Max looks like a mixture of his parents, with his mother's blue eyes and his father's strong jawline. At 13, he's quite a bit taller than average and his voice has begun to deepen, however he still has voice cracks every now and again. He's started growing a bit of facial hair but he's not a fan and immediately shaves when he sees it - though with the straight razor his father's forced him to use, he may show up to class with mysterious nicks and cuts on his face every couple of weeks. Despite his height, he hasn't yet started to fill out so he looks somewhat scrawny compared to the older years.
Image
Personality Type: INTJ

Cynical. Introspective. Cautious. Ruthless. Efficient. Wickedly clever. The kind of face Max shows can change based who he's talking to, and whether he treats someone with coldness or charming wit depends entirely on his mood. Spending most of his time in his head, it can be hard for people to know what he thinks of them unless he decides it's worth making known; he doesn't believing in mincing words if it isn't beneficial to him, and can often seem harsh when he doesn't believe someone is being efficient.

Despite this, as high a standard as he holds other people to, he holds himself to a higher one. He's smart and can come up with creative solutions, but he's no genius - what he is instead is absolutely focused. Once he decides something is worth his time, he will work tirelessly around the clock to gain knowledge and experience with it. He'll dedicate hours to reading, researching, and working out the background in his head because of a whim that knowing about something like Mayan culture might come in handy someday. This has its benefits but at times he'll forsake everything else including friendships so he can gain more knowledge. His downfall comes in not understanding why other people don't do the same; if he believes someone's work ethic is even slightly compromised then he'll lose respect for that person and it will be near impossible for them to gain it back.

Work comes first, but as a kid Max naturally enjoys mischief as well. His often well-meaning intentions to be mature can become derailed between his projects and he can't help but have fun getting swept up in some adventure or another. He's cynical, however he still has a certain naïvety that can get him into trouble when he agrees to something like dung-bombing a professor. When with his friends or people he trusts, some of the ever-present tension in him that makes him keep his innermost thoughts quiet eases enough that he can joke around. If he doesn't like someone he has no problem manipulating them, fighting dirty, or throwing them under the bus, but his loyalty to the people he genuinely likes is unmatched.

PRE-HOGWARTS

Reducio
Max is an only child who grew up under the watchful eye of two of the coldest parents this side of Birmingham. His mother and father - and their numerous siblings - are all Slytherins. They are also all of the mind that Voldemort was absolutely right, and Max suspects a couple of them might have been Death Eaters. They're often more proud of him for tripping a muggle child than getting high grades, which makes him feel immensely lonely. On a good day, he'll alternate between loving and fearing his parents. On a bad day, he forgets what the word 'loving' means.

Growing up in the house of Alisdair and Rosalyn Avery wasn't the best place in the world, but Max made do with what he had. When he wasn't being schooled on the proper way to act, he was in his parent's massive library skimming through history books to learn everything he could. He enjoyed wizarding and muggle history alike, which eventually lead him to a local muggle library where he often snuck in secrecy to avoid his parent's judgement.

One day in the library, he met a muggle boy who was up to all sorts of mischief and couldn't help but be curious. By the end of the day, he'd joined in and they'd become fast friends through the power of laughing at adults together. His secret trips to the library became more numerous as he started hanging out more and more with a boy his parents would've considered 'lower than trash,' and after a few months he even started thinking that muggles weren't that bad.

Unfortunately, like all good things, it had to end. His parents caught him in the library after noticing him sneaking out and following him. If they were angry about him going to a muggle library, there was no word for the ferocity in their eyes when they realized he'd become friends with a non-wizard boy. They were ready to kill the boy and teach Max a lesson scars wouldn't let him forget when Max frantically interceded by telling them he'd be whatever they wanted if they let his friend live.

Years of small rebellions - pretending to forget certain lessons, ignoring certain relatives who went on about the 'Dark Lord,' refusing to learn curses - ended that day, when his parents reluctantly agreed. Their only stipulation was that he watch while they tortured his friend with the Cruciatus Curse for a brief period, then erased his friend's memory of it and him. It was a lesson he would never, and has never, forgotten.

Shortly after that, his letter for Hogwarts came in the mail, and Max vowed to be the best Slytherin he could so his parents would stop being so cold. Though he hated them for what they'd done to his former-friend, he also couldn't help but hate his friend too. Because this muggle boy had been so weak, Max could no longer oppose his parent's wishes. How could he respect someone who was so weak that they'd forgotten him while he had to live with what had happened every day? If there was one lesson that day had taught him, it was that life wasn't fair. And, in the end, the strong always won, no matter how evil.

