Lovely Creature — Monster Hunter — Evasive Manoeuvres

It was a rather cold day and Aurelia hadn’t much to do that afternoon other than wandering aimlessly down the long stretches of corridors. The piles of homework sitting on desk in her dormitory were more or less complete. Aurelia did not want to go back to her dormitory yet again and face another episode of drama between her and her dormmate’s cat which triggered her never-ending sneezes. After all, she was allergic.

The masquerade ball was coming up in a few days but Aurelia had only heard the news about the event only a week ago and  immediately sent her Mother an owl so that the woman might pick her an outfit, any outfit. Her Mother new her best and Aurelia trusted her to find a decent outfit for her, praying that the outcome would prove to be disappointment.

Wandering down the hallways on the fourth floor, Aurelia decided to check on how the ballroom preparations were going.  Stepping through the threshold, Aurelia stared up in awe and the frivolous decorations around, the ballroom was spectacular. However, she soon heard soft rhythmic footsteps and realised that there was someone else in the room. In the middle of the room stood another student.

Step left, step right, repeat. Turn the toe, watch the heel, mind the dress. Place hand on her hip, like so. Repeat. Avoid her skin, avoid her radiance.

Letters written in a crimson scribble faced upward in an open booklet bound by leather. A pen sat atop of an unfinished page, the dark ink bleeding from its ball point tip. It's back lay flat to the crystal floors, but not in the way of shuffling feet and swaying hands. Heeled leather shoes tapped to the cold floors in a rhythm repeating the same quiet song. Hands moved through the air as if gracefully touching a ghost; a figure unseen.

A heel clicked incorrectly, and the figure moving from side to side halted. Paused, Warren raised a hand and lifted his fingers through the unruly waves of his hair. Clawed black nails scratched at the nape of his neck, a hand reaching up and adjusting the tie to a slightly looser grip on his throat. Taking a deep breath, he began to mumble to gently, as he slipped his eyes closed and immersed himself in the event to come, "Step left, step right, repeat. Turn the toe, watch the heel, mind the dress... Place a hand on her hip, and then repeat. Avoid her skin, avoid her radiance."

His stilled body began to move once more. Thin limbs swayed out in the air, his feet shuffling one foot after the other. Bundled sleeves crinkled at his elbows as he shuffled and moved to openly hold the air, but then fell short, his breath hitching as he stumbles forward.

Warren gains his barrings and pats his belt and dress pants free of invisible dust. Reaching upward, he pushes a strand of hair behind his ear, only to stop short, as he notices the slightest padding of feet heading his way. Without his glasses, whose folded neatly and placed atop of the thick black robe resting in a square pile beside his notebook, Warren could only assume that the figure approaching him was another student.

Tall, female, an unfamiliar scent. Human. A kind smile spreads itself thin on his pale lips. Turning to stand with his arms crossed and his head turned toward Aurelia, Warren studies her patiently.

"Evening, madam. Here for a bit of practice as well, are we? Should you need me to leave I'd be plenty fine with excusing myself, but time is sincerely cutting itself short seeing as there is a mere four days left before the ball," he began in a calm manner. The words fell off his tongue like a smooth butter; rich, yet holding a flavor to their note. Pressing a small hand to the top of his head, Warren eyed the young student with a curious, but thoughtful gaze.

"And so he was reading the story as if it were a spell and the words of it, spoken aloud, could make magic happen.”

No, the student wasn’t just standing, he was moving with his arms outstretched oddly. It took a moment for Aurelia to finally figure out what the boy was doing; he was practicing dance. The boy’s short stature lead the Gryffindor to assume that he was a first year. At the boy’s stumble, Aurelia could not help but stifle a small laugh that threatened to escape her lips. He definitely needed some assistance.

Somehow, the boy seemed to notice her even with his back turned away from her. Before she was even a few feet away, the boy spun to face her followed with a surprising courteous greeting. Now that he was turned to her, Aurelia noticed how pale his skin was. But what took her aback was the pair of eyes that were in a dark shade of crimson. Dhampir. The fact was not the very least incredulous for the aspiring monster hunter but then again, she had not expected to encounter yet another one of those half-breeds so soon in Hogwarts.

Nevertheless, this would mean another chance to discover more about his kind and Aurelia was going to make full use of it. A gentle smile spread across her face, “Not really, I know how to dance perfectly well. You, however, seem in need of some assistance. To stumble into your dance partner would not only be extremely embarrassing to you but your partner as well.

Aurelia then moved towards the boy so that she stood about an arm’s length away from him before stating, “That being said, your movements were a little... stiff and your hand was placed a tad bit to low. The last thing you would want would be to make your partner feel uncomfortable.

Never mind about that, there’s still four more days and mistakes can be corrected,” This time, she extended her arm. “Care for a dance?
