Before Hogwarts

Elspeth Gollens, an only child, has spent most of her young life playing on her own and is the most excited about getting to make new friends at Hogwarts. Her father and mother were both very nervous people who worried about Elspeth’s safety, and so hovered above her more frequently than was necessary. She didn’t particularly mind at the time, but it made making friends with neighborhood children a bit difficult. Especially given that her mother insisted on homeschooling her. Her father was a baker at a local wizarding cafe, her mother a homemaker. Both of them were heavily involved in the Welsh Independence movement. Despite their fiery and revolutionary ideologies, they spent much of their time nervous that they were being spied upon by any number of magical and muggle governments (it became apparent to Elspeth as she grew up, that this was ridiculous given that her parents did little beyond reading pamphlets and shouting obscenities in Welsh while watching the Queen make speeches on tv).

But, although they were anxious folks, they were deeply loving of Elspeth. And so she grew up believing the best in folks in spite of her parents’ natures. She loved to read books and bake bread with her dad. She created her own board games for Family Game Night. Right now, her biggest interest, though, had to be butterflies. As the UK has begun to warm thanks to climate change, Elspeth had noticed new species of butterflies moving in to her town each spring. When she’d been a very young kid she could only remember seeing the small white butterfly. But now! She swears she saw a desert orange tip butterfly out in the garden in recent months, and those must have flown all the way from Spain!

One aspect of her childhood that did torment her were some of her neighbors. There were two boys who live have lived next door to her practically her whole life. From a young age they decided that they wanted to pick on Elspeth, in part because she's a girl and in part because she's such a sadsap easy target. Which means that over the years they've thrown stink bombs over the fence at her, hidden spiders in her tree house, peed on her favorite warm rock to lay on, and stuck gum in her hair. Elspeth hasn't talked to her parents about this, worrying that if they knew what happened in her backyard they wouldn't let her go out there alone - and it's the only space she has to herself. Instead she's born the brunt of the cruel pranks and hoped that once she got to a new school she'd be able to stand up for herself.

First Year

Elspeth's first year at Hogwarts was characterized by nerves and homesickness. She regularly felt like she was unprepared to be a successful student in a school context, having been homeschooled, and struggled with being able to pay prolonged amounts of attention to dense reading and writing assignments. This led to a sense that she had been mis-sorted into Ravenclaw and wasn't actually worthy of being in the house most renowned for its intelligence and creativity. All of this was compounded by the fact that she wasn't really sure how to make friends. Because she'd spent her childhood mostly alone, she came into Hogwarts with very little social skill practices. Carolyn Hunt, a fellow first year Ravenclaw, became a comrade that she could depend on whenever she was feeling alone or left out. But otherwise, she kept to herself and shrank away from opportunities to meet other people.

As the year progressed, she slowly tried to come out of her shell bit by bit. She was deeply uncomfortable with it, but knew that she needed to push herself to make friends and learn how to be a good friend herself. There were a fair amount of stumbling, and she's definitely still learning how not to ruin a conversation with awkward pauses or daydreaming. But she made a genuine effort, and toward the end of the school year she seemed to be at least content with her place in the school.

That is, until the Blossom Ball happened. Although she had no intention of attending, disliking large events and dressing up, after hearing screams for help she rushed to the Quidditch Pitch to offer what she could. However, what she could offer wasn't very much. Although she was able to bring brooms to some students, her experience there was defined by a sudden and terrible vision of Anastasia Beckett on fire. Serena Towers got her out of the situation by flying her off on a broom, but the memory of that day haunts Elspeth still and will be something that she's processing for some time to come.

April 22nd The Storm Within in the Abandoned Toilets

After a strong urge to pee left her not paying attention to where she was, E ends up in the wrong toilet at the wrong time. She wants to help out, but she's in way over her head and is perhaps too saccharine and naive to be anything but annoying. In the end, she had her first panic attack and tried to forget the whole thing ever happened.

