Name of Ability or Race that you Are Applying for: metamorphmagus

Describe why this fits your character (not why you the player want it):
Reducio

Demetra Winchester was born into a family of purebloods who weren’t as well known as the sacred 28 pureblood families. The Winchesters had came from old blood, and most possessed the metamorphmagus trait. However, this trait was only insured because for long years, the family had only wed metamorphmagus to metamorphmagus. But, with the pool of available shifters running out, as did the ability to wed more power into their family line. Slowly, ever so slowly, the Winchesters began to marry normal purebloods. With this, the powerhouse of endless metamorphmagi began to decrease, until it became common for only one person in a generation to have the esteemed ability to change their appearance.

In pureblood society being from a little well off family meant scorn socially, but the girl was prized for being a metamorphmagus. Prized like a breeding animal for the genes and the possibility that her descendants would also have the shape shifting ability, Demetra was married into the cruel Fawley family with a large dowry and a promise of her family gaining money and popularity again. The light spirited woman was quickly ruined by the coldness of the Fawley family, and spent her days in silent horror. As the grow older, the weathered Fawley woman gave birth to a son of her own, Lucas Fawley.

To the horror of the Fawley family who had gambled so much on marrying a lower class pureblood, Luca was born without a trace of the prized ability. He was woefully ordinary, or at least as ordinary as a pureblood wizard with a large legacy to inherit could be. Luca was kind spirited, another annoying trait that he had gotten from Demetera. After his birth, the metamorphmagus was left to her own devices, essentially shoved away from the limelight of the celebrated pureblood lifestyle that had been promised to her.

That was until Luca went missing. Without her beloved son, Demetera’s metamorphmagus traits began to shine again, and the world was reminded of why she had been married to Adrian Fawley in the first place. She aged ten years overnight, a withered woman in her grief. But, nobody cared about her grief. Instead, they pushed the woman to try and get with child again. Demetera was long past her prime and could not have a child, but little did the people of the wizarding world know… another child with her same genes had just been born in a sleepy flat in the slums of London.

It wasn’t obvious at first that Eris was different from her sister. The two both had the smallest little tufts of dark brown hair when they were born, already the little tufts sticking upright from their sweat. But, while their mother was resting from the birth, the alarmed mutterings of the doctor woke Jane up. Where there had once been dark brown hair, Eris now sprouted a full head of bright ginger hair.

Jane Rowle freaked out, and as her daughter’s hair shifted between orange and brown, the woman worked feverishly to find a potion that blocked out the effects of her ability. And thus, Eris spent most of her childhood guzzling down potions and being unaware of her true abilities. On the rare occasion that her mother forgot to feed her a potion, Eris always chalked up the way her eyes or hair changed colour to the lightning in the room being strange.

That was until her 11th birthday, when Eris ran away from home. After a few weeks, she found herself in Hogwarts, violently ill. As the effects of the potion dissipated, Eris found her hair sporadically changing colours. The girl then realized that there was more to her than met the eye, even in the wizarding world. With this in mind, Eris reached out to her Fawley side of the family and eventually met Demetra Winchester, who agreed to train the current Fawley heir in her abilities.

Instead if staying for summer camp like most students, Aurelia was sent to the Netherlands to stay over at one of her Grandmother’s log-cabin to keep the 68 year old company for the month of July. Although she has aged well, Astrehilde Ruthevos, a retired auror who had spent her youth working for Ministry of Magic under the department of races, picked up the hobby of Monster Hunting. A strange woman many think of her to be.

About half an hour’s hike from the cabins, deep in the density of trees, was a small remote wizarding village called Autijdorp (one similar to Hogsmaede). With a population of only 195, Aurijdorp, was regarded as insignificant and was little of a concern to the Dutch Ministry of Magic. Many peculiars, those non-human would find refuge in this small but amicable village, free from prejudice and discrimination. However, very so often, Monsters would seek to take advantage of the villagers. There, Astrehilde went about at night as a protector of the village by defending it from those with devious intentions, most often Hags, rogue vampires and savage werewolves with the skills of an Auror.

So When her Granddaughter had came to stay, Astrehilde was determined to make Monster Hunting become a legacy by passing the skills on to the adopted Bezuidenhout child. So she began her tutoring, teaching her on the different species, down to the smallest of details and went so far as taking the thirteen year old to watch a mass werewolf transformation during a full moon.

