The Masquerade Ball

Millennium Biltmore Hotel [Link]
The event that many of the students were anxiously awaiting for - the masquerade ball. An opportunity for the students to don their best attire and enter this shared space hand in hand with someone special. The girls and some guys, although the later might hesitate to admit, had been planning their wardrobe for this event for weeks. Not only did they have the chance to impress someone special from Hogwarts but there was also fresh blood among the student body, namely the Ilvermorny students.
The Ballroom was grandly decorated with great vases of seasonal flowers - a myriad of fiery hues nestled within thick leaves of greenery. Small, intimate tables, seating no more than 5 lined the edges of the dancefloor. Many of the portraits throughout the castle were relocated to this ballroom so that they too could enjoy the festivities (feel free to interface and control the paintings but please be reasonable, they are here to add atmosphere. Try to interface with the other players!) Plain, cream colored table cloths adorned the tables that were spread out.
This time there was no candles on the tables.
This time there was no communal punch bowl.
This time nothing, absolutely nothing was going to go wrong.
Famous last words perhaps for the Headmaster Solomon Lear. He was strong armed into holding this fete, but he did so with trepidation and vowed that this time nothing, absolutely nothing was going to go wrong. The last dance, the Blossom Ball ended in varied disasters. From the Veritaserum- spiked punch to the brawl between a troublesome goth Gryffindor and an older student that resulted in a fire and several injuries, to the various students who wandered off during the dance to find all sorts of mischief. Events such as these were incredibly stressful for Professor Lear, it was hard to explain to concerned parents why their son or daughter now needed therapy twice a weeks to deal with the PTSD of it all.
There was a small band playing. Solomon would regret allowing a few fifth years to pick the band without first checking. He would not be understand a word that they were saying and the mostly male group wore more make-up than the girls in year seven did by a fair margin. They mostly into their microphones and the floor rumbled from the deep bass. The Headmaster figure standing on the dancefloor could feel his stomach wobble in distress.
| It could be assumed that the masked man in armor was obviously Solomon, the Headmaster. It was as if he made no effort to hide his true identity, after all his decision to wear armor even in casual settings was a defining part of who he was and who he appeared to be. Today his armor was different. While it was common to see him in the same honey-hued, leather-wrapped garments, this time this man wore a darker suit of armor. Black leather wrapped breastplate that protected his vitals. Gauntlets a mixture of both silver-colored metal and black leather wrappings. He was also obviously armed with a sheathed blade at his side which was unusual considering the fact that the only weapon a wizard -should- need would be their wand. He wore a mask that covered the upper portion of his face (you will have to imagine the beard). A stone-like mask of near the same silver hue as his armaments less it lacked the same luster. Five horn-like extensions came off the simple mask that otherwise had no discernible features. |
|
No silly pranks. No cupcakes that taste like fish. A very normal ball where absolutely nothing should go wrong.
Would it? No, of course not. There was a problem with wearing a mask, your identity is hidden behind an obvious disguise that nobody attempts to peel away. It is merely accepted for the sake of the masquerade that you are an unknown. Several people would enter with the first wave of students that certainly did not belong.
This is the dance thread. There is no post order. I will be posting in here on both my student account as well as my Professor Account. There will be side threads that likely branch off from this thread. Please have fun.
There is something about ambition, how it not only propels you but also defines you.

The Masquerade Ball
Yay. A ball. Yeah, this wasn't exactly Phyllis' idea of how to spend her night, but it couldn't be that bad. Probably. At least she'd get to meet some more Hogwarts students (hopefully ones that didn't lose their sanity just because of the partying).Role-playing as dNPC Phylicia Stanwood || @Thora Larkston as Karilyna Kawahara || Open to Interactions
By her side was her best friend and partner in crime, Karilyna Kawahara, or Miss Doe-Eyes, as Phyllis preferred to call her. Of course she'd come with a friend--she was a bloody first year, after all, so the thought of attending the ball with a boy hadn't even crossed her mind. Or, if it had, it had been quickly shut down with a mimed gag. They hadn't planned any pranks, but who knew, maybe they'd come up with something hilarious that wouldn't get them in trouble. At least not too much trouble. She did appreciate not having a figurative X painted on her back to let all the teachers know 'Warning: trouble-maker; keep an eye on at all time'. That would make it much harder to skirt around the rules.
The redhead had dressed up for the ball, although not in a costume. She hadn't found anything Halloween-worthy, but she figured a mask and dress would do, along with a random pair of leather boots she'd thrown into her trunk. Upon entrance into the ballroom she surveyed the decorations, something she was surprisingly able to do as she was one of the first ones there. What to do? Should she dance? Did she want to dance? The Thunderbird supposed she wouldn't mind that option if Karilyna wanted to. Otherwise, it would likely be entertaining enough just to watch people from the small tables. And they were bound to be here for a while, so a snack, particularly a sugary one, wouldn't be a bad idea. At least until they went on a sugar high and started acting like idiots.
"Any preferences for what we should do?" Phyllis asked her friend. It wasn't like she cared anyways, so the less decisions she had to make, the better.

