History/Background Story:
Muriel (who prefers to go by Merle) was born to muggle parents in the small village of Finchingfield, Braintree, England. Her parents are both Irish, her dad being from Belfast, Northern Ireland, and her mother the daughter of Irish immigrants in Boston, Massachusetts. Her mother is a teacher at the local primary school and her father worked in an office in Braintree. She has a brother a year younger than her named Thomas. The Dunns also have a cat named Flipper.
For most of her life, Merle's magical talents were not particularly noticeable. The first occurrence of her magic featured a ball bouncing off an unseen barrier in front of her, but that could be shrugged off as quick reflexes or the wind. Most other occurrences were easily dismissable in this way. The most notable occasion was when Merle accidentally caused Flipper to float in the air.
Merle spent most of her time running about in the trees surrounding Finchingfield as it was a small village without much to do. Because of this, there may have been many more magical incidents that simply went unnoticed due to there being no witnesses. Merle has long been a believer of magic, though that might be putting it too strong. She certainly believed in some of the local folktales and legends, as well as stories her parents told her of fair folk, but she never expected magic to exist on such a scale as the wizarding world.
When Merle got her Hogwarts letter, she was shocked but surprisingly, her parents weren't terribly surprised. Apparently, there were rumors in the family that Mr. Dunn's second cousin who suddenly began attending a very prestigious and private school may not have been attending an average boarding school.
