Leave me Alone
@Anastasia BeckettMarch 19
Katrina had finally found the only quiet place in the entire castle. It seemed that each place she would find that was without any students, someone would barge in and ask her what was wrong or try to fix her. Didn't they understand that she was beyond fixing? Finally, she stumbled into the Study Rooms, tired and with bloodshot eyes. The second year closed the door behind her and it took everything in her not to cry.
The Gryffindor strode up the window and placed her hands on the sill. She gripped the wood so tight that her knuckles paled to white. The girl couldn't help the tears that rose to her eyes, clouding her vision and threatening to fall. She had vowed to herself that she wouldn't cry over her parents. Nonetheless, here she was, about to do it again.
Katrina's parents had perished, along with her brother and childhood home, in a tragic house fire exactly one year ago. The fateful letter, the sobbing in the bathroom, the depression that had followed had reduced the girl to a shell of who she once was. She grabbed the tear stained letter from her pocket with ginger hands.
Dear Miss Katrina Walker,
I am the terrible bearer of news. I have just been informed that there was a fire in your childhood home. Your brother Liam is missing, but there is no proof of his death. Your parents however, were found dead. We have arranged a funeral to take place during your spring break. You will stay with your Aunt. Sadly your Aunt will not be able to take care of you this summer. Therefore you will stay at Hogwarts for that time.
Sending condolences,
Anonymous
Her brother, her best friend, had never returned.
Katrina hadn't fully understood that this letter had also meant that she had no home. She had nothing. The worst part is that the rest of her family hated her. Katrina had learned this full well at her parents funeral.
In the 12-year-old's first year, Katrina had been too devastated to fully wrap her head around it. She did now though. No parents. No brother. No home. No family. She was an orphan with only her school. All she had left was the locket around her neck, and she had lost that two days ago.
Katrina looked out over the stormy skies. Matches my mood. She thought bitterly. Trying to force the tears into anger, she found herself clutching the window sill. At least that would hold firm when the rest of her troubled world was being reduced to ashes.
"Why me?" She whimpered, the pent up emotions lacing her words.

Leave me Alone
Date:
29 March 2020Ana was in an particularly foul mood. Despite her endless tutoring, she was utterly and hopelessly behind on assignments. When they had begun their travels, her parents had assured her that they would talk to the headmaster and make sure that she didn't have to play too much catch up. However, none of their letters to him had been answered, so poor Ana was left playing catch up. She had resolved to hunt down the headmaster, but for the moment, she was more focused on the mountain of classwork she had gotten from the various professors.
The study room was pleasantly empty when Ana arrived, seeing as the majority of the student body was not weighed down by months worth of assignments. Ana's brow wrinkled and her lips pressed together as she began to work. After who knew how long, she had finished a handful and was now ignoring her rumbling stomach. A small part of her reminded her how peevish she got when she was hungry, and that wasn't even considering her existing irritation over her assignments or her tiredness from traveling the previous day. Anyone who approached her or frankly existed near her at the moment would be subject to an Ana in rare form.
Focusing back on her assignment, her scowl grew. She had begun to get in the zone on her current assignment when someone flung open the door and subsequently flung it shut. Ana was still and quiet enough that the girl, who was clearly focused on something Ana didn't know about. Still her dramatic entrance was distracting and Ana's focus was lost. Fuming, Ana glared at the girl as the trainwreck continued to the window. Ugh, this fool was so caught up in whatever nonsense that she wasn't even aware of Ana's death glare. Ana's death glare was legendary! How could this plebeian just ignore it?
Standing, Ana stalked across the room and stood over the whimpering mess. Ana could tell they were about the same height, but the brunette was standing confidently and straight, whereas the messy whiny redhead was a pathetic puddle. As Ana reached her, she heard her ask someone why her. First off, Ana was unclear as to whom she was speaking, seeing as Ana was the only other person in the room. Perhaps the girl was mad and talking to the voices in her head. That would be odd.
"Quite probably you because you feel it necessary to fling yourself dramatically across a study room where people are trying to, as the name might imply, study," Ana said, cocking her head slighting at the stranger. "I can't speak for the entire student body, but I personally prefer to study in peace and quiet, not with some drama queen caterwauling. Consider taking your drama to your dorm next time.

OOC: Hey there! Three things. First and foremost, I am so sorry I took so long. I had a terrible case of writer's block as well as IRL stuff, but I should be back to normal replying speed. Second, I'm sorry Ana is such a turd! Third, I saw you had marked this as March 17, however, Ana was actually in New York at that time, and did not arrived back to Hogwarts until March 28. I can do just about anytime after then, so if March 29 doesn't work for your timeline, let me know and we can pick a different date. Thanks!

