September 26th, early afternoon

Ami couldn't help but feel, well... a little foolish as she hauled her fairly heavy makeup cube with her to the bathroom, with a fedora perched jauntily on her head. She would've liked to do this within the comfort of her own dorm, but there was a group of 6th years sitting on her bed, gossiping while braiding one another's hair, like some sort of cult thing. Sometimes, she just wished that the dorms could've been separated by year, but alas, they were not. So, wanting to find a quieter place to experiment, Ami headed towards one of the public bathrooms.
Pushing open the door to a bathroom that seemed relatively empty, with her cat Leo following closely behind her, Ami sighed in relief as she checked to make sure the sinks were dry, before gently setting the lunchbox-shaped bag in the bowl of one of the sinks. "Alright, then," she murmured, while Leo took a seat underneath the sink. "Let's get started, shall we?"
Over the past few years, Ami had developed a love for the art of drag, and she'd gotten quite skilled at it. In fact, she even had her own drag persona, which was quite rare for 14-year-olds who didn't really have their lives figured out yet. But the problem was, although she thought herself already to be quite good at all things makeup, whether it was feminine or masculine, she didn't get much practice with it. On most days, she was far too tired and groggy to even attempt concealer before going to class. In fact, it was kind of a miracle that she showed up to class in her uniform at all. And during their days off, Ami was far too preoccupied with attempted to finish off a week's worth of homework in an afternoon. Sometimes she would wear eyeliner and some eyeshadow during their Hogsmeade weekends, but she found herself hunched over parchment and textbooks more and more as the students settled back into the normalcy of classes. But the ball was coming up soon, and Scott had picked out a pretty amazing outfit for her (apparently, she wasn't allowed to show up in drag this year). Today, she planned on brushing up on her brush techniques before the 16th.
Taking out her crumpled scrap of parchment and glancing at the two items written on it, she grinned happily at her agenda. "Alright, Leo..." she murmured under her breath, "Let's get this show on the road." Gingerly climbing onto the sink next to the one holding her makeup, she somehow managed to tuck her legs into the bowl of the sink, clearly misusing it as a chair. Technically, she was here to test out different makeup looks she could potentially do for the night of the ball, but it had been far too long since she'd transformed into Chad. In fact, the last time she'd done it had been in June, for Cy's Pride takeover, and it would be a good warm-up before she tried to get into the more complicated stuff.
Unzipping her makeup cube, Ami grabbed her concealer as she leaned forward, examining her skin in the mirror. Since she was just going to wipe it all off in about twenty minutes, she figured that she didn't need to bother with primer, quickly dotting the concealer over the few pimples between her brows, by her temples, and on her chin. She was thankful that she had relatively good skin and didn't really need foundation, as she liked her freckles and didn't want to cover them up. As she blended out the concealer spots with her blender, she reached into her cube and rummaged around until she found her contour sticks.
Although she already had pretty amazing bone structure, it was just a little too feminine to pull off the true "Chad" vibe. Taking the first contour stick, the darker one, Ami lined her temples and the hollows of her sucked in cheeks, before outlining her jawline as well. Two thin lines down her nose to make it seem stronger and taller, and then she'd move on to the lighter contour stick. She'd probably have to add more shadows by her already well-defined jaw to make it appear more squarish, but she'd blend everything out first and assess before accidentally going overboard. Remembering the latest technique she'd discovered regarding her faux mustache, she grabbed a thin, angled brush, setting the lighter contour stick aside for a moment. Ami loaded some of the darker pigment onto the brush before roughly drawing the beginnings of a mustache on her upper lip- she would blend this out to create the base for Chad's iconic mustache, adding more dimension and depth.
She was just starting to add the lighter contour stick on her cheekbones when Ami heard the door open. Panicking, she dropped the stick in the sink, turning towards the intruder wide-eyed. Her fight or flight kicking into overdrive, she blurted out the first thing that came to mind.
"It's not what it looks like, I swear!"

