Pre-Hogwarts History -

The Tindall family isn't one without a rich history but the most important story for Jo is the one of her parents falling in love. Her father is a hopeless romantic who was entirely besotted by Jo's mother Chaya the moment her first saw her at thirteen years old. They married at 18 (despite the apprehension of Chaya's father Benjamin) and had their first child, a boy, at twenty. They were never rich but they never wanted for anything but a home, food on the table and each other. Ethan worked as a mechanic and Chaya helped around the shop and her parents restaurant.

With Ethan's parents out of the picture it was Chaya's parents who looked out for them when need be. Jo was the last child. A girl, finally. Doted on and adored, Aneta Levy was hoping for a little princess but it was clear by the way Jo idolized her brothers she'd be anything but. They are also a family that isn't without tragedy and heartbreak. Jo was eight when her mother passed away suddenly. It left her father shaken. Aneta and Ben never wavered in their support of their son-in-law and grandchildren, helping Ethan raise the children and moving into the same apartment building as Ethan and the kids when Ethan had to sell the family home. Jo's life, despite the loss of her mother, has been a good one and she doesn't lack for love. She knows this, knows how lucky she is in comparison to most and she always reminds herself of this.

Personality -

It might be considered almost insulting the way that Jo has a tendency to take everything with a grain of salt. Regardless of the whys and wherefores, the girl refuses to believe anything at face value. Oftentimes it's intuition that demands she look deeper into an issue. Others, it's simple stubbornness. Unable to ever let anything be 'easy', Jo has an irritating tendency to apply 'not everything is as it seems' to most any situation. Belief is hard to come by - but what she has is deep seated. What morals, what integrity the girl has come by, were found through years of trial and error, tested and found to be true; "I may not know what I know - but I know what I do not."

While no one could rightfully accuse Jo of cowardice (even if they should), there are peculiar notes of timidity about her person that not many pick up on. With her strident conversation and evasive answers, the girl merely seems cagey on some matters. An answer, or discussion, is never guaranteed when it comes to Jo. However, the insightful can ascertain that her capricious dialogue is not dictated by whimsy, but intent. You see, Jo is dreadfully good at avoiding the things that make her uncomfortable. Where most people cherish connections and commitment, the brunette is quite petrified by them (ah yes, those abandonment issues). As such, she generally cuts and runs when things start getting heavy or serious.

She cherishes above all things, honour. Perhaps 'pride' would be a better way to put it (given the way it comes off, anyway) but at the end of the day, Jo is singularly noble individual. As sarcastic, flippant and utterly frustrating a person she may be, there are certain things even she holds sacred. That which is Right and Honourable must always be done. However, that doesn't always mean that 'right' is following the rules and boundaries set by others. Jo follows her own code. The girl had always come with that particular disclaimer.

Although she rarely displays it (in fact, Jo seems irritatingly hell-bent and determined on playing the fool more often than not) Jo is far from a simpleton. There are, of course, different kinds of 'intelligence' - from book smarts to street sense. It could be said that Jo's mind bent more to the analytical side of things. Able to see conclusions (often accused from jumping from point A to point D without a sideways glance at b, c, or e) with a bare minimum of information, Jo calculates the odds and is often right. She is of the innately and undeserving kind of intelligence, hardly applying herself outside of class and yet succeeding in leaps and bounds when it came to 'in the' class work and exams. She's seventy percent natural talent and thirty percent bluff.

Not to be confused with the characteristic resignation that Jo frequently employs, her resolute nature is a force to be reckoned with. Instead of the resignation ("It will happen, so why bother trying to stop it?") the character difference is that it is "I will happen, any attempt to stop me is futile." Her peculiar tenacity is markedly reluctant to let her back down from a challenge and Jo's not so laughable intellect tends to assure her of the righteousness of any given course she takes. It makes, one would admit, for an interesting conflict. Self-preservation against determination.