At first, when Astrehilde had theoretically introduced Aurelia to the art of Monster Hunting,  had she thought her Grandmother was ludicrous. It was not until Astrehilde took Aurelia down the village to get a first hand view of the peculiar creatures had the girl finally believed her. Through the weeks, she and Astrehilde hiked up to the village and down again dozens of times for the once naive girl to learn about all sorts of the human-like creatures. And  so, Aurelia’s journey to becoming a Monster Hunter had began.
Child, we do live among these creatures. They are what we can be and at the same time, what we cannot. Like us humans, not all of them are bad, not all are good. But if they become monsters who threaten peace, they shall be rid off.” - Astrehilde to Aurelia.
Aurelia’s motives are fairly simple: protect the school from the threats the peculiars pose and at the same time, help the peculiars learn not to become monsters themselves.  At thirteen years old, the novice hunter is aware that she is no where near the level of killing monsters so she would only identify the peculiars in the school and keep a close eye on them. She does, however, keep a slim crystal perfume bottle of garlic juice within reach at all times in case she were to encounter a blood thirsty vampire and little pieces of meat to lure out (human) werewolves stored in what-she-calls her go-to Hunting Purse.

Name of Ability or Race that you Are Applying for:
Year 1: Prodigal Charms Learner
Reducio
Everyone knows that wizards aren't supposed to do magic until they're adults. Those are the rules -- but magic can be taught without picking up a wand. From the moment he could understand them, Adam's parents started to introduce their son to the spells that would help him navigate the wizarding world. His father would wave his wand slower than usual, making sure that he was picking up on every dip and curve. His mother would draw out the syllables of each incantation, watching to see Adam's excited face as magic carried a stray hat or coat across the room. While they were doing the same work, however, his parents' castings were undoubtedly different. By the time he was eight, Adam was spending more and more time learning from his mother.

He wasn't sure why he made the choice, but he knew it felt right. His mother's voice was soft and soothing, compared to his father's commanding tone. Her movements were fluid and precise, while his were quicker and rougher. She used her wand like it was a paintbrush; he used his like a weapon. Later, Adam would realize that he hadn't exactly picked the teacher, but rather the material. His father's sergeant-like magic would prepare him duels -- his mum would teach him charms.

Young Adam liked the more subtle nature of a charm, and he loved listening to his mother explain each one. She quickly noticed his heightened interest, and started to dedicate weekends to their lessons. While he still saw plenty of spellwork in action around the house, Adam started to learn about the intricacies of casting a charm for a few hours every Sunday. He was taught the importance of focus, grace, and precision. On his ninth birthday, Adam's mother bought him a pocket-sized notebook and his own quill set; every time they went over a particularly interesting spell, he'd scratch it down on the lines of the paper, reading it over to himself a dozen times a day. He was still learning plenty from his father and his school-age brother, but it was clear where Adam's heart lied.

There was still a level of caution to be maintained, however. For fear of breaking the Statute of Secrecy, Adam's mother never let him hold a wand while they were studying. He practiced the movements with twigs from outside -- one time even with a spoon, when no sticks could be found. He wasn't allowed to speak any incantations in full, just in case something went wrong -- "accidents happen," his mum would remind him, and he guessed she was right. As he got older, Adam started to think he had learned all he could from home. There were only so many times he could go over a semi-incantation, only so many splinters he could get from his makeshift wands. The lessons stopped shortly after his tenth birthday, but his fondness for charms lasted all the way through the door of Professor Blackburn's classroom his first year.

Charms, both as a class and a spell, is a strong connection to Adam's family, a bridge between Hogwarts and his Nottingham home. It helps make his time away from his parents a little less scary, and it's the only class so far that Adam has truly loved. Lessons, lectures, and even homework aren't quite so tedious when he thinks of his mother, who sat in the very same classroom when she was a kid. Though his notebook has since been abandoned, Adam still likes to scan the textbooks from time to time, adding the most unique charms to a mental checklist. Adam finds it easier to focus and dedicate himself to charms, and hopes that maybe he can teach his mum something new when he comes home on break. Maybe he'll even follow the same road as she did, through OWLs and NEWTs, and teach his own kids something special before their Sorting.

