"A snake's poison is life to the snake; it is in relation to a man that it means death. Similarly, my actions and decisions are all right and justified in my eyes; it's you who deems them wrong and unethical. Everything is relative."

The Dukes:

The Dukes, although powerful, were never considered part of the Sacred Twenty-Eight. Some consider this an oversight. While others believe that during the 1930’ the family was wavering in their belief, and even considered breaking centuries old traditions of marrying strictly pure-blood witches and wizards to avoid inbreeding; this eventually led to the Dukes family being excluded from the list. Circa 1932-34, after Aaron Dukes’ death, his oldest son became the head of the family and solidified the blood purity ideology in the family once again. Damian Dukes’ idea was revolutionary in the clan’s history, and it seemed that the Dukes’ would manage to maintain their blood status after all; they began to form alliances and marry outside of the country. Ultimately, the arranged marriages led to strong ties between the Dukes and the Nemes (Hungarian family), Dogaru (Romanian family), Mizushima (Japanese family) and Choi (Korean family) clans. The most recent alliance formed is with the Chois, who at first refused the marriage proposal, but in the end agreed to Junseo Choi and Henrietta Dukes’ union.

The Dukes family’s members more often than not worked in the Ministry of Magic, more specifically in the Wizengamot Administration Services. As a part of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, they undertook administrative and clerical duties for the Wizengamot. Due to the Dukes’ high intelligence, and love for order and tidiness, the maintenance of court documents, schedules and legal proceedings came naturally to them. Up until the 20th century, the women of the clan were not allowed to work; their main job was to be a housewife and good mother for the children.

As students, the Dukes have proved to have an affinity for the art of potion making and dark magic. They tend to be sorted into either Ravenclaw or Slytherin.

The Choi:

The Choi clan is considered to be one of the few South Korean wizard families that managed to maintain their pure-blood status throughout the centuries. The mixture of a conservative outlook on life, and strict following of the pure-blood supremacy ideology, led the clan to refuse any and all marriages between one of their own and a wizard/witch they deemed inferior. As a consequence of their strong beliefs, inbreeding was inevitable; marriage between second and/or third cousins was a common occurrence, though they would never allow an union between first cousins or siblings due to the fear of genetic mutation. Despite their struggles in procreation, the Choi has refused arranged marriages offered by foreign clans up until the early 2000’, when the British Dukes family contacted them. The South Korean wizard family took an interest in the Dukes’ intelligence and sophisticated nature they managed to conserve even in the present, where vulgar behaviour was considered the norm. It took 2 years of negotiation and debates until the Choi agreed to the marriage between their youngest son, Junseo, and the Dukes’ oldest daughter, Henrietta.

The first traces of the Choi clan were found in documents which date back as far as the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1897); the first memoir being written in 1453, the same year when Byzantium fell to the Ottoman Empire. They’ve been long associated with Magizoology, their field of expertise being the study of different types of serpents; they were interested mainly in Basilisks, but unfortunately breeding such creatures was banned in the Medieval times. Although they were widely known for their close ties with snakes, the clan was never feared per se because of their gentle and tacit nature; they were exceptionally cautious when dealing with dangerous species. Even so, there were a few instances throughout history when muggles fell victim of the serpents the clan bred.

Up to this day, they are mainly preoccupied by breeding different species of serpents; selling their fangs, eggs, etc. to potion masters, while also breeding and training snakes as simple pets for the more inexperienced wizards and witches.

As students, the Choi family members have proved to be persevering, achieving their goals even if it means that they need to make sacrifices along the way. They have a natural affinity for Care of Magical Creatures. Being a Parselmouth was not common in the family, but one would usually surface every 50 years or so.

Natasha was born on a stormy winter afternoon, on the day before Christmas Eve, in London, England. She was the first and only child of Junseo and Henrietta Choi (née Dukes), who were both born into old, wealthy pure-blood families. The girl’s birth was a blessing and good omen for both clans, for her arrival deepened the ties between them.

Natasha was raised in an environment void of warmth. Her parents, although taking care of her and fulfilling her every wish, failed to give her what most children need for their healthy development, that being unconditional love. She was treated more like a trophy, a proof of an alliance/contract, rather than a human being. This led to her never experiencing what it was like to truly enjoy one’s childhood. From the moment she could talk, Junseo and Henrietta focused on her education, making her sit for hours in one place with tutors who helped her learn languages and acquaint her with a noble family’s etiquette. As such, Natasha was not allowed to show any emotion that might corrupt the image of a perfect child.

Not only her parents, her grandparents also had high expectations of her; most notably her paternal grandfather, who wished for her to continue the Choi family’s tradition and familiarize herself with the different types of serpents they bred. Although the young girl managed to remember a handful of species, she knew them in name only, and didn’t remember their most distinct characteristics, which disappointed her grandfather greatly.

Along the years Natasha was travelling a lot, spending time with both the Choi and the Dukes. Despite her poor knowledge of serpents, she always enjoyed staying with her father’s side of the family. While there, she met Joowon Choi, her first cousin. Even though the boy was older than her by quite a few years, the two got along well; he was the only one with whom Natasha felt free and dared to act like any child of her age.

Her first signs of magic started to show when she was around five years old; Junseo and Henrietta were fighting, the object of their disagreement was the contradictory interests of the two clans. This was one of the few instances when the young girl dropped her perfect façade and dared to shout at the two adults. Without wanting to, she turned her mother’s eyes from their almond shape to mongoloid. In retrospect, it might’ve been because deep down she wanted her parents to be more alike. Other instances of accidental magic include setting her tutors’ robes on fire and making her father’s pet snake, Argus, levitate.

~PERSONALITY~

Since young, Natasha was put under a lot of pressure due to her family's high expectations. She tends to overthink even the smallest things from the fear of failure and the need to prove herself to her parents. She is quiet most of the time, observing the people around her with a critical eye, and only approaching others if they meet a list of requirements her parents laid out to her along the years; the most important trait being: they have to be pure-blooded. Because of this, Natasha is very reluctant to even talk with muggle-born witches and wizards, let alone make friends with them. Even though she was raised to value blood purity above all, she still can't find it in herself to bully those "inferior" to her; unless she is provoked, she would rather stay away from such people and focus on forming connections with people who (in her opinion) would turn out to be useful to her improvement and power gaining journey. After all, according to her parents' teachings, love and friendship is inferior to power, therefore she must strive to form connections with wizards and witches of her kind. As such, Natasha is what one would call a wolf in sheep’s clothing. At first glance, she seems like a harmless little girl (her soft features and puffy cheeks make her look innocent and younger than her actual age), which is ideal if she wants to approach someone, but if one tries to get to know her, they’ll realise very quickly how deceiving her appearance can be. Under the polite, mature facade hides a harsh side of her personality. She is straightforward and honest to a fault, sometimes even unpleasant to be around. Although responsible, she is untrustworthy, as she will always prioritize her own needs over others’; she is willing to do anything to achieve her goals, even if it means that sacrifices need to be made along the way.