The Masquerade Ball

The point of the bright indigo tresses was as always to be noticed. She wanted to be recognized. It was how she thrived in this wizard society where reputation was only as powerful as the recognition of her peers. She needed to stand out if she wanted to be known and moreover if she wanted to win. Her brash, unsettling nature was a part of her power over others. The anxiety that started with a creeping that would eventually swell into something until it not only got out of hand but also they made a mistake. The failed to hide themselves from her, for at the very least a fleeting moment and with those meager morsels she was able to take control.
She needed to only do one thing to ensure that she would not be identified, that was appear as herself. No, not the Erin that many of the students and Professors in Hogwarts had been familiar with. She simply washed her hair. Her purple tresses were obviously dyed, more vibrant some months than others as the hue faded with time and washings. Erin stripped the color out, leaving only her natural flaxen strands of hair. It took a few hours, one would have thought that Erin was preening for a crush. For some boy that she "really liked."
Well, she had a powerful interest in one young man -- Quinn Healy and it was less than wholesome. She had sent him an owl asking him to the dance, she never used her name of course. she was smart enough to know that her duplicity would be obvious if she was to share her true name. No, she left the sender nameless. She was pretty enough, even if it was an asset she rarely utilized.
| Erin would run her hands over the shimmery green material. Some might say that she was peacocking. In a sense she was. Picking bright colors to summon the attention of a target rather than a mate. Men, like women, liked shiny things. | ![]() |

That was why she was wearing heels. Well, that and she needed whatever height she could get to close the gap between herself and Quinn. Had she had any romantic intentions, she would be concerned about how they might kiss. She would have packed a step ladder for such an occasion. She considered getting one for this occasion as well but concluded that she would be more apt to strike him with the ladder if it was on hand. Surely there would be similarly weighed chairs that would require less effort on her part to transfer to the dance floor.
| That was why she chose the platform stiletto with a metal heel. Something that would give her an extra five inches of height. It was not nearly enough to even the vantage point between them but it served as also an innocuous weapon that would not be confiscated from her once the dance started. At least she hoped that would be the case. She stepped into the heels after she slipped into the dress. She wobbled as she acclimated to the heels and took a few test steps. | ![]() |
Her hair, pulled up and back away from her face. Held in place with shimmery pins. Not because it looked pretty, rather it kept her hair out of the way. It was harder to grab.

As for the mask, she did not need much, her appearance was drastically changed with make-up, blonde hair and her choice of garments. Still, it was a masquerade. She found a simple, plain lacy mask made of metal.
Shame all of this effort was not for a date but for a fight.
Hours before the actual event, Erin would practice walking on these stilts heels. Feet a bit sore, she was ready for war. She would leave the Slytherin dorms and exit the basement level, bidding the crones farewell as she saved the school from devastation. Up the shifting stairs to the ballroom. She was among the earliest to arrive. She would take a place near the door. She was looking for a giant. This is where Erin had the advantage. She blended with the crowd. She could look different. Quinn, on the other hand was limited. He was well over a foot taller than most adults, two feet taller than her (not that she knew he was quite that tall, he has grown since their last encounter) and a ginger. He was hard to miss.
Just a trick of the lighting they said...

