black plain work robes (black), standard model
pointed hat (black)
pair of protective gloves
winter cloak (black with silver fastenings)
Additionally, all clothes should carry the pupil’s name tag at all times. All students are required to wear their uniform while attending classes, eating meals, and studying in all areas of the castle and on the grounds. While the hats are a required purchase, they are not mandatory every day wear, and more commonly donned on special occasions and more formal events such as the sorting ceremony, holiday meals, and funerals.

School robes are loose-fitting outer garments that reach the ankles, have wide sleeves, and a collar. They do not open at the front, but have a few buttons around the neck area, and must be pulled on over the head to be put on. Due to their high neck collars, fully closing fronts, and long sleeves, any clothes worn underneath are not visible. On the left side of the chest, all robes are adorned with the Hogwarts insignia- upon Sorting, this is magically transformed into the crest of each student’s respective house.
Seasonal Attire
In addition to their robes, all students must purchase a standard winter cloak. These are all black with silver fastenings and have no house identifying colors or markings. There are also several permitted accessories for wear during cold weather months and during competitive house events, such as Quidditch.

Due to the extremely bitter Scottish winters, a scarf worn during any of the aforementioned occasions in the student’s house colors is allowed. Any other colors for winter accents are condoned only after school hours. Hats, gloves, and earmuffs are also allowed, however, they are not to be had on in classes, unless the class is taking place outside (i.e. CoMC and while crossing the grounds to the Herbology greenhouses). They are also encouraged to be worn during trips to Hogsmeade.

In the fall, the same rules apply, however, they are not as strictly enforced since the temperatures are not as averagely cold as in winter months. It is expected that at this time, if students are especially cold, that they will start wearing extra undergarments under their robes.

Although Scotland has a cold climate, during the spring, it can get quite warm, so robes woven out of a lighter material are allowed during class time. However, they look about the same as the winter/fall robes, just a bit thinner.
Formal Wear
Typically, when attending more formal events such as school balls, weddings, and funerals, girls were permitted to wear age appropriate gowns and boys were required to wear dress robes. Dress robes are a formal variety of robes worn by witches and wizards for special occasions, and can vary in style and color as much as everyday robes. Historically, students in their fourth year and above were required to have dress robes to wear to formal events. However, we now allow for the freedom of dress in both male and female students- this includes formal muggle attire such as suits, tuxedos, etc. While muggle dress is permitted, dress robes are still allowed, and even encouraged, for those desiring to adhere more closely to wizarding tradition. Dress robes can be purchased in Diagon Alley in Madam Malkin's Robe's for All Occasions, as well as the second hand robe shop.
Accessories
Any pupil who holds a position for which a badge is given, such as Prefects, are expected to display them pinned to the outside of their robes in an easily visible location at all times. While students must keep their robes on during their lessons at all times, that doesn’t mean they cannot personalize them. Accessories are permitted, such as jewelry, ribbons/bandanas around arms and/or hats, scarves for hair and necks, and pins as long as they do not cover your house crest are allowed, but not limited to on one’s person. However, dangling accessories are not allowed when there are possible mishaps that can occur because of them, I.E. for the wellbeing of students while attending certain classes such as Potions, Care of Magical Creatures, Herbology, and DADA. These items would be available for purchase in Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade, and parents would send them to their children once they’ve been sorted or the kids themselves would be able to get them via owl order.
Off Time and After School Hours
On the weekends, as well as after school hours, students are permitted to wear any clothes they like, as long as they are age appropriate. While we do not want to police student’s clothing too extensively, or stifle creative expression, if there is too much skin exposed (for example) said student will be sent back to their dormitories to change immediately. The term ‘appropriate’ also pertains to any media printed on clothing, such as graphic tee shirts. No student will be allowed to wear any clothing decorated with offensive terminology or imagery. Other instances in which non-school uniform attire will be permitted are during visits to Hogsmeade or during formal events- such as a Halloween costume ball or end of the year graduation party.
Notes from Staff
Movie Adaptations and How Our's Differ
Our uniforms maintain the identifying mark of the house crest, but are otherwise plain black. There are no house colored linings, stripes on the sleeves, or uniform worn or exposed underneath. As opposed to the ones in the movies, ours also have a higher collar and do not zip up or open up in the front. Instead, there are a few buttons at the top near the neck (think : polo shirt style).

Please note: The lore we base ourselves off is aligned with what is described in the books. We agree with the visual representation of the school robes found in both the images shared in the post above as well as the link below.
