Lilyanabell Lumen, called Lily by most and Piddle (the dawdle kind, mind you!) by the closest, was born in 2008 to Clara and Cole Lumen in a little village called Lyre by Mallow, Ireland. Due to some birth complications, she ended up being diagnosed with paraplegia when she was a baby. After a year of work, she was partially cured of the disability, but remains unable to support her own weight on her feet without aid. But she wasn't going to let that slow her down then, and is even more determined not to now.

Her Pureblood mother ended up dying in childbirth with her little sister when she was three and a half, and her Muggleborn father got his sister to come and take care of the children while he went to work. But his sister was no real replacement for the dead mother, and the children didn't like her very much. She, in turn, didn't like them. There was not to be a single magical word uttered in the house, or else. So the Lumen kids grew up without any knowledge that magic existed at all, and living in such a small village, there weren't many other kids to tell them about it.

One day, when she turned 5, Lily's father took her into a room that she'd never been in before, her mother's secret room. He explained that he thought that Clara would be pleased to see Lily take up her passions, and luckily, that was exactly what happened. It had to be kept secret from her aunt, of course, but that could be arranged by sneaking there at night. Hours were spent pouring over her mother's small library and notebooks, and examining intricate sketches and drawings she'd find tucked away in little corners. Before anyone could be quite sure what happened, she'd found the forbidden word. Magic.

And just like that, her aunt was gone. Ten year old Lily and her two siblings Matthew and Susanna were left to essentially their own devices. They'd always been educated at home, by their aunt. But now Lily found herself teaching herself out of her mother's books, and teaching her siblings too. Her father seemed to become more and more distant as he struggled to support the family, until one day on her eleventh birthday, something changed. She got a letter from a magic school, saying that she could go there.

So, six months later, Lily found herself at Hogwarts with a satchel on her shoulder full of funny little magic things, two crutches under her arms to let her walk, and amongst one of the things she'd only ever heard of in stories. Other children.

Clara Lumen - Her deceased Pureblood mother, who showed her that nobody defines you but you
Cole Lumen - Her father, who isn't around much since he's a single deaf parent trying to support the family
Matthew Lumen - Her deaf brother who does most of the housekeeping and hates learning
Susanna Lumen - Her deaf sister, who they assume is a Squib and is always really rude and somewhat violent to Lily
Willow - The family's pet Crup, originally named by their mother, seems to like Lily the best

James Lachoneus - A boy she knew from the Muggle world, who she used to go get ice cream with. 
Cameron Smith - A rather mischievous boy who tried to make her into a master of the art of pranks
Emmeline Jones - A girl who also struggled with History of Magic, and requested a study partner
Thea Knott - A friendly girl she met in Flourish and Blotts, who shares her love of reading
Blaire Newton - A girl she met on the Hogwarts Express who seems to be fairly friendly so far
