Short history summary:

Vincent was born on August the 18th 2008 in Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland, where he grew up as the only child in a one-parent family. His father Connor owned a traditional Scottish whiskey distillery called Glendith Distillery, which was founded by his father, Vincent’s grandfather. Connor died in a tragic accident only three months after Vincent had been born. Vincent’s mother Maria, who became a widow in the blink of an eye, works as an editor-in-chief for a major newspaper. Having to mostly rely on himself, Vincent developed into an independent, thoughtful yet bright lad with a strongly developed personal view on the world. His hobbies are photography, hiking, reading and writing. Either solo or with one of his two best friends Mia and William.

Parents:

Vincent’s parents had met in May 2001 while both coincidentally doing an internship at The Sunday Post, a Scottish newspaper. Connor, who was employed at the financial department, was sent to the editor’s office to inquire about a specific declaration that had been filed by a M. Brenner. It was a £100,000 bill for a piece of word processing software, which was a ridiculously high amount for something like that. The editor-in-chief pointed Connor to the person that had filed the declaration and that turned out to be Maria, Connor’s wife-to-be and Vincent’s mother, who tried to learn the tricks of the trade from the highly acclaimed editor-in-chief. Connor and Maria hit it off pretty much straight away, eventually resulting in Maria emigrating to Scotland and them getting married on September the 18th of 2006. Two years later, on August the 18th of 2008, Vincent was born.

Parents' personal details:

Father Connor d’Arque, Mai the 27th 1980 – December the 11th 2008.

Connor was born and raised in Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland. He was the oldest son of Guillaume d’Arque and Meredith Short. Guillaume (January the 31st, 1949) is a Belgian immigrant who moved from the small town of Paliseul in Wallonia to Dunfermline to start a life as a whisky distiller in an old distillery he had bought and, in honor of his wife, renamed to Glendith Distillery. Meredith (June the 12th, 1950) is a forester’s daughter from Stonehaven, Scotland. His two siblings are an older brother, Sean (married to Aileen) and a younger sister, Catriona (single).

Connor has studied business administration with the intention to one day succeed his father as owner of Glendith Distillery which he had so carefully established and built up over the years. Next to that he spent a year in Aberlour Distillery in Aberlour, where one of the best single malts in the world is distilled, to be initiated in the world of whisky distilling. At his 25th birthday, in 2005, his father symbolically gave him the key to the property, making Connor effectively his successor as CEO of Glendith Distillery. In the three years following he managed to build on the foundation his father, Vincent’s grandfather, had laid, making Glendith Distillery a respected distillery with a rapidly growing reputation. Especially after he had developed a new recipe for a unique flavor of single malt, he lovingly named Glendith Marbren. When in 2008 Vincent was born, his life seemed complete. And then fate struck. While in Austria to validate a huge export deal he went on a solo hike across one of the nearby Alps. The exact details of what happened during that hike were never completely clear, but it was assumed he got surprised by an avalanche that had started higher up the mountain, dragging him down into a valley where his body was found the next day.

Since his father was a camera shy man, Vincent was left with very little mementos to remember him by. There is in fact only one single picture with both Vincent and his father in it, which was taken right after Vincent was born. A copy of it had a prominent place on the mantelpiece in his house, another one had found a place on the wall behind the mahogany bar in the distillery and Vincent kept a copy of it close to him at any time, in an antique pocket watch that had belonged to his father. The original negative of it was held by his mother in the safe in her study. This was the primary reason for Vincent to take up photography, which eventually grew into his most favored hobby.

Mother Maria Brenner, June the 7th, 1981.

Maria was born in Zoetermeer, Holland as only child of Steven Brenner, an orthopedic surgeon and Anna Brenner-Dijkstra, owner of a flower shop. She studied communications and journalism in Utrecht and she now works as an editor-in-chief at the Scottish branch of The Times, a UK-wide quality newspaper.

His mother did all she could to provide him with all he needed, what she accomplished was nothing short of a miracle in Vincent’s eyes. He had always figured she had too many on her plate to act as a father figure for Vincent, juggling being a mother, an employee, a friend and a volunteer at the local church all at the same time, while also having to deal with the loss of the love of her life. Nevertheless, according to Vincent she did a terrific job. Whatever spare time she had first and foremost was spent with him as she tirelessly tried to give him the best possible youth. No small feat, and Vincent admired her greatly for her courage and strength, promising himself he’d repay her for it as soon as he could.

Other family:

Uncle Sean d’Arque, born on October the 13th, 1979. Brother of Connor, married to Aileen.