YEAR ONE

School Year
Reducio
Max's first year at Hogwarts was an eventful one informed by a surprising amount of friendship, danger, and general tomfoolery. He was shocked to be sorted into Gryffindor upon first arriving there and had himself convinced that it would be a downfall for him and his entire family. He spent much of his first few months lashing out at anyone who came too close, developing quite the hatred of Hufflepuffs and people who were overly optimistic. Around the school he developed a reputation for being something of a bully, and after getting into a fight with his one good friend (Aubren) because he learned her blood status wasn't pure, he thought he'd remain a lone wolf.

It all changed when he got more acclimatized to his House and decided to try making friends there instead of just seeking out Slytherin connections. After the huge blowout with Aubren, he met up with Rhea Bishop in the library and the two enjoyed each other's company without any complications. Things got even better after an odd night where one Dorian Gray summoned him up to the Astronomy Tower to see what he was made of. The two fought hard but somehow ended up as friends after both being attacked by a Masked Figure and having to work together. From then on, Max and Dorian were inseparable and he temporarily put his prejudices behind him to also make up with Aubren.

Following all of this, he was happier even though it felt like a sword was hanging over his head from the frosty letters he received from his parents expressing their displeasure about his sorting. In potions class he became partners with a girl from the Stavrou family, which was a great move for the family plus he genuinely enjoyed her company. One of the Hufflepuff girls he bullied - Rosie Parker - managed to remind him of his past friendship with a muggle, and his bullying lessened as he started to feel guilty about it all. Rather than getting into more fights with people like James Lachoneus, he decided to do his best to fit in with his house. It helped when he was moved from a prickly, tense dorm into a more relaxed one where him and his roommates could plan pranks on teachers instead of bicker.

After a short, brutally cold Christmas break, things further improved when he met a girl who was to become one of his best friends over the year - Eris Fawley. After discovering a book in his family library telling him he could find the secret of immortality at Hogwarts behind a painting. Taking some time to do research, he found the location and was attempting to get behind the painting when Eris found him talking to himself. After a snappy exchange with the former Gryffindor prefect, the two got caught up in an adventure over discovering whatever secret the book was talking about. They were soon joined by Dorian, who'd been listening in on their conversation, and it became the beginning of an incredible trio of fiesty Hufflepuff-kickers. Though the affair about immortality ended prematurely with them only finding a map of the Great Lake, the bond they all formed was nearly as valuable.

As he grew closer to various students and still tried to do some networking with pure-bloods, he also began to grow suspicious of the prefects and professors due to their seeming lack of care about the Masked Figure. This paranoia increased as all events seemed to take a downward turn whenever professors were involved. He asked his good friend Eris Fawley to the BlossomFest Ball but they didn't even have time to dance before some kid lit the entire thing on fire. He went to what was supposed to be a fun lock-in with Professor Lear and came out of the thing covered in blood with half his friends injured. The attacks on students crested to an unbearable amount that ended only when the Masked Figure was confronted by a group of students - yes, students - not professors. Things in the school seemed to get less tense after the boy was exposed, but it wasn't something Max would soon forget.

He joined the school paper team sometime during the hectic whirl of events to give voice to his opinions, and after a ton of work he ended up heading the GryffGazette. To further impress his parents he also studied as much as possible and ended up a straight O student, though things went by so fast he didn't get the chance to sign up for Quidditch as he'd originally planned. As the school year came to a close, he found he had more confidence in himself and his skills then he ever had - what he'd accomplished had been by himself alone, with no family influence. With the newfound resolve that he'd continue to grow more independent, he completed his year.

Summer
Reducio
Despite still holding a high amount of paranoia about professors, Max decided to sign up for summer camp with a few of his close friends so that he wouldn't have to go home immediately. Things didn't go exactly as planned when a simple hunt for plants turned into something much bigger, but overall he had a pretty good time. He was able to hang out with the majority of his friends in his cabin (and make some new connections, like one Dorothy Shafiq), and they had fun bothering the Transfiguration professor, even if Max slept with one eye open because he was convinced they'd be killed at any time. Playing a game of Howl with his sworn-enemy Lear was even fun, and the camp seemed to pass by in a flash of bonfire smoke and buzzing insects. Near the end he was floored when the head of his House - Professor Valtome - asked him to be a prefect for Gryffindor, but he quickly recovered and accepted with pride so he'd have something to show his parents.