Opeila had lost her hairbrush. She was unsure how it happened, probably fell out of her bag at some point. It was only this morning, ten minutes before she wanted to go to breakfast that she realized that it was gone. The Slytherin had to comb her hair with her fingers instead and it kind of went well. Luckily her long brown hair was naturally quite straight, with only some light waves, so she didn't look too messy when she entered the great hall.
After breakfast she did some homework, but in the afternoon, when her hair started to tangle again, she found it was necessary that she found it. The second year had decided to start in the girls' lavatory. It would make sense if it was there, after all she took it here with her other things every day.
If it wasn't there, she wpuld slowly make her way back to the common room, look in every corner. Where could it be? Was it possible, that maybe the caretaker found and took it? Opeila wasn't even sure, if there was a corner for lost items or something. It would be great.
With a sigh she pushed the bathroom door open and immediately heard something clatter. There was a ginger-haired girl, a fourth or fifth year probably, sitting... in the sink? Opeila's gaze wandered to the bag on the sink next to her. A teenager practicing using makeup it seemed.
Honestly, it fascinated Opeila quite a bit. Make up was no part of the twelve year old's life so far, but it was extremely interesting to watch others use it. Opeila had attended the make-up errand, but she had focused more on nails and hairstyles than makeup. Opeila's super strict grandmother would have never approved if she used makeup, in the old woman's view, that was an adult's tool.
"It's not what it looks like, I swear!"
Opeila blinked surprised. This would have been no big deal if the girl didn't start to panic. "It... It doesn't?", she asked unsure, "So you are not doing makeup?" Using makeup? Applying makeup? Opeila wasn't even sure what words to use.
The first time she looked at the girl more closely and now noticed the shadow on her upper lip, almost like... "Are you drawing yourself a beard?" Her eyes widened with surprise. Why though? Another thought made her face turn hot. Was that a rude question to ask? Opeila didn't know the girl, she didn't mean to be rude. "I'm sorry... I'm actually not quite sure what uh... this looks like, so I won't judge, don't worry. But... What are you doing?"

There was something to be said for observation. You know, stopping to assess a situation before leaping into action; scoping out the scene before jumping out, guns ablaze.
But for Ami, observation did not come naturally to her. It was much easier to just spring into action- punch first, apologize later, right? But as she scrambled to regain her composure in front of this unexpected guest, there were a few key details that she managed to glean while her heart rate returned to normal.
1. The girl in front of her was calm. Perhaps a bit confused, but still rather composed and serene, nonetheless. In fact, she might have gone as far as to say that she was stoic, which was a new word she learned just a few weeks ago. As Ami's hands attempted to reclaim her contour stick rolling about in the sink, she noticed that the intruder didn't seem all that startled. Which was good.
2. She was most likely younger than her. Ami was rather tall for her age, but still, the girl in front of her was shorter than her fellow 4th years, and still had that glow of having not yet been set on fire. Plus, she had caught Opeila eyeing her makeup bag, and not many people wore that much makeup on a daily basis to class at... whatever age the Slytherin was.
3. She was asking her a question. Actually, several questions. Oh, crap.
Finally grabbing the rolling contour stick in her hand, she smacked it against her palm as she desperately tried to refocus her mind on what Opeila was saying.
"Makeup! Yes, uh... makeup. Yup. Makeup." Dropping the contour stick into her makeup bag, she swung her legs up and out of the sink as she stood up, shaking her wild mane out as she dusted her hands off on her ratty jeans. "I don't think we've met before, eh? Ami, Ami Procoppio. Fourth year Hufflepuff." Sticking her hand out expectantly, Ami smiled at the brunette. "And, er... don't mind the- it's a work on process," she said with a shrug, tapping all the lines on her face with her left hand.
Returning to the mirror, she grabbed an egg-shaped sponge (a, ahem, beauty blender) and began to blend out the existing lines on her face. "It's called drag..." she said, glancing back towards Opeila in the mirror. "Cross-dressing, whatever you want to call it, I guess. It's bonkers-levels of fun, you know? Sometimes being a girl is just so boring. I don't really feel the vibe sometimes, you know? So yeah. It's a beard... or, well, it's going to be."

