❝ Congratulations! I’m Prefect Gemma Farley, and I’m delighted to welcome you to SLYTHERIN HOUSE. Our emblem is the serpent, the wisest of creatures; our house colours are emerald green and silver, and our common room lies behind a concealed entrance down in the dungeons. As you’ll see, its windows look out into the depths of the Hogwarts lake. We often see the giant squid swooshing by – and sometimes more interesting creatures. We like to feel that our hangout has the aura of a mysterious, underwater shipwreck.

Now, there are a few things you should know about Slytherin – and a few you should forget.

Firstly, let’s dispel a few myths. You might have heard rumours about Slytherin house – that we’re all into the Dark Arts, and will only talk to you if your great-grandfather was a famous wizard, and rubbish like that. Well, you don’t want to believe everything you hear from competing houses. I’m not denying that we’ve produced our share of Dark wizards, but so have the other three houses – they just don’t like admitting it. And yes, we have traditionally tended to take students who come from long lines of witches and wizards, but nowadays you’ll find plenty of people in Slytherin house who have at least one Muggle parent.

Here’s a little-known fact that the other three houses don’t bring up much: Merlin was a Slytherin. Yes, Merlin himself, the most famous wizard in history! He learned all he knew in this very house! Do you want to follow in the footsteps of Merlin? Or would you rather sit at the old desk of that illustrious ex-Hufflepuff, Eglantine Puffett, inventor of the Self-Soaping Dishcloth?

I didn’t think so.

But that’s enough about what we’re not. Let’s talk about what we are, which is the coolest and edgiest house in this school. We play to win, because we care about the honour and traditions of Slytherin.

We also get respect from our fellow students. Yes, some of that respect might be tinged with fear, because of our Dark reputation, but you know what? It can be fun, having a reputation for walking on the wild side. Chuck out a few hints that you’ve got access to a whole library of curses, and see whether anyone feels like nicking your pencil case.

But we’re not bad people. We’re like our emblem, the snake: sleek, powerful, and frequently misunderstood.

For instance, we Slytherins look after our own – which is more than you can say for Ravenclaw. Apart from being the biggest bunch of swots you ever met, Ravenclaws are famous for clambering over each other to get good marks, whereas we Slytherins are brothers. The corridors of Hogwarts can throw up surprises for the unwary, and you’ll be glad you’ve got the Serpents on your side as you move around the school. As far as we’re concerned, once you’ve become a snake, you’re one of ours – one of the elite.

Because you know what Salazar Slytherin looked for in his chosen students? The seeds of greatness. You’ve been chosen by this house because you’ve got the potential to be great, in the true sense of the word. All right, you might see a couple of people hanging around the common room whom you might not think are destined for anything special. Well, keep that to yourself. If the Sorting Hat put them in here, there’s something great about them, and don’t you forget it.

And talking of people who aren’t destined for greatness, I haven’t mentioned the Gryffindors. Now, a lot of people say that Slytherins and Gryffindors represent two sides of the same coin. Personally, I think Gryffindors are nothing more than wannabe Slytherins. Mind you, some people say that Salazar Slytherin and Godric Gryffindor prized the same kinds of students, so perhaps we are more similar than we like to think. But that doesn’t mean that we cosy up with Gryffindors. They like beating us only slightly less than we like beating them.

A few more things you might need to know: our house ghost is the Bloody Baron. If you get on the right side of him he’ll sometimes agree to frighten people for you. Just don’t ask him how he got bloodstained; he doesn’t like it.

The password to the common room changes every fortnight. Keep an eye on the noticeboard. Never bring anyone from another house into our common room or tell them our password. No outsider has entered it for more than seven centuries.

Well, I think that’s all for now. I’m sure you’ll like our dormitories. We sleep in ancient four-posters with green silk hangings, and bedspreads embroidered with silver thread. Medieval tapestries depicting the adventures of famous Slytherins cover the walls, and silver lanterns hang from the ceilings. You’ll sleep well; it’s very soothing, listening to the lake water lapping against the windows at night. ❞

The proper owner of the aspen wand is often an accomplished duellist, or destined to be so, for the aspen wand is one of those particularly suited to martial magic. UNICORN HAIR→ Unicorn hair generally produces the most consistent magic, and is least subject to fluctuations and blockages. Wands with unicorn cores are generally the most difficult to turn to the Dark Arts. They are the most faithful of all wands, and usually remain strongly attached to their first owner, irrespective of whether he or she was an accomplished witch or wizard.

Minor disadvantages of unicorn hair are that they do not make the most powerful wands (although the wand wood may compensate) and that they are prone to melancholy if seriously mishandled, meaning that the hair may ‘die’ and need replacing.

China is not as glamourous as everyone chooses to believe. When you are born into poverty, there's not much you can do but hope and pray that you can get out of it. When you are born into the street life, it takes the combined efforts of your entire family to keep your head above water. Those who are born into privilege are luckier than they can ever imagine.

When you are born into magical China, things are even trickier. School is expensive and only for those with money to spare. Thus, most witches and wizards chose to educate their children at home, where it was far cheaper than sending them away for what essentially the entire year.

Charlie Huang never had spare change growing up. Every penny he ever worked for went straight to his parents, who in turn fed him and his six siblings. Living without spare money saved away was particularly dangerous, however, as it left next to nothing for medical emergencies. Using magic to cure human diseases was of course, risky, and even the Chinese apothecaries refused to attempt to cure these "devil curses".

Charlie's father's heavy smoking habit never helped ease their funds, either. By the time he was 18, all three of his older sisters had passed away from Hepatitis A, and his parents were desperate for their remaining sons to get out, by any means necessary.

