Background

Birth:
Aoi Risa, the only daughter of Evangeline Wood and Sora Risa, was born in Stamford, UK, on May 19th, in the year 1991 AD. Her father, Sora, is a member of a prominent Japanese Family with a strong predilection toward tradition and family, with a little xenophobia thrown in there as well. As such, his affair with a western woman was not taken well by the family. However, due to Aoi appearing fully Japanese, the family was willing to take her in and allow Sora forgiveness on the condition he leaves Eva behind, never again contacting her.

Evangeline was a poor woman from London and found herself unable to care for her newborn daughter without the assistance of her father, and therefore had little choice but to let go of her child to Sora, an act which deeply broke the woman's heart. Sora granted her one last wish, allowing Eva to name their daughter, with the condition the name had to be Japanese, and the surname was not negotiable. This is why Aoi has a middle name despite the practice being nearly non-existent in Japan. Aoi would grow up totally unaware of her heritage or mother.

Childhood:
Aoi grew up in a traditionalist household. Her family was magical, yes, but they were Japanese first. That was the first and foremost priority. Aoi's Grandfather had served in the Second World War of Muggles and had witnessed the defeat of Japan to the Allies. Needless to say, he harbored no love for the West, or Aoi's mother, and thus Aoi herself. As a young girl, Aoi never knew why she faced such resentment from her Grandfather, believing herself fully Japanese, and strived to please him. She strove to achieve top marks at Mahoutokoro, living to bring honor to her family and their legacy. Her father did little to defend her from his own father's cruel degrading of her among other things done to the young girl. The culture of yielding to elders stayed his hand. Aoi's siblings told the truth of her, also avoided her and ostracized her. Upon reaching 12 Aoi started to lose hope that she could ever earn the favor of Grandfather. In tears, she begged her father for help, a reason, anything to explain how his loathing of her could be resolved. Sora Risa finally realized the cost of his cowardice and revealed to Aoi her heritage. Aoi was smart and knew something was different, and the revelation made it all click. But it broke her view upon the world. She realized she'd be nothing more than her blood to her Grandfather, no matter how "Japanese" she strove to be. Another consequence arose from the revelation. Aoi confronted her Grandfather on his resentment, causing the promise her father had made to be broken. Aoi and Sora were expelled from the family and struck from the great family tree, a mural on their ancestral home detailing the family back to the Tokugawa Shogunate. Sora and Aoi moved from Okayama to Kyoto, where Sora had found a job for himself. Aoi began taking English lessons in addition to attending school at Mahoutokoro. Sora had hired a woman(Daphne Wilson) from London to educate Aoi. Aoi would view her as her main parent, due to her father's frequent absences. Aoi picked up Miss Wilson's accent as well as manners and professionalism. Aoi would go on to graduate with top marks. After graduation, she accepted a job offer from the British Ministry of Magic to join their Witch Watcher division. Saying goodbye to Daphne, and on tense terms with her absent father, Aoi made her way to the UK.
