Family: Muriel (who usually goes by Merle) was born to muggle parents in the small village of Finchingfield, Braintree. Her mother, Anna, is the daughter of Irish immigrants in Boston. She moved to the UK to attend university at Oxford. There she met Merle's father, Evan, who was from a suburb of Belfast. Merle has a ten-year-old brother named Thomas. The Dunns also have a black and white cat named Flipper. Merle was five when they got Flipper, and she decided the cat looked like a penguin due to her coloring, hence the name.
Magic: The first time Merle's magic manifested was when she was seven. While out at recess, one of her classmates threw a ball at her face. It bounced off an unseen barrier, hitting the other child in the face. Another notable occasion was when Merle was ten. She came home from school upset and flopped onto her bed face-first, screaming to relieve stress. When she screamed, Flipper began to float into the air. After a few seconds, Merle turned over to breathe and saw a rather surprised Flipper land on her bed.
Personality: Growing up in a small village of about 1,500 people, Merle is very creative and independent and can usually be found running through groves of trees looking for adventure or craft materials. With the craft materials she finds, she usually makes little charms or decorations. When she was younger she'd pretend they were fairy or witch charms and the habit stuck. She also paints and writes.
Appearance: Merle has wavy brown hair that reaches just below her shoulders. It has an unfortunate tendency to get frizzy, especially when it's humid. She has fair, slightly freckled skin that burns easily in the sun. Her eyes are a hazel-green and are a bit large and usually are curious or inquisitive. The only other features of note are her hands, which are somewhat small and have long, nimble fingers which are almost always fidgeting with something. They're usually covered in ink, paint, or dirt.
Merle usually wears thick sweaters or overalls, the latter of which are also usually covered in paint.
When Merle got her Hogwarts letter, her parents were baffled but surprisingly accepting. As it turned out, her father had a second cousin that he hadn't seen since he was a child who'd apparently gone to a very selective private school at age eleven.
