Pre-Hogwarts History

Ruby was born in June 2007 to a wizarding family, with all the relatives she knows of being magical. Her family is very well-off after having generations of hard-working, business-minded individuals who accumulated wealth, and Ruby has never known what it is like to want for something material or be unable to afford it. She had a cushy life, having everything she could ever want—well, aside from parents who were consistently there for her. Growing up, she was told that her parents were very busy people who often had to travel for work, and while part of this was true, the other part was that they were caring for Ruby’s older brother, who she only discovered existed in the summer before her second year at Hogwarts.

The reason why she didn’t know that she wasn’t an only child as she had always believed was complicated, and at once quite simple. Her parents couldn’t handle her. She was difficult, always screaming as a baby, and behaving worse than any other infant they had heard of. While her true first instance of magic as a toddler was making a book float over to her when she couldn't reach it, she began to have numerous instances of destructive accidental magic. When it hurt their son (not severely), her parents took action and separated them, taking him to another of their family homes. They had only intended for it to be for a little while, with just enough time to seek help about Ruby’s behavior and give her some time to cool off. However, they soon found that this worked better for them. Things were easier without having to worry about the safety of their son, and Ruby calmed down more. So they kept the two separated and the son hidden, living a bit of a double life for many years.

Ruby was not alone in that time. While her parents may not have been there often, she had various nannies (who she often drove away with her bad behavior). But most important to her development and childhood was the presence of other family members. One of her sets of aunts and uncles offered to take care of Ruby part of the time, and they quickly grew to love their niece deeply, spending a lot of time with her. This also meant that she grew up playing with their three sons—her cousins—who became her best and only real friends as well as like brothers to her.

While Ruby’s parents may have been misguided and often absent, they loved her in their own way and still felt it was important to “do what was best for her”—which, in their opinion, was attempting to shape her according to their views. This included having her attend pureblood social events and otherwise socialize with other pureblooded children, holding her to very high standards so nobody could ever view her as lesser, and omitting certain information from her magical tutoring. This last bit was specifically regarding the house of Slytherin. Her parents (a Ravenclaw and Gryffindor when they were students) were biased against Slytherins, a misguided and outdated view left over from when they attended Hogwarts. They viewed it as especially important for Ruby to not become a Slytherin, as they feared what her bad behavior and outbursts of magic would develop into if she became part of what they viewed as a dark and sinister house.

Being able to put two and two together and reckoning that nothing so evil would exist in a place for children, Ruby sought out the truth to counter what she was being told. She developed a fondness for the house so misunderstood by her family, and found a kinship in it, feeling her traits of ambition and cunning were strong enough to potentially place her in the house. When she did end up in Slytherin, her parents did not contact her for her entire first year until they ordered her to come home for the summer. By then, they had given up on her and trying to change her, and the truth came out about her brother that visit, when she was already attending Hogwarts and they could hide no more.

Personality

Fundamentally, Ruby is driven. The house of ambition and pride suits her well, accomplishing whatever she puts her mind to. She seeks power—and admittedly control after having it removed from her one too many times. Power, while such a loose concept, has always fascinated her—the things people can do when they are focused on a goal, when they understand how to use their abilities to the fullest potential. She has a need to stand out, to be more than just ordinary. She wants to be able to shock people, to impress them, to never have to be vulnerable or hurt and in danger again. This directs her to focus on her studies, a straight-O student with numerous achievements, including being able to hit multiple targets at once (Spell Spread), having spells that never backfire (Perfectionist II), and the ability to perform nonverbal magic.

Beyond just the motivation of power and control, she is also driven to excel academically because of her curiosity. Her thirst for knowledge and desire to understand the things around her is insatiable, sometimes leading her into tricky situations that she would not have found herself in had she been more sensible about appropriate boundaries for information-seeking. The signals that keep most people in check—fear, a healthy sense of staying away from danger when it is detected—are not always present for the Slytherin, who often finds adrenaline thrilling and encouraging. While she may not always make the right choice to keep herself and others safe, she tends to be pretty analytical and clever, although that lends itself to book-smarts and a tendency to gain understanding of people themselves rather than the sensibility to make the “smart” decisions in a moment of danger.

Jaded by the world’s problems and the suffering at Hogwarts, Ruby has grown increasingly cold and cynical over her time at the school. There is pain inside her that she doesn’t know how to cope with, leading her to become violent and angry in her second and third year, directing her pain outwards. Her fourth year was marked by total self-isolation, the pain now reflected inwards, and her fifth year sees her uncertain, a balancing act between the possibility of turning her behavior around or slipping back into the pit of violence and darkness she knows she should seek to stray from. Aloofness remains, a cold wariness and distance placed between herself and everyone she interacts with while she debates who she is and who she wants to be.

First Year
Reducio
So the girl thinks she’s untouchable does she, she thinks that she can use people, make them trust her and confide nothing of herself to them. […] She’s Ruby, a queen amongst all, a queen with a cold heart and a selfish mind.
(Cleo Cabello in The First Encounterance)

The too pretty lines of her face screamed about winning a beauty competition rather than participating in extracurricular discussions about the essence of Transfiguration. But her eyes were different. Her look could probably hold antimatter in a nutshell. She could probably scare away a dementor. There was just too much power inside that small slick 11- or 12-year-old. And at the same moment, Meenauh felt the girl was doing the same to her — analysing. This was ridiculously funny as she has never met a potential equal.

The girl's voice sounded steady as if she wasn't a first-, second-, or actually not of any year. She was either a very grown-up person in the body of a child, or another aristocratic pure-blood with the educated poker face since early childhood. The condescending tone made her suddenly flinch as that was the first conversation of that kind with probably a really intelligent person.

Her voice and her timbre were soft and inquiring. Not the softness of the undetermined and lacking self-insurance, but the softness of maturity. The girl was self-confident and she sounded like she didn't need to prove anything to anyone. There were only her and the knowledge of the world, expecting to be absorbed by the brightest minds.
(Meenauh Silmataurea in Magic vs Science)

Just by the air around this supposed Ruby Cazares, the lion could tell that she was surely an interesting girl. There was something in those eyes of hers. Marla couldn't place it, but it was there. As if the devil were dancing inside of them. And Marla liked it. She could already tell that the brunette had a certain knack for trouble because she was outside at this time of night, of course, and it was making her even more fond of the snake.
(Marla Quinlan in A Midnight Meeting)

In many ways, Airlia knew that she and Ruby Cazares were the same. They came from rich, pureblooded backgrounds and had been taught to always be a lady. Only this girl was in Slytherin and knew how to manipulate and be cunning, and Airlia a little Hufflepuff... Did not. She was a baby badger, and could easily be hunted down by a snake like this.

Airlia had first noticed the girl in DADA where the girl had sat and looked around - no observed every single thing in the room. She seemed to notice every speck of dust, book, movement, and detail of the room.