The Masquerade Ball
Adlai beamed at the gorgeous decorations having only seen things this fantastic at family weddings.Open for interactions
Being one of the first ones there her mother’s words entered her mind once again, “First impressions are everything.”
Almost instantaneously she began to smooth out the invisible wrinkles in her dress, hide away any straying hairs into her marble white hijab, and adjust her winter owl mask.
She had planned her outfit the day before since her parents had sent her this dress as a belated birthday gift.
Adlai wondered if she’d see her friend Leah at the ball. She wondered if she’d make any new friends.
She wondered plenty of things...but one thing on her mind the most would be if she would fun. Then again what kind of question would that be? Why wouldn’t she have fun?
This was her first Halloween party, there was no way she’d let it go to waste by not having fun.
Thus, Adlai found a seat and waited for more people to arrive as she listened to calming music of the band that played.
Adlai hand always been jealous of those who could play instruments, it was an artful talent that she lacked due to her tendency to quit the instrument a few weeks later.

The Masquerade Ball
The dance was a lot more elegant than Miko had presumed, especially since the last one was a bit more casual, containing pizza and cupcakes. Noticeably, the second the boy entered the room he was disappointed as there was no punch bowl and there were no surprise cupcakes. A bit disappointing, definitely but maybe somehow it would be better.
He was nervous as what he was wearing was not usually what one might wear to a formal dance, as he was missing a jacket and anything that might have been really fancy. All he wore was a perfectly ironed white button up, a purple vest and a matching purple tie. For an easy match to the top part of his outfit he wore just plain black trousers and black dress shoes (which were surprisingly comfortable). Miko rather enjoyed the simplicity of his outfit, especially since he wanted to be different from the rest who would most likely be wearing stuff a bit flashy.

His breathe was taken away by the other people in the room, especially the ladies in there. One had their hair up with beautiful makeup and a lace-y metal mask. Another wore an interesting dress that was mostly either blue or black but Miko couldn't tell the difference due to distance. Everyone had worn stunning attire, then there was Miko.
Hair, still extremely messy but he clearly gave an effort to comb it as it was a bit less all-over-the-place. The mask which was perfectly fit to his face complimented the purple of his vest and tie, as it was the same shade of purple. His mask was probably Miko's favorite part of his outfit as it had music notes on it, and in his opinion made his bright green eyes stand out more than usual. The mask was a hand-me down from his grandfather on his mothers side whom was extremely involved in music and liked to say he taught the entire family how to be more involved with music.

Immediately, the Hufflepuff wandered over to the desert section of the buffet unsurprisingly, and grabbed a cookie. Okay maybe two or three but who was counting? Miko was still taking in the decoration of the ball, still a bit stunned, but eventually decided it was acceptable. And rather gorgeous. As he observed everyone he noticed a man, looking over everyone. Was that..? Yep. There was no mistaking who that was.
Headmaster Lear.
He usually wore some type of armor but this time he wore a different suit.
Nearly all black but with the leather straps and some silver on his gauntlets.
Was that a sword?!
That was...interesting.

The Masquerade Ball
Interacting with Nora Jensen
It couldn't be said that Elena enjoyed activities such as this ball overly much. It was not that the atmosphere of the ballroom wasn't pleasing, or that she minded the masses of people greatly, as there had been a time when she'd enjoyed such pastimes. That had however been a good thirty years ago, when the prospect of dressing up for hours, going to balls, meeting young men, and pulling them into darker corners for some more personal entertainment had still been, well... fun.
At forty-six, Elaine – despite having more than her life still in front of her – had become boring. She had lost a husband, raised a child, watched her sister-in-law turn a family feud into full-out war. She didn't need any more excitement and surely wouldn't go looking for it.
This ball was for the students, their own and those who had come from afar. Elena had come because it was her duty to be here, to make sure that all the students were accounted for, at least for the first few hours. Alcohol usually found its way into parties like this no matter how vigilant the teachers pretended to be and from what she'd been told Hogwarts balls never went as intended anyways. She harbored no illusions as to how the evening would end.
Nora, her new favorite family member from the Irish side of the family, would attend as well, or be forced to attend as well, which was the thing she was looking forward to the most. The woman didn't seem to mind Elaine's company overly much despite their contrary personalities and she had to admit that that had been a pleasant surprise. The other Head of Houses she got along fairly well with also, but Barnaby Ryker had the unfortunate effect of reminding her of Alexandru at times, which was something that still had Elaine confused. So maybe she avoided him a bit when she wasn't drawn to his company. It was irritating, really.
Then there was the absurdity of trying to maintain anonymity of course, which was a farce at best and so she hadn't bothered with it. Hogwarts only held so many professors and only one of them was a tall, black-haired witch with skin so pale she made her Irish ancestors proud.
Her dress was appropriately ridiculous. Blood red silk adorned with black lace, incredibly impractical long sleeves and a train that would not only double as a giant cleaning rag but also trip at least one unfortunate student over the course of the evening. With generations of Văduva women having collected uncountable number of dresses the family wardrobe was nearly unlimited and Gabriela had been delighted at picking a suitable ball gown for the occasion.
Elena had charmed her hair up to go with the look and put on a matching black and red mask, the only purpose of which was to look pretty and that really did nothing to hide her features.
She had opted to cut a striking figure. House pride was on the line, after all, and if there was one thing that everyone at Hogwarts took seriously it was flaunting the perceived superiority of the house a rather haggard hat had assigned them to at age eleven. Elaine had learned not to question that particular madness, especially since she was now the head of an army of easily excited and adorably competitive lion cubs. Red it was.
Cu ochii deschiși.

