𝓢piraling. Amadea was already spiraling and she had been back at school for a matter of minutes. It was the first day back at Hogwarts and she was already freaking out. Why was this happening? She had made a promise with herself. This year was going to be her year. This year was going to be great. She had already worked through the trauma and grief of the horrible year that was her third year...this was supposed to be the part where she rebounded, the part where she bounced back. Unfortunately, it seemed like she had fallen right back into where she had been before.

The summer had been a nice distraction; she had attended summer camp and gone home and spent time with her family. She had really discovered a lot about herself, some things that were new and unfamiliar. Amadea had already been grappling with the issue of identity for a long time; ever since her father's death she felt like she was turning into this new person that she didn't recognize and didn't like. She wanted to go back to being the old Amadea. Over the summer, she was slowly starting to accept this new person and realize that whatever it was that was changing about her was probably for the better and that she should embrace this new Amadea instead of trying to fend her away.

That was why Amadea found herself standing in the girl's bathroom with a bottle of hair dye in her hand. This was definitely not a good idea at all. Her red hair was a defining characteristic of herself...or rather, she reminded herself, her old self. This wasn't Amadea anymore. If she was going to truly embrace whoever the person she was becoming was, she needed to go all the way. If Amadea had been thinking more rationally, maybe she would have realized that this wasn't the only way to start embracing her new self. She didn't need to change her physical identity to match with the new characteristics and identity that she was forming. But her mind was settled on this fact, so Amadea was here, doing the only thing that she rationally could think to do.

It didn't seem like there was anyone else in the bathroom with her, which was a blessing and a curse at the same time. Amadea had absolutely no idea what she was doing with this dye but she also didn't want any of her friends to come in here and talk her out of it. All she knew was that she had to do this. Amadea fumbled around as she read the instructions, wondering how she was supposed to successfully get all of her hair dyed when she could barely even see all of it. Maybe she should've gotten someone else to do this for her. Maybe she should wait until she was calmer and not in the middle of having an identity crisis to make this drastic change about herself. After all, her red hair was what made her part of the Campbell family. Out of all of her family members, she was the only one who resembled their father in any way with her red hair. If she did this, it was like she was letting go of him even more and Amadea didn't like that thought. At the same time, the need to change it and to not have a constant reminder of what she lost sitting on her head was just as strong as the want to keep her father in her life as much as she could.

With a dejected sigh, Amadea sat down on the floor of the lavatory and put her head in her hands. She had no idea what she was doing; she had no idea who she was. This was exactly what she was trying to avoid, these two conflicting halves of her that made it impossible for her to make any decision. Before Amadea could gather the nerve to open the dye and attempt to color her hair or throw it in the trash and pretend nothing had ever happened, she heard footsteps and quickly scrambled to her feet to see who was standing there.

Lizzie had no idea why her brothers had to be so mean. Obviously, they didn't mean for her to have her hair chopped off but that was all they could laugh and talk about for days. She had loved her long golden hair but as she walked around the castle of Hogwarts looking like a boy, the girl realised she could use that to her advantage. Try and confuse some poor little first years into thinking she was of the opposite gender. It would defiantly be very funny to watch them squirm in embarrassment as they realise the mistake they had made.

Admittedly, Lizzie actually liked her new hairstyle . She suited her very well and it didn't make her look like the 11 year old she had started as the year before. However, it had caused some confusion in the house. The girl had one day woken up thinking she had switched gender and that started the whole conversation from her parents about whether she thought she was transgender or not. They soon came to the conclusion that Lizzie was just annoyed at her brothers and had caught a bit of PTSD of having short hair. Even if that was not the case, Lizzie went along with it just huffing a puffing as the days went by.

The girl cared about her appearance a lot and liked to go the bathrooms at any point she could get just to make sure she looked good. If even an eyelash was out of place she could go mental. She may have been thought of as crazy by other people but it was just a habit she had caught from her mother since she was young. Lizzie wanted to get out of the habit and had been forcing herself to stop going to the bathroom as often but sometimes she just couldn't help it. She knew she always looked decent however the thought of someone she cared about seeing her look even a little bit groggy made her feel sick.