The youngest brothers, Jodi and Kai, simply moved across the border to Hong Kong. Charlie's only older brother, Jackson, left for the elusive land of America, where he hoped to strike it rich. Charlie's last resort was school, where he shone through in math and English. He won a full-ride scholarship to a college in England, and he moved there shortly after.

In England, he received a proper education, and met Angel Ye, the gorgeously smart girl who sat behind him in his Economics class. Like him, she had run to Europe to escape the poverty and sickness consuming the poorer parts of China. It wasn't long before he fell in love with her, and they decided to get married three years later.

The Huangs' first child was an angelic girl they christened Celestine, named for the stars of which their beauty she rivaled. As a child, she smiled easily and laughed loudly, however unladylike her mother deemed it. Her grades were sky-high, and her magical potential even more so. It certainly seemed that she was a perfect child.

When she was eight, she begged her parents for a brother, a younger brother that she could dote upon and love. When she was nine, Elijah Huang was welcomed into the world, and she did indeed dote upon him, teaching him everything she knew about the world around them. Despite their nine-year age difference, they were close; despite Celestine going to Hogwarts, they were close.

At Hogwarts, Celestine was in what she believed was absolute heaven. She was sorted into Ravenclaw, where she was challenged to be better and to do well in school. She made many friends, excelled in her classes, and made the Quidditch team in her fifth year as a Chaser. Every week, she faithfully wrote home two separate letters- one, to her parents, in which she thanked them endlessly for giving her this opportunity and reporting back on her grades and social standing; the other, to her younger brother, with which she secretly sent sweets and drawings, pressed flowers and bits of needlework.

After she graduating with flying colors, she found a job with the Ministry of Magic. As tradition insisted of an unmarried woman, she stayed with her parents, helping to raise her younger brother to become the best person she could be. She watched as he struggled through making friends, as he struggled with acting as his true self.

The Huangs' second child was named by Celestine, and named for Elijah Wood, who had done so marvelously well in Lord of the Rings. He grew up surrounded by love radiating from his parents and his sister, in a happy home in a good neighborhood. There wasn't much more he could ask for, except maybe that cool new toy in the window.

His childhood was a simple one. He studied, learned to read, began to play sports. As he started school, he worked hard to make his parents proud, earning spectacular grades and playing football (or soccer, to you Americans) with the other students. His dedication to his studies rivaled even his sister's, and muscles began showing on his thin frame through his sports.

His friends, however, were abundant but distanced. He certainly had a friend group that he was comfortable with, but none of them had ever been invited over, never had the chance to meet Mr. and Mrs. Huang, never got to see Elijah's room. While Charlie and Angel worried, Celestine insisted that they not worry. After all, their baby boy was doing just fine- maybe he simply wanted to keep his home as his.

This seemed to be the case, and at home, Elijah began to get into model-making. He seemed to have an obsession with the landmarks of the world, the tourist-traps he absolutely refused to fall into. Instead, he recreated them from within the comfort of his own home, building the Taj Mahal out of paper or bending the Great Wall of China out of metal. It was an art he was highly proficient in, and one that the rest of his family would never even begin to understand.

Elijah watched his sister return to Hogwarts each fall year after year with a heavy heart, knowing he wouldn't see her again until winter. Her letters and small tokens helped, but he always missed her dearly when she was gone. He, himself, couldn't wait until he would get the chance to attend the school she spoke so highly of.

The day he received his letter was one like any other, where he was sitting at the dining table doing homework and drinking a steaming mug of tea. His mother had been there as he opened the envelope with shaking hands, and Celestine took him shopping in Diagon Alley, pointing out all the different sights in the little shopping hub.

He was eleven, now, and he was ready to face the real world.

    The bond between this father and his son is an uncomplicated one. There's a certain understanding that Elijah always gets the left side of the couch, that only his right-most bedroom window may be opened, and that the football in the closet is his and solely his. There have never been hard feelings between the two Huang men, as long as Elijah's grades stay acceptably high. He is a successful businessman, known mainly for his masterful negotiations and merciless destruction of rival businesses.

    Elijah loves his mother to pieces, and would gladly give the world to her. She understands her son in a way only mothers can, where she knows exactly which shade of black he wants his socks to be, and exactly the style of sweater he wants for his birthday. She doesn't pressure him to do much, except to honor his ancestors, heritage, and traditions. She is her husband's number one, his most trusted partner, and is just as prominent in the business community in her own right. However, she is known to be slightly kinder than her husband when driving rivals into bankruptcy.

    If there's one person Elijah adores above everyone else, it's his sister. The bond between the two is unbreakable, and she's like a second mother and a best friend all in one. The two know each other's favorite flavor of ice cream, favorite radio station, and preferred pens in the junk drawer in their father's study. She currently works for the Ministry of Magic, but is expected to take over the family's company when she is older.

001. Best + Bitter = Better*- Elijah has always had a close relationship with his golden retriever, Praelia. A mistake and misdiagnosis by his father, however, will ultimately change who he his, and who he chooses to become close to.

Anti-Social Social Club 2.0- Elijah has always considered himself to be good with social interactions, dealing with other people through an entirely fake persona, and overall, being a good 'popular' kid. An incident that becomes too personal, however, scares him into realizing that he might not suited for this whole 'friendship' idea, after all.

    ➥ Guardian→ Every Chinese citizen knows that their guardian watches over them. Depending on the year which you were born, you are assigned an ancient Chinese emperor to watch over you and act as your guardian angel. Elijah has a jade carving of his guardian, which he wears around his neck under his shirt.
    ➥ Models→ His models are his prized possessions. Kept on a bookshelf in his bedroom, models made of paper, wood, and metal lines the shelves, and are of different things that he's made of the course of his childhood. No one but his family has ever seen them.
