Early evening, about the time the barbecue starts

The summer had only just begun, but one thing was already certain- it wasn't normal, or even a little bit close to normal.
The invitation letter that Marshal had received following his eleventh birthday had informed him and his parents that Hogwarts, School of Witchcraft and Wizardry was holding some sort of summer event that he was welcome to attend in order to familiarize himself with the people there, as well as the way they did things. Or something like that.
Diagon Alley had been plenty strange, for sure. And the books his parents had purchased about magic, Hogwarts history and more had contained a lot of information.
Having read some of those books, Marshal had felt prepared to face this newly discovered world of magic.
How dreadfully unprepared he had truly been.

The train ride was fine, aside from the fact that he had to walk through a wall to get to the correct platform. Discombobulation didn't even begin to describe his confusion when he had found himself in an entirely different space on the other side of that wall.
Then, of course, there were the chocolate frogs that had minds of their own. The act of putting what appeared to be a live creature in his mouth had been strange indeed. But the wonderful taste had helped him get past that reservation fairly quickly.
Once the train had reached its destination, he had gathered with the other students while the people who were apparently in charge had debriefed them all on the rules, as well as some of the events that were going to take place over the time of the Summer Camp.
Following that, Marshal had found his way to his designated tent, which had turned out to be a lot larger on the inside than it looked from the outside.

While all these magical things excited him more than he could explain, Marshal couldn't help but be a little overwhelmed by all of it.
His whole life, he had believed that magic, wizards and fanciful creatures were all fake, made up by creative minds around the world. A few months ago, a wall was just what it appeared to be- a wall. Not some portal to another area.
Normally, he preferred to be around other people. He enjoyed it, and it helped keep his mind off of other things. But even extroverted weirdos need some alone time every once in a while. This was one of those times for Marshal.
Feeling the need to get away from the others for a little while, he had found a bench set a little ways off from the tents where the students slept. And there he sat, watching as the sun grew closer to the distant horizon

He fingered the rope necklace around his neck.
"Wish you could have seen all this, sis," he mumbled quietly, though nobody was there to listen.
His gaze shifted to the gigantic stadium that could be easily seen from where he sat. It was like no sports stadium he had ever seen before. But of course that was because the sport played there was like nothing normal 'muggles' could ever dream of.
Flying on brooms, sentient balls, occasional death. Having read about Quidditch, it was one of the things that he was most excited to see. It sounded improbable and spectacular.
Marshal had always loved playing sports, but the skills he had learned from playing muggle games would serve no purpose in a game like Quidditch.
His newest dream was to be a great Quidditch player, though he supposed he needed a broom to accomplish that dream.
"When I get a broom, I'll fly over the clouds," he continued speaking, talking to his sister, hoping she could hear him somehow. "Maybe that will be closer to you than anywhere else." He let out a sigh and closed his eyes.
He heard commotion coming from the camp, and figured that they must be starting the barbecue he had heard about.
He supposed that he should head over soon, but he wasn't ready just yet.

They finally arrived at the Quidditch Stadium.
This must be somewhere in London, but definitely not near Kensington——her home.

Lindsey sighed, and took a look around. It’s good that her mother finally let her to come to the camp——but not good when she finally arrived.
She was originally hoping that she could have more fun if she went here, but the Hufflepuff soon found herself wrong. Alina wasn’t coming, Clifton wasn’t coming, Alexa wasn’t coming (probably), Leonard wasn’t coming…she had no idea where was Lizzie (Lindsey believed she was somewhere) too. Why she tried so hard to persuade her mother to let her go to this lame summer camp? She’d better go home, and visit one or two her friends. Definitely better wandering around here alone.

Lindsey wasn’t very happy with her tentmates too. What’s the point to hang out with a loud Gryffindor first year, a timid Ravenclaw first year and a nervous Hufflepuff first year? The only second year, Theseus, hadn’t arrived yet. Gosh. He’d better be quick, or his friendly Hogwarts Express and Tea Errand acquaintance would die of boredom.

