Juniper has always considered herself quite average-looking, but she is, admittedly, rather pretty for an eleven-year-old. Her features have a certain angelic, doll-like softness to them, not having grown out of her “baby face” yet; Juniper’s loveliness is like a rosebud, with the potential to be beautiful someday while being pretty by itself.

With long legs and a naturally thin figure, she finds that she’s always a few centimetres taller than her classmates. Her thick hair, wavy in texture and mid-back in length, is so black that it shines blue, and is typically worn in a simple ponytail or held back with a headband. She has no blemishes or scars of any kind, and despite being fairly pale, she tends to tan rather than burn.

At this point, Juniper doesn’t exactly know what her “fashion sense” is yet, but she tends to opt for the more casual outfits rather than formal clothing. There is no specific colour scheme she sticks to, meaning the colour of her clothes can range from pastel pink to electric blue to dark grey, and as she grew up in a Muggle environment, her wardrobe consists of mostly Muggle clothing items. Despite her casual clothing choices, Juniper always looks fairly put together for a child – never a hair out of place or a snag in her sweater.

Her resting expression is hard to describe; depending on her mood, it’ll be somewhere in between thoughtful and indifferent, making her not entirely approachable but not exactly terrifying either. Brown, almond-shaped eyes are always watching, observing her surroundings and peers, not so much piercing or judging them, but simply analysing with a calm reservedness.

Gifted with a deeply contemplative mind, Juniper may appear calm on the outside, but her mind is a constant whirlwind of thoughts and ideas. She prefers to be left alone to her own devices, as she finds that time spent by herself can be a whole lot more interesting than socialising.

Despite being wickedly clever and extremely witty, most people will only ever see the quiet side of her. Occasionally her sarcasm will pop up randomly, taking her peers by surprise, but usually Juniper saves it for specific people – playfully with her immediate family and closest circle of friends. Don’t offend her or push her buttons too many times, either, because when Juniper is truly worked up, her calmness vanishes and you’ll get one hell of a tongue lashing, peppered with carefully chosen insults and scathingly accurate observations.

“People watching”, as she calls it, is one of her favourite pastimes. Juniper’s watchful brown eyes don’t miss a thing, and she’s particularly good at picking up flaws and imperfections… especially when it comes to her own. Perfectionism paired with overthinking is not a good combination, and this is one of the instances where her highly critical mind is more of a hinderance than a help.

That’s why she reacts so politely when approached by unfamiliar faces, why most of her peers see her as amiable despite her lonely reputation. Juniper cares about what others think of her more than she will ever admit or realise. However, she always puts some distance between herself and the other party, her mistrustful nature almost always overpowering her desire for friends. Fearful of being betrayed or acting too vulnerable, Juniper is a hard person to get close to. It’s all worth it in the end, though – once you manage to win her trust, you’ll find yourself a steady, loyal friend who’ll stick by you through thick and thin.

Juniper’s ambitious too, with big dreams and even bigger plans. It’s a trait that no one can tell from a mere conversation, as the secretive girl isn’t one to advertise her thoughts. She’s ruthless, for sure, but not outwardly, sneakily destroying her enemies and making sacrifices, quietly yet quickly moving towards her goal.

PARENTS

Juniper’s father, Eugene Yu, was born into a middle class family in Beijing, China, and lived a fairly normal childhood. Clever and ambitious, Eugene showed great promise in school early on. His family simply didn’t have enough money to support him entirely, so he relied purely on scholarships to get him through high school, university, and medical school, eventually becoming a cardiothoracic surgeon.

Her mother’s story is a lot more complicated, and one that hasn’t been completely told to anyone else yet. Madeline Yu comes from the prestigious pureblood family of Zhang, and was born in Shenzhen, China. Intelligent and beautiful, she would have been the perfect daughter if it wasn’t for the fact that she had never shown any signs of magic, and never would. Her family did not cast her out upon the discovery that Madeline was a Squib, but she often wished that they had, for her life in Shenzhen was a miserable one. The young girl was often subject to cruel, biting remarks from visitors. She had only one friend: a pureblood boy named Nathaniel Xia who had taken pity on her, and they were a team from the beginning. However, Nathaniel would later betray a twenty-five-year-old Madeline by humiliating her in front of a group of his pureblood friends, causing her to run away from home and move to Beijing to start afresh as a Muggle dressmaker.