The girl was determined to gain something. Whether it was power, intelligence or fame Airlia didn't know, but even a simpleton could see that the Slytherin girl was after something. She kept people at bay by acting cold and distant, unreachable to those below her status. She intimidated people by appearing to be superior and the ways of purebloods were embedded deep into the girl to the point of it taking years to shake off the traditions if she ever tried to.

Now while others might shy away, Airlia didn't. When it came to class, blood, family, and power the two girls were equals. That meant that they could become either allies or enemies, in either case together they could achieve wonders or cause wonderous damage. However, Airlia wasn't certain if being anything other than strangers could be a good thing since their goals were different...
(Airlia Winter in Strangers)

Emile quite liked Ruby's personality. She seemed sure of herself, but not in an annoying way. She had this aura to her, and it made you want to sit up straight and be on your best behavior. Not in a bad way, but he had never met anyone like her before. He felt like she was someone who would decide what they wanted to do, and then do it, and do it well. All of the their people in his life always thought about what they were going to do for too long. His parents, for example. In Ruby's case, she seemed free, quick witted, and unique. She was the type of person Emile wished he could be, but probably never would be.
(Emile Yorke in Searching For Anything)

She carried herself with such dignity that Eris had to study the girl, watching the expressions of confidence and calculation on her pale face. Eris wasn’t very good at reading facial expressions, but in the faint moments that she saw the brunette’s face, there was a multitude of emotions. First calculation and coolness that was strange for a girl not yet in her teenage years, then the formation of a light smile and a playful expression that Eris recognized from her own childhood and days spent at the park.

She was perfectly fine with just stopping around outside, even if she did feel a flash of shock about how smart the pureblooded Slytherin next to her was.
(Eris Fawley in Squids and Strangers)

For example, Vales noticed how the girl talked, careful and composed. Her grandmother talked like that, and although her grandmother was a master manipulator, Vales didn't get the same vibe from this girl. Instead, the girl seemed in control of herself, and that made the usually anxious Vales relax.
(Vales Minter in One More Dance)

Scratching his temples, he shamelessly stared at the girl. Cold beauty, a nice way of defining her looks.

She radiated that 'I really could have been in Ravenclaw' energy. There was something sharp in her gaze, something the two of them had in common.
(Remy Alto in Eat Your Greens!)

As she stammered on in nonsensical words, another girl joined the group. This one walked up with a slow determination, no trace of the frenzy that surrounded the rest of the crowd. The brunette could not have been much older than Gwen, but there was a wisdom and severity about her that would have piqued the celebrity's interest had she not been so preoccupied.
(Guinevere Warren in A Falling Start to the Good Part)

Ruby exuded a sort of confidence, an intelligence. Her eyes raked over everything around her, and although Bridget knew little about her, she could tell she was very observant.

Ruby definitely was intelligent, something she valued in friends. It was annoying to be surrounded by people who don’t take hints, after all. But Ruby scared her too. There was something... manipulative about her. Maybe it was the way she noticed everything. [...] She would need to know a lot more about Ruby before trusting her. She was a Slytherin, after all, and Bridget had the feeling she possessed cunning in spades. But everything Ruby had done had been so subtle—her observations of everyone had been almost imperceptible.
(Bridget Collins in Introduction on the Black Lake)

She had seen the remarkable intelligent girl around before, seen how many were intimidated of the brunette in a way that stemmed from a certain difference in behaviour that Astrea knew very well…
(Astrea Soleil Neptune in Weaving a Tapestry of Stories)

There was something else, too. How she carried herself, how she dressed, the way she talked, that slightly 'better than thou' look in her eye. He could tell that this girl likely came from money.

Anyway, she was looking at him as if to probe for weakness. It made him uncomfortable. […] It suddenly became clear to Hengist; this girl is sharp. Very sharp. He could see this going one of two ways. Either this girl was, as he first suspected, trying to find someone to turn into staff to curry favor. Or, this girl had something in common with him; an itch to try, to experiment...to learn, whatever the consequences may be. The problem was that he did not know which it was.
(Hengist Warbeck in Research Undertaking)

… the brunette had a look of intelligence and cunning in her eyes, so she was dangerous, and given her posture and air of grace, Elena guessed pureblood. There was confidence there too, but Elena could tell that the confidence was almost certainly going to get the girl in deeper trouble than she would want.

"You seem like the type to bury your emotions, especially anger. It probably bubbles up and I'd guess when that happens people better run right? You're a lot stronger than you look, especially emotionally. You kick ass and take names with the best of them when it comes down to it. I'd say you've got an adventurous spirit, especially seeing as you decided to talk to the blue-haired badass herself, usually people are either scared or disdainful."
(Elena Jones in Studying Fiction)

She spoke English well, better than most of his fellow classmates, and it was like a breath of fresh air after a stuffy winter.
(Elijah Huang in Troublesome, Troublesome)

She herself was used to climbing trees and hiking, but her movements were always so brisk and abrupt while this girl was poised and precise - it was like watching a swan fly in the sky. But perhaps she was more graceful than that of a swan.
(Saskia Nicholson in Reaching New Heights)

There was something about her frigid tone that grated on him. She was acting like she had the right to know everything and anything, and she wasn't even one of those prefects. The tilt to her chin reminded him of a bully he had faced once, arrogant and all.
(Isaac Ambrose in Reaching New Heights)

Now that she had time to look more closely, Margo realised that she knew this girl. Not personally, of course, but she’d definitely heard about Ruby Cazares. The way she held herself was very becoming of a young lady... or, at least, that’s what Margo’s muggle grandmother would have said. She had seen Ruby around the common room a few times, and had observed the way in which the girl held herself- as if she were on trial in court. […] she rather admired it, because it was unique.
(Margo White in Marvellous Mud)

Looking at Ruby now, Cleo thought that the other girl was definitely a leader. Perhaps it had been why they’d argued on their first encounter, but Cleo found that she didn’t mind Ruby’s way of taking charge now, found it comforting, almost.

Cleo thought that the other girl was very hard to figure out, her views were intricate and a little contrary, and there were layers to peel off before Ruby was utterly herself.

It slightly concerned Cleo that Ruby talked of things with such an objective point of view, she barely knew a thing about the other girl’s views.
(Cleo Cabello in The Second Meeting)

For some reason, she had a bizarre feeling about Ruby... Something about her didn't feel quite right, something felt off. She smiled awkwardly as she looked around her, trying not to have any eye contact with the Prefect.
(Charlotte Cadunt in Trouble in the Dark)

The slightly cocky version of the girl she’d previously seen covered in mud had been a completely different person to the one she saw now. No matter what opinions she had about Ruby, she couldn’t deny that the girl was fascinating. The way she held herself, the way her moods changed, the way she talked- it was an endless list.