Year 2: Calming Presence
Reducio
The world is a scary place, and Adam knows it. It didn't take him all that long to find out -- in fact, one year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry did it. Though the school had certainly seen worse before, the students in Adam's first year found themselves plagued by a terrifying Masked Man with mysterious intentions. The terror reached a peak when the villain was revealed to be a fellow student, a fellow Ravenclaw even, and a former prefect. As if that wasn't enough to make half of the student body race for the train, their BlossomBall had gone up in flames and all of Hufflepuff had been traumatized. Starting a new school -- a new life, really -- would have been intimidating normally; combined with everything else, it was downright terrifying.

All of the damage done might have had some benefit, however. At the end of the year, it felt like Adam and his friends were changed. Reforged in the fire, you might say. While a few had come out fiercer and bolder, Adam had gotten a new purpose. It gave his prefect job a new importance, something that had been missing before. While Adam had always been a friendly person, he had never really given it a second thought. It felt nice to be nice -- that was that. Going into second year, though, he saw how he could help and what he could do. A kind word or a helping hand could mean a lot to someone in need. At school, he would try his hardest to keep his classmates going. As a prefect, he could help the first years get adjusted to their new environment, making sure they weren't too overwhelmed. As a student, he could...well, he couldn't do much, but he was going to try his hardest. Adam was happy when other people were happy. If he could make Hogwarts a little happier, in whatever way possible, it'd be all the better.

His new philosophy was put to the test in the August before his second year, when Adam's father was caught in a romantic affair and subsequently kicked out of the Harringtom house. The truth jarred the remaining family members, sending Adam's brother into a dismissive anger and his mother into a race to restore her household. It was up to Adam to look on the bright side and try to reassure his mum that everything would be okay. It didn't feel very helpful, but it was a reminder of just how much the world needed a silver lining. Without one, you just got lost in darkness.

As he returns to Hogwarts, Adam wants to make sure no one feels overwhelmed or alone. He can't help everyone, but he can certainly try, and he can definitely offer some relief to those closest to him. No matter what else the Masked Man might throw at them, or what might burst into flame, or how much Transfiguration homework might be given, Adam is going to be as helpful and calming as he can be. Otherwise, what kind of a friend is he?

Year 3: Spell Spread
Reducio
By third year, the friendly competition that had built up so much of Adam's life had started to turn into a more dangerous thing. He could feel himself getting more pulled into the challenge, the desire to win building up in him even at the silliest things. Getting to dinner was a race, grades were a contest, even spellwork was getting competitive. It might have just been the fact that he was a teenage boy -- but he personally chose to blame it on his brother.

Not everything, of course, could be pinned on Dean Harringtom. Adam had always been an inherently competitive person, and it was bound to get out of his control at one time or another. The magic part, though, that was all Dean. Adam's brother had been the role model for as long as he could remember. He was cool, he was collected, he was decently smart, and he was really good at magic. They'd grown up with the same experience, and learned at the same schools, but Dean was always just better at it than Adam was. It was infuriating to be beaten at yet another thing, He didn't mind it so much the first year; then a little bit more in second year, as he got older; then, weeks before the start of third year, his brother dropped the ball. It should've been a great moment for Adam, who would finally get to be the good child. And yet it wasn't.

Dean's plan was to leave them behind, to strike out on his own and not look back. All that time at Hogwarts, learning spells and mastering charms, meant nothing to him, apparently. All that effortless success he built up was going to be thrown back into the wind, forgotten. It took all that Adam had not to yell at him on the spot. Was he kidding? Was this a joke? Did he know how hard Adam had been planning to work, had always worked, to maybe live up to his brother? And now the golden boy wanted to, what, retire? Adam was furious. He wouldn't talk to his brother for the rest of the day, and at night, when he couldn't get to sleep, an idea came to him.

This was his chance to be better -- it hadn't been ruined. If he was the last man in the house then he was going to be a damn good one, because clearly no one else had thought to do so. Hogwarts was his dojo now, per se, and he was going to train even harder than ever to be the best wizard he could be. He was going to be strong. Forceful. Confident. He couldn't practice much magic over the summer, but he went back to his old practice of reading incantations and flicking sticks around. His movements had become broader and more powerful as he put more feelings behind his casting. His words were louder, more commanding, like his father's had been. They were backed by emotions that he wasn't tempering like he had in first or second year. Emotions were powerful things, right? They could give a spell plenty of strength. Why should he be keeping them down?

