Aida's Story: The Short Version

Aida Mòrsgor-Ama Ellwood is an albino, non-binary mage who seeks to liberate the abused and captive magical beasts of the world. Despite having a relatively recent goblin ancestor, Aida is still considered fully human, much to Aida's disgust. Torn between the reality of being a human in society and wanting to live freely like an untamed animal, Aida feels the most comfortable in the presence of non-humans and best friends, Alexander Varellion and Ileen Knight.

Aida did not have an easy entrance into the world of magic. After experiencing a series of traumatic events, the young white mage developed claustrophobia and undiagnosed schizophrenia while combatting periods of anorexia and recurring insomnia. Although Aida is habitually socially isolated, the mage's fundamentally caring and selfless heart make Aida pleasant company— so long as one can tolerate the bluntness of this pathological truthteller.

I Must Be Useful

Aida Mòrsgor-Ama Ellwood grew up as an orphan in Glenfinnan, a small hamlet in the Scottish Highlands, speaking both Scots Gaelic and English. Despite being an albino, the sun was no deterrent to heavily-cloaked Aida spending her youth outdoors. They learned how to ride horses and shepherd animals from an early age, and hard labor on the ranch paired with the wilds of the great outdoors built Aida into a rugged, socially-isolated child. On the rare occasions when they met other people, Aida was usually feared and ostracized due to their unusual appearance and strange rumors about their parents.

Aida’s foster parent, Sean, regarded Aida as a source of labor and something he could take his frustrations out on. As a result, Aida grew up strongly motivated to become useful and independent in order to not become an unwanted mouth to feed. After all, they had seen the fate of ranch animals that were no longer desired time and time again. The contrast between animals in the wild and those kept by humans was a constant influence on this child who grew up never feeling quite human. This led to Aida developing an animal instinct that no one else seemed to have or understand. This instinct made them particularly attuned to small cues given by people, animals, and the environment, and this skill became particularly useful for avoiding the brunt of Sean’s outbursts. Aida’s worst interaction with the squib was one fateful night that culminated in the death of a horse named Manticore, causing Aida to run away after setting all of the ranch animals loose.

On the run, Aida ended up in the streets of Glasgow just before their eleventh birthday. Receiving an invitation to Hogwarts Academy, Aida had no knowledge of their magical capabilities. Uncanny events involving Aida were never determined to be strictly magical in origin, such as the time they produced a calming spell when their horses confronted a wild kneazle.

1st Year at Hogwarts

Small Choices Can Have Far-Reaching Effects

Aida began their time at Hogwarts unable to intentionally cast spells. With a tendency to talk fast and ask many questions, many of which were unwittingly intrusive, Aida alienated a number of would-be friends. The only person who seemed to understand her at all was a Slytherin boy by the name of Alexander Varellion. Not long after meeting him, however, a series of events began to overturn Aida’s attempts to achieve stability in their new life at Hogwarts.

The Curse
Aida’s unravelling all began with the arrival of a letter that when read caused Aida to faint. Taken by a nearby stranger to the hospital, Aida awoke from the first of what would be a long series of terrible nightmares regarding their parents and the death of Manticore. As if the letter had been cursed, Aida’s nightmares would lead to a dramatic transformation of the child over the course of the following months. In search of resolution, Aida travelled to the Ministry of Magic only to discover that their long-lost parents had been sentenced to Azkaban. Increasingly unsettled by these events, Aida tried to find a home for themselves in the R.O.A.M. program and by helping Professor Griffith with the care of magical creatures. However, soon after, Griffith mysteriously disappeared– and just when Aida needed him the most. Aida forever after carried with her the first and last lesson Griffith ever gave her. Perhaps the most stabilizing force in Aida’s life was the growth of their friendship with Alexander.

