Bonabé Bonet, Head of House Hufflepuff
Basic Info

Name: Bonabé “BonBon” Bonet
Age: 61
Height: 6’1”
Weight: 217 lbs
Birthplace: St. Martinville, Louisiana, United States
Position: Head of House, Hufflepuff

Appearance: Though Bonabé may be leading the Hufflepuffs, he has ¾ of the mane of a lion. His hair is concentrated on his sides, the back, and beneath his chin. His mutton chops flair out in a goldish gray that betrays his advanced age. Bushy eyebrows sit above his deep blue eyes. Ironically, the rest of his head his completely bare of hair and quite shiny. He will often wear some sort of hat outdoors to protect his head.

Bonabé’s love of food has made him a bit overweight in his old age, though not to the point of obesity. That potbelly tends to be hidden beneath a set of drab brown robes. The robes are merely a formality: beneath them, he wears muggle clothes. This tends to be a long-sleeved button-up shirt with the sleeves partially rolled up, a pair of black slacks, and suspenders to hold said pants up. With any physical work, he is happy to don a pair of denim overalls.

Personality: BonBon values the important things in life: friends, family, and his community. Though that was once limited to his home in Louisiana, he is developing very strong feelings for his adoptive home in Hogwarts. He generally doesn’t keep very many things not relating to those things, preferring a very minimalist lifestyle. What he does keep, he cares very deeply about. He also has strong opinions on what is right and won’t easily back down from those positions. His sense of justice comes from his desire to maintain order. It was partly what brought him to Scotland in the first place.

At his best, BonBon is eager to find others to join his cause. His passion leads to results. He has an idea on how things ought to be and acts on them. Though his old age as subdued his sense of adventure, he was much more eager to try new things as a younger man. Hanging around the students of his house has brought those feelings back to the surface, however.

At his worst, in his pursuit of his ideals, BonBon can come off as a bully or authoritarian, especially when it comes to enforcement of rules. It can be difficult to get him to deviate off his path, though he is open to reason.

History

Bonabé was born into the Bonet wizard family, a bloodline that can be traced back to when Louisiana was a French colony during the late 1700’s. For much of his childhood, he grew up in the swamps, exposed to the influences of French wizardry and the so called “voodoo magic”. Though exposed to magic at an early age, he received a formal education at Ilvermorny. Sorted into House Pukwudgie, his friends admired his southern charm and hospitality.

After graduation, Bonabé returned to the Louisiana Bayou to spend time with the traiteur healers. Regarded by the locals as faith healers, many of the traiteurs were actually practitioners of a wandless healing magic. These particular wizards were often the only source of medical care for the No Majs of the remote area. This community of wizards could not stand by and watch their suffering. They disguised their magic to prevent exposure and breaking of any laws, reciting Catholic prayers while silently casting their magic. Bonabé studied their methods and even participated in the healings. This was also where Bonabé met his wife, one of the traiteurs. Their discussions on the role of wizards in a predominately non-wizard world expanded his mind and made him question the accepted belief that they should live separate lives for all eternity.

Bonabé’s observations were published in popular wizard magazines, causing a debate on wizard involvement in the No Maj world. Though his involvement was controversial, his contributions to healing magic were nonetheless valuable. It earned him a professorship at his alma mater at the age of 32 in 1989.

As a professor in transfiguration, Bonabé shared the native methods of healing magic with senior students and fellow professors. He often served to diffuse arguments among students and staff, because Ilvermony had various groups from all over North America. The gruff East Coast Northerners, relaxed surfer types of the West Coast, prideful Texans, the no nonsense personalities of the South, and those agents of chaos from Florida all were a part of the school population. And that wasn’t even counting Canada, Mexico, Jamaica, and Haiti. With so many different groups, Bonabé along with the rest of the staff had the additional task of making sure everyone got along. They didn’t want the infamy often associated with 1990’s Hogwarts.

Speaking of Hogwarts, Bonabé was part of a delegation of wizards sent to Scotland to cure the outbreak of Krokonophitis in 2000. These wizards pooled their knowledge of healing magic to develop a cure to the disease in the same year, allowing the school to resume operations after the break. For their efforts, the group of wizards, including Bonabé, was awarded honorary degrees in a private ceremony. The ceremony included a presentation of a wand and the traditional donning of the Sorting Hat. The old wizard found it funny that Hufflepuff seemed fairly similar to his old House. Perhaps great castles think alike.

Five years ago, Bonabé decided to retire his position and return to his family in Louisiana. There, he and his wife and two adult children lived in the No Maj community, living just as if they were not wizards at all. He continued to find the ingenuity of those without magic fascinating. He found his mind sharpened without having to use magic to solve problems. He took up the mantle of repairman, doing home repair, fixing HVAC systems, and even some electronic repair as a hobby to fix various devices.

His retirement was short-lived, as a neighbor informed him that a bunch of “Brit tourists” were looking for him. They were actually representatives from Hogwarts, seeking out Bonabé for the position of Head of House. He was very reluctant to take on the position, being quite happy living in peace in the remote swamps. Yet, their need was pressing, citing the thefts of magical items and intrusion of a masked boy at the school. With great reluctance, he took on the job and made his way back to Scotland.

Fun fact: Bonabé’s name was supposed to be Barnabé (pronounced Barnaby), but his father’s accent was so thick, no one could tell what he was saying.