He knew he was sacrificing accuracy for power, focus for feeling, but that's what his brother had always done, and he'd turned out great -- well, up until the end. When he could lose himself in the swing of the wand, it was all the reward he was looking for. Adam was careful to remind himself of who he was -- he couldn't get too angry, or he'd just turn into the person he was trying to rise above. He knew it was a lot of dramatics for a thirteen-year-old. But if he had magic, why not use the magic? It was his distraction now, his escape from the things he couldn't fix with magic. He'd be good at this. He'd be able to impress his friends and his mum, and maybe still do some good. Some weird stuff had happened last year. Wouldn't it be better if he could fire off a powerful Disarming Charm above, say, a precise Mending Charm? Most definitely.

This was a fun type of magic, the magic that was meant for him. This was grand, sweeping, carefree magic. This was magic fueled by strong emotion. It was going to redefine him.

Describe why this fits your character (not why you the player want it): It all started out of admiration for his Mother. She was a long time chaser for the national Japanese quidditch team, and Olivers hero. Ever since he could remember Quidditch was all he wanted to do because of her. He lived for the thrill soaring high above the ground leading his team to victory in the trenches.

The first time Oliver managed to sneak off with a broom to the country side at his grandfathers, he thought it would be a brilliant idea to weave through the trees. With his active imagination going he pretended each tree would be a chaser going for a tackle.

With zero hesitation he zipped forward nearly hitting the first tree. Leaning a little too far to the right, he got sent into a tail spin and crashed into another tree. Relieved he didn’t snap the broom, he ignored the pain in his right shoulder, and tried again. Oliver would be at it for hours barely getting past three trees successfully.

“What’s your secret mom, what makes a good chaser?” Oliver asked when breakfast. “ you gotta be nimble, like a cat!” She said with a smile, “Beaters hate it when they can’t hit you.” And thats when a light bulb went off above Olivers head. He was already skinny, and played his fair share of muggle dodge ball. How different could it be?

Living in a wizarding community, it wasn’t hard to find other boys to practice with. The Nguyen twins had a whole Quidditch set, and a strange obsession with bludger violence. So it didn’t come as a surprise that the two were more then thrilled when Oliver requested them to take aim at him. The first day was hell, but he somehow surprised himself.

For a whole summer Oliver and the twins would be at it. Over time it was almost as if Oliver started to pick up a sixth sense for the Bludgers aimed at him. The ones coming head on stood no chance, he had practiced enough in the woods now to time dodging things in front of him. The ones coming from behind him were still tricky, but he started to pick up on little things that would help. He could swear if he focused enough he could hear them making a slight buzz as they neared. Although the wasn’t exactly fool proof he learned if he just keeps twisting his body, and moving constantly they would miss most of the time.

Magical Genes

Janus knew only one side of his family tree was magical. His mother was so non-magical that she became nervous at the tiniest sign of a spell, making him live as a muggle until he'd left for Hogwarts. His father (a wizard) had enforced his wife's rule and Janus had followed it, thinking that if his mother was worried around magic it was just because she didn't understand it and was afraid that he'd hurt himself. That was in fact what his mother thought, herself.
Janus knew there was only one magical side of his family, but that was not the truth.