The Blossoms
Aida learned of Griffith’s disappearance after attending the Blossom Ball with Alexander. What started as a charming secret event soon turned into a confrontation with vampyr mosps that were lured by the nectar of the event’s floral décor. Almost immediately students began to attack the mosps, including Alexander who began to cast incendio at an approaching mosp. Aida attempted to interrupt the boy’s cast by tackling him while simultaneously tearing away their floral boutonnieres, but his cast succeeded anyway along with attacks by several other students. Tearing off their new coat, Aida used it to extinguish the mosp. Reversing his aggressive stance, Alexander decided to help Aida by binding the creature inside the coat with a rope. The bound creature lashed out, however, injecting Aida with poison through a deep gash in their hand. Suddenly a smokescreen from a nearby battle wafted in and blocked out the remaining light, but Aida was able help guide Alexander out of the dark using a special dark talent. That is, Aida had developed the ability to “see” in the dark due to a spatially photographic memory and heightened senses developed over many years of visiting a cave when escaping from Sean. Dragging the mosp across the ground by the rope, Aida then met a cat-eyed stranger who gave them a flying broom for their escape. Though Aida and Alexander immediately flew to Professor Griffith's door for help in saving the mosp’s life, no one answered and the mosp died a slow and painful death. Alexander went with Aida to the Great Lake where they put the mosp into a watery grave.

Into the Downward Spiral
Aida’s worsening insomnia triggered full-blown claustrophobia as a result of the haunting visions of her parents’ and Manticore’s brutal captivity. After trying to elicit Alexander’s therapeutic services, Aida received no reply for many days due to a delay in mail service. Surrounded by apparently magical people, Aida had still never knowingly cast a spell, further aggravating insecurities. Fearing that they had alienated yet another potential friend, Aida sought solace at the edge of the Forbidden Forest where they constructed a swing. There, Aida met Dealla Prince, however, Aida’s insomnia continued and one day the young mage collapsed while on the swing.

Asleep beside the Forbidden Forest, Aida began to dream of the ghost of Manticore. After months of being wracked with guilt for involvement in the killing of the strong-willed Andalusian horse, Aida began to anthropomorphize Manticore into a figure known as the Undead King. Unable to awaken from the nightmare, Aida eventually was able to make some peace with the situation by swearing allegiance to the Undead King. After waking up Aida found that they now had the powers of spellcasting, which they would always cherish as a “gift from the Undead King.”

The Forbidden Forest
Despite Aida’s efforts to rise above their troubles, they continued to despair at the lack of Alexander’s reply. Wild-eyed and distraught, Aida followed Ravenclaw House’s prefect into the Forbidden Forest as he went off in search of clues about ongoing Hogwarts mysteries. Considering the endeavor almost certainly suicidal, Aida reassured themselves that unlike the time at the Ball, at least this time they would not be bringing Alexander into a life-threatening situation. Soon a whole murder of Ravenclaws was accompanying Prefect Pericles Dralt, and together they began examining hag dolls in the depths of the dark woods.

Aida discovered that a blue bird was trapped in a large spider web, but they decided that they could not free it because they had no reason to choose the life of the bird over that of a hungry spider, as well as because their intervention could bring an angry spider down upon the group. Before long, the group was attacked by vines, encountered a laughing gingerbread man, activated the horde of vicious hag dolls, and generally began setting the forest on fire. Unbeknownst to Aida, Alexander had followed them into the Forbidden Forest. As he began to be ensnared by spider webs the boy cast a fire onto the webs, causing the local acromantula to emerge and attack Pericles. Soon Pericles was encased in webs and about to be taken away by the giant spider.

Aida ran to help Pericles but fell hard as they were trying to cut the spider’s dragline. Their efforts to persuade the spider to not eat the boy only seemed to anger the beast further, so Aida became the spider’s next target after it was deceived by Pericles into thinking the boy was full of parasitic worms. Soon Aida was cocooned with webs, which was an ironic fate for the claustrophobic beast lover. Pericles was unable to deceive the spider any further, and Aida believed they were beginning to hallucinate Alexander’s voice. Wrenching themselves from the grip of despair, Aida cut themselves out of the cocoon with the pocket knife that they always carried. However, the spider still plunged its fangs into the child and injected them with venom, ready to eat them. Suddenly, Aida saw Alexander appear “like a Deus ex Machina” as he cast the spider into the flames with his magic. He continued to defend Aida from the acromantula as they were attacked by hag dolls. In time Aida fell unconscious, overcome by injuries (from when they fell when trying to save Peri, were cut by spider fangs, were poisoned by the spider, and were struck by two hag dolls).