It was unfortunate that his parents weren't much in the mood to talk about his accomplishments in grades, connections, or school standings. After a surprisingly fun train ride home with a bunch of familiar faces he grew closer to, Max was immediately picked up from the station by an uncle he'd spent most of his life terrified of. 'Training,' the man claimed, since he'd done his family a huge disservice by ending up in the wrong House. Chagrined and full of fear, everything he'd learned over the past year disappeared from his mind as he followed his uncle home.

The next month was, in essence, hell. Rather than train him in the ways of being a wizard, his uncle told him he would be sent straight home the second he used magic - but said he could if he chose to. It was a temptation that would haunt him for weeks as his uncle sent him to a summer school for muggle juvenile delinquents and told the students Max had come there to see how the other side lived. He'd also been instructed to wear his best clothes, and showing up to a rough school dressed like he was going to a dinner party put a target the size of a country on him.

He spent most of the month being bullied in increasingly creative ways by the kind of people his parents had always said could never come close to touching him. They'd separated into two gangs, and neither gang would offer him any protection from the other - he was a punching bag for both of them. There was a brief respite one night in the form of the Fawley Gala, but one night of playing a socially acceptable nephew only served to remind him just how little his charms worked when it came to his muggle schoolmates. The reminder was what made him decide to change, and the next time he showed up to the school, he resolved to be wilder and rougher than anyone else.

After stealing the keys to the food pantry from one of the teachers, he challenged the leader of one of the gangs to an anything-goes fight with the stipulation that, if he won, the leader would owe him a favour - and if the leader won, he'd get the keys. Thinking it would be an easy fight, the muggle agreed, but he underestimated how dirty Max would fight. After spending a night tailoring the surroundings to help him and then using them in the fight, Max won with only minimal bruising to show for it. The favour he asked for was for the leader to help him take down the other gang; though he wasn't invested in the conflict between them, he needed to win respect and it was the only way he could come up with to do it.

The next couple of weeks, he used himself as bait to lure the enemy gang into a nearby forest. There, they'd be brutally beaten by his allies and told not to come back, striking paranoia into anyone who considered bullying him, as the people who followed him seemed to disappear. The only issue with that was that it was nearly impossible to lure the leader of the other gang into the forest, since he was overly cautious and wouldn't respond to any taunting with violence from himself. Max's solution was to have his allies break his arm to make him look weak, and then taunt the enemy leader using information he'd gathered about the kid's family.

It worked - he was followed into the forest and his allies took down the leader of the enemy gang. It was a win for everyone as his allies became the top dogs in the school, and they respected his resolve to break his own arm so they could win so much that he was no longer bullied. He was even close to becoming friends with a few of them when his uncle showed up to congratulate him on passing his training, then Obliviated their memories of him. It was a solid reminder of the gap between adult wizards and muggles - the people who'd given him so much grief had been easily subdued in a second with magic.

Exhausted and confused on his feelings about muggles, Max nonetheless felt more confidence in himself again since he'd managed to get through the ordeal with nothing but his own wits. Earning a small bit of approval from his usually emotionless uncle made him fiercely proud, and when his uncle returned him home to his parents he'd developed enough to courage to not cower and be meek in their presence. It caused quite a bit of tension within their home, however there wasn't time for it to develop into anything because they were busy playing the happy family. Networking brought them to the house of Max's friend, Phaedra, so that the Avery family could ally themselves with the Stavrou family.

The dinner went well enough that the Avery family and Stavrou family came out allied. Rosalyn managed to keep Max and Alisdair from each other's throats while navigating the waters of social pleasantry, and Max managed to keep his mouth shut so their family didn't look like it was totally falling apart. The conclusion of the summer came ended on a rather good note, even if Alisdair watched Max's back retreat to Platform 9 3/4 with thoughtful, calculating eyes.

YEAR TWO

School Year Part One
Reducio
The second year of Max's school life was probably one of the best years of his entire life. His bonds with the other students he'd met only grew through events, birthday parties, and attending classes with them. After proving himself an adequate prefect, he also managed to take on the role of Head Boy to help coordinate all of the prefects around the school. Rosalyn wrote to say she was proud of him, and he was on cloud nine (even if there was still radio silence from Alisdair). His bullying ways ceased for the year, and he became more a person of order rather than chaos.

