Growing up around animals caused Nick to love them very much. His mom worked for The Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures, so Nick was always very fond of some of the things she dealt with. His mom had met his dad on a special trip to America, where she found him as the owner of the zoo, where a group of Knarls were wreaking havoc. Because of this, Nick was able to learn about both Muggle creatures and Non-Muggle Creatures.

As Nick got older, his mom started taking him on little trips to help her with her work. Nick got to meet and learn how to restrain/take care of almost every creature there was. When his mom asked him what he wanted to be when he grew up, the answer was clear. "A Magi-zoologist," was what he'd say every time. Life was fun. Very fun up until about when Nick was nine. Then disaster struck.

Nick's mom had just come back from Romania, when she caught a sickness. It spread throughout the entire family. Even Nick got some of this, and although he got the worst of it, most consider his father to have gotten the horrible bit. His father was a Muggle, so he just wasn't prepared for the disease. He was transferred to St. Mungos, but nobody apparently had a cure, and he died soon after. The worst part was that Nick couldn't even go to the funeral, because of the disease. He couldn't walk. He couldn't talk. Even his own breathing hurt.

When Nick finally got better, he had lost his happy-go-lucky feeling he always had before. He disappeared behind books for a while and grew a sense of shyness. The unknown disease had taken it's toll on Nick's body. Him and his mother didn't really talk much until his tenth birthday, when she started talking to him about Hogwarts, and her experiences there.

When Nick finally got his letter, it was the near end of the summer. His mom had a trip to go on, so she gave Nick seven Galleons, told him how to get to Diagon Alley, and sent him off. Nick hopes that he can have a good start at Hogwarts. A fresh, new, clean slate to write on, not filled with the horrors of his past.
