perfect end result has become an expectation he doesn't allow himself not to meet.

For Ruka there is either all or nothing. If he doesn't want to perfect something then he barely sees a reason to do it at all, but once he has a reason, being second best simply won't do anymore.

Even if that means working hard to be better than his equally as determined and ambitious little brother.

Sorry, Jack.

Advanced Casting and Evasive Maneuvers
(Applying for two abilities because Alexa is a second year with no abilities at the moment)

For Advanced Casting:

Alexa Mackenzie has been studying spellcasting very hard these past two years at Hogwarts. She is originally from a Muggle family with no known to magical connections, and because she had no exposure to it when she was young, Alexa is absolutely fascinated by all things magical, particularly spell work, the magic she can do herself. With this fascination came the rather surprising (to her, at least!) natural ability to do magic, particularly cast spells. When she arrived at Hogwarts, she was afraid she would not fit in: she was afraid she would even be magical. But then in her first Charms class, the first class where she casted a spell, she found it incredibly easy, for all that she had no background in it. Taking advantage of this natural ability, Alexa worked hard on her spellcasting. Probably more than she even needed to, but she wanted to be excellent. She practiced in empty classrooms constantly, honing her skills as best she knew how: through practice. As a duelist now, she plans to put her experience in spellcasting, as well as her natural ability, into use. Her natural ability probably came from her great-grandmother on her mother’s side. Though Alexa doesn’t know it, Alanna McAvoy, her great-grandmother, was a witch who also attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Alanna was a very skilled witch, especially as a spell caster. Alanna McAvoy was a force to be reckoned with in the late early 1900s: she was. very skilled at dueling. In fact it is not known if she ever even lost a dual, primarily due to her exemplary spellcasting abilities. Like Alexa, Alanna McAvoy's skills seemed to be innate, natural even. But now we see through Alexa that this skill was most likely inherited! Knowing her natural ability with spellcasting, Alexa will eventually look into her own history. And while it will have to be through the Muggles that she does so, she will find some very peculiar things about her great-grandmother in their histories, things she will put together and eventually look for at Hogwarts. She has always wanted to know where her magic has come from, and particularly why it is so strong. All of it comes easily to her, even potions and herbology, but it is with her wand, casting spells, where she truly shines. The ability of Advanced Casting would come very naturally to Alexa Mackenzie. (400 words)

For Evasive Maneuvers:

Alexa Mackenzie has always been light on her feet; she has had to be! Growing up on a small farm in the Scottish Highlands, she is used to quickly dodging out-of-the-way of kicking cows, and stomping horse hooves. Not to mention dodging around chicken poop! Tall for her age, it took her a little while when she was 11 to master her own body, as she was gangly for a while. But now that she is 12, everything seems to come a little more naturally to her, as she has adjusted to her growth spurt. Now, like she was before her growth spurt (when she was younger), she is nimble and quick again. She also learned how to be lied on her feet and exploring the Scottish Highlands surrounding her small farm. Constantly on the move, she has been known to leap small fences easily, simply by running up, planting a hand on the top of the fence, and kicking her legs over it. She deftly moves across waterways without getting wet, jumping quickly from stone to stone, and she never trips in the forest, despite all the undergrowth, rocks, and broken branches. She can scale trees easily, jumping from branch to branch, jumping up to catch a branch and swinging herself over it without any trouble. She has always been very quick, nimble, and fit (except when she was 11; she was awkward and gangly then due to the growth spurt). Now that she has become a duelist for her House, Alexa wants to do them proud, and doesn't plan on being hit by any spells coming her way. Evasive Maneuvers would come easily and naturally to Alexa, her great-grandmother (unbeknownst to Alexa) having been an active and skilled duelist herself. Great granny Alanna McAvoy was light on her feet, quick to dodge any spell, and was never known to have lost a duel in her lifetime. She passed these traits down through the years through the females of her family, until they finally reached Alexa, who is a natural at magic and as nimble as a ballerina (almost!) mostly due to her great-grandmother. It does help also that on her father's side, her grandfather and father were both skilled football players in college, able to handle the ball easily with their feet, without ever tripping up. Now with both sides of her family passing on these traits, Evasive Maneuvers would be easy for Alexa. (406 words)

Raine could only blush in embarrasment and rushed to her own room as she thought about what her aunt had said. A charmer? There was no way that Raine Titania Sage was a charmer. She wasn't attractive at all! Sure, her assets were starting to develop but that wasn't enough to make her charming. Was it?

Her aunt did say that she was witty. That was something that Raine couldn't deny. She always kept her wits about her and she definitely always ensured that she was up on her studies. But there was no way that Raine was up on the latest fashions or even remotely atttractive in a charming sense. She just couldn't see herself as a charmer.

But maybe there was something there she just couldn't see. Apparently other boys her age seemed to think she was charming. She would take her brother to the park and some of the boys her age would just stare at her. And those that wished to strike up a conversation with her seemed to be enthralled by what she had to say. They never replied much...and for that she wondered if she truly was just that charming that she was a distraction to others. Well...maybe distraction was reaching a bit. She knew that she wasn't alluring or beautiful enough to distract boys, but maybe she actually was charming enough to keep their attention off of other things.

Maybe her charm could get her out of trouble too, especially with her professors at school. Most of them were nice enough but she was still a child. There would be plenty of times where she would have to charm her way out of a detention or two. She could slowly see it as the day leading up to her returning to the Hogwarts Express approached and more people gravitated toward her as if they were attracted to something about her.

She could only hope that she could keep this charming side of her for as long as she lived.