Armed with a new variety of spells and knowledge that he thought could be used to change the world, Max's only downfall was his arrogance. To try out for Quidditch, he removed the cast from his broken arm much too early. Not thinking he should heal it fully before using it, he attempted to hit a bludger and did something so horrid that he wasn't able to recover afterwards. Without knowing the proper treatment - and too proud to ask - the bone never quite healed right.

Giving up on his dream of being an adequate Quidditch player, he focused his attention on the newspaper and his Head Boy job. This year there wasn't anything as menacing as a Masked Figure to contend with, so nothing overly eventful or traumatic happened. It should've been the year, the one where Max Avery proved to the world that he was the capable and intelligent pure-blood his parents had always wanted him to be.

But, as his bad luck (and worse family) would have it, everything he had managed to build for himself was ruined before he could take the exams.

Out of nowhere, with not even a letter of warning, Alisdair Avery showed up to pull Max out of school 'as is my right because I am his father.' His education, his status with the newspaper, his work as Head Boy... in a matter of minutes, Alisdair managed to take it all away. Frustrated and horrified, Max fought with his father for two days over going back until he realized there was nothing he could do against the man. Alisdair was going to teach him business and that was the end of it. There could be no protest against someone so powerful.

Confidence shattered, Max went back to being an obedient and rather lifeless child as his father brought him to do backroom deals regarding illegal weaponry. He was to sit in a corner and listen meekly, stifling all urges to protest the prejudice pure-bloods had against muggles. It might've continued on that way had his father been a stupid man, but Alisdair wasn't the head of a corporate weaponry chain for nothing.

Salem, Massachusetts. That was where things began to change between Max and his father. What he thought was just another business deal turned into something more sinister when he was beckoned into a back room and forced to spend hour upon hour alone with a 'family friend.' What this 'friend' dealt in wasn't the same type of weapons Alisdair used, but his were just as deadly, if not more. Memories.

He was a historian of the worst kind, one who robbed graves to collect Pensieves. The collection he delightedly forced Max to watch included not only Salem, but a number of 'witch-hunts' from across history and geography. Through wars, reformations, plagues, and general periods of upset, Max watched muggles hunt down people they deemed 'witches' and kill them in increasingly abhorrent ways. Things began to make a terrible sort of sense; why the wizarding world was kept secret, why the mixing of pure-bloods and muggles could be a danger to them all, why the prejudice still ran rampant in this day and age... It wasn't because the wizards had any original prejudice against the muggles. It was because the muggles had deadly prejudice against the wizards.

It was a horrible thing to learn, and Max would've spiraled into a dark place had his father not been there to look after him. When he stumbled out of the final Pensieve, tears and snot mingling on his face, his father wrapped him in the kind of paternal embrace he'd secretly craved since he was young. Despite everything that had happened between them, their relationship changed in that moment and Alisdair began to feel like a true father. His reasonings made sense, and suddenly it was like everything up until then had been one huge misunderstanding between father and son.

The next couple of months, Max was allowed to participate in the business deals with his father. He was kept by the man's side constantly, and he began to admire Alisdair as a ferocious negotiator. Sure, he wasn't allowed to write to his friends or his mother, but his father had grown considerably warmer and was a shockingly good travelling companion. Not one nightmare went by where he didn't wake up to find Alisdair soothing him, assuring him that nothing bad would happen because they'd never let the muggles get that sort of power again.

By the time they returned home so Max could pack for school, he wasn't afraid of his own house anymore. It was odd to see how quiet his mother had gotten (and the inexplicable looks of sorrow she shot at him made no sense), however he had a friend in his father. Even if, unbeknownst to him, his father never lost the glint of cold triumph in his eyes or the threatening look that would dart from Max to Rosalyn when the boy wasn't paying attention.

FINISHED
↪ in order of occurence
YEAR ONE
Reducio
The Sorting Ceremony ⇒ To his shock and horror, Max is sorted into Gryffindor. Worried what his parents will think and disturbed by the implications of what this could mean for his character, Max leaves feeling like there'll be a long, hard year ahead of him.

Gazing ⇒ First meetings with Eri Windstone & Rosie Parker; Max bullies Rosie and swears to give her grief if he sees her again. He also fights with Eri but they ended off on a tentatively good note, saying they'll practice using spells against each other at another time.

The Opposite of Friendly ⇒ First meetings with James Lachoneus, Michelle Lynch, Anatole Evans, Adam Harringtom, & Dorothy Do; Max gets into a fight with James because he's pissed off and the kid is moving too slow. They trade words about blood before beating the crap out of each other. Other students hear the commotion in the hall and show up to put a stop to the fight, taking Max and James to the hospital wing.

