A Painting Session
For once, Kalani wasn't wearing her bracelets. Now, this was unheard of. Kalani needed her bracelets. Otherwise, she wouldn't be able to explain herself. But, there was something very wrong with the bracelets.
Aesthetic.
See, the bracelets were all different colours. Pink, green, orange, yellow. None of them matched that well. They were all fine back home, but now she had colours that she needed to rep. Red and gold! So, she'd gotten the bright idea to paint them. But for that, she needed paint; so she turned to her parents.
That day, she came down from the Owlery with a cardboard box tucked under her arm. There were six paints inside, and a little tray for holding them, but Kalani only cared about two of them: the red and the gold. She also had a black Sharpie, for writing over the new paint.
Now, she'd thought long and hard about where would be best to paint. In Gryffindor Tower? No, she'd get paint everywhere, and then she'd have to clean it all up. If she got paint on the nice carpet, that'd be hell to get out. She needed an area that she could clean easily, somewhere tiled. Like a bathroom!
She supposed it would be fine to do it in the regular bathroom. Beside, she didn't really want to go near those creepy abandoned ones somewhere on the second floor. Tons of stuff happened in those bathrooms, lots of things worse than painting.
She arrived in the bathrooms. They were empty for the moment, but she knew that people would come in and out as she started painting. She unboxed the paints - $2.98 - and set them beside a sink. They came with two little paintbrushes too. She slipped off her Gryffindor robes, revealing her uniform underneath. She hung the robe up on a little peg, where people usually put their bags while they went to the bathroom, and pulled the first bracelet out of the pocket. 'I'M DEAF', it told her. She needed to get this one done first, since it was really one of the most important ones.
She poured out the red and gold paints into the tray, and just as she was ready to start painting, she saw the door to the bathroom open from the corner of her eye.

A Painting Session
Evianna wandered into the girl's bathroom. Since classes had already let out, she figured that everyone would be either eating dinner or heading back to their common rooms. However, Evianna wanted to clean out her bag and take a trip to the library before her evening meal. Of course, she could always skip dinner entirely in order to lengthen her library time; she had a pack of crisps, a granola bar, and an apple stashed away in her bag from lunch hour. It wasn't a substantial dinner by any means, but it would be enough to last her until morning, especially if she could stay in the library until curfew.
Walking in, she set her knapsack down next to the garbage bin and opened the top flap. Evianna shoveled out an assortment of books, quills, and parchment before clearing out the small pile of candy wrappers and pieces of torn parchment out of the bottom of the bag. Then, she reorganized her things and turned around, preparing to leave the room.
A slight noise behind her made her turn around. Until then, she had thought she was alone and hadn't bothered to go any further than the trash can beside the door. Now, Evianna could see that she was mistaken. A small, dark-haired girl sat in front of one of the sinks, bent over. Next to her was what looked like a pile of beads.
"Hello," Evianna said. When the girl didn't seem to notice her, Evianna spoke louder. "Are you all right?"
Either this girl was ignoring her or she couldn't hear her. Hoping that the second scenario was true, Evianna walked behind her and tapped her on the shoulder.

Kalani watched a first year girl walk into the bathroom. She had longer, ginger hair, and was around the same height as her. Kalani had honestly just been worried about it being a teacher. Satisfied that she was safe from detention (as long as the girl wasn't a tattletale) she quickly ran one of the two brushes under the tap and then dipped it into the red paint.
Holding the bracelet above the sink, she went to work painting over the 'I' on the bracelet. The paint was thick and difficult to get into the cracks, but she was pretty sure she was doing alright. The red paint was coming off of the brush and catching on the other beads, but that was alright since she'd be painting over them, as well. She was getting paint on her fingers, and it was dripping into the sink, but that was why she did it in the bathroom in the first place.
Looking down at her white school shirt, she wondered if she should have gotten an apron. She was sure she'd be fine.
As she was going to move onto the next bead - the one that showed the space between the words, she felt a tap on her shoulder.
She'd grown out of getting spooked when people touched her a while ago. When you're talking to someone and they don't reply, it's natural to give them a poke or a shove to get their attention. She glanced over her shoulder. She wasn't surprised that it was the red haired girl; as far as Kalani knew, no one else was in the bathroom. Kalani smiled, holding up the paintbrush with one hand to show what she was doing, and holding up her bracelet with the other hand, the beads currently reading 'M DEAF'.

The girl turned around almost as soon as Evianna's hand made contact with her shoulder. She had large, dark eyes and dark hair; sewn into her black school robe was the Gryffindor crest. She smiled at Evianna, holding up a bracelet with lettering that said "M DEAF." The first bead was painted over with red
Evianna gaped at the writing on the bracelet. Deaf.
How could one spend eleven years without hearing a single thing?
To not have experienced hearing a mother's voice, or heard music, or listened to someone else laughing. Evianna couldn't even begin to imagine life without hearing. It seemed tragic.
And the one question Evianna could think of was, Did it hurt?
She sat down next to the girl, reopening her backpack and pulling out a sheet of parchment and a pencil. My name's Evianna Wilson, she wrote as neatly as she could. Which was very neat, considering that she was currently kneeling on some rather dirty bathroom tiles and writing with her paper against the wall. "What's yours?" Noting the paints and the bracelets, she added, "Do you want me to help you paint?"
Evianna hoped that she'd responded the right way. After all, maybe the girl was deaf only to lower frequencies and could hear if Evianna spoke to her. Or maybe she could read lips. In that case, Evianna could have talked, but the deaf girl probably wouldn't be able to see every word. Hopefully, in this situation, writing was the best move.

Kalani had never seen someone so openly shocked at her condition. Most people tried to hide it, quickly closing their fly-trap mouths and giving smiles that were too tight on their teeth and nods that were too stiff on their necks. Though she got it, she couldn't help but think it was a bit stupid. Besides, it was a lot funnier when people let their mouths hang open. And she appreciated the genuity of those people. The blunt, the brash. Her kinds of people.
She watched as the girl started digging something out of her bag. She pulled out out a slip of parchment and started to write. She was going to some lengths as well; kneeling on the floor, leaning up against the wall. It didn't look very comfortable, but Kalani joined her, lowering herself into a half-squat, half-crouch position that would burn her thighs in time. This way, she read over her shoulder.
As soon as she saw the question of her name, she stood up. She shuffled through the pile of bracelets, until she found the one printed with 'KALANI ANDERSON'. She joined the girl - Evianna - back on the floor, holding out the bracelet on an open palm. By this time, Evianna had finished writing the note. While handing her the plastic jewellery, she reached out and took the note.
She'd barely shoved the note back into Evianna's hands when she reached over and grabbed the spare paintbrush. She held it out to Evianna, waving it a little as encouragement. She gestured enthusiastically to the red and gold paints on the tray, then to the bracelets. She didn't care if the Ravenclaw followed a pattern or not. All that mattered was that she used the right colours. She hesitated for a second, then left the piece of parchment between them. She picked up the pencil and scrawled: "Use red and gold. Like Gryffindor!" She added a smiley face after. "Also I can read lips. So you can speak to me. Where are you from?" Her mom had encouraged her to 'small-talk', but it was difficult when you couldn't even do the 'talk' part.
When she was done writing, she picked up the 'M DEAF' bracelet from where she'd sat it, and started painting again. She didn't care much when the red paint missed the beads and streaked along her fingers, just embracing it and doing her best to try and avoid getting it on her uniform. Of course, she still did.