Opeila eyed that pen- No it wasn't a pen, right? It was a... a... make up... well, fine, Opeila couldn't find a better word for it. As long as she didn't make a complete fool out of herself by saying it out loud, she would call it a pen in her mind. Anyway, the older girl was smacking her palm with it, seemingly... nervous? The way she confirmed Opeila's question seemed definitely nervous. But why? Was it something bad she did there? The Slytherin had been told often that she didn't behave like a normal child, but in a situation like this, Opeila was once more made painfully aware, that she had no idea of the normal way of growing up. Phases one went through.
Opeila's phases so far had often been based on death, loss and loneliness. Certainly not normal for a child of twelve. The older girl introduced herself as Ami Proc- Preoccupi- Pocroppio. Or so. A name that Opeila as well would avoid to say out loud in the future. Opeila shook the hand she extended to her. "Opeila Winters, nice to meet you. Second Year, Slytherin."
Ami turned to the mirror again to erase the lines on her face and explained to Opeila that it was called drag.
Opeila was fairly certain that she had never heard that word in a different context than 'to drag something or someone' but this was definitely not what Ami meant, right? The fourth year went on and gave it a name that Opeila could imagine something under. Cross-dressing. She also said that she sometimes found being a girl boring. The Slytherin didn't understand. "Boring, why?" Another worry that she never thought about in her life. To her, being a girl was just the way she was born, was it so different to be a boy? They lived the same life here in Hogwarts, didn't they? Same chances and everything?

Mm, yes. A Slytherin. That would explain the slightly confused and blank look on Opeila's face; it was wrong of her to assume, but Ami could only guess that Opeila was a child of magical parents who had never been exposed to drag before, simply based off her expression. To be fair, there probably weren't many drag queens and kings in the wizarding world for young children to get exposed to, so the rather confused expression on the second year's face made sense.
Ami continued with her makeup in the mirror as Opeila seemed to process her words, but her hand froze as the Slytherin posed a really good question. Why was being a girl boring? Pressing her lips together as she tried to come up with a suitable answer, Ami exchanged her beauty blender for her powder compact, beginning to set her contour into place with the white powder. "I... well. That's a good question, actually," she admitted with a shrug. "I really couldn't tell you why. I guess there are just some days when I don't want to look like myself, or at least the girl version of me. Sometimes I just really want to have a mustache, or a beard. Or I want to be referred to as a boy. I mean, I'm happy with who I am, as a girl; I'm definitely not trans. But I don't like being a girl all the time. I like having the choice to be fluid with my gender expression."
Realizing that she probably was speaking above Opeila's head at this point, Ami glanced back at Opeila in the mirror. "It's... well. For lack of better words, it's like being a tomboy." Gesturing towards Opeila's clothing with a vague wave of her hand, she added, "Sometimes, you might want to wear dresses and skirts. Others, maybe a t-shirt and jersey shorts are more to your liking. Drag is like going in the extremes of either direction."

Opeila could see that the fourth year was struggling to answer her question why she found it boring to be a girl. It was a reasonable question though, wasn't it? She hadn't missed anything obvious, had she?
No, apparently it was really something Ami didn't know how to answer, but she tried to explain it to the little second year, who was beginning to feel pretty naive, anyway.
She could understand it a little. Wanting to have a mustache at times... that was a curiosity thing, right? Just like wanting to have braces at times just to know how it felt? Opeila didn't want braces or glasses or anything like that for a long time, she just wanted to know how it was. Or she used to when she was small, because all the older kids seemed to have them and it seemed like a symbol of being grown up, or more grown up than she was.
Wanting change was also something Opeila could relate to, although she wasn't quite sure if that was what the girl had meant, but she nodded. "I think I understand... a little... That's like... I've seen girls shave their hair off completely, is that like..." She closed her mouth again, suddenly unsure what she wanted to say at all and decided to leave it at all.
Instead she walked over to Ami and looked at her make up bag. "Can you do that with my face too?", she asked on an impulse, looking up at the redhaired girl.
