Katharine "Katha" Spence-Morgan, born on February 25, is the eldest daughter of Ruth Morgan, a pediatrician, and Kameron Spence, an editor at the local paper. She has one younger sister, Sue Ellen, who is three years her junior.
She began showing signs of magic around age 4, initially displaying itself as weird coincidences and dumb luck. An adventurous child, her parents had little success in dissuading her from climbing up the highest things she could find, and despite falling out of trees and windows regularly, the only injuries ever sustained were to her parents' peace of mind.
As she aged and began school and athletics, her magic shifted from manifesting as good luck for her into bad luck for others, especially those she disliked. Books, pencils, and, in one notable case, a piece of ceiling would fly at snotty classmates heads, strict teachers would have their lesson plans burst into flames, and tennis rivals would watch as their racquet's strings unplucked themselves one at a time.
It became harder and harder for Katha's parents to ignore in the last two years before she received her letter, as neighbors would complain about Katha somehow turning their child's hair blue or filling their swimming pool with gelatin. Once, when her father came to check and make sure Katha was doing her homework, he could have sworn that all of her stuffed tigers were moving themselves about the room, but as soon as he blinked it was gone.
Finding out Katha was a witch was partially relieving, if for no other reason than it meant that their daughter wasn't blossoming into a young delinquent, as they'd previously feared. While her mother had a sort of resigned acceptance to the revelation, Katha's father was thrilled by it. He is, perhaps, even more excited about Katha being a witch than Katha herself. Katha's younger sister Sue Ellen, who at eight is already on track to study at the Royal Ballet School has stated that she's happy for Katha but very glad that she isn't a witch herself.

If Katha's family had to describe her in a word, her sister would choose "loud", her father "inquisitive", and her mother "impatient". She's impulsive and brash, but also sincere and candid. She is not one to hide how she feels, which both helps and hinders her life in equal measure.
While Katha likes knowing things, she doesn't necessarily like learning in an academic setting, seeing it as nothing more than a means to an end. Her performance in school is spotty at best, and she tends to excel at subjects that interest her while falling behind in those that don't. Her attention span is short, and she tends to lose interest in hobbies quickly, flitting from one activity to the next as soon as she tires of it. The exception to this is sports, as she comes from a very athletic family and it helps her feel closer to them.

Katha looks much more like her father than her mother, having inherited his height, nose, brown curls, and dark complexion. However, her honey-coloured eyes are from her mum. She is tall for her age and rather gangly, and has her fingers crossed that she'll grow into it.
She has numerous scars on her arms and legs that she acquired from things like sports and exploring, as well as one in the corner of her eye from where her mom's cat scratched her when she was four.

Ruth is a stern mother, but also a very caring one. She tends to enact impose numerous rules on her children, all stemming from her constant anxiety pertaining to their safety. As a pediatrician, she's seen some of the worse case scenarios when it comes to children's health, and would love nothing more than to be able to shelter her own children from anything that could do them harm. Katha causes her the most stress of her two children, due to her propensity for adventure and risk-taking. Sue Ellen, thankfully, is a much more cautious child.

Though he's far more mellow than his eldest daughter, he shares her same adventurous spirit, and was thrilled that she'd be able to explore a whole world that he'd never even known existed.