She was walking towards the Girl's Bathroom so quickly it looked as though she hadn't even been there. Lizzie pushed the doors open with all her might and jumped in the room not having a care in the world on who was in there that she could have scared.

"Amadea." She breathed out with a smile on her face. Lizzie had met the girl in front of her only two times but defiantly remembered such a pretty face, "How lovely to see you again. What are you doing here?" The question was genuine and was not just another one of those 'conversation starters' that actually never got anywhere.

Lizzie walked slightly closer to the older girl noticing the box of hair dye in her hand. "You are trying to dye your hair?" She asked, "That's something you shouldn't really do one your own. Who knows what could happen." She laughed and went over to the sink to look in the mirror slightly.

"Your hair could go red, or blue for all we know." She chuckled again and faced Amadea, "You sure you want to go through with it? My mother loves to dye her hair and then sometimes regrets it after." Lizzie scrunched her eyebrows up and continued, "Actually, scratch that. Do what you want."

Letting out a quick sigh, Lizzie grabbed the box out of her hand and opened it, "It's now or never, Amadea. If you don't do it now you will never have to guts to do it again." She did not want to push it onto her but it was either change who she was or always be the plain old Amadea she probably no longer wanted to be anymore.

𝓐madea scrambled to her feet, hoping that she didn’t look too disgruntled; she might be having an identity crisis but she sure wasn’t going to let anyone else know about it. This was something she had to handle on her own. It's not like anyone else could tell her who she was, right?

Thankfully…or maybe not thankfully, the person who had entered the bathroom was someone Amadea already knew. On the one hand, she was glad that it was someone she had met before because she knew that she probably didn’t look completely normal at the moment, clutching the hair dye in one hand and her crazed eyes staring into the mirror. On the other hand, she also was hoping the person was a complete stranger so then they could continue on with their business and not disrupt Amadea from trying to make this decision. Amadea almost didn’t recognize the girl as Lizzie Verdine, the Ravenclaw who had guarded the base with her during the Capture the Flag game back In the summer. It had been only a month or so since they last had seen each other but Lizzie’s appearance had changed. Ironically, it was because of her hair that was now cut quite short compared to the long locks she had been sporting during the summer. Amadea felt like this was some sort of sign from the universe; this was the right thing to do. She had to dye her hair.

“Oh, uh, hi Lizzie,” she said, shifting from foot to foot. “It’s good to see you as well. Nice hair.” Then Lizzie asked the dreaded question that Amadea did not want to answer, though it would seem fairly obvious considering she was holding a giant tube of hair dye. Before Amadea could try to come up with some crafty response about what she was doing in the bathroom holding hair dye in her hand so Lizzie could leave and she could go back to trying to psych herself up to put the dye in her hair, Lizzie had spotted the bottle.

As Lizzie went on about how her mother sometimes regretted dyeing her hair, Amadea was now feeling even more conflicted than she had been earlier. What if her hair turned bright green instead of going blonde like the box promised? What if it worked perfectly but she just hated having blonde hair? Sure, blonde seemed like a good color but Amadea had never had any hair color besides bright red. But the universe had given her a sign, she reminded herself. If she wanted to remake herself and embrace her growth and change, this was the only way to do it. Thankfully, it seemed like Lizzie was sensing Amadea’s hesitation and spoke the words that encouraged Amadea; she wasn’t about to chicken out in front of another person. She was going to do this.

“Okay,” Amadea said, her voice coming through much more confidently than she felt internally. She opened the tube of hair dye and squirted some into her palm. “Can you help me get the spots in the back?” she asked Lizzie, handing the tube over to the girl. And with that, Amadea took her hand, lathered the dye and spread it onto her hair follicles. If this was a mistake, it was too late to turn back now.

Lizzie sighed and then smiled while shaking her head. The girl opposite her did not look confident in the choice she was trying to make. It was always good to know exactly what you wanted and if there was even a small doubt about the decision it probably was not a good idea. However, Lizzie was almost certain Amadea would look just as good with blonde hair.