Four years later, Eugene and Madeline met in the bar across the road from the hospital on a snowy December night. From then on, it was like a fairy tale. Both parties were attracted to each other from the beginning, and a casual friendship soon turned to dating. Unwilling to tell Eugene about her magical heritage and unhappy childhood, Madeline made up another story involving foster parents and Shanghai. (She had unintentionally spun a story of the childhood she wished she’d had, an alternate universe where her family had given her up and she had been able to have a normal, happy childhood.) Eugene believed her. How could he not, when it sounded so ordinary? The pair got married two years later, when Madeline was 30 and Eugene 32, and settled into an apartment of their own. Their first child, born in 2005, was a boy, and they named him Jeremiah. He was a joyful child, but as plenty firstborns do, he longed for a sibling, someone to play with, and in 2009, his wish came true. Juniper Yu was born – but neither Eugene nor Jeremiah knew that their newest addition to the Yu’s was not fully related to either of them.

In early 2008, Madeline had decided to take a break and tour around China for a month and a half. Shenzhen was part of the travel plan, and although she was hesitant at first, she eventually decided that returning once more would give her a sense of closure and allow her to completely move on from her traumatic childhood. Besides, there was little chance of running into the purebloods she had grown up with anyway… right?

Wrong. By some awful coincidence, Madeline bumped into Nathaniel Xia, her ex-friend who had betrayed her once upon a time. Embarrassed and still angry with him, Madeline turned away, planning to cut her holiday short and return to Beijing straight away. However, when Nathaniel apologised to her retreating figure, she couldn’t help but want to stay and listen. Perhaps it was naïve of her, but the apology seemed sincere enough – and it was all she had wanted to hear for the past few years. Nathaniel and Madeline’s friendship sprang up again, and at some point, their feelings grew to be something more, despite the fact that both of them were married. The result of the affair was Juniper. Once Madeline realised that she was pregnant, she cut off all ties with him, terrified at the prospect of her husband finding out, and fled back to Beijing. Nathaniel doesn't even know that he has such a daughter, and the matter of Juniper's biological father is something Madeline plans on keeping a secret forever. No one would ever have to know…

CHILDHOOD

Juniper lived in Beijing for the first four years of her life, and like most children, she doesn’t remember much of her early childhood, although she’s returned many times throughout the years to visit her family. Nothing truly noteworthy occurred apart from her younger sister Annalise’s birth two years after her own. One of the only outcomes she can think of is the Beijing accent she acquired, with a tendency to incorporate an “er” sound onto the end of her words when speaking Chinese.

When she was four, her Great-Aunt Sera’s cancer progressed to Stage 4 despite the doctors’ best efforts. She had been battling cancer for many years, and although everyone had hoped for the best, the news came that she would have mere months to live at the most. Eugene and Sera had formed a special bond when he was a child, and he was determined to make her happy. He even took time off work – which was saying a lot for Eugene, whose job was practically his entire life. However, Sera’s wish was pretty hard to promise: she wanted to move to LA and spend her last moments under the sun. Naturally, Eugene had some doubts and was slightly hesitant to do this at first, but then Madeline expressed her wish to move too (having been paranoid of the Xia’s finding her for years). The Yu’s moved to Los Angeles, where they would stay for the next few months until Sera’s death. Juniper has no complete memories of Sera – only tiny flashes, like the smell of her perfume or the pale blue of her sweater – but as Eugene has often told his children about their great-aunt, she thinks she would have liked her.

In contrast to what her siblings thought, the young girl disliked Los Angeles and often complained to her parents that it was way too sunny, way too often, but Eugene refused to move on from LA and Sera. He was going into a downwards spiral, something the entire family could see. He probably would have never gotten out of it if it wasn’t for the job offer that came two or three months after Sera’s death, asking him to work at a prestigious hospital in Seattle.

The Yu’s moved again, this time to the neighbourhood of Queen Anne. Seattle was their home for the next five years, and as far as Juniper is concerned, it still is. From then on, her life was reasonably normal. Although Madeline was facing the possibility that her daughter could be magical, Juniper grew up blissfully unaware of her heritage – but that didn’t mean that life was all sunshine and rainbows for her. She often felt overshadowed by her athletic older brother and musical prodigy for a sister. However, the three Yu siblings had an inseparable bond despite all the bickering and secret envy. Furthermore, Madeline and Eugene never played favourites with their children, treating and loving them all equally. Life was easy and simple, with a happy life at home and school. Juniper attended a prestigious grammar school, and although it had a reputation for being rather snobby, it soon became clear that the rumours were completely unfounded. The teachers were kind and her classmates were supportive, and she was well-liked and well known throughout the school due to both her siblings and her personality. Madeline was relieved to see that Juniper appeared to be an ordinary Muggle girl, with no signs of magic.

In short, Juniper had thrived wonderfully in Seattle.

But all good things come to an end. When Juniper was nine, Eugene lost his job. The hospital had burned down in an accident, and it cost too much to repair. The owners had no choice but to send off its employees with a heavy heart; all they could do was supply them with glowing letters of recommendation. Eugene searched far and wide for another hospital to work at, and eventually found a hospital overseas in England. The job was perfect, and it was the best offer he had so far. There was only one problem – the Yu family would have to move again.