Despite all her better judgement, Elspeth finds herself rushing into the Blossom Ball after reading nearby and hearing as it devolves into chaos. She's not sure how she can help as a first year who doesn't know much magic and who is a generally nervous mess. But she discovers that she still has things to offer others. However, upon seeing the horrific scenes upon the Quidditch Pitch, she's left emotionally scared and terribly afraid of fires.

Her morbid curiosity is too powerful to fight against, leading Elspeth to the Hospital Wing to look after the girl she'd seen on fire.

And she'd like to thank them for their hard work.

June 6th Sleep Yoga in the Rehearsal Room

After feeling so stressed from what happened at the Blossom Ball, Elspeth decides to spend some time doing yoga with Professor Jensen. Although she sees some folks who've hurt her feelings in the past, working through her breathing helps calm her down and she finds a new hobby that speaks to her.

June 12th Maybe Just This Once in Madam Puddifoot's Tea Shop

After spending most of her first year keeping her head down and trying to get through her studies, Elspeth finds herself bored with another morning spent laying in bed with nothing to do. After some soul searching, she decides to use an old Hogsmeade permission slip she found stashed inside a used book she'd bought to sneak into the wizarding village, despite being underage. This small act of bravery, and a new friend she meets at the tea shop, give her a little boost in her confidence as well as a vision of what things could be like if she just learned to take risks.

Elspeth sets off on a mission to try and learn more about the denizens of the Great Lake. In the process, she inevitably has to get past her own hangups and also learn more about the denizens of Hogwarts as well.

Elspeth is 5’0” tall, has fairly pale white skin, with dark brown hair and unruly thick eyebrows. She's a thin, unathletic kid who doesn't seem to have hit puberty yet. Her eyes are dark brown, her hair is thick but naturally fairly straight. She wears it down all of the time, finding that being able to hide behind it is preferable to having her full face exposed with it up. There is something about her that is fairly generic, like she could blend easily into a crowd or be mistaken for someone else. But there's also a softness, an unassuming nonthreatening nature that's immediately sensed when looking at her.

Her gait is quick, she takes a lot of small steps in a hurry to get from one place to the next with a kind of frantic energy that gives away how generally anxious she is. While she walked with decent posture before coming to Hogwarts, she's now started slumping a little more under the weight of the big books that she has to carry. Not to mention she is almost always looking at the floor instead of up, as she doesn't want to meet the gaze of other students. However, when she's outside by herself, it becomes clear through her movements that she's more comfortable. Her steps are lighter, slower, and she spends more time looking up at the sky or the trees around her. If asked what her style is, she'd probably turn her head to the side confused. She's never paid too much attention to what all she wears, going for things that are comfy instead of flashy. Her wardrobe consists mostly of t shirts and jeans under her robes, but she also had a collection of oversized chunky sweaters that used to be her dad’s that she’d bust out in the winter time.

Personality

In part because she didn't grow up with a sibling, and had few friends due to her family's anxiety, Elspeth has picked up on a lot of her parents neuroses. She's quiet, awkward, and constantly worried that she's in someone else's way. Being a first year doesn't help in this regard, as she's regularly getting lost or two steps behind others in terms of knowing what to do.

One of her strongest desires is to develop some kind of confidence so that she could go out and just say what she really thinks and feels. But for now she thinks that's mostly just a dream, and can't figure out how other students are able to speak so freely without worrying about being judged by others.

All of that being said, she still finds being outdoors deeply freeing. So long as she's on her own there's something about being out in nature that helps her feel like she can just be herself. There's a deep trust she has in natural processes, knowing that bugs do what they're supposed to, and trees do as they're supposed to, and none of them particularly care if she trips or sneezes or makes a mistake. While in this way, she's observant, patient, deeply empathetic, and curious. Her curiosity stems less from wanting to know more than others around her, and instead seems to come from a place of genuine caring. She's curious because she wants to know the things she loves more fully, as a way to help them get what they need to thrive. So she researches butterflies not so she can just have facts about them to spout off and impress folks, but because she thinks its the respectful thing to do - to get to know the things you love.

