Edric has hazel eyes and light skin with few freckles that tans slowly but isn't prone to sunburn. He has thick, brown hair that he started to grow out a bit over the summer, turning it into a shaggy mop that reaches to his ears. Until he enrolled at Hogwarts he was always a bit on the shorter side of average, but he hit a growth spurt during the last few months of the school year and is now firmly in the middle of the pack considering his height and weight. His build is slim and athletic, though he lacks the muscle to be strong.

Edric comes from an old Welsh wizarding family that has been breeding Hippogriffs for since the fifteen hundreds. The Banes family consisted always of pure-bloods and the occasional half-blood, as they were never hardliners when it came to blood purity. His mother Marianne comes from the Wolff family, who are a German family who are renown equestrians: they breed and ride Aethonans and Granians.

He grew up in the Banes family estate near the Welsh muggle town of Blaenau Ffestiniog. The muggles there think that his family is breeding goats - which they indeed do, as they use their meat (among other things) to feed the Hippogriffs. He met the occasional muggle when roaming around the edges of the family property, but never made friends with any muggle children. To him, they are inconsequential and remain something that he doesn't understand nor has the urge to get familiar with.

Edric has two older brothers, Adair and Harold, who are three and four and a half years older than him respectively. They mostly stick together and, like their father and mother, view Edric as the baby of the family. They tease him about being rather small and don't trust him to do important things on his own.

With the isolated location of the estate, he didn't meet many outsiders during his youth. There was the occasional other magical child that came by on a visit with their parents, but those were usually the age of his brothers and didn't spare much attention on the youngest of the siblings.

Edric's youth, therefore, was filled with many a Hippogriff and regular visits to his mother's family in Germany. Those are his most cherished memories, as they and his aunt Juliana - that he is named for - really sparked his interest in becoming a winged horse rider.

His first year of school was an eventful one for Edric. Being in Slytherin freed him of having to deal with his obnoxious brothers constantly and he thrived when allowed to be himself without so much interference from his family. He didn't manage to establish a lasting friendship with any of his dorm mates, even though he wished to make friends there, but instead found other fellow Slytherins who he came to really like. There's the boy he met in library, Khris, with whom he shares a love for heroes and fantasy stories, the incredibly smart Alma who was the only student to know his family so far, Marcia, the girl who knows everything about flowers and is one of the most normal people Edric met in Hogwarts so far, and the happy, good-natured Maisy who he knocked over by accident in the Slytherin Common Room.

He gained some more confidence when he tried out for the Slytherin Quidditch Team, but the trials were postponed by the Professors and Edric's aspiring Hogwarts Quidditch career ended before it had begun. Still, he longs to be in the sky more often and hopes to make the team in his second school year. It shouldn't be, then, and so he focused his attention on all the classes they had, studying hard to have good grades.

There were breaks from all the study sessions of course, namely in big events like the Ball and the Slytherin House Cup party, which he was especially proud of because he'd been one of the best students and helped win the cup for their house. Still, the whole adventure on the Great Lake had been scary, not to mention that he'd shared a boat with a terrified Marcia, who hates bodies of water. The ordeal made their friendship stronger, but Edric would rather avoid scenes like that in the future, where his friends are scared or hurt. The year was terrible in that regard, as Marcia spent the last days of school in the hospital wing after the masked guy had attacked her and a group of other students. He'd been made Prefect just a few days before the event, but after what transpired at the end of the year he had already made him reconsider if he was the right guy for the position.

Edric had opted to stay in Hogwarts a little longer despite that year, taking part in the Summer Camp. The people in his Cabin, however, weren't all friendly, and after a night of horrors, he left school in August with a profound dislike for Professor Valtome to spent the rest of his summer with his hippogriff friends.

