Aurélie's story:

Reducio

Imagine a small, cosy-looking cottage in the south of Scotland. The kind that is surrounded by plants and covered in vines all the way up to the rooftop. When you walk by it you can smell fresh baked bread rolls, cinnamon-apple pies and a whiff of lavender scent carried in a warm breeze. In that cottage lives an old woman. A kind-hearted, wrinkly woman that has lived through many difficult times but still treats everyone with respect. The whole town knows who she is and everyone is welcome for a piece of homemade pie and a shoulder to cry on. Her heart is filled with love and she shares it with as many as she can before her time comes. The woman doesn’t live in the cottage by herself, it may be a small house but there’s enough room from the woman’s granddaughter. Her granddaughter’s name is Aurélie Nimco. The young girl was born in Somalia eleven years ago but had spent her entire life in Scotland with the old lady. The lady wasn’t really her grandmother but Aurélie called her that. In fact Aurélie Nimco was adopted by her when she was only one year old. As a new born baby the girl’s parents had gone missing so she was put in an orphanage. After one year, nothing had come up about the parents so she was put up for adoption. Not long after that a French woman living in Scotland adopted her and brought her to Scotland where she spent her childhood growing up in a loving environment.

Aurélie was a happy kid. She had tantrums like most kids and could be possessive when it came to her belongings but her nan was her everything. That woman changed her life for the better and she adored her. With her tawny, freckled skin and long, voluminous curls the young girl stood out in her town. Most Scottish people were pale and tall while she was rather short and dark-skinned. Being short didn’t cause her to be shy though, au contraire she had strong opinions and was not scared to speak up. It was a trait that didn’t always sit right with others, people would say she was rude or arrogant but she was honest. Aurélie could deal with a lot but she hated liars. She knew that she could be a tad more subtle sometimes but it didn’t bother her if she got in trouble if she didn’t. She had a short temper but she saw that as a positive characteristic. Standing up for friends in need or when someone was being mistreated or disrespected, Aurélie was someone others could count on. No one would bedevil her without consequence.

Being raised by a muggle French-woman without knowing who her parents were, gave both of them a big surprise the first time her magic sprouted. It was on a cold November afternoon. Aurélie and her grandma were baking cranberry pies, a fresh batch had just came out the oven. Aurélie was terrible at making cranberry pies so they took advantage of the free afternoon to practice in their home in Roslin. Pies were one of her grandmother’s best-selling delicacies at her patisserie so the old lady could use all the help to make more. The bakery was located in France. They kept it open during the summer months of the year and went back to Scotland after the summer holidays. The shop didn’t make a big amount of profit to stay open all year round but the patisserie was famous nonetheless. Many people came to the quiet town just for Nanna’s pies. There was still a few weeks left before Aurélie and her nan had to go back to France so they spent the whole day in their kitchen in Roslin making all kinds of sweet goods. They had made many, so many pies that day. The last batch had burnt, the one before had soggy crusts and the one before was bland in taste because Aurélie had forgotten to add sugar. She crossed her fingers before putting on oven mittens and taking the fresh pies out of the oven. A smell of warm pies filled the kitchen once more, Aurélie put her pies on the counter and glanced hopefully at her nan. In silence both of them hovered over the pies and took a whiff of the sweet aroma. Aurélie grabbed a pie cutter and said “Allons-y”. She cut out a perfect slice and served it to her grandma. Her nan was an angel but when it came to pie, she was the world’s most difficult to please critic. The woman forked a chunk of pie into her mouth and let the flavours overwhelm her taste buds. Aurélie stared at her grandma tensely, she wanted to know her thoughts. Was it overcooked or burnt? Spongy or dry? Too many berries or not enough? “Come on Nanna, how is it?! Tell me!”, Aurélie demanded. Nanna closed her eyes for a few more seconds and when she opened them her mouth slowly formed into a smile. Her eyes glistened as she spoke: “It’s.. PERFECT! You did it, chérie! C’est délicieux!” Aurélie jumped in the air of contentment and screamed: “Yes, yes, yes!! Finally”. At that specific moment it felt like time had frozen. Aurélie felt a surge of energy go through her when suddenly all the previously made pies left in the kitchen imploded. The counter and kitchen cabinets were now covered in red cranberry filling and chunks of pie crusts. If someone walked in they would most likely think a murder had happened in there, it was a big mess. Nanna shrieked in shock and stared at Aurélie. “What was-… what did you do?”; she asked a bit more blunt then she meant to. Aurélie looked at her nan in terror. “I don’t know. Wh- did I do that? How did I-?” The girl was in shock, she had no idea she had magic flowing through her veins. With a sprint she ran to her bedroom and threw the old, wooden door shut. Her nan waited a few minutes before she went upstairs to let Aurélie calm down (and calm down herself) The old woman had seen a lot in her life but this? This was something else.. She had no idea what it was. What Aurélie was. Nevertheless, she loved that girl and she would support her no matter what. They ended up talking about what happened for a whole hour and then cleaned up the kitchen together. After that day they never spoke another word about the event. It didn’t happen again and since neither of them knew why it happened, there was no point in speculating.

Until one day, not long after the kitchen incident, a woman came to their house telling Aurélie she was a witch. The woman came from something called The Ministry of Magic. She told Aurélie all about the wizarding world, a school called Hogwarts and her powers. Despite the disbelief Aurélie felt like she had finally found her calling and her purpose in life. She also understood better what had happened that day in the kitchen. The woman from the ministry even had information about Aurélie's biological parents. Apparently both of them had magic which made Aurélie something called a 'pureblood'. All this information was new to young Aurélie so she spent a few hours talking to the lady and asking questions. Her first question was who her parents were and if they were still alive. Unfortunately neither of her birthparents were alive. One day there was an accident involving dragons and neither of them survived the attack. However, they had left some savings in Gringotts bank for their daughter, in case anything would happen. The lady from the ministry told her about Diagon Alley and proposed to accompany her to find Gringotts bank and buy her school equipment. Aurélie felt a little overwhelmed knowing there excisted a whole magic world under their noses and happily accepted the kind ladies' offer.

Aurélie and her grandmother were not allowed to tell anyone as that would risk the wizarding world from staying secret to the muggle world. A few weeks later an owl flew by their house and dropped something at the doorstep. It was a letter from Hogwarts’ School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Aurélie’s nan was surprised too but once the shock of it all had settled down she tried convincing the girl to attend the school. “but Nanna, you can’t keep the shop open all by yourself, I can’t go. I’m need here. Besides I don’t know anything about magicry or whatever it is called and I don’t speak great English. Plus, this school is in Scotland so I’d wouldn’t be able to see you when you go to the bakery in France and-“ “You can make up as much excuses as you want Auri, this is a once in a lifetime chance and you will go to that school! I love you chérie, I don’t like seeing you go but you have to take this opportunity. Think of all the things you could learn! And no need to worry about the shop, I will find someone to help me on busy days.” Aurélie tried opening her mouth to talk back but she soon realised she had run out of excuses. With a stubborn tone she said: “Fine, I’ll think about. just think! I’m not saying yes.” “yet”, Nanna added with a smirk. The next day the lady from the Ministry came back to their house to pick up Aurélie and they went to Diagon Alley to find everything she needed to start at Hogwarts.