Interests

Right now, most of Elspeth's hobbies revolve around her love of being outdoors and getting to know the local flora and fauna. Her mom gifted her a magical camera that she wants to try and use to document the different wildlife that is native to the Hogwarts grounds. Because magic film is pricey, though, she's also working on learning how to sketch. Her artistic skills aren't much to look at, yet, but it's one of the few hobbies she has where she's not self-conscious about not being good at it. She has a cheap notebook that she's been working through, just taking notes about what she's seen on her walks around the lake.

When it comes to magic, her greatest interests are in Herbology and Charms. Elspeth is most drawn to practical kinds of magic that help things grow and thrive. She's excited to take Care of Magical Creatures once she's old enough to.

Secretly, Elspeth absolutely LOVES super cute things. The sight of a spherical unicorn pillow? The feel of an especially floofy kitty? The idea of something very squat with big ol eyes? She becomes weak in the knees and giddy in a very silly way that she rarely, if ever, lets anyone in on.

Disinterests

As a mousy eleven year old, there are a number of things that make Elspeth deeply uncomfortable. When she hears kids her year talking about having crushes she gets this funny feeling in the pit of her stomach, like something is broken in her because she doesn't really have crushes at this point (though she wonders if she's supposed to and if she should try to have one to be normal). Because she's so quiet and easily made nervous around confident people, the idea of being in a duel or at a large party is also overwhelming to her. Lastly, while she wouldn't admit this out loud, she's secretly very afraid of basically all Slytherins and thinks they're all evil, even though the rational part of her brain knows that's not true.

Despite being placed in Ravenclaw, Elspeth has discovered over the course of her first year that she isn't the most focused student and truly dislikes long reading assignments. She prefers to learn in hands on ways, and so when given the tasks to sit and read from thick texts she'll often end up goofing off and not pay any attention to the work at hand.

Family Relationships

Elspeth has a loving relationship with her dad. Although he's a muggle, he's been with her mother for so long that he no longer seems like quite the fish out of water. Baking alongside him has always been one of her favorite things to do on the weekend. Because he helps supply the local cafe with all of its baked goods, he's often out of the house at odd hours in the early morning which means that she's rarely spent time with him at night. But their early morning time together, him waking her up to the smell of some pastry or danish, has always made her feel safe and loved by him. Is a bit of a goober, whose constant awe of magic always makes Rebecca giggle. Loves to camp and has taught Elspeth a number of wilderness survival skills.

✉ Letters Between Elspeth and her Parents

Elspeth also loves her mom, though their relationship is a little more complicated by the fact that her mother has homeschooled her. Rebecca is a bit of an anxious witch, haunted by the visions she has in her sleep of the future (though whether any of them have actually come to bear is a different story). She's shown her love for Elspeth through caring for her and working tirelessly to make sure that she's kept safe. From a young age Elspeth was aware that not all of her mother's worries were completely founded. Instead of rebelling against those restrictions, though, she realized that her mom was just trying her best. And so, Elspeth has always felt like one of her jobs as her mother's daughter was to help reassure her mom that everything was ultimately going to be okay. Her mother was in Hufflepuff while at Hogwarts and currently works odd jobs as a freelance magical repair person. Harbors intense disdain for their goblin heritage, and kept it a secret from Elspeth until Elspeth's grandmother showed up when she was 12 years old. Is deeply upset by Elspeth's decision to have a relationship with her.

Elspeth knows very little about her grandmother, having only met her just after she'd turned 12. She's old, though exactly how old is hard for Elspeth to tell. She wears her silvery hair up in a bouffant style that showcases her pointy ears and rounded forehead. While they haven't spoken much, Elspeth feels like she's a gently and generally trustworthy person. Carys is Elspeth's paternal/muggle grandmother. She lives in Cardiff, so Elspeth doesn't get to see her as often as she'd like, but the two of them get along swimmingly. Carys loves bringing a new sweet treat to Elspeth whenever she visits, and often talks about how proud she is of Alex for carrying on the family tradition of baking. She isn't aware of Elspeth or Rebecca's magical nature, as Alex didn't entirely trust that she could keep that information under wraps given that she's a bit of a gossip with the other ladies in her knitting circle. Her husband (Alex's father, and Elspeth's grandfather) passed away within the last few years of a heart attack at the age of 64.