It seemed that Ruby Cazares had perfected all her masks, both the carefree and the prefect, and that was the true reason that Margo stayed silent. She was jealous of the girl.
(Margo White in Trouble in the Dark)

This girl called Ruby was very well spoken, but also extremely intuitive. She didn't realize how intensely the Slytherin must've been analyzing her and Millie, but she suddenly felt as if she was out in the open.
(Senna Southwind in Tea and Old Books)

Listening to Ruby's voice made Millie furrow her eyebrows. What was she trying to assume? How was this girl eleven years old? This girl was brilliant, even to Millie's standards.

Millie let her mouth drop slightly agape. What the hell was wrong with this girl? Did she never have a childhood? […] Did this girl grow up at the age of five years old?

She wanted to know what had made this girl so sophisticated, instead of so cheerful and full of life, like most children her age were.
(Euphrasia Millie in Tea and Old Books)

Whilst doing so, she followed Ruby. She liked that the other girl wasn’t looking for reassurance or company, and that she would do what she needed with or without Cleo.

It seemed to Cleo that she cared about her image, with the way she stood and walked and the clothes she wore, but that she was not particularly interested if people liked her or not- they could think whatever they wanted on that front.
(Cleo Cabello in How Far I’ll Go)

Hjørdis had to note how polite Ruby was, it pleased her. In fact, she did not mind the interruption at all when the students were that polite. It was usually rather pleasant to engage in a conversation with respectful students.
(Hjørdis Jensen in How Far I’ll Go)

Right away, they were impressed by her quiet air of confidence, as well as her proper lady-like manner of appearance and courtesy.
(Andrew Vance (and family) in Leaving the Nest)

Something about how unphased the girl in front of her seemed was off putting.
(Kamryn Greer in Why so Interested in Dusty Books?)

Though she always behaved slightly arrogantly around others, Diane didn't appreciate when anyone else besides her did it. She tried not to be too irritated at the other girl's air of superiority, but it definitely rubbed her the wrong way.
(Diane Wright in Advanced Study)

“Ruby Cazares, thank you for making me see the world in a way I never had before. Go and show it what you can do.”
(Cleo Cabello in Farewell.)

Second Year
Reducio
Hailey didn't dare move. Something about this person didn't bode well with her, like this was a hunt and she was the prey. It wasn't even that she didn't want to move, she just couldn't. She was frozen in place, forced to do nothing but listen as the person drew closer.

Hailey managed to figure out that it was a girl. She moved too...elegantly, like she had grown up with too much luxury and knew it. […] Nothing about this girl said 'unkempt' or 'disorganized', she was the exact opposite of those words, with her neatly combed hair and crisp uniform. There was something about the way she looked around that made Hailey feel uneasy.
(Hailey Hinkle in The Night Creeper)

There resonated something familiar in her poise and presentation. The girl spoke with a certain brand of politeness he had not seen much of since leaving home, and there was in it a cordial comfort.

While Ruby wondered over Pericles' background, the boy did the same of her. Many misinterpreted that formal nature as something impersonal, or haughty, or greater-than-thou. This couple of kids wore it like a comfortable pair of wintry gloves: practical and easy to slip on. No matter the correlating bloodline, a presence of politeness and absence of competition was a satisfying state to find one's self in. Her smile sent his spreading, a short nod offered in shared enthusiasm.
(Pericles Dralt in Drawn Together)

The Slytherin had a cool casual attitude which meshed well with Peri's own mild nature, making her easy to talk with, and she shared his hunger for adventure.
(Pericles Dralt in Secret Blossom Ball)

Still caught in her thoughts, Ileen didn’t notice the light footed prefect until she approached her. The steps in the dewy grass were hardly audible in the calm of the morning. Her heart skipped a beat when the clear voice, cool as the morning dusk, broke the perfect silence.
Ileen flinched slightly and turned her head only to meet the pale blue eyes of a girl who she vaguely recognised as one of the prefects of her own house.
The younger girl looked up at the brunette Slytherin, just taking in the scene not showing any emotions. The prefect girl was intimidating with her clear and clipped speaking, the straight posture and perfect hair, but she didn’t attack Ileen or did anything to harm her. All she did was point out the rules and to impose the consequences on her. That was reasonable.

(Ileen Knight in A Way Out)

The scene was similar to one from earlier on in the year: Pericles had come across Ruby facing down three other girls, intent on pelting her with snowballs. The lad leapt to side with her, levitating a snowman's head and sending it sailing towards them in retaliation before they booked it together. Granted, he hadn't known that Ruby initiated that encounter.
He didn't know that she had provoked
this encounter either.
(Pericles Dralt in Goodbye to Goodlow)

Realizing that the two Hufflepuffs were not only facing off against two Headliner members, but also two prefects, and two of the brightest students of their respective years, Ami cast a worried glance back towards Amadea. Sure, the two had seniority and age over them, but authority...? It had been a long, long time since Dea had been a prefect, and no one in their right mind would ever give Ami a single drop of authority. Maybe... maybe this wasn't such a good idea after all, getting into a fistfight with two extremely capable duelists.
Her conviction continued to slip as Ruby played up her victim act, glancing back towards Dea again.
(Ami Procoppio in Goodbye to Goodlow)

As the Slytherin turned around, Lizzie was surprised to see the sheer anger in her eyes. The look on the dark-haired girl's face would've been enough to make the redhead cower away, had she not been Fearless.

Then the girl spoke, her harsh words like daggers, each one cutting deeper and deeper into Lizzie's carefully constructed pride. By the end, she was near tears, yet angrier than she'd ever been.
(Lizzie Callaghan in Hot Chocolate Incident)

Glancing up at the girl, she returned the endearing gaze that was given, a bit flattered by the fact that her blue eyes seemed so icy that they could turn someone's blood cold, but somehow Ruby made them warm, in a way. Like a hot tub. No, that's not very poetic. It felt more similar to the dancing blue flames under the mounds of yellow and orange on a crackling campfire. And it was nice. Before Ruby, she didn't know what it was like to feel vulnerable and safe with someone at the same time.
(Marla Quinlan in it’s not noise if you tap your foot)

Third Year
Reducio
A cold, slightly condescending voice caught Tina's attention. Her head whipped up to meet the eyes of a rather terrifying-looking girl, already dressed in her school robes, not a wrinkle in sight. The gleaming, immaculately placed prefect badge on her uniform made Tina tense up, shrinking in on herself sheepishly.

There had been absolutely zero indication that this prefect was a pure-blood, aside from the spine-chilling atmosphere she seemed to have bought along with her whilst patrolling ...

There was just something in her voice that demanded respect, despite the fact that she was only a young girl herself.