"Oh, thank you." The girl said while grabbing some small bits of blonde hair, "My brothers put some blue sticky stuff in it and I couldn't get it out. So I had to resort to this.. Hair…" Lizzie grimaced before putting on another smile while eyeing up the bottle in Amadea's hand. It was unusual why she even had the bottle. Had she brought it to Hogwarts intentionally? Or was it just lying around and that's how the idea had popped into her head. Either way it was a bit weird. However, being blonde is always the best. They always have the best lives.

Lizzie nodded her head as she grabbed the bottle and put a bit on her hands. "This stuff might stain your hands if you don't wash it off quickly. You don't want to be walking around school with literally white hands for six months." She laughed while rubbing a bit of the dye into the roots of Amadea's hair.

"I'm sure you will look great." She reassured while nodding her head, "What made you want to go blonde?" Lizzie knew it probably was a personal question but there was no harm in at least asking. If Amadea found it uncomfortable to answer than Lizzie would respect that and not continue to pester her.

The Ravenclaw girl continued to plaster on the dye and spoke up quickly, "I honestly like your red hair. However, there does seem to be a lot of redheads around Hogwarts now a days. Maybe a change of scenery would be nice." Lizzie laughed and shook her. It was true. She had been counting heads for a while and it looked like red heads had taken over the school. She had once had a where all the gingers were storming up to Hogwarts with their wands in their hand and somehow had taken out all the staff members. It was quite scary.

𝓐madea wrinkled her nose as Lizzie explained the reason for her new haircut; it made Amadea glad she didn't have a brother. Of course, she lived with her cousin Jakoby who was practically like a brother so she knew what it was like. Thankfully, Jake didn't put blue sticky things in her hair. All of Amadea's hair changing was happening only because she wanted to do it. "That's an unfortunate story...but your hair looks great," Amadea said. It was true; now that her hair was shorter it framed her face very nicely.

Lizzie began rubbing the dye into the back of Amadea's hair where she couldn't reach, talking as she did so. Amadea gulped as she spoke; she didn't want her hands to be dyed white for the next six months. Given, she was pretty pale but she wasn't so pasty that her skin was bright white. She quickly leaned over and turned on the sink, rubbing off all of the extra dye and letting it wash down the drain. Hopefully, this wouldn't stay.

"What made you want to go blond?" Lizzie had asked. Amadea took a deep breath, wondering how she should answer the question. It wasn't like she didn't have an answer, she just didn't know if she should give Lizzie the full rambling explanation of how she was losing her identity after she lost her father and looking at her red hair just reminded her of the Campbell side of the family and how all of them had red hair and it made her sad or if she should just tell Lizzie the short and sweet version. "I guess I'm just looking for a change," she replied. "A fresh start of sorts. I know changing hair color is kind of an odd way to do that but I'm hoping that it will help motivate me to make more changes as well," she said. Hopefully her new hair would give her the confidence she needed to fulfill the pact she had made with herself at the end of her third year: to get more involved and put her life back on track.

"Yeah, having red hair was pretty unique before I came to Hogwarts," Amadea said. "But then I came here and there were so many other people with red hair too!" She laughed. "I'm definitely going to miss it...I'll probably go back to red eventually, but I'm just looking for something different now I guess." The gingers were so abundant around the school, Amadea was ready to do something different. She looked down at the dye bottle in her hand.

"Okay, so I guess I wash it out now?" she said, reading the directions. She had never done this before; hopefully, Lizzie knew what she was doing. Amadea turned on the faucet and leaned her head down to start washing out the dye, praying that it had worked. Once she had finished rinsing, Amadea pulled her head back up and looked into the mirror, bracing herself for a head of blond hair. Instead, she saw a mass of purple hair staring back at her. "Oh no!" she cried. "Lizzie what did we do wrong?"

"Yes. Quite unfortunate but other than that I like it a lot." She smiled and nodded her head. "Thank you. I'm sure your new hair color will look just as good as mine." Her brothers really were a big handful that had yet to figure out how to play a harmless prank without causing harm to themselves or other people.