The Masquerade Ball
[quote]Dancing. Dresses. Pretty costumes and flowers and people everywhere. It was a sight to be seen. To say it was beautiful would be the understatement of the year. And even more breathtaking was the way, from this view, every person moved in harmony with everyone else. A sort of binding rhythm thrummed through the air.
Aideen sighed. The sky blue dress she was wearing felt too-long and awkward. The mask was weird. And the shoes? Just no. Taking a deep breath, she ventured a step forward and was instantly swept into the crowd. Lights danced across her face and her long brown hair flowed around her.
The noise was deafening in a comforting way, like the midnight thunderstorms back home. She would stare at the ceiling and listen to raindrops pounding on the roof. And if you knew the secret, if your ears had been trained to hear just right, you could hear a song.
The song of thunder and rain.
Mingling was not a natural habit of Aideen's and however at peace she felt, she felt equally as awkward. Her eyes desperately scanned the mass of people for a familiar face. Preferably, a girl, since dancing with a boy was very romantic and she was just not a romantic person. She liked the mud! And sword fights! What about Lamik? a tiny voice in her head asked.
Oh, shush.

Jake really DID like Halloween MOST of the time...even though it was scary. There were ghosts, and goblins, and ghouls...but there was also candy, and costumes, and trick-or-treating. The Morris household was never decorated TOO scarily - though of course there were pumpkins and jack-o-lanterns that Jake had always liked to decorate. He would always go trick-or-treating with his parents, and they would avoid the scary houses, and just stick to the ones that were nice. That was back in Wiltshire...Jake was pretty sure they didn't have trick-or-treating at Hogwarts. It was sad, but they did have a party at least...a "mask-e-rade"Open for Interactions!
There was only one problem. Jake had no idea what a "mask-e-rade" WAS.
He knew it was a party...which meant that there were going to be a lot of people. And a Hogwarts party meant...well...it might be kind of scary. There were a lot of things that were scary at Hogwarts, and this was a party made just for Halloween. If there were ghosts and spooks on a REGULAR day...what were there gonna be NOW? But EVERYBODY was going to go, and if Jake didn't show up he just KNEW that people would notice and think he was a baby. He had also heard there were going to be lots of sweets which would replace the candy he wasn't allowed to have due to not being home for trick-or-treating. He'd asked around Hufflepuff dorm if anybody knew what exactly a "mask-e-rade" was, and an older kid had finally told him - it was just like a costume party.
Well Jake knew what costume parties were, and so he had written home to his mum and dad - having learned finally how to send owls. He had waited and waited for a response. Then finally, one morning at breakfast, just when he thought it was going to be too late, he had got the package at last!
Jake made his way to the Great Hall and entered, clad in his brand new Pumpkin costume - sent from home. It was only when he entered the Great Hall that he realized something strange...wizards seemed to dress up for Halloween a lot differently from how muggles did. The little Hufflepuff looked down self-consciously at his costume which now seemed very out of place...where were all the colorful costumes? He'd been bracing himself for skeletons and monsters...but all there were were a bunch of masks. There were no other pumpkins...none at all. Jake blushed.
He didn't get it. George had told him he looked great...!
Shyly, Jake kept himself close to the wall and inched his way over towards the punch bowl, really really hoping not to be noticed.