She heard the barbecue was starting. Lindsey wasn’t very hungry, and she did not want to go either. She had already been bored to smile charmingly to everyone near and say hello to them. Plenty of acquaintances last year. But few people regarded her as a true friend.
Her friends? You could count Lizzie in, as her closest so far——but just close. Alina, Alexa and Clifton were just Lindsey’s casual friends. And Leonard…? She liked him a lot, but Lindsey couldn’t tell if he shared the same feeling after that small incident.

The badger sighed again. She took another good look around. Where should she go?

Lindsey suddenly spotted a bench. It’s somewhere a little way off the camping place.
Pretty nice. She thought.
While heading off, Lindsey saw a boy sitting there. He seemed muttering something alone, while seemed closed his eyes too.
Lindsey probably hadn’t seen him before. Maybe he’s new here?
Whether the boy’s new or not, to be frank, Lindsey did not care much. As long as he’s not as boring and annoying like her first-year tentmates, then that’s fine.

She walked slowly towards the boy.
“Um hi…may I sit here?”

“Um hi…may I sit here?”

The sweet voice penetrated his somber thoughts, pulling him out of his reverie. He opened his eyes and was greeted by a brilliant sight- a girl walking towards him, the fading sunlight framing her in such a way that made her golden-brown hair glow.
The warm light surrounding her slim figure somehow accentuated the soft chocolate gaze that now rested upon him.
For a moment, he didn't reply; he simply stared at the girl with a mixture of admiration and lack of comprehension.
His initial glimpse of her seemed so angelic that, just for that first moment, he found himself wondering if he might actually be seeing some sort of heavenly being, and if so, why exactly it was happening. Was he about to die? Maybe he was already dead? Or he was simply having a vision; no big deal.
That line of consideration only last a moment, however, as his brain recovered from the immediate shock of the situation, and he recognized the newcomer as a girl, a fellow student around his own age, rather than an angel.
He smiled. Even better.

Not bothering to look away or even pretend he hadn't been staring, he scooted over to give her more room to sit, the welcoming grin still on his face.
"By all means," he said, gesturing at the empty spot beside him. "A guy like me should count himself lucky to sit next to someone as dazzling as you."
As forward as the comment might seem, that was simply Marshal's personality. He wasn't shy, in any sense of the word, and never had a shortage of compliments ready to whip out.
He just didn't seem to have the ability to refrain from letting a girl know when he appreciated her beauty.
Of course some girls didn't receive the praise as well as others, but that was perfectly fine with Marshal. It never hurt him too badly to get harshly rejected, and he figured that all it could do for the girl was reinforce her self confidence. And if she felt the same way about him, well... then it was a win for everybody involved.

"I'm pretty certain we haven't met before," he continued. "I would definitely remember if we had. Then again, I know basically nobody here, so it's not surprising." He held out a hand, offering to shake in greeting. "My name is Marshal. May I have the pleasure of knowing yours?"
He was using as much charm as he knew how, from his smile to the tone of his voice.
He really did hope she still chose to sit down. It would be rather unfortunate if she turned around and walked back the other way.

