Marshal strode slowly through the fantastical room, eyes carefully alighting across the various paintings that hung on the wall. The occupants of said paintings seemed to be mostly still in the dimness wrought by the twilight outside, what little red light was left streaking through the windows and casting long shadows upon the dance floor.
Aside from the fading sunlight, there was also another source of luminance. Flitting through the still air were numerous disembodied lights, appearing to Marshal like the flame of a large candle, without the wax or a wick. They danced around him as if mimicking the innumerable people they had seen do that very thing over the years, glowing with a subdued, dark blue color and likewise illuminating the area with such. He had been told that these lights reflected the mood of the people around them, and their current coloration certainly fit. Solemn and thoughtful, the young Gryffindor had come here to contemplate the upcoming dance, as well as a specific matter regarding the same.
Accompanied with any dance was always the complimenting issue of if you were even going to attend. If yes was the conclusion, then came the decision if you were going alone, or if you would request someone to join you. If indeed you chose companionship, there came possibly the most difficult decision yet: whom you would ask. The latter was the very question that Marshal was contemplating at present. In his short time at Hogwarts, he had met many girls he found attractive, a few of which had become some of his first friends at the school. He supposed he could see himself asking any one of them, though some had already been taken by people who were evidently a mite quicker than him. In light of that, he figured it was time he made a move. But who?
His thoughts drifted to Melissa Carson, her light green eyes contrasted by her long, ginger hair. He remembered seeing her in the quidditch store at Diagon Alley, the hot anger that had filled his chest at the way she was being treated, the two heartless bullies having ganged up on her. The protective lion within him had roared that day, unwilling to let the scene continue. He had certainly felt something for the Ravenclaw, something that he thought should be explored. So why not her? She was undoubtedly someone that he would like to to ask.
The more he considered the option, the more he knew it was the correct one.
His decision had been made. Now came the fourth and - hopefully - final issue that tended to bring itself up at the time of a dance; he had to ask her, but not only that, the boy had to ponder until he had the perfect plan to charm Melissa, assuring her acceptance. He had to plan well, then execute said plan flawlessly. Otherwise, she may refuse, leaving him with a boatload of disappointment and a need to find someone else, for which it may be too late.
Ah, who was he kidding? He never planned for anything. He would simply approach her and trust in his obviously large amounts of charm to get a favorable response. It would all work out.
Following the path of his mood, the floating lights now changed fittingly to a deep red, in representation of the burning determination now within him. He placed a hand against the wall, leaned his weight against it and shook his head.
“You guys are like the best mood ring ever.”
In reality, he had never been to a dance before. Nothing of the sort had ever taken place at previous schools he had attended. Now that he considered it, the uncomfortable realization hit that he had never been taught how to dance, nor bothered to learn himself. How could he woo Melissa if his two left feet introduced his face to the dance floor? That would be a less than desirable impression.
The ever diligent lights caught wind of the slightly anxious thought, drifting from red to a vibrant purple.
“Oh, come on, guys,” he complained.

Dancing Dilemmas
Honestly, the day just went by in a flash that Melissa didn't have time to think. Earlier that day, everyone received an unexpected announcement. One about the Autumn Ball which everyone was talking about now. It was happening later that day, which meant there was probably less than 12 hours or so to get ready and also get a date to the dance. For some reason, Mel wasn't very interested in it, although she's usually really excited about events. She would rather curl up on her bed with her cat, Kato, and read. The Ball just didn't seem really...well, exciting or anything. It wasn't like the ginger was going to ever find a date.
Even though she was most likely not going to go to the dance, she might as well just check out the ballroom, where it was probably going to be. For some reason, she never saw the giant room in the castle. As Melissa was climbing up the stairs to the fourth floor, she wondered, What if I miss something very important that happens at the Ball?, making her think about if she was going or not even more. Her thoughts quickly disappeared the moment she opened the doors to the ballroom though. The ginger looked around, amazed by the giant room. She had never seen anything like it in her entire life. The floating purple lights really added a nice touch to the whole room. Then something, well actually, someone caught her eye. "O-oh hi Marshal~"@Marshal Mozor

Dancing Dilemmas
♤♧ Say not that we age, but that our beauty develops with time ♧♤@Melissa CarsonMarshal had made his decision. It was no longer a question of if he would be attending the ball, nor whom he would ask to join him. Now it was only a matter of executing his planned course of action. And what better time to do it than right now, as soon as possible, immediately, and without hesitation? None, he concluded; there was no better time, so he needed to pull his mind out of… well, itself, and act.
Intending to do just that, he pulled away from the wall and started for the door, only to be stopped by a familiar figure standing in his path. The purple light cast shadows across her surprised expression.
”Melissa!” he exclaimed in shock, glancing around as if to remind himself of where he was. An exasperated grin crossed his face. ”Fancy meeting you here.”
And what a coincidence it was. What were the odds that the very person he had been thinking about would suddenly materialize out of thin air? It was almost like he had summoned her with his thoughts.
He glanced at his hands suspiciously. Just how powerful was his magic? Not at all, by appearance, considering his notable struggles to cast the simplest of charms. But perhaps more magical ability was hidden inside, unbeknownst to him entirely. Or else the situation could simply be what his father would refer to as, ‘a very happy coinkydink.'
Whatever the case, here she was, and he had to make the most of it. If anything, this was proof that it was their destiny to attend the ball together.
More encouraged than before, he continued, ”In fact, I was just thinking about you. All good things, of course, because-” he spread his hands apart, ”I’m not sure there’s anything else. But I have a question that I’d love to ask you.” He moved closer, staring into those big, brown eyes and thinking just how lucky he would be to gain her company on such a night. Truly, he knew that he was unworthy of that gift, but hoped she might be willing to show the kind of charity that he so obviously needed. One thing he did know was that she would never be treated better by anyone than the way he would treat her tonight.
He stopped a couple feet before her. ”I’m sorry that I’m giving you such short notice, but I was hoping that you would do me the honor of being my date for the dance tonight? I have no doubt you’ve already been asked, and if you have other plans, or don’t want to go, then I understand completely. I’ll only have myself to blame for asking late.”
A gentle smile resided in his hazel eyes to mirror the other features, a few uncooperative hairs hanging over one of them, as he been left without time to make himself presentable. The purple light within the ballroom mixed with the torchlight from without, creating a unique hue that could easily be considered rather.. romantic.
His heart thumped in his chest, reminding him of just how much the moment meant to him. Of course he wouldn’t show his disappointment, were Melissa to decline his invitation, but he knew that it would sting. Maybe he could use that as a reason not to be so absurdly tardy the next time an event like this rolled around. His mother would have been ashamed.
