History

Howard White’s life began just as many Muggleborn wizards do, ignorant of the fact that magic even existed. Growing up as an only child, he lived a very Muggle life. His family was poor but what they lacked in money they more than made up for in love and support of one another. The years would drift by and the family would grow. Unbeknownst them, something was awakening within young Howard.

This of course would be the first signs of magic. For years they shrugged it off as just weird circumstances or superstition, but come his eleventh birthday they would come to know the truth. Howard White Jr. was a wizard. It would come as a shock for the poor White family, especially for Howard Sr. The fact that his one and only son, his pride and joy, was different. That he would have to be shipped away to some hidden school in the highlands of Scotland to be trained how to use this bizarre and scary gift. It was almost too much for the man, but together with his wife, they would rally around their son and support him through this tough transition.

Howard’s first year at Hogwarts would seemingly go well. The truth was that he was terrified. Afraid of what it meant for his life to be a wizard and to be apart of the magical community. It was scary and confusing for the eleven year old to be ripped from his family, community and friends. Told that he was different and that he no longer belonged to the life he once loved, but he would press it down. To shield himself from the world he would wear a mask. No, not the one that you buy at a shop, but one of his own making. He would flash the fake smiles at both teacher and student alike. When asked how he was doing he would lie, everything’s great. Howard would strive to to well in class and take part in all of the social events Hogwarts had to offer. So, these false actions and lies would keep the world from knowing the truth. That on the inside, Howard was scared and resentful. These feelings would soon grow to anger and as he kept pushing further and further down, soon it would turn to rage.

Howard was not the only person that was changing. As he visited home between his first and second year, it became obvious that his father had changed as well. His marriage to Dawn White was slowly crumbling. A rift had grown between them as Howard Sr struggled with the fact that his boy was gone, swept away to some world of make belief. Dawn would retreat inside herself, unable to bear that her family was falling apart. To cope, he took to the bottle. You see, the two were not so different as fear and anger fueled their lives. Tragically, instead of coming together to deal with heartache and pain that this newfound life had brought them, they would push each other further and further away.

At first everyone would would do their best to pretend that nothing was different. A last ditch effort to pretend that things were the same as they were before. Back when they were happy and everything was normal. It wouldn’t take but a week before it all came crumbling down.

Howard could see the look in his father’s eye when he looked at him, especially with the more he drank. With eyes that used to beam with love and pride for him had now grown dark with fear and resentment. The very same feelings that coursed through his own body, but why? Howard Jr hadn’t asked for this! He hated it, wanted it stripped from his body. Yet the man he needed most would shun him for it. Not only was he told that he could no longer live a Muggle, that he was being forced into a community that he did not want, but even now, his family rejected him for what he was. Like a match to a pool of gasoline, the situation became explosive.

For the remainder of the summer, Howard would take to the streets to avoid his family. What little time at home was spent under the dominating presence of his father. When it came time to return to Hogwarts, Howard Jr was more than willing.

His second year at Hogwarts wouldn’t go nearly as well as his first. Slowly over time he lost the ability to hide his anger and pain. Gone were the fake smiles and empty actions and with them went his friends and relationships as his rage grew stronger. He vowed to himself that he would find his own path in life. Not the one that his family had laid out for him or the one the people in the magical community were trying to force on him. No, Howard would do whatever it took to make his own way and a dark path it would be.

Near the end of his second year, Howard would get everything he was looking for. There would be a chance meeting with the Hags. Preying off his desire for power, they would strike a wicked deal with the boy. Not long after that, his life would change forever. On the very night of the annual Blossom Ball, Howard would be attacked. Transformed from human to Dhampir. His humanity being the price he would pay for dealing with such vile creatures.

As he struggled with his new nature, Howard knew one thing for sure. His Muggle life was forever gone. He wrote to his mother, to tell her what had happened. She at least deserved that much. Her response would be simple. I love you son, but do not return. So, Howard would stay at Hogwarts and enter his third year. He turned inwards as he learned to cope with being a Dhampir, rarely ever socializing or even speaking with his peers. Into the shadows he would slip and there he was content to stay. Well, until the school decided to force the children to go home. Repeated attacks at Hogwarts forced their hand. Howard wouldn’t know it yet, but this decision would again change the course of his life. A summer to remember for sure.