“By all means,” the boy said. “A guy like me should count himself lucky to sit next to someone as dazzling as you.”
Dazzling…Lindsey didn’t know what to say. Dah. What’s called “dazzling”? No matter what it really meant, Lindsey knew clearly that she’s only pretty instead of gorgeous. This boy’s gonna be interesting.
She took a good look of him. Light yellow blond hair and hazel eyes. Lindsey caught a glimpse of mischief with friendliness in those pretty eyes. But he seemed a lot more friendlier than mischievous.
A good looking boy. Thought Lindsey. Better than most of the boys (important: most of) she had met previously in Hogwarts.
“I'm pretty certain we haven't met before,” (——yeah I’m very certain too)
“I would definitely remember if we had. Then again, I know basically nobody here, so it's not surprising.” (——so this boy’s new? He seemed pretty mature. But definitely better than my first year tentmates.)
“My name is Marshal. May I have the pleasure of knowing yours?” (——Marshal. A nice name, is’t it?)
Lindsey sent out a friendly smile. “Oh hello Marshal——I’m Lindsey.”
Lindsey. Not a too bad name. Except Mercury teased her for her name’s meaning——the lake, she still liked it. Caelan praised it as pretty. And Leonard seemed accepting it. So, Lindsey was pretty thankful for her name to her parents.
She said down beside Marshal casually. Sitting beside others were always a pleasure for her, for it’s relaxing and better for her to talk.
“Are you new here?” Lindsey asked curiously. “I mean…new to Hogwarts.”
She knew that some students here were new. Their Huffle Prefect Annie had even created a tent for the newcomers, and Lindsey somehow really wanted to join that tent. Well…Although most residences there were first students, at least Annie’s a third year and they’d already met before.
Lindsey would love to make some new friends, as long as they were interesting. She’d sadly made a bunch of acquaintances, but no one considered her as a good friend. If you had to count, then her friends were only Lizzie, Alina, Alexa, Clifton, and Leonard. Not a very long list, and all of them were casual friends. Maybe Lizzie and Leonard considered her closer, but…dah.
“By the way, I’m in Hufflepuff. Soon be a second year.” she said friendly to Marshal, whom she now believed as a first year.
“Have you got the idea of which house you’d be sorted into?”
Sorting was one of the most important things to new Hogwarts students. Most of them did not have a clear mind for this, although some knew clearly. For those who had a clear mind, mostly were Purebloods.
Marshal was definitely not a pure blood. Lindsey did not remember one named “Marshal” from those long lists of pureblood families kept in the Linfield Manor.
Anyway. Hope he’s not loud, nor timid. Thought the young Springhall badger.
Also, hope he’d be a Hufflepuff.

“Oh hello Marshal——I’m Lindsey," said the girl, giving him a smile.

A smile, he thought happily. A smile is a good start.
"Lindsey..." he said slowly, as if trying the name out, then nodded, that soft smile still on his lips. "That's a great name. So good to meet you."
His liking for the situation grew considerably when Lindsey sat down, taking the open space that he had created for her on the bench. He rested both hands on the edge of the seat, placed on either side of him, and leaned slightly forward, making himself comfortable as he prepared to have what he hoped would be a deep and meaningful conversation; or at least one that didn't end up with him getting slapped.

Once she was settled, Lindsey took a turn asking the questions, "Are you new here? I mean...new to Hogwarts."
He nodded again. "That's right, I'm brand new here. In fact, I'm new to magic as a whole. Before I got my invitation letter a few months ago, I thought that stories of witches and wizards were just made up, all in people's imaginations. So all of this," he made a vague gesture in the air, indicating the summer camp and all the new things he had experienced, "is really weird to me still." He leaned a little bit closer and added, "Walking into a wall is supposed to give you a headache, not lead somewhere new like you passed through a doorway. Or at least that's what I used to believe." He shrugged.
Lindsey then said something that confused him.
“By the way, I’m in Hufflepuff. Soon be a second year,” she said. “Have you got the idea of which house you’d be sorted into?”
Hufflepuff? That sounded like some sort of odd name for a head cold or... something. And sorted into a house?
Turning his head to stare into the distance, he tried to remember if he knew anything about this. After a few moments, a small bit of memory detached itself from the mess that was his brain and made itself known to him. He did seem to recall reading something about the different 'houses' at Hogwarts in the history book he had gotten, but he had sort of skimmed over that part. Quidditch had been a much more interesting topic to read about at the time. Now he felt as though he had showed up to a test without having studied any of what he was supposed to.
He rolled his eyes at himself. That was typical.

Accepting that he was not going to remember much of anything concerning the subject, he shrugged again, looking back at Lindsey.
"To be honest, I have no idea what you mean," he said apologetically. "They'd probably put me in the house that has less things to break than any of the others," he added, thinking of the 'houses' as literal structures that students lived in. He didn't know any better. "What's a Hufflepuff?"

