To almost everyone that got to meet her, Nico had seemed an introverted girl. Opening up to others did not go well with her. She had been afraid of everything that had more than two pair of legs for the majority of her life. Those that knew of her, could often find her doodling somewhere quiet or listening to music when exploring lone paths. Little did anyone know that she could rather enjoy herself in private. Dancing to loud music or singing her heart out in an empty house. Under her bed, she used to hide a single important memento of her childhood: a giant shark plushie that she'd hug at night when she felt alone, and she often did.

The Shymane family hailed from London. An ordinary muggle family to any outsider. However, like many families, they had their quirks.

Angelique Forktail and Robert Shymane were simply a match made in heaven. They fell in love at the local aquarium where Miss Forktail worked. Her job as a mermaid to entertain kids didn't go unnoticed by the charming aquarium-window cleaner Robert. Many glances and smiles were exchanged throughout their weekly meetings and in time, they happily married and took their residence in a small house at the edge of London city. Not long after, they welcomed their first daughter. Nico. Though despite the seemingly perfect start to their lives, changes were bound to happen.
At the age of 6, Nico’s parents had noticed the girl’s fondness for drawing. She never really had any friends, or perhaps humans in general. She did create a bond with a neighbouring cat that often frequented in her backyard. Her mother mainly disapproved of her daughter’s actions, often advising her husband she should get out more. The girl’s father however, more than often let her spend time with the animal as he felt it to be a kindred spirit to his daughter’s character. As time progressed, Nico and the cat would seem best friends and she would draw him often. With each drawing finished, she always ran for her father. Telling him how the cat had acted, or what tricks she tried to have him perform. As loving as her father listened to his daughter’s tales, one day in particular marks Nico’s life. Her father had been amazed all morning after his daughter had shown him one drawing. One drawing, yet constantly moving. As he watched the cat on the sheet of paper roll from one side to the other, he realised his daughter had a “talent”.
5 years later, it would be due her father’s support that Nico accepted her invitation to Hogwarts.

Dhampir Backstory

Robert Shymane, Nico's father, was an ordinairy guy. Or was he..

Everyday he came to work to clean up the windows of the aquaria where his wife, Angelique Forktail, worked as a mermaid performer. She wans't a real mermaid, mind you. Angelique wore a bathing suit which closely resembled the features of a real mermaid. It's where her parents met and fell in love.

While her mother was a human with a passion for entertaining people, her father, was something else. He was a Dhampir.

Robert had come from a family that consisted out of Dhampirs who tried to adapt to human society. His great-grandfather Frederick Shymane, a vicious looking man with a pale skin which almost seemed see-through, had a heart of gold. He was a pure Vampire. No one is really sure what made him change his mind to live together with humans, in a peaceful way. He always avoided that question with a story and took the reason to his grave. Some say his wife, Rosaline, who died rather young, had something to do with it. Whenever Frederick or anyone said her name, he seemed to lose the glint of light in his eyes which made him such a pleasant and heartful person. He'd retreat to his bedroom and stay there for a long time.

Roberts father, Marcel Shymane, knew him very well and spent alot of his childhood time with his grandfather. He told Robert why it was important to respect humans and why living in peace with them was a bliss. For generations, Nico's father was raised with that idea and strongly believed in those ideals. Defenitely after he fell in love with the lovely Angelique Forktail. His father was proud to hear that his son married a human and kept their families new dhampir ideals alife.

Fitting in wasn't easy. They had to adapt. Working in a dark, not well lit, aquarium was perfect for Robert. He used make-up tools to mask his very pale, milk colored skin look full of life. He always wore a hat and lived of a strong diet of tomato juice. Yes, he did still have some urges to drink blood, yet he could easily put those desires at ease by eating blood-flavoured lolipops. They did the trick to soothe his cravings. His family had teached him ways to eat normal, regular human food instead of only human blood. It took some time to adapt but he made it.

Angelique knew he was a Dhampir as he once confessed to her during a make out session in the broomcloset at the back of his work facility. His make-up was smudged and his moonlight skin got exposed. Angelique accepted him for who and what he was and they grew closer...

Their only child, Nico, a small lovable girl, became the first female Dhampir in her family. She was blessed with ice blue eyes and lovely red locks. In her early years it was rather hard to contain her cravings for blood. But after a hard time of dieting on normal food, she adjusted rather well and can perfectly consume anything like a human would. Robert made sure Nico looked at her best at school by making her skin look alive and healthy. Angelique, her mother, made sure her make-up was water proof so it wouldn't come off that easily when she rubbed her face if she had an itch or when she cried. Even after all those efforts, Nico's times at school were rather tough as she got picked on alot. Mostly because they were afraid of her bloody tears that scared many children.