Aunt Aileen McGrath, born on June the 29th, 1980. Sister in law of Connor, married to Sean.

Aunt Catriona d’Arque, born on February the 2nd 1984. Sister of Connor.

Appearance:

Vincent stands 5 feet and 1 inch tall, making him a little taller than the average boy at his age. He is slim, sinewy built with dirty blond, long locks, steel blue eyes and a fair complexion. He is usually casually dressed in jeans, a shirt and either sneakers or hiking boots. His hair is mostly tied together in a ponytail, but only because that is more convenient. He prefers them loose.

Personality:

Vincent mostly had to rely on himself, due to his father passing away when Vincent was just three months and his mother having to work hard to provide for the both of them. This made him into an independent, thoughtful yet bright lad with a strongly developed personal view on the world and the goals he wants to achieve in it. Rather than pleasing people for the wrong reasons he chooses to be honest and direct, which is not always valued by others, getting him into trouble from time to time. Though easygoing he is usually a little cautious towards new people, only opening up when he feels safe around them. His true colors however are only shared with and known to those he considers his true friends, which are as rare as water in a desert.

Despite growing up without a dad, he didn't really miss him as a person, after all he had never known him, but he definitely missed a father figure in his life. The stories he heard his class mates tell about where their father went with them, what he taught them, playing sports with him – he would have given anything to be able to tell a story about his father playing football, going to the movies or doing anything at all with him. Even if he was only given the one opportunity to do so. His mother tried her best to take that on role, but as much as Vincent appreciated her efforts and admired her for trying, it still wasn't the same.

Hobbies:

Despite having a serious taste for reading, almost exclusively fiction in all of its appearances, and writing stories, mostly with a mysterious touch in a variety of forms, Vincent’s true passion is photography. He owns a black-and-silver Nikon F2SB analog SLR with a standard 36-72 series E lens and a 35 mm series E macro lens. Even at only 11 years of age he is a devoted photographer, there’s nothing he likes more than grab his camera and simply go out on a hike to try and find whatever scene worth capturing he encounters, be it a landscape or the simple beauty of a dragonfly drying its wings in the sun on a blade of grass. His mother would occasionally grumble as he asked her to have yet another role of film developed, but she was actually just proud her son had found a hobby that made him happy and which he was good at. As an added bonus, photography offered him the opportunity to flee from real life, much like reading and writing did. Not that he needed that often, not at all even, but it was certainly nice to have the option when needed.

Although his most favored subject is undoubtedly insects, with butterflies coming out on top due to their gorgeous colors and intricate, delicate anatomy, the most beautiful image he ever shot was not of a living creature. The in his eyes best picture ever was that of a heart shaped, blood red rose petal that had fallen in the bright green grass below the bush it had grown on. The dew drops on it, left behind overnight as the warm, humid air hit its cooled surface, were formed as perfect circles arranged in a heart shape, matching the shape of the petal itself. The moment the crepuscular rays, by Vincent referred to as God’s Eye, hit the drops, the light ricocheted from them, creating tiny rainbows his camera, he still had no idea how exactly, captured to perfection. Up until today he considered it plain luck he managed to capture it.

School is Vincent’s least favored pastime, he considers it a necessary evil which he in no way can avoid or skip. Although his grades are above average he fails to see the point in learning all the general, in his eyes useless subject matter that is thrown his way in school. He prefers researching things himself, which allows him to study only what piques his interest in any way. His interests span a wide range of subjects, from philosophy to mystery.

Vincent is destined to take over Glendith distillery when he has grown up, something he would be very proud to achieve. His aim is to follow the same learning path his father had taken and continue what his father and grandfather before him had started.

Social:

Though certainly a social boy, he has enough friends and is generally considered a welcome companion, he prefers to stick to himself rather than meddling with others. He is very picky where it comes to true friends. He only has two, Mia May and William Bear, so far the only people, apart from his mother, he’d take a bullet for and vice versa. The three of them share the same interests, making them virtually inseparable and never far apart. They even live within a few hundred yards from each other.

Vincent values his family more than anything, he has an ironclad bond with his mother, who has taught him everything he needed to know and then some. Although she generally let him be the child he was expected to be at his age, including all mischief and quirks, she also made an effort to raise him like a true classic gentleman next to that. She taught him manners, etiquette and, gradually, introduced him to formal dance and ball protocols and taught him the fine art of ballroom dancing. Even though that was something he had never considered an asset, he happily cooperated, if anything because it made his mother happy.
