Kalani is an twelve year old girl from Maika'i, Hawaii. She's just under average at 4'5", and skinny but healthy at 64lbs, though by the end of seventh year she'll be one of the tallest girls in the year. Most of her height comes from her legs, as they're sort of freakishly long and are only going to get longer as she grows. Her long legs come in handy for athletics like track and her body is toned from a large selection of sports that she enjoys. Her skin is a mix of the tan of a full-blood Hawaiian and the pastiness from her dad's side, so she sits at a warm beige that tans very easily. She has her mothers hair: thick, wavy and pitch black, cut into a bob that skims her shoulders with longer bangs. She parts her hair to her right. She has watery grey eyes that she gets from her dad. Her teeth are somewhat crooked, maybe enough to get braces.

She always wears an elastic bracelet with "I AM DEAF" written on red and gold beads, though it's far from the only bracelet on her skinny little wrists; if she was to put all her bracelets on one arm, it would come right up to her elbow. Some of her other bracelets have “KALANI ANDERSON”, "GRYFFINDOR", "LIP READER", "I AM MUTE", "BSL", etcetera, and she usually wears them on her left arm as her right is her dominant hand.

Her clothes are all either too big or too small for her. Nothing ever seems to fit quite right. Even her Hogwarts uniform is big enough to last her at least until third year. Her clothes have two settings: too plain or too flashy. Too plain might consist of a white t-shirt and black loose jeans. Too flashy might be a bright blouse and a maxi skirt that's definitely got neon in it. However, her wardrobe very rarely gets her down. Her shoes are battered, dirty and definitely second hand, but that doesn't stop her from kicking a ball around in them. Her favourite type of shoe is flip flop - and yes, she will still play football in them.

Even if she is silent, Kalani is explosive. She's peppy, excitable and playful, though often impatient and inconsiderate of people that can't keep up with her. Her emotions and feelings always seem to be cranked up to one hundred. She's very impulsive, hyperactive, and finds it nearly impossible to put her entire attention on anything, apart from sports. She loves to play games and is one of the best players in physical education classes, as her extra energy really works to her advantage where her lack of hearing might fail her in team games.

Adding together her deafness and being unable to pay attention for very long has lead to a very difficult school career for Kalani. She's not predicted to graduate with very high grades, but she'll keel over and die before she lets that get her down.

As a lip reader, Kalani has become very acquainted with faces. This has lead her to an acute knowledge of facial expressions, which has made her into a sympathetic person who can read expressions and tone well and respond appropriately.

She's a very carefree girl, which is most noticeable if you ask her about her deafness. She's not sensitive about the subject and actually seems eager to talk about it. She doesn't really know what she's 'missing out on'; she's never heard in her life, so she's not missing out on much as far as she's aware. However, she can become more self conscious of her deafness when in a large social situation with a lot of people she doesn't know, and will usually try and find a way to slip the truth into the large crowd; this is mainly because she hates to have to explain over and over again.

She's a naturally curious girl. She's the one in the mystery novel that gets the first idea that something's wrong. Or, she's the one in the horror film who moves out of the hiding place first and gets themselves killed. You win some, you lose some.

Though usually brave, full of courage, and fearless, one thing fills Kalani with such great dread and terror that she can do nothing but flee. Fighting. When there is sign of a physical fight, or a verbal fight is looking like it will escalate, Kalani is quick to leave. This stretches even to magic fighting, where Kalani avoids duelling as much as she can. Though, if she was to get into a scrap you would see that she is a remarkable fighter, able to defend herself against people twice her size.

Kalani Anderson is a half-Hawaiian, half English half-blood. Her muggle-born mother, Kaimana Anderson, dropped out of Ilvermorny at the age of sixteen, returned home to Maika'i and became a waitress. Her half-blood father transferred from Hogwarts to Ilvermorny at the age of sixteen when his father's work brought him to Maika'i, and then dropped out at seventeen when his father passed away in a car accident in order to look after his mother. He became a barber. Shortly after Kalani's birth, his mother returned to her hometown in Blackpool, England.

Kalani was born deaf due to her mother contracting CMV during pregnancy, but her parents were dedicated to making her life just the same as any other little girl's. However, after thorough research it was evident that if they wanted to help her hear, then they would need money that they simply didn't have. Instead, they taught Kalani sign language - Hawaiian, American and British - and how to lip read, and vowed that one day, they'd send her to Hogwarts, where her father originally went. They desperately wanted her to get the best shot she could get, and that's what Hogwarts could provide.

At a young age, she noticed that a lot of people in her town didn't seem to like her or her parents; muttering to one another as they passed, glaring and sneering, occasionally even shouting at them in the street. If Kalani asked, her parents wouldn't ever answer. She's figured it out now, but she holds the secret tight to her in fear that the discrimination will follow her to Hogwarts. The abuse never let up, and the family couldn't do much but grin and bear it.

When she turned five, Kalani started to attend a summer camp with her parents. The summer camp was specifically for children with special needs and their parents to have fun and learn how best to deal with their conditions outside of the camp. At this camp she made the best friends of her life, who have helped her through the toughest times without ever being annoyed about having to make extra lengths to talk to her. If she can make friends even half as good as them at Hogwarts, then she'll be in good company.

On her eleventh birthday, Kalani's letter came. All her life, she'd knew that her parents wanted her to go to Hogwarts, but she'd never been pleased about it. She didn't want to be miles and miles away from her parents and her friends, and she knew that owl post would take far longer to travel. At the same time, she knows that Hogwarts is her best chance at a fresh start. At the beginning of the summer, she moved to London to live with her aunt, and to get her adjusted to UK life, and her aunt was the lady to see her off at Kings Cross Station.