An Unexpected Meeting ⇒ First meeting with Aubren Anson; the two hit it off fantastically and look as if they'll be great friends. Though some Gryffindors give Aubren lip, Max defends her and they race to the library. They have fun together and dream about future years, but Max doesn't realize she's a half-blood.

Fact & Fiction ⇒ Aubren and Max's friendship grows as they study trolls and talk about adventures, but the bonding is abruptly cut short when an old enemy of Aubren's reveals that she's a half-blood. It ends in heartache on both sides, with the two of them growing bitter and angry with each other.

A Study in Red ⇒ First meeting with Rhea Bishop; after the fallout with Aubren, Max is studying in the library alone when he meets up with a face he's seen around the Common Room. It turns out the two have a lot in common and become fast friends, laughing together about dumb pureblood antics.

Avery Shade of Gray ⇒ First meeting with Dorian Gray; Dorian sends an owl threatening to hurt Aubren if Max doesn't show up to the Astronomy Tower, and the two meet to talk it out. It turns out Aubren was alright and it was just supposed to be a harmless prank, but after the two stop fighting they're attacked by a mysterious masked figure. With injuries on both sides, they leave to the infirmary wondering what the hell is going on.

Getting There Safely? ⇒ First meetings with Marissa North and Ebony Cullen; when Max catches James in an embarrassing situation, a fight ensues between him and the three Hufflepuffs. After trading insults and blows, Max limps out and leaves Ebony bleeding on the floor.

Crimson and Conflict ⇒ First meeting with Albert Pedraza; Max, Anatole, Dorian, and Albert meet up for the first time as roommates and get into a verbal fight over some comments Albert directs at Dorian. After bickering and the fight coming dangerously close to a physical one, their fifth dormmate shows up and somewhat diffuses the tension. They all end up going to sleep with the resolve that their dorm will be changed around to prevent further conflict.

Forget Friendly Faces ⇒ First meeting with Phaedra Stavrou; her and Max become partners for a potion and get to know each other a little. It turns out they have a lot in common and they end a good note, Max deciding he wants to be friends with her.

Strollin' ⇒ Max and Rosie meet again, and the two almost get into a fight. However, after much threatening and insulting, they part on a note that... might not be negative?

Ask and Receive ⇒ First meeting with Eris Fawley; Max looks into a mysterious note he found at home that suggests immortality is hidden within the walls of Hogwarts. After deciphering it, he and the Gryffindor prefect, Eris Fawley, discover a secret passage and are soon joined by Dorian, who'd been watching them all along. Their journey takes them on an interesting path, but unfortunately they don't find what they were looking for. What they do find, however, is that they're destined to become great friends.

Rictumsempra Tag ⇒ A fun game set up by the Head of Gryffindor during which a bunch of Gryffindors learn a new spell and competitively practice on each other. It's boys vs girls in an all-out war of tickling, and through trials and tribulations the boys attempt a team-up to take down their competitors. They fail, of course, and the girls win the game.

Flower Crown Making ⇒ A BlossomFest event where the students had the opportunity to participate in a flower crown making contest. Max creates a makeshift copper and metal crown decorated with flower petals in a creative yet disturbing tribute to the Greek god of death.

The Learning of an Art ⇒ In order to brush up on his skills for the upcoming ball, Max goes to watch the profs teach people how to dance. While there he meets up with Eris and they briefly share a dance. When it ends, he asks her to the ball and she accepts.

25 Days Late ⇒ After catching a glimpse of an invitation to Rosie Parker's birthday, Max heads there to give her an anonymous gift in order to stop feeling less guilty about bullying her for the past few months.

The Sneezing Hex, First Year ⇒ A history class and a new hex spell that can be used to get up to mischief. Life is good.

Important Investigations ⇒ A meeting is set up in the library to discuss the Masked Figure that's been going around attacking students. Max shows up to give his two cents and leaves troubled and paranoid about the entire ordeal.

Max vs. Luna ⇒ First meeting with Luna Aurelius; a practice duel is set up for the kids to try out their spells. After a few rounds, Max ends up knocking Luna out and helps her to the hospital wing when she wakes up.

Eyeglass Repair Charm ⇒ The learning of a new spell through breaking 'shadeglasses' and fixing them back up again.

