Iona Quincy had gone to Canada to study, not to start a family. She had always been dedicated to science, to learning, and when she'd gotten acceptance to a University in the capital city of Canada she hadn't hesitated to go. Born and raised in Ireland Iona hadn't traveled much in her life, even the thought of living a few years somewhere else had her delighted. It was during the third year since she'd moved that she met Andrew. He had sat beside her during one of their shared lectures and she'd gotten to know him through quiet laughter and whispers behind the professor's back. She wouldn't say she was in love, she wasn't really, but within the year she was pregnant. Honestly, that was the moment they started falling apart. Andrew had grown up without his father around, in turn he was insistent that he be there to help her raise their child. They were arguing before she was even born; both had strong opinions and neither were familiar with backing down. It started with her name. Andrew had always, whenever he imagined having a daughter, naming her after his mother: Adelaide. On the other hand, Iona liked the name Jolene and didn't have an interest in giving it up. (Eventually they compromised on two first names, a choice they both regretted after realizing they saw how long it was on her birth certificate.)

Their relationship didn't get better after Adelaide-Jolene was born. Neither wanted to give up their schooling but they could hardly take care of an infant when they both spent full days in classes. Stubborn as she may be, Iona was the one to give in this time; she had been raised on the importance of family and as much as she loved learning she loved her daughter more.

AJ got a brother when she was two. The arguing didn't stop. She was six when she lost her mother.

Andrew didn't know how to raise a child, much less two of them. In his own way, he did try, he didn't want them to feel lonely but he couldn't fix it. He couldn't. So he told them they were going on a vacation to visit their grandparents, Iona's parents were always delighted to have them, and when he stepped out for a smoke he didn't come back.

AJ let her grandparents lie to her little brother but she wouldn't let them lie to her. She knew he left, that he had no intention of coming back. Luckily her granda had always known how to distract her, and her maimeó was brilliant at getting the young girl's mind going. The hurt didn't go away, being abandoned wasn't something a child could move past so easily, it did get better though. She had her little brother, Granda taught her about the stars, Maimeó taught her about sciences. While there might've been some instances before, the first time AJ accidentally used magic was on the night of her eighth birthday; the first one without either of her parents. She had made it through the day just fine, but when she went to bed the feelings were overwhelming. Anger at her father for leaving, grief for her mum's death, despair for knowing she would never get to just be with her mother, fear, sadness, desperation, it was all too much- and then she was looking at her mother's face. Her smile. And AJ knew it wasn't real, she knew it, it was like a picture had formed in front of her, pulled from her own memories... in an instant it appeared and in an instant it was gone.

Admittedly, the small instances of magic that followed weren't as much of a surprise to her grandparents as one might think. Oh, they were muggles, that was certain, but they were Pagan as well. They had been raised on old Irish stories of Fae and Elves, they were raised to respect that the world was more than they may know. Of course, they were also scientists and though they had many theories none had led to the conclusion that an owl would deliver a letter of acceptance to their granddaughter from a school of magic. Surprises were always going to be a part of life, they supposed.