@Anastasia BeckettKatrina was gripping the windowsill for dear life. Her eyes were trained past the glass and the scenery and straight on into oblivion. Her jaw was clenched and back was hunched, each muscle tensed with fear and pain. A jumble of usually suppressed emotion flickered on her face. However confused her body language portrayed, her mind was reliving her past. Scenes of her parents waving a scared goodbye from the Leaky Cauldron to the letter to crying in the bathroom to the endless moments she found herself in pain or crying. Tears that welled up in her eyes were forced into anger, her brow furrowed in thought.
The second year was so deep in her thoughts that she didn't see a figure working hard on schoolwork. She also didn't notice as that annoyed person walked up to her. The lioness didn't even register the girl until she began speaking. At the sound of another voice, Katrina turned, flustered and embarrassed.
Katrina had to mentally rewind what the girl had said. Something about drama and caterwauling was about as much as she got out of it. As usual, Katrina switched her facial expressions, although this time, her heart wasn't in it. She was typically a master at the art of body language, but today, her emotions were hindering the result.
The girl turned, blinking away her tears and locking her jaw. The expression on her face screamed 'I don't care about you or your opinion'. Katrina squinted, sizing up the somewhat meaning stranger. Katrina stood a bit taller, giving herself an air of annoyance. But this girl had already seen her weak. It was already too late to cover up what she had already clearly portrayed by her 'caterwauling'.
"Is there nowhere in this bloody castle where I can be alone?" Katrina's words lacked the biting edge they had when she was defensive. Although Katrina had shifted her image to less pathetic, she still had her eyes locked past the window and her fingers still gripped around the windowsill.
"If I'm such a distraction, what about you going into your common room where I'm sure you could find a quieter space," Katrina's words were laced with sarcasm, "If you must know, my common room is full of plenty more noise and annoying people who have nothing better to do but harass random strangers,"
Even though Katrina seemed to have it all under control. It was all a well placed façade. There was only so much longer she could hold this air of confidence and annoyance before it all crumbled away. Katrina's only hope of not looking like an absolute coward was to outlast the person and convince them to leave before she lost it.

@Katrina WalkerThe girl made a pitiful attempt at pulling herself together, but Ana didn't buy it even a little. First off, it was hard to convince someone who had seen Katrina in the state that Ana just had that she was all right, and secondly, her facade seemed flimsy at best. Even if her expressions had been convincing, someone who was all right wouldn't have flung herself across the study hall the way this girl had. A kind person would have sympathized, maybe even tried to comfort the girl. A kind person certainly wouldn't try and antagonize this teal haired whiner into a full on sobbing fit. Nobody had ever said Ana was a kind person.
Crossing her arms and tilting her head slightly like some cliched Muggle high school mean girl, Ana came in closer. This girl had distracted her and Ana had committed herself to running this whiny little freak show out of the room. She snorted at the girl's words. There were plenty of places to be alone if one really tried. Ana knew plenty of good places to go if she wanted to cry and be alone. How stupid was this girl? She didn't even bother to dignify that nonsense with a reply. She arched an eyebrow slightly, and continued to glare at the girl. After her next words, Ana rolled her eyes so far back into her head she was sure she was about to see her brain. "I'm in the Study Room to study, you bloody fool. Go cry in your room if you actually want to be alone, instead of frolicking the castle trying to get pity and attention from others," she said disdainfully. This weirdo's logic was seriously questionable. Teal Hair's common room was far too loud and noisy for her to cry (not an activity that required silence or privacy in Ana's opinion), so Ana was to be relegated to her common room to study. Studying required far more focus than crying, and what if this moron was also a Gryffindor? That would imply that the room that was supposedly too loud and busy to cry was suitable to study.
This girl was clearly a complete idiot.
"Well, if your letter is important enough to warrant you attempting to banish everyone from the study room, I assume it's worth it," Ana said, edging closer before plucking the letter from the girl's hand. She didn't actually much care about the contents of the letter, and as such didn't bother to read it just yet. For the moment, she was satisfied to hold the letter just out of the whiner's reach.