Tina froze as the cold, piercing gaze of Ruby Cazares fell upon her, shrinking into herself.
(Martyna Romero in First Year Fears)

Also, she really didn't want to mess with Ruby. That girl was terrifying.

There was no point in lying to Ruby about this either - she had eyes like a hawk, ideal for her prefect duty.

(Martyna Romero in Oh, to be in Gryffindor)

The Prefect in front of her just looked at Allie, her face expressionless for a few moments. Her gaze was icy, and suddenly the first year felt like backing away and finding someone else to talk to.
(Allie Lewis in Nonstop Curiosity.)

The almost deadpan and blunt delivery of the Slytherin's warning definitely left no more doubts in Aoife's mind. She definitely believed the girl and took her warning to heart only giving a quiet wide-eyed nod in response. The icy stare of the girl rendering her incapable of much else for the moment.
(Aoife Lovett in Curiosities and First Meetings)

First, a Slytherin prefect, Ruby Cazares. She had a mixed to bad reputation among the snakes, and predictably stood off to the side, slightly glowering and looking like she was above the rest of them. Well, perhaps she was. Flash made note not to get on the side of her righteous disdain.

It wasn’t as though Pericles was the only one he needed to look out for. Ruby seemed to pick up on Flash’s plan right away and move to defend Xailah. He could have guessed as much, though the immediacy of their pact was still somewhat frightening.
(Flash Holmwood in Shuntbumps)

While Xailah taunted the child, Ruby aimed to hurt the girl. [...] Xailah was shocked to see the girl still on her broom, and surprised by Ruby's ferocity.

Xailah didn't know the full extent of Rubys anger. She could really, only tell that the snake was... off. There was a lot of negative energy brewing around the child.
(Xailah Alptraum in Shuntbumps)

While tranquil as ever, Pericles was not oblivious to Xailah's present skittishness just as he had not overlooked Ruby's recently haunted aura. He had witnessed an unprecedented ferocity from her on a certain prefect patrol, and again at the SWAG game. Her bursts of sadism would not go ignored. But here, now, was not the right time to talk of such things. All Peri could do just then was express how earnestly he wanted to have her around, that he and Xailah welcomed Ruby readily.
(Pericles Dralt in Pampering Pristine Pets)

Ami had spotted Ruby's note to Amadea (of course Ruby would leave a red rock, she was such a drama queen) and immediately, her instinct to punch something ignited. "I'm going to step on that slimy snake if it's the last thing I do,"

Something about how the Slytherin spoke, as if she were better than everyone else, seriously rubbed the Hufflepuff the wrong way, although she remained surprisingly silent for the time being as Ruby prattled on.

God. Did she mention how much she hated every single time Cazares decided to unhook her jaw to spit verbal venom?
Honestly, it probably would've been
fine if Ruby had just bickered with Amadea using normal, average vocabulary that normal, average teenagers were accustomed to hearing. But she used these huge, SAT-worthy words that made Ami want to scream "NERD!" at the top of her lungs at the Slytherin prefect.

While Ruby stared at her coldly with her pale, blue, snake-like eyes, Ami stared right back at her defiantly, her fists and jaw clenched tightly.

Cazares continued with her high-and-mighty way of speaking, even going as far as to speak down to Cecily (at least, in Ami's eyes). "Read my lips, Cazares," Ami growled, stepping forward slightly. "I'm accusing you of being a pretentious," step, "fucking," step, "asshole."
(Ami Procoppio in So We Meet Again)

Although this happened to be the first time that Cecily had gotten the pleasure of meeting Ruby, the Slytherin's hypocrisy was certainly coming through loud and clear as Cecily looked over her shoulder almost by instinct. The younger student's bold, accusing words of bringing backup and violating their vague and technically unspecific agreement still hung in the air as Cecily caught a shape in the shadows, one that didn't quite fit into its surroundings: the silhouette of a student, likely lurking to back Ruby up in the case that this got ugly.

Amadea and Ami hated Ruby; ergo, Cecily hated her too, especially as Ruby continued to monologue, dropping accusations and gaslighting Cecily's friends. Damn, she hated to admit it, but this girl was smooth. She was definitely rehearsing this in front of a mirror in her dorm today.
(Cecily Quinn in So We Meet Again)

... all Xailah really knew was that Ruby needed help. And not just with a fight. Ruby had been acting odd for awhile, but Xailah couldn't quite put her finger on how she had been acting odd. Until the most recent S.W.A.G game of course. During the game, the attentive child, had noticed that Ruby was... aggressive towards select players. Namely miss May Moonstar. Which at first, Xailah thought was understandable. May was just wonderful to poke fun at. But when Xailah replayed the game while getting ready for bed that night, she realized Ruby hadn't been poking fun at May. Like at all.

In a different setting, or a world far, far away from this one; Ruby would have made a perfect villain. She had the walk. She had the talk. She even had the lungs and the patience to do the long, tedious (but very villainous) monologues.

Had Xailah known that Pericles- her bird- her boy- her first and only best friend (because you can only ever have one)- was the "close friend" in question; she would have beaten miss Ami bloody right then and there. No hesitation. No second thoughts. Man. You had to hand it to Ruby- the snakelet was great at making people irrationally angry. She knew which buttons to push.

Ami had grabbed Rubys hook, allowing herself to be reeled in. For a second- no more, no less- there was a glittering spark of clarity in the dungeons. It was like the parting of clouds after a moment of rain. It was quite clear why Ruby was in Slytherin. She was crafty. She was clever. And most of all, she was a snake. Not in the negative, cliquey sense- in a more complementary... sneaky sense. An absolute snake.
(Xailah Alptraum in So We Meet Again)

In an almost-choreographed motion, Dmitri and his partner, Ruby, cast two synchronized Flipendo projectiles that headed straight for the unfortunate first year.
There was no question that both would hit. They were simply too powerful a team.

"Not terrible, Cazares, but I'm sure you can do better than that." That was as close to a compliment as he could manage—no point stroking a snake's ego in the midst of battle.
(Dmitri Jones in Group F: Ravenclaw vs Slytherin)

This time she was here to watch Ruby duel. The young snake had been acting a bit strange as of late; so Xailah wanted to be around as much as possible to make sure the child was doing alright. The hatchling deserved all of the support, that the lioness had to offer. Xailah desperately wanted to see Ruby work through whatever was bothering her. Thus, Xailah promised herself that she would be there to help Ruby- even if the girl refused the help. The Gryffindor didn't want to see the snake walk down the path, that she was currently walking.
(Xailah Alptraum in Duelling Stage 1, Day 2)

Interesting though, that the crowd seemed far more enamored by Ruby, who was not faring quite as spectacularly, even having one of her spells backfire despite not being under very much pressure. It seemed that even though both of them were rough around the edges, Ruby had formed significant attachments in the school, and Dmitri had not.