Their new home was a beautiful house located in West London with Cherry Tree Lane undertones, something straight out of a storybook, and the city was close nearby. Everyone adapted quickly to their new surroundings and came to love London – that is, everyone except for Juniper. Confused and unsure of herself, the nine year old did not settle down as quickly or as easily as she had hoped. Unlike her previous school, this one lived up to its snobby reputation. The teachers were not unkind, but they were distant and strict, while her classmates were hard to get along with and cliquey. She threw herself into her schoolwork, filling her room with books and worksheets, hoping to soak in the knowledge and impress her classmates. It didn’t work – her peers constantly ostracised and teased her for it, calling her a teacher’s pet and a know-it-all, causing her to retreat further into her shell and eventually triggering her first instance of magic when she was ten.

During a science lesson, one of her classmates began to mock Juniper’s accent when the teacher left the room. This particular girl had been tormenting her all week, pointing out her tendency to spend lunchtimes in the library alone and whispering cutting insults not-so-subtly during class. Juniper’s frustration had reached its peak and she angrily snapped at her to shut up. As she did so, the Bunsen burner on the table behind the girl suddenly lit up, singeing and burning off the tips of her hair before someone picked up a bucket and put it out. To this day, her classmates swear that it was Juniper who turned it on.

Juniper would only scoff and firmly assert that she had barely even moved, claiming that she was innocent and being scapegoated when questioned by teachers. Without any evidence to prove that she had turned the Bunsen burner on, she walked away without any consequences. Although her father was merely confused and moved on quickly, her mother realised straight away that this had been Juniper’s first instance of accidental magic, and was overcome by the fear and panic that soon settled in, knowing that she had to explain her heritage to her family once her daughter’s letter from Hogwarts arrived.

Many more peculiar, unexplainable events continued to happen – fairly mundane ones, to be fair, but none went unnoticed. A book falling on Annalise’s head during an argument. Lockers slamming in her classmates’ faces. Previously dead flowers blooming in the middle of winter… Sure enough, on Juniper’s eleventh birthday in May, a strange person with a wand and a letter addressed to her arrived on the Yu’s doorstep and explained that Juniper was magical. Eugene was incredulous and at first believed that it was a prank, but upon Madeline’s confession he had no choice but to accept it. (In the months that followed, Eugene and Madeline argued continuously, with the former feeling betrayed and the latter stubbornly defending her decisions.)

As for Juniper’s reaction? Shock and disbelief were the first two emotions to spring up. She had already accepted that her siblings were the special ones, the stars, and that she was just an ordinary kid, the epitome of the forgotten middle child. However, the more she thought about it, the more sense it made, and after recalling the strange outbursts of magic she had experienced in the past few months, she decided to fully accept that she was a witch and began to look forward to Hogwarts.

EUGENE YU- Juniper knows him as her father, but they're actually not biologically related - although neither knows this yet. A Muggle cardiothoracic surgeon from a middle-class family in Beijing, Eugene is a kind and honest man and makes an effort to spend time with his family, although his job means that he's often away at the hospital. Although he and his wife have celebrated many years of a happy, successful marriage, their relationship has become more and more strained ever since Madeline confessed to hiding away her true heritage for years.

MADELINE YU, NEE ZHANG- Juniper's mother was once the disappointing Squib daughter of the prestigious pureblood family of Zhang (a secret that she's only just revealed to her family), although now she works as a dressmaker in Muggle London. She's a model mother, and Juniper once trusted her more than anyone else in the world, but ever since her birthday, things have definitely changed. Nowadays, Madeline's two other children have distanced themselves from her, but she's too busy arguing with Eugene to notice.

JEREMIAH YU- Jeremiah is older than Juniper by three years, and is the athletic golden boy of the family, his mother's pride and joy. Juniper is particularly close with her brother, and used to spend a lot of time with him before Hogwarts. Despite previously having a good relationship with his mother and father, Jeremiah is now incredibly angry at Madeline for lying to them all, and is slowly but surely breaking away from his entire family.

ANNALISE YU- Born two years after Juniper, prodigious violinist Annalise is the baby - and the brat - of the family. Juniper used to find her overdramatic and seemingly shallow personality annoying and therefore didn't spend as much time with her. Recently, though, Annalise has quieted down a lot, perhaps due to the toxic environment their home has become, and spends a lot more time in her room, playing her violin to block out the noise.

Always present in her bag is a leather journal with the initials JY monogrammed in gold on the cover. Hello there, friend! I'm Mish, widely known as Ivy on the site, and... uh... I suck at writing these things.