Bubble-Producing Charm ⇒ Another history class, another great spell learned - this one having a potential for obscuring vision and agitating opponents in duels.
YEAR TWO
Reducio
A Letter ⇒ Max and Phaedra exchange letters about their summers and the upcoming school year. It seems to be a common complaint that puberty sucks and teenagers ought to be taken more seriously. Both taller and a little older, they agree their cats need a playdate and plan to meet up sometime at school.

Gryffindor Tea Party ⇒ First meetings with Maggie Parker and Meenauh Silmataurea. Invited to a tea party for people who tried out for the Gryff Quidditch team, Max meets up with Eris and exchanges snappy words with Maggie. Afterwards, him and Eris meet Meenauh and have a moral discussion on Muggles vs the Wizarding World. Secrets come out, words are had, and it ends with Max and Eris needing to have a long chat.

Max Avery, Second Year Gryffindor
Image
Image
Alisdair Avery» Father. Perhaps the most influential figure in Max's life; a true Slytherin in terms of cunning, ambition, and cruelty. As the owner of an illegal weapons business, he's not a man to be trifled with and won't hesitate to resort to the most final of measures.
Rosalyn Rosewood» Mother. Though she's never shown much in the way of maternal love, Rosalyn genuinely wants the best for Max deep down. She quietly opposes Alisdair despite his threats against her son, and she's a much more powerful woman than most people believe.
Image
Image
Eliza Avery» Aunt. Hilarious, spunky, and the proud owner of a Harley, Eliza is the black sheep in the Avery family. Max absolutely adores her and listens to her stories of dragon taming for the Ministry with rapt attention. She's one of the Avery's who doesn't care about bloodlines.
Ivor Rosewood» Uncle. The man Max stayed with for a summer to learn more pureblood lessons, Ivor is a haunted man who was on the wrong side of the Wizarding War. He spends many sleepless nights regretting his participation and hopes to instill his desire for peace into Max.
Image
Image
Callum Avery» Grandfather. Max's namesake for his middle name, Callum is an extremely hard man who never speaks of his past. It's clear he's the one who raised Alisdair, however he's softened enough to share world events with Max and is the one who sparked Max's love of history.
Jocasta Avery» Grandmother. An accomplished politician and fierce supporter of Wizarding rights, Jocasta is likely the one who drilled blood purity into Alisdair. She is a matriarch used to getting her way and believes in the phrase 'children should be seen but not heard.'
Image
Image
Alfie Rosewood» Grandfather. There is no one Max respects more than this quiet man who taught him that proper manners are everything. Alfie is the reason there's goodness in Rosalyn, but also the reason for her prejudice. While kind to wizards, he has poor feelings about Muggle.
Bridget Rosewood» Grandmother. Bridget may have once been a nice woman, however losing a child to bad circumstances has made her bitter and withdrawn. Max has never met anyone as good at spells as her, but the deep sadness that sometimes lurks in her eyes scares him.
Image
Image
Image
Alan Vanes» Acquaintance. The first time they met was during the lock-in, where Alan was under a love potion spell and got a little too huggy for Max's liking. Max punched him, but Alan doesn't remember the whole fiasco and they're on a tentative positive note now. For a few months they were dormmates who planned pranks together, and Max will say hi whenever he sees Alan in the halls now.

Albert Pedraza» Disliked. They first met up as dormmates in the Gryffindor Boys' Dormitory. Albert rubbed Max the wrong way from the beginning with too-fake smiles and words, and they got into an insult battle of epic proportions before a random kid came in and they both backed down for the night. Max hasn't seen Albert around in a while and he's not sorry about that.

Anatole Evans» Neutral. Throughout the first year, they ended up meeting a few times due to being around the same area in inopportune times. Anatole seemed wishy-washy and to always be changing his mind on whether he was tough or weak, so Max found it hard to get a read on him. Either way, there was no love lost between them and Max doesn't really notice his absence.

Aubren Anson» Best friend. Aubren was one of the first half-bloods Max ever befriended, this because he didn't realize her blood status until after they'd decided they liked each other. While it caused a lot of strife between them when he initially found out, they eventually made up and she became one of his best friends along with Dorian Gray. He misses her.

Dorian Gray» Best friend. The circumstances they met in were terrible at best in a prank gone horribly wrong, yet the end result was an incredible friendship forged through the fires of a massive fist fight. Throughout the first couple of years, they were constantly together along with Aubren and Eris, and Eris, Dorian, and Max developed a group known as the 'Immortality Trio' after a (futile) quest for the secret to living forever. Where Dorian is now, Max isn't sure, but he hopes his friend is happy and that someday they'll be able to meet again.