Of course, the two of them were older students, acclaimed in their positions and grades. It would be wise to continue to pay attention to their matches.
(Flash Holmwood in Duelling Stage 1, Day 2)

Frankly, Ruby was much more intimidating then just any 'pretty girl'. She was smart, talented, ambitious... she ticked all the boxes Illowy might've wanted in a person. The fact that she was pretty felt like a bonus.
(Illowy Magnard in Shoot Your Shot)

"I'll leave it to my teammate to show you exactly what a duellist is capable of. Cazares, if you please." He stated without looking, still eyeing his opponents with a calculating stare—a testament to his reluctant confidence in the abilities of his partner.
(Dmitri Jones in Group F: Hufflepuff vs Slytherin)

What was even cooler than Dmitri's first split spell was Ruby and his split spells. It was amazing, both together and both powerful.
(Frost Cira in Group F: Hufflepuff vs Slytherin)

Of course watching the spells actually hit- and hurt- made the two all the more impressive and scary. That was the problem with being a first year- or rather them being third and fourth years- they could be mean and scary, yet actually have skill to back their confidence.
(Lea Hirsch in Group F: Hufflepuff vs Slytherin)

The duo they faced were rapidly gaining a repute of infamy. The Slytherin captain was said to be blatantly ruthless, and was unlikely to tolerate any sympathy for the first-years he faced. Ruby, on the other hand, was one of Pericles' few close friends. He tended to tune out any buzz of gossip about her, but as a co-captain, it was his responsibility to be aware of the opposition's capabilities.
(Pericles Dralt in Group F: Gryffindor vs Slytherin)

Dmitri Jones and Ruby Cazares. What was it with facing super overpowered fourth years that must certainly be bloodthirsty?
(Everly Charlton in Group F: Gryffindor vs Slytherin)

Fourth Year
Reducio
N/A, didn't thread that year

Fifth Year
Reducio
She looked up quickly to find a girl, seemingly five or maybe even six years older than her. A Slytherin too, from the look of her robes, but that didn't mean anything - the fact that she practically radiated superiority, on the other hand, did. Mahlioz was trying not to be terrified.

The fifth year's blue eyes were amazingly piercing and she felt like she could see her soul. It was more than a little unnerving.

The girl talking to her was... frightening. Imposing. The first year had not expected to be able to speak to her without stammering all over the place, until her words were no longer coherent. [...] As terrifying as the girl named Ruby could be (that had not changed since they had met)... Mahlioz was intrigued, and slightly in awe of, her.
(Mahlioz Evethisawe in A shelf full of... French?)

It doesn't help how elegant and refined Ruby is, either. That presence seems to come so naturally to her whereas Dora has to constantly keep her poise in check. It's intimidating.

Ruby seems like a formidable force to be reckoned with. It's part of why Dora wants so much to be liked by her.
(Isadora Everridge in A Forced Meeting)

But just behind Cec-Ami, balancing out the composition of the mental photo, was a slimy, smelly little snake named Ruby Cazares. Pretty? Sure, sometimes, when she wore those turtleneck sweaters. Evil? Most definitely. Her arch-nemesis? Absolutely, without a doubt. And clearly, Ruby was about to wreak havoc on Cec-Ami because the Slytherin, in all her genius, failed to recognize that the true Ami would never be caught dead wearing such an ill-fitting flannel. Her initial glee at Cecily's hilarious feat instantly morphed into a mask of anger and disdain, and a sneer crept over her normally happy and open face.
(Ami Procoppio in Duck!)

Unless, of course, the person that just happened to be here at this very moment was everyone's least favorite person in the castle: one slimy snake by the name of Ruby Cazares. Why did she have to be everywhere all the time? The Ravenclaw could live happily without ever setting eyes upon the Slytherin for the rest of her life, but they were both already all in, so they might as well see this out.

She couldn't hold it against the Hufflepuff that she wanted to bomb Ruby with a container of coffee. Honestly, had Cecily been the one in her shoes, she might very well have done the same. The slimy Slytherin, in all her evil, power-abusing glory, had it coming. [...] Cecily stared in mild annoyance at the Slytherin girl cradling Ruby-Duck like a child, clearly protective of her own house. Cecily would typically have no issue with defending one's housemates, but this particular housemate did not deserve a defense. She deserved persecution for her misdeeds and general evil behaviour.
(Cecily Quinn in Duck!)

Meenauh smiled at her with her face shining, a wide grin on her face — a signal of total synchronisation with Ruby's hunger for knowledge. In this case, it would most probably be experience. But, whatever, really.
(Meenauh Silmataurea in Vivamus)

Dora straightens up as the older Slytherin approaches her desk, eager to impress and nervous to fail. As always, it's hard to decipher the expression Ruby wears, whether she's pleased or displeased, so Dora listens close to her words for any hint of her mood.

It's also scary, feeling like someone can see through you. Dora has so much she tries to hide.
(Isadora Everridge in How the Snake Tutors the Badger)

Ruby Cazares, infamous duelling champion, was looking at him as if he were a particularly unpleasant potions ingredient that she was being forced to slice. He tried to quickly smooth over his surprise, and just barely managed to match her unimpressed look without flinching. Christ, even her perfect posture made him subconciously want to straighten up from his casual slouch.

He felt like a bug underneath a microscope. In fact, it was probably well within her capabilities to
turn him into a bug.

Her frigid gaze didn't grow any warmer, but perhaps his determination struck a chord. Mercifully, she didn't hex him for impertinence or anything.
(Rebecca Loops in Politics of Fear)

But she decided to attempt polite behavior, secretly scared slightly of the intimidating fifth year.
(Duvessa Ember in Hitting the Books)

It was then that he turned to his dueling partner. Cazares was his first teammate since he started dueling and for just a little bit, he could say he was grateful for them being one of the first witnesses to his rise to glory. Not to mention that aside from Santario (who has unfortunately retired from dueling, bless her heart), they seemed to be one of the very few people who didn't quake at the sight of him.
"Cazares, glad to have you back. The usual?" Dmitri would implore, indicating that this was simply just another duel for them to win.

And just like old times, Dmitri and Ruby fell right into a rhythm of synchronicity that was both familiar and startling.
(Dmitri Jones in Slytherin vs Ravenclaw: Match 12)

Gryffindor
Reducio
Alan Vanes: Very positive acquaintance, faded
He was really fun—willing to play an imaginary game with Ruby when they met for the first time. Ruby would view it as a shame they didn’t interact more after that.

Alexandra Edwards: Positive acquaintance
Ruby found Alexandra fun and pleasant to be around, but they didn’t see each other again.

Anastasia Beckett: Best friend
Ana is without a doubt one of Ruby’s best friends. There is very little Ruby wouldn’t do for her, and the two are extremely close despite the bumps they’ve had in the course of their friendship.