His Second Year didn't start all that well for Edric. Not only had his older brother Harry turned into a ladies' man over the summer, but he also was forced to assign his first detention in the first week of the school year. It didn't go all that well. Turned out that Edric really was too nice a boy and was poor at handling the stress of supervising two arguing first year girls. He stepped down from the Prefect position soon after, to the disappointment of his father.

Neirin is the patriarch of the Banes family. He loves his family deeply, especially his children, and wants to them to have whatever it takes to be happy. Having three boys he thought he'd have it easy with them, but that's less and less the case. Adair is choosing a path that might lead him away from the family, Harry is turning into a rebel who ignore his parents on purpose and Edric seems to be from an entirely different cut than his brothers.
As a father he is concerned for all of them, but still is more worried about Edric than Harry, as his youngest son is a dreamer. The Banes' always have been hands-on people and Neirin knows that his wife and mother are right when they tell him that the boy has to find his own way, but he feels like he can't connect all that much too Edric anymore, who is studious, likes to read books and has started to tell about this and that muggle thing his friends showed him.

Marianne left her family to be with a man in another country, with a completely different language and culture than her own. She is a very open and honest person and has no problem at all getting to know new people or new environments. Her family let her chose her own path and he wants to do the same to her own children, which is why she is always encouraging Edric to pursue his interests.
During Edric's first year at Hogwarts Marianne had her mind mostly on the baby of the family, but as the year progressed he made friends, got exceptional grades in most subjects, took part in the Quidditch Try-Outs and even stayed at the Summercamp despite all of his friends going home to their families. Her youngest is doing fine, and she now realizes that she focused too much on the wrong son: Harry doesn't care for school at all, mostly ignores his mother and managed to chase off the nice, level-headed girlfriend he introduced them to.

Adair is the oldest son and possible heir of the family. There are 4.5 years between him and Edric and it shows, as "Eddy" just started school while Adair will be done in two years. He had a sharp eye on Edric in his first year, but has relaxed a good deal after he's seen that his little brother does quite well at school without anyone's help and even made some good friends.
Since he met a magical veterinarian when visiting the family in Germany over the summer holidays Adair has found his dream job. He has a talent for Herbology and the handling of magical creatures but needs good grades in other subjects – namely Potions – too, to be accepted for an apprenticeship, and therefore decided to focus on his studies. He dropped the Duelling Club and spends less time with their brother Harry, who is otherwise occupied anyway.

Harry looks a lot like their father and is as besotted with the family Hippogriffs as he is. He has problems understanding some of Edric's interests, especially in books, but hopes that this "phase" will be over soon. At the moment he thinks that "Eddy" needs to be kept away from anything too dangerous least the hurt himself, and wishes that his little brother will grow up soon so they can work with the Hippogriffs together.
Adair's sudden shift in priorities baffles Harry, who – despite being in his OWL year – can't be bothered with studying at all. He only cares about the Duelling Club and pretty girls. His first girlfriend, a pretty, smart Ravenclaw girl, broke up with him at the end of the summer break because she thinks him too immature. The accusation hit Harry more than he admits, but there are more beautiful girls in Hogwarts so he rather focuses his attention on them than reflect on his behavior.

Morgan was born in the city, but was never at peace until she discovered the quiet beauty of the Welsh Highlands. She has many stories from her adventurous youth to tell, and Edric is the most likely to listen to her. From all of the family members she is the only one who truly realizes that he needs to see the world to grow, including its evils.

Juliana loves nothing more than her winged horses. They are her passion, her life even, and she takes every opportunity she has to show it to Edric, who stuffs himself with it like a starving child. She sees his potential and encourages it because she truly thinks that he could be an exceptional rider.

His mother and aunt have three cousins, one of which (Simone) married into an Italian winged horse breeding family. The other two - Johannes and Andreas - both married, and Andreas has two daughters and a son, who are fifteen, twelve and ten years older than Edric. He doesn't see them as often as his aunt however, as they are the ones in charge of the breeding of the Granians while Juliana is the rider of the family.