Dealla Prince and River Dewlight joined Alexander in helping to save Aida as Professor Equinox arrived and frightened off the acromantula. Unconscious Aida began to dream about a white-haired general's interrogation while Aida was trapped in a spider web. Confronting truths they would not otherwise admit to themselves, Aida swore allegiance to the white general despite already having allied with the Undead King.

The Theft of Memory
Aida, Alexander, and Celynne Gray met in the kitchens and discovered that they'd had their memories wiped, surrounded by house elves. Aida realized that they had "lost time" that day, unable to account for several hours of their life. Worse, Alexander discovered that he could not remember several years of his life and began to question his reality. Aida stood with Alexander and tried to bring him reassurance and stability.

Promises Made
Aida and Alexander convened to plan a summer road trip. Dealla was meant to come but did not arrive. Meanwhile, Alexander and Aida began to talk about their problems. Aida explained what happened with the letter from their father and what they learned at the Ministry, while Alexander began to open up about his parents and the significance of his memory loss. Aida promised to help Alexander with recovering his memories (if he wanted). Aida also promised they would always remember for him in case the memory loss struck again.

Life Goes On...
Time passed, and Alexander seemed to be disappearing from Aida’s life. The days went by regardless. Aida struggled to maintain a connection to reality in the face of insomnia that haunted them unabated. The professors instituted a set of stricter rules and Aida lost any hope they had of being friendly with the faculty. As if symbolizing that loss of trust, Aida decided to pull a prank on one of the professors after having read about the Mòrsgor-Ama familiy's Border Reiver ancestry.

Aida maintained a friendship with Dealla and crossed swords with a new ally, Ileen Knight. They also met new and old acquaintances at other social gatherings and it seemed that the only place they could get any sleep was in the Room of Requirement. However, despite Aida’s efforts to have meaningful friendships other than Alexander’s, in the end no one noticed that Aida was wasting away. In the wake of the House Elf Incident, Aida could no longer trust food from Hogwarts to not poison them or cause memory loss. Aida was caught between a need to eat and a promise to always remember for Alexander, in addition to being addled with insomnia, so Aida’s body began to grow thinner and thinner. In a last ditch effort to get emotional support, Aida tried to befriend a toad-gathering boy by the lake. Yet, this ill-fated meeting resulted in Aida concluding that they would only hurt others by trying to get their support. The only problem with that was that Aida did not want Alexander to be truly alone.

2nd Year at Hogwarts

No One Noticed

Stripped of their ability to use the Room of Requirement for sleep, Aida’s reality continued to crumble over the course of what could have been an uneventful, even peaceful, summer. Aida continued to engage in social interactions and even befriended a peculiar desert owl, but Aida’s interactions with others remained casual as no one noticed what was becoming of them. Aida even joined the Ravenclaw Quidditch team in an effort to fix their strategic mind on becoming stronger, but during the off season the most they could do was observe the game between Durmstrang and Hogwarts. When Aida met with Professor Kibitzer in the hopes of having divination bring some kind of resolution about the fate of their parents (a major driver behind Aida’s nightmarish insomnia), the professor fed Aida a lie to cover up for the fact that she really did not know. This confirmed Aida’s suspicion that they could not trust professors or grown-ups in general.

The Breaking Point
After several months of failing to save themselves and receiving no support from her social circle, Aida’s deterioration reached its limits. Aida no longer could tell the difference between insomniac hallucinations, reality, and dreams. Having no good explanation for their own memory loss, Aida began to wonder if they had been living a double life. Had Aida been responsible for Griffith’s disappearance, or even those of other professors? Where had Alexander been for all of these months? Aida’s exhaustion-warped brain concluded that at minimum, they had somehow killed Alexander. After all, they were still guilt-stricken over her involvement in the deaths of Manticore and the mosp, and they still blamed themselves for the absence of their parents. Death was an all-too convenient explanation for the disappearances of so many around them, especially for one as dear as Alexander. Naturally, Aida vowed to learn the forbidden art of time magic in order to bring back Alexander, no matter the cost. It just so happened that Valentin Schnell stumbled into the mess, which lead to Aida deciding to train with him in order to become strong enough to save Alexander.