LAMIK'S PERSPECTIVE
--------------------------------------------
Lamik Fillestar stepped into the ballroom, looking around in wonder at the beautiful and completely safe decorations. Even after being at Hogwarts for over a year, Lamik was still always amazed at the amazing looking events that Headmaster Lear and the various professors set up. Truly, there was no other place that Lamik had ever gone to that could compare, and the boy dearly hoped that unlike some other events in the past, this one would work out well.
During his first year at Hogwarts, Lamik hadn't known that some events would require formal wear, and so he hadn't packed anything too fancy. This year the boy was prepared though- wearing a dark purple suit that he had chosen himself.

His mask, on the other hand, was a bit less... serious. Lamik had taken quite a while to think of something to wear on his face that no body else would have thought of. Luckily, Lamik had thought of something eventually- a piece of paper.

Yes, the Gryffindor confidently strode into the ball room wearing a piece of paper with two holes cut out for eyes, and he was proud of it.
--------------------------------
NOVUS'S PERSPECTIVE
--------------------------------------------
Novus had left for the ball room about 30 minutes earlier then Lamik. The simple reason for this was that the boy knew that no matter what, he would get side tracked on the way. Ever since his arrival to Hogwarts, Novus had spent nearly every second of his free time exploring the castle. It was so different from Illvermony, and some part of him wished that he could stay. The reason for this was not only his preference of Hogwarts castle, but also his muggle parentage. Though it wasn't illegal for wizards to have children with muggles anymore, it was still exceedingly rare for something like that to happen in the United States. Unfortunately, with rarity came prejudice.
As he finally stepped into the Ball Room after spending his half hour staring at various statues on the way, the boy took a few moments to just look around at the british schools version of a ball. It was truly magnificent, and with his dark blue suit and simple black mask, Novus walked farther into the room, wondering if anything especially interesting would happen that night.

The Masquerade Ball
Halloween night! This was usually one of Jorah's favorite times of the year but thoughts of the ball were making him uneasy. He arrived outside the entrance of the ballroom precisely at the agreed upon time, 7:30pm, but Ruthie was nowhere to be found. Jorah felt like he looked stupid. He was much too over dressed for a simple school dance. His parents went all out on his custome, buying Jorah a slick new black dress robe with a house appropriate blue and black ornate silk tie and matching pocket square. His feet sported an uncomfortably stiff pair of shiny black dress shoes that hadn't been broken in yet. His look was topped off with an impressive black bird of prey mask complete with beak and feathers, a fitting ensemble for any dashing Ravenclaw. Maybe his parents were trying to make up for not being able to buy Jorah a broom for his first Quidditch match or maybe they were just so excited he had a date that they wanted their little man looking as handsome as can be. Jorah wasn't use to such fine attire and he felt like he was sticking out, he just wanted to blend in with the other students.Interacting with @Ruthie Greer
When Jorah told his parents over a fireplace call placed in the Ravenclaw common room that he was going to the ball with Ruthie, they were so excited! They teased him, wanting to know more about his new girlfriend. "She's not my girlfriend!", Jorah said defiantly, "She's just my friend, she wanted to go to the ball so I said fine, I'll go with her, that's it!" "Wait", said Jorah's father, "she asked you to the ball, not the other way around? Oh, she likes you, son. Better be careful though if she's got enough spunk to ask you first, she may be controlling. Don't let her control you, son, trust me I know all about that and its not pretty." "Excuse me, what's that supposed to mean!", Jorah's mother interrupted, "I don't control you, I just tell you how to do things right." "Sure, dear." Now Mom to Jorah, "don't listen to your father. She sounds like a lovely girl. I've liked her ever since you told me she saved my baby in Quidditch" "Mooom" "Ok ok, we'll let you go and send you something nice to wear." That was a understatement, Jorah reflected.
Jorah pulled down on his sleeves, to make sure they were even. What if she came early and she's already inside waiting for me, he thought. Jorah peered into the ballroom, the room wasn't filled yet but there was enough attendants that it would make finding his date difficult. How am I even gonna know its her, if we're all wearing masks? Jorah returned to where he was waiting before and had a terrible thought. What if she doesn't show up at all. I didn't even want to come to this thing and now I'm here alone. What do I tell my parents? They spent so much money, now I'll have to go. Come on Ru, where are you? He started to fiddle with his mask and that's when he saw her.