Eris Fawley» Best friend. The first time these two Gryffs met were under the above mentioned beginning of the 'Immortality Trio.' Max immediately liked the feisty young prefect, and after spending one night with her and Dorian searching through creepy catacombs, he knew they'd be friends forever. Since then, he's taken her to the ill-fated Blossom Ball, owled her through the summer, hung out with her to generally cause havoc, and joined the Quidditch team alongside her.

Maggie Parker» Disliked. After a summer being taught to hate Muggles and all they stood for, Max snapped at Maggie during a tea party in the Gryffindor Common Room. Though she never actually did anything he didn't deserve, he dislikes her on principle for catching him on a bad day.

Meenauh Silmataurea» Neutral. During the Gryffindor Tea Party, Eris, Max, and Meenauh got into a moral discussion involving Muggles. Their views clashed and Max disagrees with much of what Meenauh believes in, however she was respectful enough in her opinion and appeared she might have the same sort of endgame in mind with the ending of suffering. Despite this, with two opposing and strong beliefs, their crossing paths might prove dangerous in a few years.

Rhea Bishop» Friend. Rhea was one of the first Gryffindors Max met who could sympathize with his plight about not being put in Slytherin. They got into a discussion filled with familial frustration and then laughter in the library, and they've kept in touch since then. They often see each other at events and Max will take any opportunity to hang out with her since he thinks she's a cool person.

Scott Alexander» Acquaintance. The two boys met briefly during yet another shuffle of the Gryffindor Boys' Dormitory. Max doesn't know much about Scott, but he seems okay and they didn't end up in any sort of fight. He also believes Scott is a good prefect, since they never had any issues when Max was Head Boy.

Image
Ami Procoppio» Acquaintance. While he doesn't have a strong opinion of her, Max respects the fact that Amy cares about cats enough to want to look after the stray one they found. Out of all the Hufflepuffs he's met and hated, she seems to be one of the okay ones.

Dorothy Shafiq» Acquaintance. The most memorable event Max has with Dorothy is a time when they became partners for an event at summer camp. She's definitely not like other Hufflepuff he knows, and he respects her for her disposition and her powerful family. If they were to talk again, he wouldn't mind getting to know her better and possibly becoming an ally of hers.

Ebony Cullen» Enemy. One of a couple of reasons why Max has a massive, unadulterated hatred for many Hufflepuffs. When he got into a fight with James, she pissed him off and he ended up throwing the helmet of a knight at her. Somehow it hit her in the stomach and made her fall to the floor bleeding. It was extremely satisfying.

James Lachoneus» Enemy. The main reason he hates Hufflepuffs. James caught him in a bad mood and they ended up in a fistfight so vicious they were both taken to the infirmary. The next time they met up was nearly as bad with the both of them getting in a fight, but this time Max walked away before it could get bad. He hasn't seen James around lately and, frankly, he wouldn't care if the kid was dead in a ditch somewhere.

Marissa North» Enemy. In one of his fights with James, Marissa stepped in to help the little wimp out and ended up punching Max in the face. Despite the fact that it's been years since then, Max isn't a person to forget something like that or take it lightly. She's on his list of people to ruin when he gets older, and he'll play dirty whenever possible to hurt her.

Reid Kovacs» Acquaintance. The circumstances they met under were... unusual, to say the least. A Ravenclaw boy accidentally set a Hippogriff flying off while he was sitting on it, and Max and Reid grabbed the rope hanging off the creature to try and stop it. After a terrifying flight across the grounds, they both let go and fell into the Great Lake. Since this was all around the time the Masked Kid was about and Max was paranoid, he began feeling like Reid was a source of bad luck.

Rosie Parker» Neutral. Max and Rosie's relationship is... complicated. It seems like they're always either fighting or being cordial to each other with nothing in between. Since Rosie is friends with Eris, Max tries to make an attempt at being nice to her, but it never ends up well because it's hard to forget their history or the difference in their blood statuses. Maybe someday they'll be able to overcome their issues, but so far they haven't.

Serena Towers» Friend. Serena is one of Max's few childhood friends at Hogwarts. When they were younger, they met up at a function at her house and ended up really getting along since they shared similar interests and he found her nice. Even though she ended up in his most hated House, he still respects her and would fight anyone who said a bad word about her.