Bearrach Fanai: Stranger
She bumped into Ruby once. There wasn’t much time for Ruby to form an opinion on her.

Cleo Cabello: Former friend, now gone
Cleo was one of Ruby’s first friends at Hogwarts. They wanted to save the world together. However, their time was cut short as Cleo was withdrawn from Hogwarts due to issues involving her family.

Eilis Halloran: Neutral acquaintance
Ruby appreciated her directness and willingness to admit to potential flaws, but didn’t understand why she didn’t just use magic to find what she had lost. Ruby likely wouldn’t remember her now.

Emile Yorke: Formerly close friend
Upon meeting, Ruby and Emile instantly found many similarities and a kinship in one another. They were close and companionable, but haven’t seen each other in recent years.

Eris Fawley: Positive acquaintance
Ruby liked the playful metamorphmagus from the time they met looking for the giant squid.

Euphrasia Millie: Slightly negative acquaintance
Self-righteous, impulsive, too emotional… Ruby views Millie as inferior.

Everly Charlton: Coward, mildly disliked
She joined her teammate in surrendering before their duel had even begun. Another weak coward.

Galton Lansdale: Neutral acquaintance
Ruby isn’t really sure what to make of him. He’s a little odd.

Griseldis Edelhardt: Loosely positive acquaintance
They were prefects at the same time and had a couple of brief interactions, but nothing particularly notable.

Guinevere Warren: Stranger
She fell off her broom on a crowded day once and caused quite a scene.

Hugh Lowe: Neutral acquaintance
They’ve met briefly a couple of times but not enough for a full opinion. Ruby doesn’t entirely understand or trust the way he acts.

Isaac Ambrose: Negative acquaintance
He ignored Ruby and was being aloof as well as vaguely rude to her for no reason.

Ivy Bellamy: Complicated
Ruby didn’t like or trust her at first due to her being extremely rude to Breana, who was crying. However, she did try to comfort Ruby when needed, so that counts for something.

Jackson Valentine: Coward, mildly disliked
He surrendered before their duel had even begun, depriving the Slytherins of what they showed up for.

Kamryn Greer: Neutral acquaintance
She was bold, which Ruby respected. She wouldn’t recognize her now.

Kyle DeRook: Vague acquaintance
Ruby has seen him twice but never formed much of an opinion on him.

Lizzie Callaghan: Strongly disliked
She spilled hot chocolate on Ruby, burning her. To make matters worse, she couldn’t even remember the spell to clean it up. A careless idiot, no doubt.

Lucian Grey: Stranger
They had very similar body language, but they barely met at the lake once.

Marla Quinlan: Best friend
Ruby and Marla have a closeness that is nearly unmatched, with twin adventurous souls. Their friendship is wholesome, with pleasant memories of cuddling in a tree, watching the sunrise, going out for ice cream, and buying pets together.

Meenauh Silmataurea: Potential platonic soulmate, loose friend
Meenauh and Ruby instantly hit it off, sharing a depth of curiosity the extent of which Ruby has never found in another since.

Rafael D’Spacito: Disliked
He’s annoying and comes between Ruby and Anastasia. She doesn’t care for him at all, and can barely tolerate him for Ana’s sake.

Ruka Burnett-Tân: Disliked
He wouldn’t leave Ruby alone, irritating her with his optimism and energy when she was clearly uninterested.

Savannah Rose: Negative acquaintance
Ruby is jealous and angry at her for coming between her and Marla. She also thinks Savannah is presumptuous and misjudges her importance.

Scarlett Aden: Disliked
Scarlett’s first reaction to hearing a human noise is apparently to send a Knockback Jinx their way, essentially kicking Ruby while she was down. She did not appreciate it.

Vera Mendaci: Negative acquaintance/stranger
She had an attitude as well as no respect for books.

Veronica Turner: Positive acquaintance
They shared a passion for drawing, so Ruby thought decently of her. Roni, as she called herself, didn’t make a lasting impression on Ruby as that was the last they saw of one another.

Xailah Alptraum: Close friend
After several positive interactions, standing up for one another, and Xailah even coming to Ruby’s aid during a fight, Ruby would consider them close. Xailah is unique, interesting, clever, kind, and Ruby really likes and respects her.

Slytherin
Reducio
Alexx Séverin: Neutral acquaintance
Ruby drew her once and they were former teammates on the Quidditch team. They played a heated match of Gobstones against one another. Ruby has lingering respect for her due to the positions Alexx held as former Editor in Chief of the Hogwarts Headliner, prefect, and feared Chaser (due to her tendency to blatch).

Amy Hayes: Stranger
Ruby gave her directions to get to class once.

Andrew Vance: Positive acquaintance
Ruby helped him onto the platform to catch the Hogwarts Express at the beginning of their first year. She also answered his questions about an errand she was running. He has always been polite and seemed nice.

Astrea Soleil Neptune: Positive acquaintance but complicated
Astrea has an interesting demeanor and general presence that intrigues Ruby. While Ruby isn’t happy that she witnessed a moment of vulnerability and embarrassment for her, Astrea did treat her with kindness.

Avery Halen: Stranger
Ruby found her asleep at the breakfast table once, giving a vague impression of carelessness. She wouldn’t recognize her.

Ayarai Blizard: Stranger
They met in a tree once and the other girl was polite enough.

Bridget Collins: Positive/neutral acquaintance
Ruby found Bridget potentially intriguing from the time they interacted in their first year. They were also former teammates on the Slytherin Quidditch team.

Cassandra Ironwoods: Neutral acquaintance
Ruby didn’t really have time to get to know them, but they revealed that they’re a Parselmouth.

Cheryl Gorham: Stranger
Ruby viewed her as foolish and confusing after she threw herself into the lake in front of Ruby. Now, she wouldn’t recognize her.

Dan Palmer: Former captain/teammate
When Ruby played Quidditch officially, Dan was Slytherin’s Seeker and Captain.

Daniel Weaver: Negative acquaintance
He was rude, unfriendly, and accused Ruby of staring. Having left a bad impression on her, Ruby is thankful she never met him again. She would be unlikely to recognize him.

December Faust: Stranger/vague acquaintance
December dropped an assignment in front of Ruby once. She was incredibly timid and shy. Ruby wouldn’t recognize her if they met again.

Diane Wright: Negative acquaintance
Her arrogance and insensibility irritated Ruby, leading her to view Diane as inferior.

Dmitri Jones: Duelling partner/former captain
He can be really irritating sometimes, but Ruby respects him due to his skills. However, she would never dream of bowing to him, and has always been ready to fire snide comments right back at him. At the end of the day, though, they’re a team.

Duvessa Ember: Tutee, neutral
Duvessa’s cousin asked Ruby to tutor her, so she is. There hasn’t been much time to form a real opinion on her yet.