Carolyn Hunt | Ravenclaw 2^nd Year

After meeting the night of the sorting ceremony and striking up a conversation about nerves and what classes they were going to, Elspeth immediately saw Carolyn as a housemate she could go to when she wasn't sure who around her wanted to hang out. The two have struck up conversations a number of times, with Carolyn revealing herself to be more level headed and rational to Elspeth's distractable whimsy. Most importantly, when she started to have a nervous breakdown after Blossom Ball, Carolyn was there to help her breathe through it and feel safe again.

Asteria Knight | Ravenclaw 2^nd Year

Despite sharing a dorm together, the two haven't spoken a ton yet. But, at the beginning of the year, hearing Asteria talking about her excitement for trying out for Quidditch inspired Elspeth to pursue her secret dream of being a Quidditch Beater. Now that the two of them are on their house team together, Elspeth's hoping she can learn more from the quiet, grounded, and focused Asteria.

Katrina Walker | Gryffindor 3^rd Year

Despite meeting accidentally in a bathroom while Katrina was having a (completely understandable) breakdown, the two have silently agreed to pretend that wasn't their first impressions of one another. Since then, Elspeth has actually sought out Katrina in large group settings as a person who helps her feel less nervous in the crowd..

Alina Rosier | Hufflepuff 2^nd Year

This isn't exactly a pair made in heaven, both relatively bad at their studies and masters of distraction. But when Alina could have gotten really annoyed with Elspeth's insistence on studying instead of going out and having fun, she got sweet and supportive instead. Elspeth remembers that and it means a lot to her.

Mars T'ien | Ravenclaw 2^nd Year

The quiet, cool Ravenclaw who has consistently intimidated Elspeth has revealed themselves to be a pretty kind person underneath. Elspeth is still getting to know Mars, but no longer feels completely frightened of going up to them and striking up a conversation, and she's hoping that Mars might be able to teach her how to find that quiet confidence in herself.

Cecily Quinn | Ravenclaw 4^th Year

While Cecily and Elspeth haven't directly interacted very much this year, Elspeth has seen her prefect around the school and looks up to her as a kind of responsible role model. She's looking forward to getting to know Cec better as a teammate on the Quidditch team this year, though she's also nervous about making a fool of herself on the broom.

Would Not Feel Comfortable Hanging Out With:

Cassandra Ironwoods | Slytherin 2^nd Year

E is absolutely intimidated and terrified by Cassandra and her confidence. After an unpleasant meeting in the rehearsal room, Elspeth works her hardest to try and avoid crossing Cassie's path.

Ivy Bellamy | Gryffindor 2^nd Year

They met under less than ideal circumstances, as Elspeth was already being bullied by Cassandra at the time, and Ivy appeared ready to join in. But Elspeth mistook her for Ana Beckett and proceeded to have a panic attack about the night of Blossom Ball. Now, she hopes to never see the girl again.

Anastasia Beckett | Gryffindor 3^rd Year

Is deeply scarred from having seen Ana on fire at the Blossom Ball. Elspeth is slightly morbidly curious about who she is, but mostly the sight of her would send Els running away.

Serena Towers | Hufflepuff 4^th Year

Although the two barely know each other, and don't even know one another's names, Elspeth is both forever indebted to and mortified of Serena, after being saved by her via broom at the Blossom Ball. Elspeth doesn't harbor any ill feelings about the Hufflepuff, but is still too raw from the psychological pain of it all to see Serena without feeling the fear of that night rushing back, as well as a deep insecurity that Serena views her as a burden that kept her from protecting more of her friends.