Reaching out for Reality
Aida now had a reason to try to piece themselves back together– to undo their killing of Alexander Varellion. In dreams Aida began to confront their dilemmas, but in reality Aida was still a ghost of their former self. Climbing a hill in the hopes of gaining some perspective on these issues, Aida encountered Ileen, much as they had done on Ileen's birthday. Though Ileen had not known Aida long enough to have noticed their terrible transformation, Aida was still so shockingly skeletal that their condition caught the eye of the would-be healer. Ileen and Aida promised to try to avoid dying and Ileen helped Aida stop starving to death.

Finding You
Aida discovered that Alexander was still alive and they began a journey across the UK. Aida and their friends convened to journey to Aida's secret base. Upon returning to Hogwarts Aida saw their first real thestrals, but was still able to sleep due to the Room of Requirement. Their first morning back, Aida worked on securing a new food source by taking up fishing. Though they had resolved several issues over the summer, Aida still had not overcome claustrophobia upon returning to the indoor environment of Hogwarts, however. They continued to value her friends and tried to help them whenever they had problems.

When Aida had to confront the consequences of quitting quidditch and still interacting with Valentin Schnell, Aida went outside (even though it was after curfew) and met Ileen next to a special tree, further cementing the bond between them.

Aida went to the Fall Ball Masquerade under a cloak of invisibility and confronted feelings about deception and growing up, which led to joining the dueling club in order to not sink to the level of unreliable adults and instead train for an eventual confrontation with whomever had stolen time from Alexander and themselves. Aida lovingly attended her friends' duelling matches in order to provide support. Yet, relations between Aida and their best male friends, Alexander and Valentin, began to change as the fates of both began to shift.

Dark Side of the Moon
Aida met another pale wizard in the library whose flagrant attitudes inspired Aida to continue to be true to themselves even if it made them ugly. While Alexander's influence and the beguiling power of the Cloak of Invisibility offered repeated temptations to Aida to grow deceptive, Aida still resolved to maintain honesty even upon threat of death. Yet, Aida's brutal straightforward attitude often backfired, pressing the mage again and again back into self-imposed isolation, which led to an obsessive need to become a powerful duelist, lest they be unreliable like the grown-ups by failing to keep sacred promises. Aida began focusing everything into self improvement, yet, however much Aida tried to help Alexander, the boy still grew increasingly distant as he began attempting to seduce a Slytherin girl by the name of Marion Davenport.

Despite Aida's attempts to grow strong, whatever progress they were making was too difficult to see and they ended up falling from their swing and having to check themselves into the hospital. After escaping, Aida met with a boy at the Great Lake as Aida tried to work through a newfound retrograde amnesia caused by their concussion near the swing.

Although Aida's amnesia faded, their battered mental condition continued progressing into undiagnosed schizophrenia. Strange events became hard to distinguish from hallucinations. One day Aida was heading up to the owlery to care for their owl when they discovered something had gone terribly wrong there, but the mystery remained unsolved, like so many other pieces of the mage's life that seemed to fail to fit together. Later, Aida attended a special set of trials in the hopes of improving their training, but this only led to more disgust for Aida's human peers. By the end of Aida's second year, the fissure between the white mage and other humans had swollen to the size of a ravine.

3rd Year at Hogwarts

Strange Reality

Sown in the soil of Aida's social isolation and watered by bouts of insomnia, the voices of the White General and the Undead King became persistent hallucinations that Aida would have to endure as a part of daily life, including during duels.

After having ruined the only dress they had ever made for themselves in the swing incident during the previous schoolyear, Aida grew tired of stressing about the opinions of others. As Aida resolved to be more true to themselves, Aida decided to "come out" about their non-binary orientation and changed to using "they/their" pronouns after adopting a new short hairstyle. While the concussion and temporary amnesia had once pained the albino mage, over the course of months of recovery they ultimately allowed Aida to pass a tipping point in changing how they expected to live in society. In a symbolic act of seeking rebirth, Aida then cast their name into the Goblet of Fire.