@Anastasia BeckettKatrina was really not liking this girl. She had this aura of danger and grudges that seemed to come with too much experience. All Katrina wanted to do was curl up in a ball of tears and weep, but that was not an option. Simply crying was not an option. She was going to outlast Mrs. Snob until her last breath.
Katrina could feel this girl's gaze burrowing through her soul. Like she was scanning for all of her weaknesses so she could pry them apart and reduce Katrina to a blubbering mess. Well not today Mrs. Snob. Katrina turned her head a touch to see Mrs. Snob's eyes roll so far back in her head that Katrina wondered if she was about to have a seizure. At least mocking the girl in her head kept Katrina from crying-- for now.
"My room? My room! My common room is a mess of loud, obnoxious, snobs with over-inflated ego's. Not unlike you I might add," Katrina snorted, faking confidence that she didn't feel in the slightest. She could feel her resolution wearing thin. She knew she had gone too far. Mocking like this was fine in a muggle world, but in a place with magic, it was bad to start a fight, even if it was mostly harmless.
When the girl snatched the letter from Katrina's grasp, she couldn't help the expression of weakness to flash across her features. It would be really bad if she read it. The teasing would never end. The rumors would start up again. Her reputation would go farther down the drain. And worse, the girl would know her name. However, Katrina knew better than making a move to grab it back. Instead she stuffed her hands deep in her pocket, feeling the confidence that her wand brought her.
This was not going to end well.

Leave me Alone

@Katrina WalkerAna arched an eyebrow. She hadn't mentioned her common room, she'd talked about the girl's room. She assumed this fool was at least not too thick to understand that she had meant her dorm room, but apparently not even that could be taken for granted. Idiot. Although, to be fair, what did Ana expect of some idiot who frolicked the lands sobbing in random public rooms?
"Quite frankly, I really don't actually care about your common room. If you're looking for privacy, then it would stand to reason that you don't air your dirty laundry in public spaces such as the bleeding study hall," Ana sighed, her tone similar to what she would use if she was speaking to a pet or a small child. Rolling her eyes again, although slightly less dramatically this time, she glanced at the paper in her hand, and began to unfold it as though to read it. She really wasn't remotely interested in this girl's personal business, but if this fool was going to insist upon staying there and arguing with her about it, Ana was going to need to elevate her game.
"My, Kit-Kat, your life really is a mess," Ana laughed as she began to read. "Not as much of a mess as that unfortunate and tacky streak in your abnormally dry hair, mind you, but messy none the less." This was clearly a sore subject based on the expression that had crossed her face when Ana had snatched the letter. At that moment, she also noted that the girl's hand seemed to have migrated to her pocket. Presumably where she kept her wand. That wouldn't be prudent, seeing as firstly, Ana had her letter and could keep or destroy it if she so pleased, and secondly, Ana could just eat the letter or something and play the victim to any professor or prefect who encountered them. Still, Ana was slightly on edge. She wouldn't reach for her wand just yet though.

Leave me Alone
@Anastasia BeckettKatrina couldn't stand being talked down to. It was really getting on her nerves and she was seriously debating leaving Mrs. Snob and going to cry somewhere else. Perhaps there was a tree or two that she could climb up and cry in. But there was still the fact that her ego was a bit sensitive right now.
Mrs. Snob was clearly enjoying the fact that she had the letter. Katrina gritted her teeth impatiently as she read it over slowly. "Pleased with yourself yet?" Katrina asked icily. Her tone thankfully as annoyed as she wanted it to be. But if past experiences said anything, Mrs. Snob wouldn't be affected by it.
When Mrs. Snob referred to her as 'Kit Kat' she began to feel her blood boil. That had been the nickname her dad would call her. No one had called her that since he had died. It seemed Mrs. Snob didn't even have a heart as she went on. The jest at her hair didn't mind Katrina much, but the comment about the teal streak she felt. Katrina gripped the windowsill again putting all of her frustration into squeezing the wood piece.
"If you wouldn't mind, I would like my letter back," Katrina said slowly between gritted teeth. She was going to get out of here before she started crying. She could feel her nose twinge and tears trying to build up already. Sure, Mrs. Snob wasn't going to give the letter back that easily, but as long as she didn't burn it or something, Katrina was fine.
Her fingers traced the design on her wand, uncertain if it was worth taking out yet. It wasn't like there was a spell that would be easy to use. Perhaps she could Flippindo Mrs. Snob into the wall and snatch the letter before taking a quick depart. But at this rate, she could be able to concentrate well enough to cast anything. But she also didn't want to take out her wand because then Mrs. Snob would too and Mrs. Snob would likely have no problem Flippindoing her out a window if her heartlessness was any indication.
This was not how she wanted to spend her evening.