Unknown to him, to his father and most importantly to his mother, Mrs. Lumley's parents had both been wizardkind. They had chosen to take a side during the First Wizarding War and had tried to protect neighbouring muggles from the Death Eaters. Olivia had been born in '76, in the middle of the war, and had made her parents more cautious but didn't stray them from their choice. They tried to give her a happy childhood during those tense times, making her play with their magic tricks, but all of that was cut short in the last days of August '81, when Olivia was five. Death Eaters attacked their town targeting muggles, and her parents hid as many as they could in their home. They then told Olivia to hide in the cupboard. When the Death Eaters came to their house, pleasantly questioning the two wizards, they didn't take long to discover that there were muggles hidden upstairs. Olivia's parents had hurriedly placed an anti-detection charm when hiding them but it wasn't enough to trick the Death Eaters. As soon as one of the dark wizards moved to go upstairs, her father blocked his way and drew his wand. All the while Olivia was peeking at the scene through the cupboard door's crack, protected by the shadows and some very heavy spellwork that her parents had placed on that cupboard for that exact reason. She saw the masked man shout, her father shout, green light from a wand, her father fall, her mother scream. Her mother kneeling beside her father and then pointing her wand at the masked men, who were laughing. Another green light and her mother fell as well. Dread kept her silent while the masked men climbed up the steps towards the muggles, then there were shouts from outside and she saw the men climb back down and exit the house in a hurry. The shouts she had heard were Aurors and OotP members arriving at the scene and engaging the Death Eaters. They managed to win that fight, and when they later found her crying beside her dead parents they brought her back with them to the Ministry. Once there, it was briskly decided that being 5 and having shown no sign of magic yet, and most importantly having suffered a very traumatic event, she was to be Obliviated of any magical event in her life and have her memory modified to having been in a car accident with her parents, when they had died. She was then to be given in adoption to a muggle couple in a safe area, and whenever her magic would surface they would give her the choice to have her memories restored. If she turned out to be a squib, well, not remembering her terrible past would make her life better as a muggle. The Aurors who had found her felt uncomfortable at having to Obliviate her but they complied, and she was given in adoption to a lovely couple that lived in Durham, the Cobbs. These were the people Janus would come to know as "grandparents". They'd been on the adoption list for a while now and they were overjoyed at finally being able to adopt a child. They were told Olivia's parents had died in a car crash and that she'd been traumatised by the event so she didn't remember much. They immediately thought of her as their daughter and raised her to the best they could. Olivia did surpringly turn out to be a squib so her memories weren't restored and she had a satisfyingly normal life. When Rufus Lumley told her that he was a wizard, some days after their engagement, she felt a spike of dread resurface from an unknown place inside her, but she put it down to having just learned that magic was real. Rufus told her that he wanted to live as a muggle, anyway, and she immediately felt relieved. She was also relieved when her daughter didn't show any signs of magic even at 11, but when Janus magically set a wasp on fire at 7 she felt a pang of nervousness come back.
In the last few years before he left for Hogwarts she never felt at ease when her husband or son mentioned magic, and her nightmares were bathed in green light.

Mr. Lumley, on the contrary, knew everything and more about his pureblood lineage. The only person in his family who didn't place any importance on it was his crazy aunt Tilla, who claimed to be a Seer, but as for the rest of them, they'd stuffed his ears with family trees since he was just a child. Going to Hogwarts had been a welcome escape from his overbearing family. His father had died in a risky duel when he was only 2, but besides that he'd been a pretty average and content child. While at Hogwarts he had a quiet few years in Hufflepuff, apart from that whole Chamber of Secrets deal in his Sixth year. He then graduated with a decent academic average but he felt a pull towards experiencing the muggle life, something he could have never tried before. He didn't have any other ideas for his future and he'd never been the ambitious sort, always choosing to go where his fate would lead him. He heard news of Voldemort's second rise from his new muggle accomodation in Durham, and managed to keep a low profile until the dark wizard's definitive fall. His mother died of illness shortly after but she had cut ties with him long before that, when he'd gone to live as a muggle.

Flashes of Luck

Janus had always felt he was lucky, and most of his muggle mates agreed with him. He often got good grades in tests even if he didn't study much, and that was why he felt lucky, and he managed to find himself in the right place when something went wrong, and that was why others called him lucky. For example, if someone hit a football too hard and it swerved towards him and his friends, you could bet he wouldn't be the one getting hit. If an adult came to them with an infuriated face on, Janus had often just left or was leaving. He didn't think much about it though; he simply thought that since he understood how those situations worked he obviously knew how they were going to develop. After all anyone could, they were quite predictable; then yeah, he also had luck. One event he couldn't predict was when he was told that he was a wizard, but it fit into his lucky narrative. Another thing he couldn't have predicted was that he was in fact a Seer, but he didn't know that yet.

METAMORPHMAGUS
Link to your encyclopedia thread: here
Name of Ability or Race that you Are Applying for: metamorphmagus
Why this fits Sonatine:
Sonatine had absolutely no knowledge of the magical world. She had grown up in an environment that rejected all forms of witchcraft, or anything that didn't conform to muggle 'logic'. Her ignorance towards magic and its existence made her even more surprised to find out that she in fact was a part of an entire magical race that ran through her mothers' family: the metamorphmagus.