Catching Toads was not easy. The slimy little creatures would squirm and hop and skip away from Galton as if their lives depended on it. No harm would ever come to them in Galton's grubby grip, but he could understand the rational. He would run from a giant as well. And he often did have to flee from his toad catching extravaganzas in the local park. The goose.

The goose was the main cause of strife in little Galton's life. It had declared itself the owner of toad pond and would have nothing to do with the splashes Galton caused from his hunt. Even with the boy's growing nimbleness, he still was quite the disturbance. And so the goose would attack.

Gliding silently over the water when Galton's back was turned, the goose would cock its neck back and ready for a strike. Once upon him it would unleash all the fury it held within it's feathers. Peck after peck would land on Galton's arms, legs, or nape. A shrieking Glaton would have to retreat, too much pain to continue the day's toad hunt.

But Galton would not leave the toads un-found and un-caressed. He would go back, as often as he could find the time, to grab more toads. Slowly, as the welts added up, he would get a sense for the goose. It started with an acute paranoia when his feet were in the water, checking his back every few seconds, muscles ready to spring Galton forward and away from the pond. Days of toad snatching would start and end in mere minutes after then began, but this time without any bruises.

As time drove on, so did the feud between child, toads, and the goose. Paranoia calmed as the child grew more and more aware of the goose's every move and intent. Soon Galton was snatching toads up to admire seconds before the first peck hit non-existent flesh. There was less checking of his back, and more an innate sense of the feathers grew near. Of course there were still mishaps. The goose would still win in the end but every second more, and peck less, was a win for Galton the Great Toad Hunter.

Before Galton's toad hunting days were put to an end by the health inspector incident, dodging the goose was half the fun of toad hunting. All the joy the slippery friends brought with some danger sprinkled on top. And so the nimble child, and the big goose would do battle, toads between and below jumping for cover.

There was nothing more annoying about adventuring around the grounds of Hogwarts then the rain. Piddle paddle, down it came, bearing much discomfort and dismay to Galton and his adventuring party. This party namely being Toad, his hairless (by his own making) cat companion.

The brisk rain would shake Toad to her core, and cause the naked feline to retreat towards cover with great haste. Sometimes this was a nearby tree, sometimes under Galton's robes, and sometime it was a sprint back to the castle with a worried boy in tow. The adventure would be ended, or paused, as the two sought their dry respite. And Galton did not like pausing his adventures.

Umbrellas must have been the key to this issue, those stopped rain. Galton could carry two umbrellas to try to shield the two of them, but Toad liked to move fast, and it was tricky for him to keep the umbrella over Toad's head while managing his own. Taking only an umbrella for Toad was also not an option. It was, but it had resulted in a rather nasty cold for Galton. Even with a rain jacket the boy had managed to get soaked enough to catch a nice sniffle and cough. And so the answer would have to be magic in nature, of course.

Pluvia Velo - the Umbrella spell, would suit Galton's situation perfectly. But, he had to get it to cover both of them at the same time. He needed to create two umbrellas. One for him, and one for Toad. He would not be bound by the hinderance of muggle technology any longer. And so Galton began to practice.

Every rain, Galton would be outside, desperately trying all he could to conjure up a second umbrella. He found a nice rock, about Toad shaped, that he would sit next to and cast. Over and over. More would follow the boy. A stuffed or runny nose became the new normal, long gone were the days of clear sinuses. But he stuck to it. It was essential for the adventures. So essential Galton even braved the library for it.

The pursuit for double umbrellas did not stop when the rain was gone and snow had come. Galton would practice in the showers. Sitting below the warm waters with a wand, quietly muttering to himself and a stand-in shampoo bottle toad. Trying and trying to split the umbrella like mitosis.

Fall, winter, and spring had come and gone, but finally there would be two umbrellas for a pair of brave adventurers.

Catching Toad was not easy. She was a wild, slippery, shaved feline with an attitude. She liked to mock hunt the boy as play, a daily ritual of recreation for her. Otherwise, when she wanted to be pet or held, she made it clear, but anytime else, it became a wild Toad chase if one needed to apprehend her. And there were many times that catching an uncooperative Toad was needed.

Shavings, grooming, and dressing were all fun times for Galton. Shaving was a must, but it required quite a bit of tack and pain endurance. Toad was not going to give in once she was cornered, no, escape was very much her goal before Galton's grubby hands took hold. Claws and teeth awaited poor Galton.

The first few months were terrible, like a worse version of the goose. Where there had been bruises there were scratches, and they were a lot less fun. Swat after swat, Galton would fail to nab the cat, only finding a sharp claw as a reminder that she was not in the mood to be picked up. With enough tries, Toad could be quelled. Galton would slowly need to learn to adapt, the goose had only been a warm up.

Whether Galton had been the one to start the chase, or Toad had, Galton needed to be a step ahead of the onslaught. A wiggle of the butt when Toad was lying was a good sign that it was time to go from relaxation to play. When she was cornered the sign came from her front shoulder blades, the higher elevated side pointed to an incoming paw from that side. Slowly he would learn.

There was also bonus practice to be had elsewhere. In the right head space or not, Galton had gotten quite familiar with the spell flipendo which had sent him on a few nice trips through the air in the past year. Great practice on what to expect from a cat's paw. Soon Toad would have no power over him.

The ever present danger of a cat, or students all too willing to send a classmate flying, seemed like reason enough for Galton to be ever ready for the next thing. Yes, he could not always avoid a sneak attack. Toes seemed to be a common casualty to bedtime ambushes, but Toad had not had a taste of his arm in weeks.