Edric Banes: Former teammate
Edric was one of Ruby’s teammates when she played Quidditch, but that’s pretty much the extent of what she knows about him.

Eleanor Burkhart: Stranger
They paired up for Potions once and Eleanor could hardly stay awake.

Elena Jones: Former friend and mentor
Elena and Ruby found the same quick-witted adventuring spirit in one another. After sharing analyses of each other, they quickly became friends, with Elena falling into the role of a bit of a mentor figure. They are now out of touch and have been for years.

Eliana Ostergard: Stranger
Ruby saw Eliana once in the common room, but she didn’t make any impression on Ruby.

Elijah Huang: Neutral acquaintance, liked
Ruby respects and likes him after some light banter and realizing they have a similar demeanor. However, they did get off slightly on the wrong foot.

Elizabeth Isaacs: Negative acquaintance
A blood purist, stubborn, stupid, and foolish—all characteristics of Elizabeth that make Ruby look down on her.

Elora Jameson: Stranger
Ruby talked to her in the common room once back in first year.

Erin Ryan: Disliked
Ruby doesn’t understand what on earth is wrong with Erin. They were Quidditch teammates, but that sentiment didn’t go far when they properly interacted and Erin essentially accused Ruby of being evil and spouted a lot of nonsense Ruby didn’t understand.

Flash Holmwood: Neutral acquaintance
She knows Flash mostly by reputation, through Xailah explaining to Ruby how he stalked members of authority and wrote about them in his notebooks. Ruby was mildly intrigued.

Hailey Hinkle: Stranger
A student that Ruby caught out after curfew. She had no particular opinions regarding Hailey.

Ileen Knight: Positive acquaintance
Despite meeting her during a violation of curfew, Ruby appreciates Ileen’s courage, respect, and honesty.

Illowy Magnard: First crush
Ruby cares about and respects Illowy deeply, liking her for her intelligence and all aspects of her personality. She will always have a special place in Ruby’s heart.

Jack Burnett: Positive acquaintance
He has proven himself to be clever on multiple occasions. Ruby has a small amount of respect for him.

Koko Riddle: Friend
Koko and Ruby met early in their first year and have been friends ever since. They have found themselves in several companionable situations, having been Quidditch teammates and prefects together.

Luna Choi: Neutral acquaintance
Ruby intended to make friends with her. However, Luna was also rude.

Mara Ashlador: Vague acquaintance
They interacted once and Mara was pleasant enough, but it wasn’t meaningful.

Margo White: Best friend
Something about Margo’s presence loosens Ruby up, bringing out her mischievous, wild side. From races in the mud, to crafting and burning puppets late at night, to hanging out accompanied by their cats, they are firm friends with plenty of happy memories.

Min-seo Kim: Positive acquaintance/friend, out of touch
Ruby got along with the quiet-tempered girl, thinking her sweet and pleasant. However, they never saw each other again after their first year.

Nico Shymane: Casual friend
For whatever reason, Ruby decided she would protect Nico, a feeling that has come up regarding the dhampir in several scenarios. They were also former teammates on the Quidditch team.

Oliver Cavallo: Stranger
Ruby saw him feeding birds once, which implies a caring nature, but that was the extent of their interaction.

Opeila Winters: Neutral acquaintance
She seemed nice enough, but was in the way of Ruby talking to her lost friend (Thomas), so it wasn’t a great time to meet.

Persephone Nicholas: Stranger
They didn’t really talk much, so Ruby wouldn’t remember her, but she had a loosely positive opinion of Persephone.

Preston Woodblum: Negative acquaintance
He insisted on flirting with Ruby multiple times despite her clear disinterest. She finds him creepy, off-putting, and irritating.

Remy Alto: Positive acquaintance, faded
He had a fun attitude and was more interesting than many other classmates.

Ruby Hall: Vague acquaintance
They shared the same first name and house, which was a weird coincidence.

Selim Faust: Neutral-positive acquaintance/stranger
He seemed sensible from the time they met.

Starlee Kennedy: Neutral/negative acquaintance
Starlee had to resort to physical, Muggle violence in order to make her point/get revenge, something that Ruby was not pleased to find when she broke up the conflict.

Sylvie Maple: Positive/friendly acquaintance
Ruby likes her, even if she has a habit of being cryptic to Sylvie.

Theodore Gabhann: Vague acquaintance
While they had similar feelings about their pureblood families, their initial meeting in the Owlery back in first year was the only time they ever interacted.

Thomas Lestrange: Friend, sometimes complicated, faded slightly
Thomas and Ruby became close after they get caught in a storm, having to shelter together for a few hours. However, Thomas disappears, and when he returns, Ruby doesn’t have much of a chance to talk to him because of Erin Ryan.

Thora Larkston: Former teammate, positive acquaintance
They played Quidditch together. She was also down to have a snowball fight that Ruby unexpectedly started, which earned her some appreciation.

Wyatt Starkey: Disliked
He irritated Ruby a little, so she flung a spell at him. Unfortunately, he was clever enough to discover her identity, momentarily placing Ruby in a position of vulnerability.

Ravenclaw
Reducio
Aida Mòrsgor-Ama Ellwood: Duelling opponent
Weak. Childish. Foolish. Pathetic. Ruby has a negative opinion of them so far as they showed up to an official duel in a fuzzy bear hat.

Alan Noble: Stranger
He seemed nice, if a bit awkward. Joined Ruby’s side in a snowball fight.

Alex Cheong: Positive acquaintance
Nice kid, quite quiet. They met during their first train ride to Hogwarts.

Allie Lewis: Negative acquaintance
She was annoying. Once her questions started, they just wouldn’t stop.

Ana Fox: Negative acquaintance, disdained
She was in a physical fight that Ruby had to break up, so she doesn’t think very highly of Ana.

Annabelle Osborne: Neutral acquaintance/stranger
Ruby found her mildly entertaining but a little insensible.

Aoife Lovett: Positive acquaintance
Ruby likes her decently and was starting to view her as a bit of a younger sister figure in need of protecting.

Arc Perscivious: Stranger
They met briefly in the chaos of the 2019 Blossom Ball, without time for Ruby to form an opinion on him.

Breana Oliveire: Positive acquaintance
She’s a sweetheart. Ruby comforted her when she was crying once.

Cecily Quinn: Enemy
Cecily has a very poor choice in friends, throwing herself in with Amadea and Ami. She’s as irritating as her friends, and can really throw a punch… She also transfigured Ruby into a duck.

Damien Waters: Stranger
Didn’t properly meet, even though he was present after Ruby had caused some mischief. She wouldn’t recognize him.

Delilah Stewart: Duelling opponent
In Ruby’s opinion, she was just an insignificant, inferior Ravenclaw who was doomed to fall. Dmitri seemed to have personal issues with her, though, so maybe she did have some significance.

