Leonie Scheinberg, Professor of DADA
LEONIE SIGRID SCHEINBERG

Leonie Sigrid Scheinberg was born on the thirtieth of June in the year of 1988. She was born to a Veela mother and a Wizard father, making her a half-Veela. She doesn’t enjoy the fact that this sets her apart from other people, nor that people would be drawn to her because of it. She has no siblings, and is low on friends. Preferring to stay alone made Leonie quite well-known for being antisocial.

Growing up in the Scheinberg household wasn’t all too easy. They were a rich and prosperous family, and that made it so that almost everyone in the European wizarding world knew who they were. This was due to Leonie’s father, Norm’s, success in life. He was a very active figure in Germany’s Ministry of Magic, and was even close to securing the Minister of Magic position for himself. This meant that while Leonie was a child, her mother and nanny had trained her to become a well-behaved and respectable child. One of the few who go by the ‘children are seen and not heard’ analogy. This didn’t bother Leonie at first - she was a fan of dressing up in fancy clothing and being on her best behaviour. Naturally, people fawned over the cuteness that the girl acquired. But just as all things are good, things are meant to go wrong. When Leonie was eleven and had been accepted into Durmstrang Institute, a wizarding school in northern Norway. It was quite away from home, and that could be why things changed.

The education in the school was very different from what Leonie expected. The school was definitely more hardcore than her other choices, she realized when she got there. She sincerely doubted that this was the school for her, but once she had settled into the flow of things and started on work, she got far more comfortable. She excelled in Transfiguration, Dark Arts, and Defense Against the Dark Arts, finding herself being far more talented with magic than she had hoped to be. Of course, her parents had hoped for it and were overjoyed to hear of Leonie’s success. The fact that her father was proud of her made Leonie strive to be the best student that Durmstrang had ever seen.

This was easier said than done. Leonie was forced to dedicate a lot of her time to studies, making it almost impossible for her to socialize. In her fourth year, she had worked so hard that her Transfiguration professor, Sergei Yornikovych at the time, offered her the chance to become an Animagus. At first, she was against it. She didn’t want to go through the process and risk being partly-transfigured. It took some convincing from her parents, but by fifth year she had agreed to the offer of learning how to become an Animagus. There were lots of late afternoon/evening sessions that Leonie spent with Professor Yornikovych, but by the time sixth year rolled around, she had successfully transformed into a hippogriff - twice. It was a surprise that her patronus was such a rarity, and it was even more of a surprise when she had turned into one. It was definitely unusual for her, and she didn’t like it all that much at first, but after a good amount of time she had developed a liking to the skill.

When Leonie graduated, it wasn’t a surprise what she decided to do with her life. She had packed up her things in Berlin after she received a job offer at the British Ministry of Magic, much to her father’s distaste. He would have much rathered her stay and work alongside him, but he would also be lying if he said he was not proud of his daughter for following in his footsteps. She entered the Ministry as an Auror, excited to begin on her life.

Time flew by, and in no time Leonie had received a promotion. Of sorts. More like, she moved from the Magical Law Enforcement department to the Department of Mysteries. The Minister of Magic at the time had enough faith and trust in her to put her there. Swearing to secrecy was a difficulty for Leonie, as she liked to share just about anything with her family. Though it was something she had to do, and she would rather be helping a more important cause than continue on a path that her father had set her on. She believed that she had to create her own course in life.

One day, in the year of 2014, Leonie was on a job order. There were weird happenings going on in London, and she was to investigate it. What she didn’t expect was to run into an Obscurial, which was what a young wizard or witch developed as a result of their magic being suppressed through psychological or physical abuse. It is a dark parasitical magical force, known as an Obscurus. In a fit of rage, it attacked Leonie, taking the vision from her right eye and leaving scars in its place. Spreading across her cheek and forehead, they would remain for the rest of her life. She was lucky that someone was able to intervene, unfortunately having to kill the Obscurial, having no way to contain it.

It wasn’t until when she woke up in St. Mungo’s that Leonie learned who her savior was. That being her Transfiguration professor, Sergei Yornikovych. She was surprised, even a little confused, that someone she knew had been around at the time. She was incredibly lucky in that sense. Something in her told her that she should owe him her life, but since he was nowhere in sight, she would have to give him her thanks later.

Leonie opted for a glass eye over the choice of an eyepatch, which definitely took more getting used to than she hoped for. It wasn’t the same colour as her other eye, instead a greyish-white colour, contrasting brightly with the blueness of her other eye. It took a lot of fighting on Leonie’s behalf when her parents were notified of her accident. They wanted her to come home for a while, but she wanted to just go back to work. Which she did, after potentially damaging the relationship between her and her parents. Even though she had always aimed to please them, this was one of the rare moments where she thought of what she wanted instead.

Her line of work in the Department of Mysteries was no longer, though. She was transferred back to the Magical Law Enforcement department as a part of the Wizengamot parliament and on the side, as an Auror. She was definitely disappointed with this position change, but accepted it nonetheless. She kept in mind that if she proved she was absolutely fine, then she would be able to resume her position in the Department of Mysteries. This was quite the opposite though, as the Minister of Magic didn’t want her to be put in any more danger than she needed to be in.

Leonie worked away for years until she got another offer for a job. At this time, Gerald DeMarcus had become the Minister of Magic, and was actually the one to offer her the opportunity. The Defense Against the Dark Arts professor at Hogwarts was no longer to continue his employment, and the school needed somebody to fill in. Having plenty of experience with the Dark Arts and Defense Against them, Leonie was glad to accept the offer. Especially at the mentioning of potential danger.

Familial

Norm Edward Scheinberg is Leonie's biological father. He is employed as the German Minister of Magic, and is a very successful wizard. He is the reason that the Scheinberg name is so well-off, and Leonie looks up to him as though he is her idol - and he is just that. It is safe to say that without Norm, Leonie wouldn't be the person she is to this day.

Janine Marina Scheinberg
is Leonie's biological mother. She is the one who taught Leonie all of the "proper" etiquette, and mannerisms, and is probably why Leonie is so cold nowadays. She taught Leonie the ways of the world, and she was not kind with it. A better word to describe it would be harsh. She is one of the reasons Leonie is glad to be away from Berlin.

Platonic

Sergei Yornikovych is a very close friend to Leonie. The man had taught her when she was a scholar, and once she had graduated and moved on with life, he had saved her from the wrath of an Obscurial. Ever since, she's happily been a thorn in his side. The two are very close, in Leonie's opinion, and she feels as though she owes him her life.

Sorrel Wright and Leonie met when the German woman had killed her plant, lacking the ability to water it. They've had a few encounters, though since the last where Leonie had been fired from her Ministry job, she's felt a little insecure around the Herbology professor. The thought of it being any more than the fact of her almost seeing her cry never comes to mind - all Leonie knows is that they are not friends, yet not enemies.

Romantic

Artyom Yornikovych was a love that was lost. Artyom and Leonie met in Durmstrang, and it happened quickly, but Leonie completely and utterly fell for him. They were set to be married when he passed away. It was an event Leonie would never be able to forgive herself for, nor live down.

Sebastián Cazarez seems to be getting a hold of Leonie's heart strings, and she's finding herself liking him more and more as time goes on. Surely, it can't be anything more serious than really good friends. But all of a sudden, Leonie's not so sure herself.