“Before I got my invitation letter a few months ago, I thought that stories of witches and wizards were just made up, all in people's imaginations. So all of this is really weird to me still.” Marshal said to her.
So he’s a muggle born student. Thought Lindsey. Great.
It’s rather weird that she had always been adoring the muggle world. She loved the movies, and those novels, and finally, math and physics. Lindsey sometimes still regret for not continuing her muggle school work.
She grinned. “Lumos.” she said.
A flash of light came out from the tip of her beech wood wand.
“Believe it now?” She turned to Marshal. “Nox.” The light disappeared.
“Have you done your Diagon Alley shopping yet?” Lindsey continued. “If you haven’t, then it would be interesting——especially the wand part. Actually I really found it amazing.”
Amazing. Yep. Imagine walking in a small shop and looked at the shelves. The shelves that contained wands.
She realized that her question about house was rather inappropriate suddenly. But maybe Marshal heard it from some other students? Like, his tent mates?
“To be honest, I have no idea what you mean,” the boy said to her, rather apologetically.
“Ah, so it’s like a class in the muggle schools——no, not a room. It’s only a class that have a name.”
She thought for a while, and continued. “Um, so we have four houses——four classes. Each grade’s students are sorted into these four houses at the beginning at the school year. You cannot change your house after sorted by an enchanted hat. The sorting hat.”
“The four houses are, Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin. They were started by the four founders of Hogwarts, Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw and Slazar Slytherin. They were all great wizards.”
“Gryffindor is know as the house of chivalry and bravery, while the Hufflepuffs are loyal and kind. Ravenclaw house is proud for its wisdom and creativity, and Slytherin gathers ambitious and cunning ones.”

This was exactly what you would read from the numerous books. Lindsey thought. It would be easy to introduce them to a muggle born student, but wizard children would consider it not very accurate.
“Don’t feel pressured or something.” she smiles encouragingly. “Even most wizardborns don’t have a clue of their house before sorting.”
“Also, don’t be perceived——not all Slytherins are evil, not all Hufflepuffs are idiots, not all Ravenclaws are nerds, and not all Gryffindors are impulsive.”

After introducing, she waited for Marshal’s reply. Was she clear enough?

He eyed the pointed stick that Lindsey pulled out with fascination. He hadn't seen a wand before, but he now knew that wizards and witches carried them, and he assumed that this was one.
"Lumos," Lindsey said. No sooner had the word left her mouth than a white light appeared out of nowhere on the tip of the wand, as if it was a bright light bulb.
Marshal's eyes widened for a moment, then narrowed as he leaned in for a closer look.
"Nox." As soon as the light had appeared, it was gone. Now that he could see it better without the light in his eyes, Marshal continued to survey the object. But for all he could tell, it was still just a fancy stick.
"Whoa," he breathed, amazed. "That's awesome. I guess I'd be crazy to not believe it at this point, but it still feels like I'm dreaming."
She then asked him if he had done his shopping at Diagon Alley yet, which he had learned about from the instructions enclosed in the letter with his invitation.
He shook his head in response. "I haven't yet, but I'm looking forward to it. It would be great to actually own some magical things." He glanced sidelong at Lindsey with a sly half-grin. "I'm guessing bibbidi-bobbidi-boo isn't a real thing?"

He then listened as Lindsey launched into an explanation of the four different houses, changing the wording to 'classes' instead. As she went on, he started to gain a bit more of an understanding. The different houses weren't actual structures that you spent most of your time in, they were just... something else.
Apparently students were placed into different houses by the judgement of a sorting hat.
He chewed his bottom lip. His fate during his time at Hogwarts would be decided by a hat? That hardly seemed fair; what if the hat thought it looked terrible on him, and therefore hated him? Could they even make a hat think? Did this actually make no sense, or was he just dumb? Most likely the latter, but oh well.