Elzabeth Gillan: Negative acquaintance, disdained
She was in a physical fight that Ruby had to break up, so she doesn’t think very highly of Elzabeth.

Hengist Warbeck: Liked/respected, faded friend
A fellow experimenter, Ruby respects Hengist and took an instant liking to him. However, time weakens bonds.

Henry Reed: Former friend, out of touch
Henry was there for Ruby when she was first starting to process issues with her parents. They were pretty close friends, but have long been out of touch, so they’d barely be acquaintances now.

Holly Frost: Negative acquaintance, vaguely
Holly was present during the awkwardness of Ruby getting caught trespassing. She tried to call the police on her.

Kaegen Deathmote: Neutral acquaintance/stranger, but memorable
He was unusual and sickly-looking, leaving an impression on Ruby both from that and the fact that he had been flying around in a makeshift dragon costume.

Katie Williams: Stranger
They hardly spoke, rendering Ruby’s intentions meaningless.

Mae Winters: Positive acquaintance, vaguely
She was kind, but not particularly notable. They shared an interest in dragons.

Miranda Everest: Strongly disliked
Ruby is disgusted by her. She shoved Apollo.

Pericles Dralt: Close/firm friend
Ruby really likes Pericles. His calm, caring, inquisitive nature is comforting to her and she enjoys being around him. She appreciates his efforts to involve her in past activities and conversations.

River Dewlight: Neutral acquaintance
Ruby’s first impression of her was that she was insensitive and stupid due to reacting poorly to a situation with Kaegen. However, a couple of years later, they were teammates in a Shuntbumps game, and River seemed to be friendly with Ruby’s friends Xailah and Pericles. With years having passed since their first meeting, River redeemed herself with this.

Robert Toukmond: Duelling opponent
It was sad, in a kind of pathetic way, that he thought his team stood a chance against Ruby and Dmitri or expected the Slytherins to be nice. Ruby viewed him as foolish, inferior, and insignificant.

Ruthie Greer: Positive acquaintance
She was nice and helped Ruby get her cat back.

Senna Southwind: Neutral acquaintance
Very quiet. She wouldn’t voice her thoughts, which was somewhat annoying considering Ruby’s goal, but she came across as decently smart.

Vales Minter: Positive acquaintance, faded
Good dancer and kind to offer help, but one short interaction was all they ever had.

Hufflepuff
Reducio
Airlia Winter: Neutral acquaintance, vaguely respected
Ruby is curious about Airlia after noticing their similarities in mannerisms and understanding of people.

Amadea Campbell: Enemy/hated
Ruby thinks of Amadea as weak, irritating, and inferior. She likes to use the Hufflepuff as a metaphorical punching bag, manipulatively instigating fights to blow off steam.

Ami Procoppio: Enemy/hated
Ami is a special kind of infuriating. She’s stubborn, stupid, won’t listen, and she’s best friends with Amadea. At least her insults are laughably poor.

Annie Morgan: Neutral acquaintance
She was at the party in the prefects’ bathroom. Ruby knows her from being in the same year and being prefects together. She was a bit irritated when Annie bumped into her in Diagon Alley, but hasn’t had time to form a proper opinion yet.

Charlotte Cadunt: Negative acquaintance
Ruby caught her out after curfew once, thinking her foolish and spineless. However, when up to trouble with her cousins, Ruby found herself trespassing on Charlotte’s family property.

Dorion Anderson: Negative acquaintance
They wanted Ruby to just give up her book and wouldn’t leave her alone. Ruby views them as annoying and insensible.

Ellara Butler: Stranger
They barely even met once, Ruby wouldn’t recognize her.

Ero Hallister: Positive acquaintance/friend, out of touch
Ero was a fellow troublemaker and good fun in the time that Ruby knew her.

Everlee Flynn: Stranger
Ruby saw her at the lake once.

Finn Valois: Stranger
She helped him find certain books once, but would have no reason to recognize him now.

Frost Cira: Duelling opponent
She was nice, but niceties get you nowhere in a duel. In the end, she was proven inferior and cowardly, as she surrendered the duel.

Fumiko Tachibana: Negative acquaintance
Ruby thought that Fumiko was a complete idiot. She could’ve exposed the wizarding world to a bunch of Muggles with her carelessness.

Isadora Everridge: Tutee/mentee
They were forced to meet due to their families, but their conversation leads Ruby to offer to tutor/mentor Isadora. She is slightly protective of the Hufflepuff, treating her with kindness in their tutoring sessions.

Jack Warren: Positive acquaintance
He attended the party in the prefects’ bathroom and livened it up by acting out a music video.

Lea Hirsch: Duelling opponent
Another meaningless victim of Dmitri and Ruby’s strength.

Martyna Romero: Positive acquaintance, sort of
Ruby seems to always find Martyna when she’s breaking the rules. While Ruby views her as immature, she’s also admittedly likable and easy to feel sympathy for.

May Moonstar: Disliked
Weak, careless, obstinate, and pathetic, there’s nothing about May that Ruby likes.

Ophelia Silverton: Stranger
They saw each other on the grounds once but never had time to properly interact.

Quinn Healy: Neutral/positive acquaintance
He was at the party in the prefects’ bathroom. They didn’t really talk but he seemed pleasant enough, and he’s a friend of Nico’s.

Rosie Parker: Positive acquaintance, out of touch
Ruby taught Rosie to skip stones, appreciating her kind demeanor.

Saskia Nicholson: Friend
It took a little while for Saskia to properly warm up to Ruby, but they are now friends.

Serena Davies: Neutral acquaintance/stranger
She was weirdly overly protective of Thora during a snowball fight despite it just being a lighthearted game.

Serena Towers: Neutral acquaintance
Seems alright, but shy. Not much of a chance to form further opinions.

Talia Piper: Neutral acquaintance
Too timid for Ruby’s liking—she wouldn’t come out of her shelter and have fun. She made a cool snow castle, though.

Thea Knott: Stranger/negative acquaintance
Ruby views her as emotional, maybe stupid, and mildly irritating after she completely freaked out.

Professors
Reducio
Cypresse Lian: Respected
Ruby was interested in what (former) Professor Lian had to say, finding her an interesting person to be around and feeling grateful that she would share a part of her culture in an errand.

Felix Lin: Loosely positive
Ruby interviewed them for the Headliner and his kindness and passion were very clear.

Hjørdis Jensen: Highly respected
Professor Jensen is probably the adult Ruby trusts the most. She was willing to entertain Ruby’s questions in her first year, and was especially kind to Ruby when finding her after the shadow spiders had attacked.

Nadège Benoit: Positive acquaintance
Ruby found the (now former) Divination Professor to be kind and welcoming, with an interesting office.