As she finished rubbing in the last of the dye, Lizzie moved over towards a sink. She turned on the tap slowly and rubbed her hands together while inventively listening to Amadea's explanation on why she was going blond, nodding her head in all the right places. "I understand. We all need to have a small change in life at some point or another." She said finishing off washing her hands and shaking them to get the excess water off.

"I think red hair is very beautiful. Sometimes I feel a little bit inferior in the presence of a red head." Lizzie laughed while leaning on to one of the sinks. "Hogwarts is very opposite to the outside world. My mother once said only 2% of the world has ginger hair. Here it seems like 90% percent does." She chuckled once again and then held a breath as Amadea washed her hair out.

As she pulled her head back up, Lizzie eyes widened. How on earth had blond hair dye changed into purple? Maybe it was something to do with the ginger hair. "You suit purple well." Lizzie shrugged and put on a small smile. "I have no idea what we did wrong."

Pushing herself up, the girl put a hand in her pocket feeling her wand. A small flash went across her eyes as a possible solution popped into her head. "Isn't there a spell to change hair colors?" She asked quickly. "We could turn it blond. Well, you can. I don't know the spell yet."

She nodded her head and let out a deep breath, "...and with a spell you can always go back to ginger when ever you want?" Lizzie was sure that her idea would be good and hoped it would give Amadea at least a little bit of faith.

Interacting with Lizzie; allowed to godmod as she is no longer onsite (permission was granted before she left)
𝓐madea give Lizzie a brief smile as the two girls talked while working on her hair. She knew that if the roles had been switched and it was Amadea walking in on Lizzie having a meltdown in the bathroom, she would have been way more awkward. As much as Amadea prided herself as being the person that anyone could open up to when they needed a shoulder to cry on, she also knew that her social skills were not something to brag about. Unfortunately, she knew she definitely probably would have made the situation worse for Lizzie. Thankfully, their roles were reversed and it seemed like Lizzie had plenty of knowledge on dyeing hair, which made her feel slightly better about making this rash decision.

"I know!" Amadea remarked, thinking about how many redheaded people she knew at school. "I honestly used to get bullied for having red hair before coming to Hogwarts, but now I fit right in." Perhaps going blonde would set her apart from her peers a little bit; after all, she wouldn't look like them anymore.

Unfortunately, as Amadea stared at her hair in the mirror, something had gone horribly, horribly wrong. A mess of soggy purple hair sat upon her head. She managed a laugh as Lizzie complimented her new hair color; while Amadea loved the color purple it was definitely not the look she was going for on her head. Perhaps she would consider dyeing her hair a more fun color in the future, but right now she wanted a more natural color. She knew dyeing her hair with the suspicious box mix was not a good idea, no matter how much Lizzie knew about hair dye. But Amadea seemed to be the master at making bad decisions today.

"Oh I didn't even think of that," Amadea said as Lizzie commented about how she could just use a spell to change her hair color. Was that even allowed? Amadea knew there were rules at Hogwarts about not using magic outside of the classroom but she really wanted to fix her hair. Plus, it wasn't like she was hexing someone in the middle of the hallway. All she wanted to do was make her hair a different color. No big deal at all. Brandishing her wand, she took a deep breath. If she screwed this up, this would be bad. She had a feeling fixing her hair magically was going to take much more effort than a bad box dye. Don't psych yourself out, she thought to herself. Taking a deep breath, Amadea briefly smiled at Lizzie before moving her wand and commanding, "Colovaria." She held her breath, hoping that it worked. A few seconds later, she watched as her hair slowly began melting into a nice shade of blond, removing the dark, hideous purple from her scalp entirely.

Amadea's face broke out into a smile as she studied her new reflection. Seeing herself with blond hair was a new sensation and something she wasn't quite used to yet, but it wasn't in a bad way. She enjoyed her new hair and the thought of having a new beginning. Turning around, she grinned at Lizzie. "Thank you so much for helping me," she said. "I don't know if I could have done it without you." With one last smile, Amadea picked up the remnants of the hair box dye that the two girls had scattered across the floor of the lavatory and made her way to the trash. After dumping it in, she turned around one last time. "Thank you again, Lizzie!" she said. "See you around!"

Exeunt Amadea.