Image
Adam Harringtom» Acquaintance. Their first meeting was an awkward and hostile battle of wills with Max lying his ass off and Adam calling him out on it. It ended prematurely and was never resolved, but Max never forgot Adam's intelligence, and decided he actually respected the guy a couple of years later, especially after finding out that Eris was friends with him. Now that he's made this realization, he thinks there's the potential for them to get along and teach each other things. After all, Ravenclaws are generally a great house.

Eri Windstone» Acquaintance. After meeting during a bullying episode, Max and Eri decided it would be beneficial to practice their duelling moves together so they weren't caught unaware the next time they ended up in a wand fight. They got to know each other a little during practice but haven't met up since.

Kaegen Deathmote» Acquaintance. It would be impossible to not know who Kaegen was after three years of going to the same school with him, but Max doesn't really know him on a personal level. The only time they've met was their brief 'Hippogriff' ride where Max tried to help the kid out and everyone involved ended up failing miserably. Similar to his thoughts on Reid, Kaegen makes Max paranoid that something bad will happen because the boy brings bad luck.

Luna Aurelius» Acquaintance. Max doesn't know Luna well or have a strong opinion on her, but they were once partners for a duelling battle. After defeating her by a hair's breadth, Max walked her to the hospital and that was the extent of their interaction. She seems like someday she'll be a good witch.

Phaedra Stavrou» Best friend. Being partnered with Phae in potions was one of the best things that ever happened to Max. They became fast friends talking about bloodlines and cats, and their relationship only grew closer from there. Phaedra is one of the few people Max feels can genuinely relate to him, and they share just enough similarities that talking to her is always a joy. Since then they've owled many times and hung out at various events, and Max can't wait to see her more.

Image
Alexx Séverin» Acquaintance. Though they've just met, Max can already tell they'll become friends and possibly rivals. Alexx is ambitious, has natural leadership qualities, and is one of the first Slytherins he knows. He respects her and enjoys her company, yet his natural competitiveness makes him want to compete with her in every aspect. Where this will lead has yet to be revealed.

Bellamy Landon» Friend. Max met Bellamy at the same party he met Serena at, so they could also be considered childhood friends. He respects Bellamy's personality and family, and they have the kind of friendship where they don't often need to talk but will nod at each other when passing in the hallway.

Solomon Lear» (Non-mutual) Enemy. Every one of Lear's 'adventures' has turned out horribly for Max, making him paranoid about the old geezer. The fact that Lear is the headmaster but kids were still being attacked under his watch has made Max lose all respect for the man, and now they're sworn enemies. Lear may not know this or even know who Max is, but that's not point.

Core | Unicorn Hair ⇨ Unicorn hair generally produces the most consistent magic, and is least subject to fluctuations and blockages. Wands with unicorn cores are generally the most difficult to turn to the Dark Arts. They are the most faithful of all wands, and usually remain strongly attached to their first owner, irrespective of whether he or she was an accomplished witch or wizard. Minor disadvantages of unicorn hair are that they do not make the most powerful wands (although the wand wood may compensate) and that they are prone to melancholy if seriously mishandled, meaning that the hair may ‘die’ and need replacing.

Flexibility | Very Flexible ⇨ Wand flexibility or rigidity denotes the degree of adaptability and willingness to change possessed by the wand-and-owner pair - although, again, this factor ought not to be considered separately from the wand wood, core and length, nor of the owner’s life experience and style of magic, all of which will combine to make the wand in question unique. This wand is very flexible, attracted to energetic wizards and will be easily wooed by another if its owner becomes lazy.

Length | 9.1 inches ⇨ In my experience, longer wands might suit taller wizards, but they tend to be drawn to bigger personalities, and those of a more spacious and dramatic style of magic. Neater wands favour more elegant and refined spell-casting. Most wands will be in the range of between nine and fourteen inches. While I have sold extremely short wands (eight inches and under) and very long wands (over fifteen inches), these are exceptionally rare. In the latter case, a physical peculiarity demanded the excessive wand length. However, abnormally short wands usually select those in whose character something is lacking, rather than because they are physically undersized.

Wood | Aspen ⇨ Wand-quality aspen wood is white and fine-grained, and highly prized by all wand-makers for its stylish resemblance to ivory and its usually outstanding charmwork. The proper owner of the aspen wand is often an accomplished duellist, or destined to be so, for the aspen wand is one of those particularly suited to martial magic. An infamous and secretive eighteenth-century duelling club, which called itself The Silver Spears, was reputed to admit only those who owned aspen wands. In my experience, aspen wand owners are generally strong-minded and determined, more likely than most to be attracted by quests and new orders; this is a wand for revolutionaries.