Her great-grandmother, Yu-ri Choi, inherited the gene which had been kept in the Choi family for hundreds of years. She was a skilled transfigurator and took pride in her rare ability. However, with her new child, Chae-rin, the family had moved to Seoul, the capital where the cost of living was lower. Chae-rin had been born out of wedlock, and with the social exclusion and shame, Chae-rin and Yu-ri left their beautiful manor house by the sea and to the crowded city of Seoul.

The Metamorphagus gene was still in the Choi family, though. Chae-rin later had Sonatines' mother, Chaeyeon. Living almost in poverty, Chae-rin had lost all of the Choi inheritance - the money, a place in the family house, even the acknowledgement of being in a prestigious wizarding family. As a result, Chae-rin urged Chaeyeon to marry in order to survive, and to maybe, just maybe, be able to revive the Choi family in her once again.

Chaeyeon struck gold. A couple years after Chae-rin had passed, Chaeyeon had married a English muggle, one that owned many companies and had an extremely high social standing within the business world. She had fallen in love with Eric Webbs - someone who she could depend on and saw as a partner forever. The two lived in luxury, and in the public eye, a life of flashy dresses and high dining. Yet her love came at a price; Chaeyeon, as instructed by her mother, made every attempt to hide any form of magic that she knew. This meant hiding her abilities as a Metamorphmagus: reverting any spontaneous changes to their usual state, like having to wear a hat in case her hair became a shocking shade of pink. As she grew older however, from years of hiding her skill, she was able to pass as a normal human muggle.

This didn't last long. Many years after she was born, Sonatine still showed no signs of having the Metamorphmagus gene, much to Chaeyeon’s delight. This meant that they could live a normal life – like her faamous muggle friends. However, when Sonatine began to show signs of accidental shifting, Chaeyeon couldn’t believe it. Some days, her eyes would switch from its normal brown to vivid lilac. Other days, her eyelashes or fingernails would appear longer. One fateful day came, when Chaeyeon saw Sonatine in her room with the brightest purple hair she had ever seen, she felt her heart stop. Years of disregarding magic had made Chaeyeon wary of acknowledging these abilities, and thus in a fit of fury, she sent Sonatine away to somewhere she felt was safer, somewhere other than with her.

As Sonatine came to London, she knew that there would be more people like her – people of magical blood, who wouldn’t judge her or think she was weird. Even though she was surrounded by other witches and wizards, Sonatine didn’t flaunt her ability. She kept to changing small features, mostly the colour of her hair, to practice the skill she had inherited in the privacy of her room.

Giving this ability to Sonatine would mean she would be able to practice her metamorphmagy in an environment that is safer than the one she once knew. The identity of being a Metamorphmagus may even help her to reconnect with her mother. But for now, she’ll practice the trait she has until she’s ready.

Piper Bancroft | First Year | Hufflepuff
Name of Ability or Race that you Are Applying for:
Seer
Describe why this fits your character (not why you the player want it):
[705 words]
Piper knows very little about her background. She's never known her father, and her mother is estranged from her family, so her familial history is largely a mystery. As a result, the same, as one could probably guess, can be said for her magical background. Once the blood types were explained to her, she accepted rather easily that she was a muggle-born. After all, her mother clearly housed no magical talent. Nor did her older brother, and given that the parent they had in common was their mother, Piper found it safe to assume the magic wasn't being passed down through her. While she has much less concrete information about her father, she finds it doubtful that her mother wouldn't have seen or sensed something about him to indicate that he was magical, given how obvious it became in Piper as she aged. When her mother said she didn't remember anything off about her father, Piper took her word as law, and didn't question it any further. The simple answer was that she was one of those anomalies, a witch born to non-magical parents, and so that was the answer Piper accepted.

The truth, however, is much the opposite.