She continued by giving him a brief history of the houses, and who founded each of them. He took care to pay attention, but couldn't help feeling like he was already in school again. He didn't know if his brain could handle a history lesson in the summer.
What she said about the qualifications for the houses did intrigue him, though.
Thinking about it, he tried to picture which of the four he might end up in. According to most of his friends, the wisdom of Ravenclaw certainly didn't seem to fit him. Of course he thought otherwise, but maybe the sorting hat was a jerk too. As for the cunning of Slytherins, he didn't much think that described him.
“Don’t feel pressured or something," Lindsey added. “Even most wizardborns don’t have a clue of their house before sorting. Also, don’t be perceived——not all Slytherins are evil, not all Hufflepuffs are idiots, not all Ravenclaws are nerds, and not all Gryffindors are impulsive.”
Evidently, the Hogwarts houses were subject to stereotyping, just like everything else.
"So your house is sort of like your team at Hogwarts?" he questioned. That was the closest thing he could think of. He then shrugged. "I don't know. I might be in Gryffindor or Hufflepuff, by the sounds of it." As he did often, he ran a hand through his blond hair with a mischievous smirk. "So you said you're a Hufflepuff? I guess that's why you're nice enough to sit and talk to a random weirdo like me. But I'm definitely glad you did."

“I'm guessing bibbidi-bobbidi-boo isn't a real thing?”
Lindsey smirked. “Well, I’m afraid so.” she grabbed her beech wood wand once again. “But we could try if you like. bibbidi-bobbidi-boo.”
She knew clearly that nothing would happen. Nothing, really. This “spell” was definitely a fake one, since it had no etymology and wand movement.
“So your house is sort of like your team at Hogwarts?” The boy asked her.
“Yep. And you know about Quidditch? Every house has a Quidditch team. Hufflepuff came out the first in the inter-house games, and now we are competing against Drumstrang——another magic school. You could watch the match soon a few days later.”
Quidditch was definitely exciting. Or fascinating. Lindsey had been knowing it since a young age, but she guessed Marshal was grown up watching football games. She had watched a few times, and had decided that it was not bad, but not as interesting as Quidditch.
“So you said you're a Hufflepuff? I guess that's why you're nice enough to sit and talk to a random weirdo like me. But I'm definitely glad you did.“
What’s his intention? She thought. Random weirdo. He called himself that. This Marshal was definitely interesting——maybe even more interesting than Quidditch.
“Well,” She admitted. “the hat sorted me into Hufflepuff because I have said a kind word to him. It struggled where I should be sorted into.”
That sorting must be one of the weirdest sorting in the world. Lindsey remembered herself talking with the hat for a long time, discussing her house——she was, difficult to sort as the hat had said. But she felt great in Hufflepuff. Awesome, really. Hufflepuff was her home, and she wasn’t willing to change it——not the slightest.
“And hope you could be in Hufflepuff. It’s really a welcoming house. You would feel like home there. Gryffindor’s not bad though. A friend of mine is in that house, and she’s great!”
She was talking about Lizzie. That girl’s really interesting and fantastic. Lindsey wondered if she had came to the camp as well, cause she thought so but hadn’t seen her around yet.
“Actually any house is fine in Hogwarts. People don’t care much about it really. You could make friends all over the school! And we have seven fantastic subjects——these are all compulsory, and you would start taking elective classes from third grade.”
She looked at the boy. “Guess you have heard it before? Like, on the letter?

Lindsey whipped her wand back out, assuring him that she would give his spell a try, though she seemed pretty certain of the outcome already. She was just humoring him.
"Bibbidi-bobbidi-boo," she said, holding her wand out. Marshal watched closely, fairly sure that nothing was going to happen, but unable to quench his hope entirely. As suspected, the wand did nothing- apparently this was one spell that had truly been made up by the creators of fairy tales. He was a bit disappointed.