Leave me Alone

@Katrina WalkerAna rolled her eyes when the whiner demanded to know if she was pleased with herself yet. Obviously not, seeing as she was still here and still whining. Honestly, couldn't she take a hint? If it were Ana in this position, she would have snatched her letter back, probably slapped the other girl, and left, but this girl didn't even have the guts to do that. Utterly pathetic.
Ana wasn't completely soulless - she did feel mildly guilty about mocking someone who had just found out that she had lost her family. However, she didn't know this girl, didn't want to know her, and was being disturbed by her wailing. Surely, she had some friend somewhere at the school, and whoever it was, it was their job to cheer her up or help her cope with her problems or whatever, not Ana's.
"I do, in fact, mind, Kit-Kat," Ana said, her voice sickly sweet. She was so over this nonsense and was more than ready to make this girl cry or whatever it took to get her out of her so that Ana could get back to her studying. She could see her eyes watering, so it really ought to just take a bit more to either make her cry or come close enough that she would leave. Ana really didn't care which at this point. She wanted to get back to her stupid homework.
"How sad is the fact that you don't even know who's telling you that your family is dead? I hope you verified this and were at least interrupting my studying with real dead parents, because I might have to retaliate if you disrupted my evening over fake dead parents, Kit-Kat," Ana sneered. She crossed her arms and glared at the girl as though to demand confirmation that she did in fact have dead parents. Ana almost wished her parents were dead. It would at least stop them from trying to run her entire life and taking her out of school for almost a year. Of course, she didn't actually want them dead, but she was a cranky teenager.

Leave me Alone
Katrina was too close to melting down. It was embarrassing and weak and very not Gryffindor. Mrs. Snob was not going to go away, was she? Then Mrs. Snob had gone too far and Katrina practically exploded in anger.
"It's Katrina, not 'Kit-Kat'" Katrina was fuming now, her words fast but clear, "Well, if you really must know, my parents and brother died a year ago. And I do in fact have proof of my parents' death because I went to their funeral. I'm sure you've never felt hurt like that! And to top it all off, my family told me that they didn't want me and would rather put me in a orphanage than take me in. And Gryffindor's are known for being egotistical jerks that don't know how to feel for someone or at least leave someone alone, so that makes the common room or dorm room or anywhere else in this bloody castle not fit to cry in. And, you know what? I don't have any friends to cry to so that is the reason I went to a study room that is usually empty because no person actually studies this late. And, you know what, I hate you and I wish you never existed," Katrina swung from the windowsill, utter hate in her eyes.
Katrina felt the tears rise up dangerously before spilling over, "You don't know what it's like to sit in a windowsill crying until you can't breathe because there is no one in the world left for you. You don't know what it's like to sit alone and eat alone for days and weeks. It is so hard not to burst into tears at random occasions and I think I'm doing a bloody fine job keeping it together. I spent my birthday alone, I spent my brother-- my best friend's-- birthday without him. I spent both of my parent's birthday without them. There is no one left for me and you don't have any clue what it's like," Katrina reached up and grabbed the letter out of her hand.
"And if you even knew a fraction of what it's like, you wouldn't be a jerk to someone who is barely holding it all together," With that last comment, Katrina stormed out of the room, slamming the door behind her before bursting into tears and racing up to the common room and shutting herself in the dorm room alone ignoring the other girl's stares. Today had been one of the worst days of her life.

Leave me Alone
@Katrina WalkerAna was slightly confused. If her family had died a year ago and she had gone to her funeral, why was she frolicking the school with the letter wailing about it? This was old news. A year ago, Ana had been a prefect and close friends with people that she didn't even speak to anymore. A year was a long time. More than long enough for this girl to have processed and dealt with the fact her parents were gone. Young people were supposedly resilient, considering some of the things that her classmates had gone through. Ana was sure she knew people who had gone through far worse, and they were still walking around and fine. This girl was clearly an insufferable drama queen.
"I can see exactly why your family wouldn't want you - you're so bloody annoying," Ana told the girl, sighing slightly. She really didn't care to know about this girl's loss or how sad and messy her life was. If she had been someone Ana actually cared about, that would have been a totally different story, but these two weren't friends, and Teal Hair was disrupting her studies. She rolled her eyes at the description of the Gryffindor Common Room. Those sounded like the words of a pathetic weirdo who had no friends. And she was trying to yell at Ana for studying this late? Ana's small amount of guilt for what she was doing was more than assuaged.
"Oh, you wound me," Ana said, placing her hand over her heart as though it had been pierced when the other girl stated that she wished Ana didn't exist. "Oh, wait, no, you don't. See, because unlike you, I'm not an overly sensitive whiner still wailing over things that happened a year ago." Ana listened to her monologue about how sad and bereaved she was. She felt another small prang of guilt, but pushed past it. It was really so not Ana's problem if this brat had no friends. Ana couldn't imagine anyone actually wanting to be friends with someone so annoying.
She rolled her eyes when the girl snatched her letter back and dramatically flounced out. Honestly, why could she have not done that far sooner? Shaking her head slightly, Ana crossed back to her books and sat down, trying to get her focus back on her studies. A small part of her wondered if she ought to have been a little nicer about all that, but she ignored it. After all, she had gotten what she wanted, so everything was fine.