While it's true that there's no magic in the immediate family on her mother's side, they do have magic in their heritage, and interestingly, it has almost exclusively manifested itself in the women of the family. It's unclear just which ancestor brought magic into the Bancroft bloodline, but it has existed for a few centuries at least. Most of the seers on her mother's side were married into the family (it appears the Bancroft witches have a type), but they then passed on their seer blood onto their children, who passed it onto their children, and so on and so on. Piper is in direct descent of a few of these children, and is also a direct descendant of the only seer-seer pairing in her familial history. That couple, interestingly enough, cut the entirety of the wizarding world, save for their own foreseeing powers, out of their lives. Instead of finding honest work in the wizarding world, they traveled the muggle world, using their enhanced divination abilities to operate a fortune-telling caravan. They aren't spoken about much, neither by their muggle descendants (who consider them no-good layabouts) nor their magic descendants (who frown upon their misuse of their abilities).

Even more important, her father, despite Piper's beliefs otherwise, did come from a magical background. However, despite having magic blood and passing it onto her, he himself was a squib, and had no magical abilities. And not only was her father a squib born from a long line of magical men and women, but he was a squib from a family line that was peppered with seers. More often than not, their enhanced divination abilities manifested in little more than a particularly strong intuition. However, every few generations, a genuine seer was born into his family line. Unlike with the seers in her mother's family, the seers on Piper's paternal side kept very tight-lipped about their abilities, and many even tried their hardest not to acknowledge them. After all, being able to see the (potential) future wasn't always a gift. Sometimes, they were blighted with visions of tragedy and destruction, and sometimes, those visions were of such a magnitude that they didn't have a hope of fixing it. It was easier, then, to pretend that no such visions existed, rather than to deal with the guilt and unwanted responsibility of "doing all they could." Why bother, when their efforts would be for naught anyway?

And at the end of these two family trees, there's Piper.

Piper, who has always had a keen intuition, always had a knack for getting herself out of scraps unhurt and knowing which risks weren't worth taking. Piper, who has an endless imagination and the sharpest dreams, dreams so vivid and tangible she'd almost swear they're real. Piper, who knew, at the very core of her being, that she wasn't like her mother or her brother, and knew it long before her magic began to manifest.

Adrian had always wanted to be a creature researcher. There were still thousands of things, millions even, that they don't know about magical creatures. Why can Threstals only be seen by those who've witness death? Are nargles real? Why does a basilisk's gaze kill? Do dragons understand parseltongue? There's a lot of questions she has in her mind, some may seem stupid but nevertheless, she wants to know. She wants to know the whys, the hows, the whens, the whats. She wants to know everything there is to know about them, she wants to learn by herself, what would it feel like? To run your hand through a threstal's mane? Becoming a creature researcher, it's her goal, her dream, her passion.

In the end, a goal is just a goal, and a dream is only a dream. It means nothing to have a goal or a dream if you don't even work for it. And work she did. One day while she was skimming through books in her family manor's library, she had came across a book about magical languages. She was enthralled. It was just so fascinating. Once she opened the book, she couldn't stop. She didn't stop until she was finished.

That wasn't enough to satisfy her though, of course it wasn't, it was only an introduction, information pertaining existing magical languages that can be learnt. It didn't actually had the language written in it. It was just some basic information, though interesting, didn't help to satiate her curiosity. But the book had references to other books containing the knowledge she seek and that was more than enough.

So, she hunted down for those books, she read and read, reading from cover to cover. At first she had debated which magical language to learn, as it took quite a while to completely master the language, she didn't want to accidentally insult someone while speaking mermish, or embarrass herself in front of a veela. In the end she chose to first learn and master mermish, she was leaning towards gobbledegook in the beginning as it was quite useful while doing business in Gringotts, but it wouldn't exactly help with her dream. She hardly think that goblins would want to be researched. She would rarely encounter a giant or a troll anyways, as well as veelas. Mermaids on the other hand, she had heard stories about mermaids in the Great Lake, and the merfolk in the lake situated in the middle of the forest behind her family manor were quite friendly. There were ample opportunities for her to practice mermish while growing up!

That's why she chose to learn mermish, but that didn't mean she would neglect the other creatures of course, while she hadn't learnt their languages, she had learnt their customs and traditions.

Name of Ability or Race that you Are Applying for: Part-Veela
Describe why this fits your character: (WC 566)
Reducio
Mid-1900's, an adventurer by the name of Aengus was travelling in Eastern Europe. During his travels, he was bewitched by a Veela and had two children with her - Eoghan and Eithne (½ Veela). They never got to know their parents. Aengus sent them to Ireland to be in the care of his sister Séarlait, using the Veela’s beauty as his excuse for not being able to go with them. Thus, Eoghan and Eithne were raised in what was once a castle in Malahide, Ireland.