"Every house has a Quidditch team. Hufflepuff came out the first in the inter-house games, and now we are competing against Drumstrang——another magic school. You could watch the match soon a few days later.”
He definitely knew about the quidditch match - it was the thing that he had been looking forward to the most about summer camp - but everything else was new information. So there was some sort of competition between the different houses. He liked the sound of that; he had always had a competitive streak in him. It was why he enjoyed sports as much as he did.
And Durmstrang was another magic school? He hadn't known that Hogwarts wasn't the only one in the world, though now that Lindsey mentioned it, it made sense that there were more than one. After all, if there were wizards and witches all over the world, it would be rather difficult for them all to attend Hogwarts.
He grinned. "Yeah, I know all about quidditch. I can't wait to see the match; I wish so bad that I could play." He snapped his fingers, as though experiencing an epiphany. "I know! I'll just find a random broom lying around and go jump off a cliff." He put a hand up to cut off anything that Lindsey might have said in reply and added, "I know what you're thinking. It's not a good idea, and I would most likely die. But it would be worth it if I could actually fly. Besides," he popped the collar of his shirt and smirked in feigned arrogance, "You may not know this, but I'm actually a wizard. I'm sure I'd be just fine. Wanna watch me do it?" His smile broadened, as he genuinely enjoyed his own joke.

“Well, the hat sorted me into Hufflepuff because I have said a kind word to him. It struggled where I should be sorted into.”
It almost sounded like you could influence the hat's decision in some ways. Did it sort you by having a conversation with you? Marshal imagined himself sitting in a private room, having a heart-to-heart with a hat. Maybe it could even be bribed. But then, what exactly could you bribe a hat with? Perhaps one could offer an attractive friend for the hat so sit on.
He chuckled inwardly. What had his life turned into?
“And hope you could be in Hufflepuff," Lindsey said, and Marshal nodded. The more he sat and talked to this beautiful girl, the more he found himself hoping that he might get sorted into Hufflepuff, despite the odd name.

“Actually any house is fine in Hogwarts. People don’t care much about it really. You could make friends all over the school!" She continued, then began talking about the classes he would take at Hogwarts. “Guess you have heard it before? Like, on the letter?
Oh, drat, he thought with regret. I know it said something like that in the letter. I guess I should have read more about that stuff.
The issue was simply that he was an easily distracted person. And that he hated anything that even closely resembled homework. There were a lot of more interesting things that he could be doing, in his opinion.
"I definitely remember seeing something about that," he replied honestly, trying to avoid saying that he had ignored that part of the letter. "I hope the classes are more fun than the classes at my old school. They are, aren't they? I mean, magic and all that, right?"

“Yeah, I know all about quidditch. I can't wait to see the match; I wish so bad that I could play.”
Do all muggle born kids wish badly that they could play Quidditch? Doubted Lindsey. She remember Calvin. That Ravenclaw boy wished he could play as well. And he would like to be a professional player…maybe it’s just because this kind of wizarding sport was so tempting. Flying around and score…just cool.
She was almost shocked when Marshal suggested that he would jump down a cliff on a broom.
“No, no, do not do that. You’d certainly die. A random broom could not take you off to fly. Flying brooms are protected with special charms. Be cautious. We have flying class to help you fly as well.”
She tried hard to convince this poor boy. Oh dear, hope he would not die this summer trying to play Quidditch with a broom in his household.
“I hope the classes are more fun than the classes at my old school. They are, aren't they? I mean, magic and all that, right?”
“Well, it’s definitely interesting…but some subjects are rather hard. Like Transfiguration. Professor Lian’s classes are always tough.”
Her least favorite subject was Astronomy. Pretty nonsense, but the stars names were difficult to remember. Charms and Potions were always the best, and Herbology was tempting. God, she would try to work harder next year.
Somehow it’s getting dark slowly. And Lindsey found she was hungry. Ah…the BBQ! It’s starting, isn’t it? And they should get there as quick as possible, or other students and teachers would have eaten all the food up.
“By the way,” She turned to Marshal, “ Are you hungry? Let’s get to the BBQ. We could continue our talk there.”
Leaving the thread to the BBQ one, would post in BBQ after you replied ;D
P.S. may I slightly godmod Marshal in the first post of BBQ?