Eithne (½ Veela) had a rough go of it, becoming harpy-like or spouting fire when angry. Her upbringing was disciplined, every move scheduled, unlike her brother who was able to choose his hobbies and roam the grounds freely. Feeling like a prisoner in her own home, she was ecstatic when her Hogwarts letter arrived. She and Eoghan were both sorted into Slytherin, where she spent her days researching anything to do with being a Veela - something that her aunt would never discuss, calling her an abomination instead (likely jealous of her beauty and disgusted by her own brother for having children with a Veela). During her research, she was able to find out more about the Tabolt family ancestry and how they came to hold status and power in Ireland over the decades.

There was no way to know for sure but she believed that her father had likely been killed by an unknown Veela, her mother. His whereabouts unknown into Eithne’s adulthood, her father is believed to be dead.

Despite Eithne being marginalized herself, Séarlait’s influence over the years and the incident in November of 1981 in which her brother Eoghan was murdered in London due to hanging out with Muggles, Eithne held a hatred for them in her heart. During a dangerous time in the Wizarding world, she grew cold and harsh, deciding to aid a cause that she truly believed in - Voldemort’s. Not long after she joined the Death Eaters, Lord Voldemort went into hiding, or so she preferred to believe, continuing to support the cause in secret.

She would go on to marry a jovial man by the name of Fergus Sloane. He fell for her charm and didn’t get spooked when she was angry, but Fergus and the rest of his family were of use to her, their open support for the Order throughout the years helping aid her own cause. She was using her husband for his own influence and more importantly for her own protection. By marrying him, she got to play happy family and move out of the prison-like castle that she grew up in, building her own mansion style home and eventually having a child of her own in 1975 - Orlagh (¼ Veela).

Orlagh was exceptionally bright and made up for her mother’s seemingly snooty nature with her own kindness. Her childhood wasn’t as restrictive as her mother’s but she did have a tutor before Hogwarts. Before Hogwarts, her hobbies included gardening, reading and cooking. It would come as no surprise that in her later school years, she would obtain O’s in her N.E.W.T.s and begin a career as a Healer. She would go on to marry her childhood/Hogwarts sweetheart named Conn who chose a career as a Historian and Curator. Despite many failed attempts and a miscarriage, they were able to have a daughter, Dymphna (⅛ Veela) in 2006.

Name of Ability or Race that you Are Applying for: The Muggle Condition
Describe why this fits your character:
Even as a child born to a witch, Asteria never had contact with the wizarding world. Her mother left when she was young child and her father was left unsure; he had no real contacts in the world of magic, and his ex-wife's family were dark wizards - not the type of people to want contact with a half-blood child. So Asteria was raised in ignorance of magic, used to clambering up trees in city parks, prone to settling her playground squabbles with her fists and feet, and excited to run around streets with a stick, pretending it was a sword.

Her childhood was half-wild playground warfare, counteracted by her father's calm admonitions. As for her father, he taught her to think - how to tinker with mechanics, how to build her own toys from scratch, how to make something, anything with her own two hands, and the value of that. So she grew up knowing that the best things were gained with her own two hands, whether it was a victory won or a fairy house built in the roots of a tree.

Now, here at Hogwarts, she faces fear. Fear of her magic, fear of her need for control, fear of the family she never knew, still an ocean away.  And the only way in sight to temper this fear, from the perspective of a misguided, scared young girl, is to just not engage with her magic - if you need to do something in a non-magical way, she's your girl. It's deflection in its most pure form. Magic requires control, control that she feels she lacks, that she knows that she lacks every time the the angry beast made of fire and betrayal raises its head within her chest. So she turns to the only form of control she knows - that which she can do with her hands. There's less baggage there, less unknowns. It's a tried and true skill, the kind of thing that one can turn to in desperate times. Fists can't lie to you, can't reveal uncomfortable truths about you, can't channel unknown quantities of magic that you never knew you had.

As she paces the halls of Hogwarts, falling into the steady rhythm of students moving to and fro from their classes, the small girl wrings her hands, watching others discuss the content of their classes, idly casting spells and trading casual words. Someday I'll be like that, the girl thinks, but I'll have to build that road brick by brick.
